Impact of composting factors on the biodegradation of lignin in Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth): A response surface methodological (RSM) investigation

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a hydrophyte weed that causes havoc in the aquatic ecosystem as an invasive plant that can obstruct waterways and bring about nutrient imbalance. This study aims to address how this invasive hydrophyte can be physically harvested and biochemically transformed into a bioproduct that can enhance the restoration of damaged soil. Biocomposting, a low-cost biotechnological technique, was designed to degrade the lignocellulosic Eichhornia crassipes biomass and transform it into a valuable bioproduct. The process used response surface methodology (RSM) to investigate the aggregate effect of moisture content, turning frequency, and microbial isolate (Chitinophaga terrae) inoculum size on the breakdown of lignin over 21 days. The moisture content (A), (45, 55, 65) % v/w, inoculum size (B), (5, 7.5, 10)% v/v, and turning frequency (C), (1, 3, 5) days were considered independent variables, while percentage lignin degradation was considered a response variable. The optimal conditions for lignin breakdown were 65.7 percent (v/w) moisture, 7.5 percent (v/v) inoculum concentration, and 5-day interval turning. The R² score of 0.9733 demonstrates the model's integrity and reliability. Thus, the RSM approach resulted in a fine grain dark brown Nutri-compost that proved effective in enhancing soil fertility. This procedure is recommended for a scale-up process where large quantities of the hydrophyte could be treated for conversion into Nutri compost.

Evaluation of Co-Composting as an Alternative for the Use of Agricultural Waste of Spring Onions, Chicken Manure and Bio-Waste Produced in Moorland Ecosystems

Composting is an adequate method for treating and valorizing agricultural waste such as those from spring onion (SO) cultivation and chicken breeding (chicken manure–CM). However, the low content of Total Organic Carbon in the waste from SO and the high concentration of total nitrogen in CM are limitations for the composting process. This research studied the co-composting of SO and CM in a moorland ecosystem, together with locally available co-substrates such as biowaste (BW) and woodchips (WC), focusing on the effect of co-composting in process development and end-product quality. A pilot-scale experiment was carried out using three treatments in triplicated composting piles: (i) Treatment A: 43% CM + 41% BW + 16% WC; (ii) Treatment B: 52% CM + 32% SO + 16% WC, and (iii) Treatment C: 70% SO + 30% WC. Treatments A and B reached thermophilic temperatures after two days of the process start and remained at that level for 17 days. However, treatment B reached environmental temperature during curing in a shorter time (43 days) than treatment A (53 days). Treatment C did not achieve thermophilic temperatures. Tests carried out at the end of the process showed end-product stability and non-phytotoxic characteristics (germination indexes 80%). The fertility index of the products showed that treatments A and B presented values of 4.3 (over 5.0) while treatment C obtained a value of 2.5. From the perspective of agricultural use, products from the three treatments had limitations due to deficiencies in essential nutrients like phosphorus. Still, they had potential as a soil amendment for restoration processes. In summary, we have demonstrated that this waste, in combination with other organic materials, could be a good amendment for the composting process and the end product.

Producing high-quality cultivation substrates for cucumber production by in-situ composting of corn straw blocks amended with biochar and earthworm casts

In-situ composting is an efficient method for the dispose of crop residues. However, the high organic carbon content and low water-holding capacity of corn (Zea mays L.) straw can easily result in a slow composting process with high nutrient loss. In this study, compressed corn straw blocks was a control (S), straw mixed with earthworm casts (SE), straw mixed with biochar (SB), straw mixed with earthworm casts and biochar (SEB) were treatments to determine their effects on in-situ composting performance. In general, compared with S, the thermophilic period was extended by 14, 13 and 3 days in SE, SB and SEB, respectively, reduced nutrient loss, the water holding porosity of SE and SEB increased by 28.67% and 24.03%. Besides, the bacterial Shannon and Pielou's indices of SEB increased by 9.42% and 9.33%, respectively, and the relative abundance of Acinetobacter was increased in SB and SEB. Amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism were the most abundant metabolic processes in composts. SEB showed not only the highest cucumber yields, but also the highest OQI. The OQI of the CCSBs was significantly and positively correlated with cucumber yields (P < 0.001). These results indicated that the combination of earthworm casts and biochar was more effective than each single additive during in-situ composting of corn straw blocks, and emphasized that the overall quality of CCSBs played pivotal roles in determining the agronomic performance of CCSBs. In addition, the in-situ composting of corn straw blocks could be used to produce high-quality cultivation substrates.

