Abstract
In anaerobic digestion (AD), the choice of inoculum type seems to be relevant for methane production for complex substrates, such as lignocellulosic material. Previous work demonstrated that the addition of fresh manure and ruminal fluid to anaerobic sludge improved methane productivity and kinetics of AD of crude sugarcane bagasse (CSB). Considering that the improvement of methane production could be a result of a more adapted microbial community, the present study performed the Next Generation Sequencing analysis to identify changes in the microbiome of anaerobic sludge inoculum, resulting from fresh manure and ruminal fluid addition. In comparison with AD performed only with anaerobic sludge inoculum (50:50, U), accumulated methane production was 15% higher with anaerobic sludge plus ruminal fluid inoculum (50:50, UR) and even higher (68%) with anaerobic sludge with fresh bovine manure inoculum (50:50, UFM), reaching the value of 143 NmLCH4.gVS-1. Clostridium species were highly abundant in all inocula, playing an important role during the hydrolysis and fermentation of CSB, and detoxifying potential inhibitors. Microbial composition also revealed the occurrence of Pseudomonas and Anaerobaculum at UFM inoculum that seem to have contributed to the higher methane production rate, mainly due to their hydrolytic and fermentative ability on lignocellulosic substrates. On the other hand, the presence of Alcaligenes might have had a negative effect on methane production due to their ability to perform methane oxidation.

Abstract
The metagenomic approach stands as a powerful technique for examining the composition of microbial communities and their involvement in various anaerobic digestion (AD) systems. Understanding the structure, function, and dynamics of microbial communities becomes pivotal for optimizing the biogas process, enhancing its stability and improving overall performance. Currently, taxonomic profiling of biogas-producing communities relies mainly on high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing, offering insights into the bacterial and archaeal structures of AD assemblages and their correlations with fed substrates and process parameters. To delve even deeper, shotgun and genome-centric metagenomic approaches are employed to recover individual genomes from the metagenome. This provides a nuanced understanding of collective functionalities, interspecies interactions, and microbial associations with abiotic factors. The application of OMICs in AD systems holds the potential to revolutionize the field, leading to more efficient and sustainable waste management practices particularly through the implementation of precision anaerobic digestion systems. As ongoing research in this area progresses, anticipations are high for further exciting developments in the future. This review serves to explore the current landscape of metagenomic analyses, with focus on advancing our comprehension and critically evaluating biases and recommendations in the analysis of microbial communities in anaerobic digesters. Its objective is to explore how contemporary metagenomic approaches can be effectively applied to enhance our understanding and contribute to the refinement of the AD process. This marks a substantial stride towards achieving a more comprehensive understanding of anaerobic digestion systems.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) is a vital technology in the decarburization of the economy because of its ability to process organic waste, recover nutrients, and create biogas as a sustainable biofuel all at the same time. This attribute also makes this technology a viable partner in pursuing a circular economic model. However, the poor biogas output of typical substrates like sewage sludge and animal manure and the hefty installation costs limit its viability. This review paper with literature analysis provides a good grasp of the anaerobic co-digesting process with diverse food digestion methods. In this survey, we have analyzed the Anaerobic Digestion of water waste, food waste, and animal manure and the anaerobic co-digestion of animal waste with water waste and food waste with water waste. This analysis demonstrates that anaerobic co-digestion produces more methane biogas than anaerobic digestion. Also, it has been shown that by adjusting the ratio of food and animal waste to water waste, we can produce more methane. In the future, we would like to supplement anaerobic co-digestion by altering the proportion of different wastes that are mixed with water waste in order to increase methane production.

