Effect of the number of Cyperus rotundus and medium height on the performance of batch-constructed wetland in treating aquaculture effluent

Increasing aquaculture cultivation produces large quantities of wastewater. If not handled properly, it can have negative impacts on the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are one of the phytoremediation methods that can be applied to treat aquaculture effluent. This research was aimed at determining the performance of Cyperus rotundus in removing COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate from the batch CW system. Treatment was carried out for 30 days with variations in the number of plants (10, 15, and 20) and variations in media height (10, 12, and 14 cm). The result showed that aquaculture effluent contains high levels of organic compounds and nutrients, and C. rotundus can grow and thrive in 100% of aquaculture effluent. Besides that, the use of C. rotundus in CWs with the effect of numbers of plants and media height showed performance of COD, BOD, TSS, turbidity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate with 70, 79, 90, 96, 64, 82, 92, and 48% of removal efficacy, respectively. There was no negative impact observed on C. rotundus growth after exposure to aquaculture effluent, as indicated by the increase in wet weight, dry weight, and growth rate when compared to the control. Thus, adding aquaculture effluent to CWs planted with C. rotundus supports the growth and development of plants while also performing phytoremediation.

Technological and economic analysis of electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soil: A global perspective and its application in Indian scenario

Globally million hectares of land annually is getting contaminated by heavy metalloids like As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Se, with current concentrations in soil above geo-baseline or regulatory standards. The heavy metals are highly toxic, mobile, and persistent and hence require immediate and effective mitigation. There are many available remediation techniques like surface capping, encapsulation, landfilling, soil flushing, soil washing, electrokinetic extraction, stabilization, solidification, vitrification, phytoremediation, and bioremediation which have been evolved to clean up heavy metal-contaminated sites. Nevertheless, all of the technologies have some applicability and limitations making the soil remediation initiative unsustainable. Among the available technologies, electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has been comparatively recognized to mitigate contaminated sites via both in-situ and ex-situ approaches due to its efficiency, suitability for use in low permeability soil, and requirement of low potential gradient. The work critically analyzes the EKR concerning techno, economic, and sustainability aspect for evaluating its application on various substrates and environmental conditions. The current soil contamination status in India is presented and the application of EKR for the heavy metal remediation from soil has been evaluated. The present work summaries a comprehensive and exhaustive review on EKR technology proving its effectiveness for a country like India where the huge amount of waste generated could not be treated due to lack of infrastructure, technology, and economic constraints.

A new LDH based sustained-release carbon source filter media to achieve advanced denitrogenation of low C/N wastewater at low temperature

Advanced denitrogenation of wastewater is now facing major challenges brought by low C/N ratio and low temperature. The development of sustained-release materials with good and stable carbon release properties was an effective countermeasure. FeNi-Layered double-metal hydroxides (LDH)- sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) filter media and its potential use in heterotrophic and sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification biological filter (DNBF), was firstly reported. It demonstrated stable structure and good carbon release performance with a mass transfer coefficient (K) of 4.40 mg·L^-1·s^-1. When the influent NO₃^--N of 50 mg/L with the C/N ratio of 3 at 10 °C, the maximum nitrogen loading rate of 0.22 kg·N/(m³·d) and effluent TN close to 5 mg/L (nitrogen removal of almost 90 %) could be achieved. The slowly released carbon source and the leached iron increased the abundance of denitrifying bacteria and functional genes, and the augmentation of Sulfuritalea and the secretion of biofilm protein stimulated by sulfur also played a synergistic role. This study provided a new potentially effective strategy to enhance advanced denitrification of wastewater of low C/N wastewater at low temperature.