Application of Optimization and Modeling for the Enhancement of Composting Processes

Composting is a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to digesting organic waste and turning it into organic fertilizer. It is a biological process in which polymeric waste materials contained in organic waste are biodegraded by fungi and bacteria. Temperature, pH, moisture content, C/N ratio, particle size, nutrient content and oxygen supply all have an impact on the efficiency of the composting process. To achieve optimal composting efficiency, all of these variables and their interactions must be considered. To this end, statistical optimization techniques and mathematical modeling approaches have been developed over the years. In this paper, an overview of optimization and mathematical modeling approaches in the field of composting processes is presented. The advantages and limitations of optimization and mathematical modeling for improving composting processes are also addressed.

Tailored Bioactive Compost from Agri-Waste Improves the Growth and Yield of Chili Pepper and Tomato

An extensive use of chemical fertilizers has posed a serious impact on food and environmental quality and sustainability. As the organic and biofertilizers can satisfactorily fulfill the crop’s nutritional requirement, the plants require less chemical fertilizer application; hence, the food is low in chemical residues and environment is less polluted. The agriculture crop residues, being a rich source of nutrients, can be used to feed the soil and crops after composting and is a practicable approach to sustainable waste management and organic agriculture instead of open-field burning of crop residues. This study demonstrates a feasible strategy to convert the wheat and rice plant residues into composted organic fertilizer and subsequent enrichment with plant-beneficial bacteria. The bioactive compost was then tested in a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments for validating its role in growing organic vegetables. The compost was enriched with a blend of micronutrients, such as zinc, magnesium, and iron, and a multi-trait bacterial consortium AAP (Azospirillum, Arthrobacter, and Pseudomonas spp.). The bacterial consortium AAP showed survival up to 180 days post-inoculation while maintaining their PGP traits. Field emission scanning electron microscopic analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of bioactive compost further elaborated the morphology and confirmed the PGPR survival and distribution. Plant inoculation of this bioactive compost showed significant improvement in the growth and yield of chilies and tomato without any additional chemical fertilizer yielding a high value to cost ratio. An increase of ≈35% in chlorophyll contents, ≈25% in biomass, and ≈75% in yield was observed in chilies and tomatoes. The increase in N was 18.7 and 25%, while in P contents were 18.5 and 19% in chilies and tomatoes, respectively. The application of bioactive compost significantly stimulated the bacterial population as well as the phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities of soil. These results suggest that bioactive compost can serve as a source of bioorganic fertilizer to get maximum benefits regarding vegetable yield, soil quality, and fertilizer saving with the anticipated application for other food crops. It is a possible win-win situation for environmental sustainability and food security.

Potential of windrow food and green waste composting in Tunisia

Solid waste management and disposal is one of the most significant challenges facing urban communities around the world. There is a wide range of alternative waste management options and strategies available for dealing with the notable increase in the waste stream. Composting is one of the most viable and efficient waste treatment options in terms of the reduction in the negative effects from the application of organic waste to soil. The experimental research aimed to examine the potential of producing compost from different organic waste streams in Tunisia. Two experimental windrow piles made from cooked and uncooked food and garden wastes were initiated and temporally monitored. The composting process was controlled in terms of temperature and moisture. Sampling was carried out over the period of the composting process. All of the collected samples were analyzed in terms of their physical, chemical, and biological properties; pH, C:N ratio, nitrification index (NI), microbiological tests, respiration activity (AT4), and heavy metal content. The quality of the final product was determined and compared with Tunisian and German standards. The findings demonstrated a significant reduction in the initial C:N ratio to about 15 by the end of the process. Additionally, the results showed that the compost produced appeared to be stable and was deemed to be class V finished compost; the NI was found to be around 1, while the AT4 was estimated to be lower than 6 mg O2/g TS. Regarding the heavy metal content, the final products were characterized as having a lower concentration than those values set by Tunisian and German standards.

Investigation of technology for composting mixed deer manure and straw

Composting is an effective method for utilizing agricultural straw waste and livestock manure resources. Using deer manure and corn straw as raw materials, the changes in various indexes were studied during composting under different initial C/N ratios, initial moisture contents, and particle sizes of corn straw, and compost maturity was evaluated. Moisture content, total organic carbon content, and C/N ratio all declined during composting, while total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, pH, germination index, and electrical conductivity increased. The grey relational analysis method was used to evaluate maturity. The results showed that a mixture of stalk and deer manure with initial moisture content of 55%, initial C/N ratio of 30:1, and a straw particle size of 1.5-3.5 cm constituted the optimal experimental conditions. Taguchi analysis indicated that initial moisture content exerted the greatest influence on compost maturity, followed by initial C/N ratio and crushed straw particle size. This study provides an important reference for the utilization of compost derived from a mixture of livestock manure and straw.