Abstract
A three-dimensional (3D) macroporous reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole (rGO/Ppy) hydrogel assembled by bacterial cells was fabricated and applied for microbial fuel cells. By taking the advantage of electroactive cell-induced bioreduction of graphene oxide and in-situ polymerization of Ppy, a facile self-assembly by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1and in-situ polymerization approach for 3D rGO/Ppy hydrogel preparation was developed. This facile one-step self-assembly process enabled the embedding of living electroactive cells inside the hydrogel electrode, which showed an interconnected 3D macroporous structures with high conductivity and biocompatibility. Electrochemical analysis indicated that the self-assembly of cell-embedding rGO/Ppy hydrogel enhanced the electrochemical activity of the bioelectrode and reduced the electron charge transfer resistance between the cells and the electrode. Impressively, extremely high power output of 3366 ± 42 mW m-2 was achieved from the MFC with cell-embedding rGO/Ppy hydrogel rGO/Ppy, which was 8.6 times of that delivered from the MFC with bare electrode. Further analysis indicated that the increased cell loading by the hydrogel and improved electrochemical activity by the rGO/Ppy composite would be the underlying mechanism for this performance improvement. This study provided a facile approach to fabricate the biocompatible and electrochemical active 3D nanocomposites for MFC, which would also be promising for performance optimization of various bioelectrochemical systems.

Abstract
In this study, food waste saccharified residue was used to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and the effects of substrate concentration on VFA production, VFA composition, acidogenic efficiency, microbial community, and carbon transfer were investigated. Interestingly, chain elongation from acetate to n-butyrate played an important role with a substrate concentration of 200 g/L in the acidogenesis process. Results showed that 200 g/L was a suitable substrate concentration for both VFA and n-butyrate production, the highest VFA production, and n-butyrate composition were 280.87 mg COD/g vS and more than 90.00 %, respectively, and VFA/SCOD reached 82.39 %. Microbial analysis showed that Clostridium_Sensu_Stricto_12 promoted n-butyrate production by chain elongation. Carbon transfer analysis indicated that chain elongation made a contribution of 43.93 % to n-butyrate production. Totally 38.47 % of organic matter in food waste saccharified residue was further utilized. This study provides a new way for n-butyrate production with waste recycling and low cost.

Abstract
Food waste (FW) and fruit, vegetable waste (FVW) are important components of municipal solid waste, yet the performance and related mechanisms of anaerobic co-digestion of FW and FVW for methane production have been rarely investigated. In order to get a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved, the mesophilic FW and FVW anaerobic co-digestion in different proportions was investigated. The experimental results showed that when the ratio of FW and FVW was 1/1 (in terms of volatile suspended solid), the maximum biomethane yield of 269.9 mL/g TCOD from the codigested substrate is significantly higher than that in FW or FVW anaerobic digestion alone. FW and FVW co-digestion promoted the dissolution and biotransformation of organic matter. When the recommended mixing ratio was applied, the maximum concentration of dissolved chemical oxygen demand (COD) was high as 11971 mg/L. FW and FVW co-digestion reduced the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the digestive system, thus reducing its negative impact on the methanogenesis process. FW and FVW co-digestion process synergistically enhanced microbial activity. The analysis of microbial population structure showed that when FW and FVW were co-digested at the recommended ratio, the relative abundance of Proteiniphilum increased to 26.5%, and the relative abundances of Methanosaeta and Candidatus Methanofastidiosum were also significantly increased. The results of this work provide a certain amount of theoretical basis and technical support for the co-digestion of FW and FVW.

Abstract
:Deterioration of dewaterability is one of challenges faced by anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW). The underlying mechanism of the effect of AD on digestate dewaterability remains unclear. Thus, the effect of hydrophilic functional groups of macromolecular organic on FW digestate dewaterability in different stages during AD was studied. Results showed that the dewaterability first improved at the acidification stage, and then worsened at the gasification and stabilization stages. The correlations between normalized capillary suction time (NCST), bound moisture (BM) and extracellular protein (extra-PN) were significant (R = 0.736, p < 0.05, R = 0.637, p < 0.05). Macromolecular extra-PN that enhance the bonding between organic fractions and moisture via peptide bonds. In addition, carbonyl, phenolic and amide groups increased after AD, resulting in the enhancement of the digestate hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the evolution of microbial community during AD resulting in the wrapping of BM by increased organic fractions. Therefore, higher organic fractions with hydrophilic functional groups in digestate strongly hinder moisture removal. The findings obtained deepen our understanding of hydrophilic functional groups of macromolecular organic affecting FW digestate dewaterability and provide strong supports to treatment and disposal of FW digestate.

Abstract
This study investigated the temporal dynamics of digestion efficiency and community stability in digesters fed with waste activated sludge (WAS), straw (STR-AD), food waste (FW-AD) and mixture of straw-and-food waste (STR-FW-AD). Results showed that carbon removals of recalcitrant substrates (i.e., 48.2 ± 3.9% in WAS-AD and 57.8 ± 4.9% in STR-AD) were lower than that of labile substrates (i.e., 70.7 ± 4.0% in FW-AD). Nonetheless, carbon removal of recalcitrant substrates was largely improved through co-digestion (70.3 ± 3.2% in STR-FW-AD). In contrast to monopoly communities (e.g., the highly enriched Paludibacter) fed with the labile substrates, recalcitrant substrates supported highly diverse communities. Accordingly, the medians of negative/positive cohesions of communities in WAS-AD, STR-AD, STR-FW-AD and FW-AD decreased from 0.86 to 0.63, suggesting their decreasing community stability. Microbial source tracking analyses showed the major contribution of the STR-AD community to the co-digestion community. This study provided unprecedented mechanistic insight into stability improvement of substrate co-digestion on the methanogenic digestion microbiome.

Abstract
Microbial communities were monitored in terms of structure, function and response to physicochemical variables during anaerobic digestion of tannery and associated slaughterhouse effluent in: (i) 2 L biochemical methane potential batch reactors at different inoculum to substrate ratios (2-5) and initial sulfate concentrations (665-2000 mg/L), and (ii) 20 L anaerobic sequencing batch reactors with different mixing regimes (continuous vs. intermittent). Methanogenic and sulfidogenic community compositions in the 2 L reactors evolved initially, but stabilised after the start of biogas generation, although significant (ANOSIM p < 0.05) changes in the physicochemical parameters indicated continued metabolic activity. Both hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic archaeal genera were present in high relative abundances. Continuous stirring preferentially selected the metabolically versatile genus Methanosarcina, suggesting that higher specific methane generation in the continuously stirred system (168 vs. 19.5 mL methane per gram volatile solids per week) was related to the metabolic activities of members of this genus.

Abstract
Biogas production from organic waste is a waste-to-energy technology with the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable energy production. Upgrading of biogas using in situ biomethanation with hydrogen has the potential for surplus electricity storage, and delivery of biogas with a methane content of >90%, allowing for easier integration into the natural gas grid, as well as conversion to other products. Microbial communities in biomethanation reactors undergo changes, however, these changes are largely unexplored. In the present study, metagenome-resolved protein stable isotope probing (Protein-SIP) was applied to laboratory scale batch incubations operating under anaerobic digestion, and (pre-adapted) biomethanation conditions, fed with 13C-labelled bicarbonate, in order to gain insight into the microbial activities during CO2-reduction. The strongest and most microbially diverse isotopic incorporation was observed in the pre-adapted biomethanation incubation. Furthermore, divergent incorporation of 13C-labelled bicarbonate was also observed in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, with the anaerobic digester incubations primarily showing labelled proteins in the peripheral pathways leading toward production of energy and biomass. The pre-adapted biomethanation incubations consumed H2 and CO2, but did not convert it to CH4, suggesting the production of acetate in these incubations, which was supported by heavy labelling of key enzymes in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Twelve (ten high quality) metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) coding for 13C-incorporated proteins were extracted from the metagenome, eight of which contained one or more of the key genes in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, one of which was affiliated to Methanosarcina. Together, the findings in the present study deepen our knowledge surrounding microbial communities in biomethanation systems, and contribute to the development of better strategies for implementation of biogas upgrading and microbial management.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of different bulking agents (i.e., sawdust, wheat straw, rice straw, and corncob) on bacterial structure and functions for organic degradation during food waste in-situ rapid biological reduction (IRBR) inoculated with microbial agent. Results showed that the highest organic degradation (409.5 g/kg total solid) and volatile solids removal efficiency (41.0%) were achieved when wheat straw was used, largely because the degradation of readily degradable substrates and cellulose was promoted by this bulking agent. Compared with other three bulking agents, the utilization of wheat straw was conducive to construct a more suitable environmental condition (moisture content of 18.0-28.2%, pH of 4.91-5.87) for organic degradation during IRBR process, by virtue of its excellent structural and physiochemical properties. Microbial community analysis suggested that the high-moisture environment in rice straw treatment promoted the growth of Staphylococcus and inhibited the activity of the inoculum. By contrast, lowest bacterial richness was observed in corncob treatment due to the faster water loss. Compared with these two bulking agents, sawdust and wheat straw treatment led to a more stable bacterial community structure, and the inoculated Bacillus gradually became the dominant genus (36.6-57.8%) in wheat straw treatment. Predicted metagenomics analysis showed that wheat straw treatment exhibited the highest carbohydrate metabolism activity which improved the pyruvate, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and thereby promoted the organic degradation and humic substrate production. These results indicated that wheat straw was a more desirable bulking agent, and revealed the potential microbial organics degradation mechanism in IRBR process.