Recycling nutrient-rich hop leaves by composting with wheat straw and farmyard manure in suitable mixtures

The harvesting of hops (Humulus lupulus L.) generates large amounts of nutrient-rich leaves that can be used in composting mixtures to add value to other organic resources on the farm. In this study, hop leaves were mixed with cow manure and wheat straw in several combinations with the aim of establishing guidelines on how farmers can manage the raw materials and better use these valuable organic resources. The composting process was monitored and the quality of the composts evaluated in relation to the effects on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in pots over two consecutive cycles. The mixture of hop leaves with cow manure produced a stable compost after nine months of composting which may be used in horticultural crops, irrespective of the proportion of raw materials, due to their low and similar C/N ratios. However, when using mixtures of leaves and straw in proportions of less than 2:1, the composts did not mature properly, showing high C/N ratios. Their application to the soil led to a strong reduction in plant tissue N concentrations, due to biological N immobilization, which significantly reduced lettuce dry matter yield. Thus, to reduce composting time and increase the quality of the compost, the ratio leaves/straw should be as high as possible, at least 2:1. Alternatively, either the composting process should take longer, or the poorly-matured compost be applied far in advance of sowing a crop so that complementary biological processes can take place in the soil, as recorded in the second cycle of lettuce. Ash from hop stems did not benefit the composting process and proved itself not to be worth using in mixtures.

Roles of non-ionic surfactant sucrose ester on the conversion of organic matters and bacterial community structure during composting

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sucrose ester (SE) addition on the physico-chemical parameters, organic matter (OM) biodegradation and related bacterial communities structure in dairy manure and cassava residuals co-composting. The biodegradation rates of OM, dissolved organic matters (DOM) and lignocellulose in SE (16.34%, 44.11% and 26.73%) group were higher than those in CK (14.71%, 39.11% and 19.90%). In addition, the content of humic substances (HS) (36.34%) in SE was obviously higher than that in CK (17.68%). The relative abundance of bacterial community in SE changed, in which the abundance of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria increased, while the amount of Blastomonas decreased. Redundancy analysis indicated Bacillus and Acinetobacter were positively correlated with the temperature and OM, whereas Azomonas and Luteimonas showed a positive relation with pH. In conclusion, the amendment of SE accelerated the degradation and conversion of organic matters, enhanced the formation of HS and improved the quality of compost.

Optimization of Food Waste and Biochar In-Vessel Co-Composting

As bulking agents (BA) affect the composting process, this work examined the impact of combinations of different organic components in order to obtain an efficient co-substrate for food waste (FW) in-vessel composting. To boost the occurrence of microorganisms inhabiting the compost, mature compost was firstly coupled with wheat straw, added to FW, and considered as a control (BC0). Then, two trials (BC10, BC20) including 10% and 20% of biochar were monitored. The results indicated that the temperature of the amended bioreactors was notably increased compared to the unamended one. Thermophilic temperatures were achieved at 14, 34, and 78 h after the experimental setup for BC20, BC10, and BC0, which lasted for 14, 17, and 12 days, respectively. When it came to an assessment of maturity and stability, the quality of the compost was evaluated against several indicators and compared with the compost quality standards of the UK, France, Canada, the USA, Poland, and Germany. BC10 illustrated a high-quality product in relation to the heavy metal concentration, a C:N ratio which reached 14.97, an AT4 which was lower than 6 (4.36 mg O2/g TS), and a nitrification index of 2.61 (<3). Consequently, the addition of 10% of biochar as a co-substrate showed an improvement of the process evolution and the characteristics of the biofertilizer produced.

Influence of saprophytic fungi and inorganic additives on enzyme activities and chemical properties of the biodegradation process of wheat straw for the production of organo-mineral amendments

Cellulose and lignin as main components of crop residues have a significant influence on composting operations and composition of the final products. Both are strongly associated, and lignin can be considered an important barrier during the biodegradation process of lignocellulosic materials. Saprophytic fungi are efficient lignin degraders due to their complex enzymatic system. Therefore, the influence of the inoculation of saprophytic fungi (Coriolopsis rigida, Pleurotus ostreatus, Trichoderma harzianum and Trametes versicolor) and the supply of inorganic additives (Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃ and allophanic soil) that promote the stabilization of carbon (C), were analyzed in the biodegradation of wheat straw (WS). The activity of Laccase (LAC), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and β-glucosidase and changes in temperature, pH and E₄/E₆ ratio were analyzed in a biodegradation process of 126 days. The activity of LAC, MnP and the E₄/E₆ ratio were significantly influenced and increased (enzymes) by fungi species, inorganic additives, and time of inorganic material addition, as well as their interactions (p < 0.05). The WS inoculated with T. versicolor showed the highest average activities for LAC, MnP and β-glucosidase (2000, 220 UL^-1 and 400 μmol pNP g^-1 h^-1 respectively). Furthermore, the addition of Al₂O₃ and Fe₂O₃ increased all the activities regarded to the decomposition of WS and influenced the changes associated with the stabilization of OM in composted WS. In conclusion, the inoculation of WS with T. versicolor in combination with metal oxides improved the enzyme related to the biodegradation process of WS favorizing its stabilization in the medium time, which is of importance in the composting of residues with high C/N ratio.