Abstract
This work was aimed to evaluate the distinctive food waste (FW) organic loading rates (OLR) on methanogen and nitrifying genes dynamics and its correlation with identified relative abundance of bacterial dynamics during the anaerobic digestion. This experiment were carried out in the digesters at high OLR of food wastes at (4 to 8 g volatile solids/liter/day reactor R1) and (6 to 10 g volatile solids/liter/day reactor R2). The results shown that the relative abundance of mcrA, mcrB and mcrG genes were richest in the first day of both R1 and R2. In addition, the most of nitrifying genes were greater in after 34 days digestion in R2, while these genes did not show the specific regularity in R1. Finally, the correlation figure shows that Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera were significantly correlated with the different organic acids and methanogen and nitrifying genes dynamics.

Abstract
AIMS Geosmin is associated with off-flavour problems in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and represents an economic problem for the aquaculture industry. This study aims at investigating factors influencing the composition of the bacterial microbiota, in particular the presence of geosmin producers and the environmental and farming factors favouring geosmin accumulation. METHODS AND RESULTS Several water quality parameters were correlated to the composition of the microbiota with special emphasis on the presence of geosmin producers within 26 different RAS from four European countries. Three novel groups of geosmin-producing bacteria were quantified to identify potential correlations with geosmin concentration. CONCLUSIONS The microbiome differed significantly between systems. However, phosphate levels, calcium levels and redox potential correlated to geosmin concentration in the water and the presence of the Actinomycetales geosmin-producers but not with the presence of other groups of geosmin-producing bacteria. Oxygen levels and conductivity were found to negatively correlate with geosmin concentration. A large proportion of the detected geosmin producers represented novel taxonomic groups not previously linked with this activity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These results improve our understanding of the diversity of microbiota in RAS and the water quality parameters favouring the populations of geosmin-producing bacteria and the production of geosmin.

Abstract
This study proposed the selection of cost-effective additives generated from different activity sectors to enhance and stabilize the start-up, as well as the transitional phases, of semi-continuous food waste (FW) anaerobic digestion. The results showed that combining agricultural waste mixtures including wheat straw (WS) and cattle manure (CM) boosted the process performance and generated up to 95% higher methane yield compared to the control reactors (mono-digested FW) under an organic loading rate (OLR) range of 2 to 3 kg VS/m3·d. Whereas R3 amended with unmarketable biochar (UBc), to around 10% of the initial fresh mass inserted, showed a significant process enhancement during the transitional phase, and more particularly at an OLR of 4 kg VS/m3·d, it was revealed that under these experimental conditions, FW reactors including UBc showed an increase of 144% in terms of specific biogas yield (SBY) compared to FW reactors fed with agricultural residue. Hence, both agricultural and industrial waste were efficacious when it came to boosting either FW anaerobic performance or AD effluent quality. Although each co-substrate performed under specific experimental conditions, this feature provides decision makers with diverse alternatives to implement a sustainable organic waste management system, conveying sufficient technical details to draw up appropriate designs for the recovery of various types of organic residue.

Abstract
The zero-waste project in Turkey, which was started in 2017, is planned to be implemented until 2023, starting from public institutions and organizations. However, in refectories where high amounts of organic waste are generated, these organic wastes are generally transported to the landfill site by the municipalities and, consequently, they go beyond the scope of the zero-waste project. In this study, the anaerobic treatment of refectory wastes based on the scope of the zero-waste approach in Turkey has been developed as an innovative and holistic approach. As a result of the informing studies in the refectories, the waste of bread could be zero, while the waste of meals could not be zero, but a significant decrease in meal waste was found. In addition, this holistic approach has also strengthened recycling. Anaerobic digestion was selected to complete the zero-waste target for food wastes that are still generated. In the study using the UASB reactor operated in mesophilic conditions (36.5-37 °C), feeding has been done with approximately 21.9 kg VSadded m-3 OLR in 10-day HRT. As a result, it was observed that the production of biogas and organic fertilizers from food waste using anaerobic technologies is an important solution on behalf of realizing the zero-waste application. The results showed that 1 kg of food waste with 62 ± 3.2% solid content could produce 640 L of biogas with approximately 62.2 ± 0.6% methane content. In addition, a 26.2-L bio-fertilizer with an average COD concentration of 3354 ± 106 mg L-1 was produced. This research paper with a successful method at the Adıyaman University in Turkey focuses on the goal of zero waste. This study illustrated how it is possible to implement an effective initiative to reduce food waste with a holistic approach.

Abstract
Omics have given rise to research on sparsely studied microbial communities such as the landfill, lignocellulolytic microorganisms and enzymes. The bacterial diversity of Municipal Solid Waste sediments was determined using the illumina MiSeq system after DNA extraction and Polymerase chain reactions. Data analysis was used to determine the community's richness, diversity, and correlation with environmental factors. Physicochemical studies revealed sites with mesophilic and thermophilic temperature ranges and a mixture of acidic and alkaline pH values. Temperature and moisture content showed the highest correlation with the bacteria community. The bacterial analysis of the community DNA revealed 357,030 effective sequences and 1891 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) assigned. Forty phyla were found, with the dominant phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidota, while Aerococcus, Stenotrophomonas, and Sporosarcina were the dominant species. PICRUSt provided insight on community's metabolic function, which was narrowed down to search for lignocellulolytic enzymes' function. Cellulase, xylanase, esterase, and peroxidase were gene functions inferred from the data. This article reports on the first phylogenetic analysis of the Pulau Burung landfill bacterial community. These results will help to improve the understanding of organisms dominant in the landfill and the corresponding enzymes that contribute to lignocellulose breakdown.

Abstract
The enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic polymers is generally considered the rate-limiting step to methane production in anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass. The present study aimed to investigate how the hydrolytic microbial communities of three different types of anaerobic digesters adapted to lignocellulose-rich wheat straw in continuous stirred tank reactors operated for 134 days. Cellulase and xylanase activities were monitored weekly using fluorescently-labeled model substrates and the enzymatic profiles were correlated with changes in microbial community compositions based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to identify key species involved in lignocellulose degradation. The enzymatic activity profiles and microbial community changes revealed reactor-specific adaption of phylogenetically different hydrolytic communities. The enzymatic activities correlated significantly with changes in specific taxonomic groups, including representatives of Ruminiclostridium, Caldicoprobacter, Ruminofilibacter, Ruminococcaceae, Treponema, and Clostridia order MBA03, all of which have been linked to cellulolytic and xylanolytic activity in the literature. By identifying microorganisms with similar development as the cellulase and xylanase activities, the proposed correlation method constitutes a promising approach for deciphering essential cellulolytic and xylanolytic microbial groups for anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a green technology widely applied to food waste treatment. Although the AD has high efficiency, instability often occurs. The main purpose of the study is to understand the mechanism of modified biochar improving AD performance. The effects of different modified biochar on the efficiency and microecology of an anaerobic reactor treating food waste were investigated. Bagasse biochar was used as the substrate to explore the effects of iron-modified (A), chitosan-modified (B), iron-chitosan-modified (C) and iron‑magnesium-chitosan-modified (D) biochar on the anaerobic digestion process, sludge characteristics and microbial community. The results show that the average COD removal efficiency of the four reactors during the last five days of the experimentation period was 86.95%, 85.90%, 92.22% and 93.29%, respectively. Adding iron‑magnesium-chitosan-modified biochar could improve the efficiency of COD removal in the anaerobic reactor under ammonia nitrogen stress. On day 10 of operation, the content of coenzyme F420 in the sludge of anaerobic reactors C and D reached to 0.44 and 0.57 mmol/g, respectively, indicating that the metal-chitosan complex biochar could promote the production of coenzyme F420 in the early stage of the experiment. Within the four anaerobic reactors, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were the dominant bacteria, and the abundance of Chloroflexi reached a maximum of 26.24% in the reactor C. As for archaea, Methanobacterium and Methanothrix were the most dominant accounting for 44.03%, 49.88%, 31.29%, 52.01% and 38.34%, 34.52%, 50.9%, 35.72% respectively in the four reactors. KEGG functional analysis showed that the energy metabolism of bacteria and archaea in the reactor D was the largest among the four reactors. Meanwhile, the gene abundance associated with carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport of microorganisms in the reactor D was greater than that of other groups.

Abstract
According to the US Department of Energy, succinic acid (SA) is a top platform chemical that can be produced from biomass. Bread waste, which has high starch content, is the second most wasted food in the UK and can serve as a potential low cost feedstock for the production of SA. This work evaluates the environmental performance of a proposed biorefinery concept for SA production by fermentation of waste bread using a cradle-to-factory gate life cycle assessment approach. The performance was assessed in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and non-renewable energy use (NREU). Waste bread fermentation demonstrated a better environmental profile compared to the fossil-based system, however, GHG emissions were about 50% higher as compared to processes using other biomass feedstocks such as corn wet mill or sorghum grains. NREU for fermentative SA production using waste bread was significantly lower (~ 46%) than fossil-based system and about the same as that of established biomass-based processes, thus proving the great potential of waste bread as a valuable feedstock for bioproduction of useful chemicals. The results show that steam and heating oil used in the process were the biggest contributors to the NREU and GHG emissions. Sensitivity analyses highlighted the importance of the solid biomass waste generated in the process which can potentially be used as fish feed. The LCA analysis can be used for targeted optimization of SA production from bread waste, thereby enabling the utilization of an otherwise waste stream and leading to the establishment of a circular economy.

Abstract
Hotels face many issues related to food waste management, which is considered a serious environmental and socioeconomic issue in the 21st century. The improper disposal of food waste causes greenhouse gases emissions, consequently badly affecting the environment. This research aims to measure the impact of customer trends in changing the pattern of food waste disposal and recycling into bioenergy relating to hotel purposes and contributing to reducing hotel energy costs in Egypt. Two survey questionnaires were designed for hotel managers and guests, with 25 and 300 forms, respectively. The results indicated that hotel managers are highly willing to recycle food waste to produce bioenergy and hence play an effective role in environmental preservation. Such alternative energy sources are less expensive than conventional ones. This study revealed guests’ intentions to participate in the process of preserving the surrounding environment, as well as their preferences to stay in hotels that are practicing food waste recycling operations. Limitations can be seen in the lack of advertising for such hotels as well the high cost of staying in green and ecological hotels.
