Physicochemical reactions in e-waste recycling

Electronic waste (e-waste) recycling is becoming a global concern owing to its immense quantity, hazardous character and the potential loss of valuable metals. The many processes involved in e-waste recycling stem from a mixture of physicochemical reactions, and understanding the principles of these reactions can lead to more efficient recycling methods. In this Review, we discuss the principles behind photochemistry, thermochemistry, mechanochemistry, electrochemistry and sonochemistry for metal recovery, polymer decomposition and pollutant elimination from e-waste. We also discuss how these processes induce or improve reaction rates, selectivity and controllability of e-waste recycling based on thermodynamics and kinetics, free radicals, chemical bond energy, electrical potential regulation and more. Lastly, key factors, limitations and suggestions for improvements of these physicochemical reactions for e-waste recycling are highlighted, wherein we also indicate possible research directions for the future.

Mixed crushing and competitive leaching of all electrode material components and metal collector fluid in the spent lithium battery

Hydrometallurgy is a primary method for recovering cathode electrode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Most of the current research materials are pure cathode electrode materials obtained through manual disassembly. However, the spent LIBs are typically broken as a whole during the actual industrial recycling which makes the electrode materials combined with the collector fluid. Therefore, the competitive leaching between metal collector fluid and electrode material was examined. The pyrolysis characteristics of the electrode materials were analyzed to determine the pyrolysis temperature. The electrode sheet was pyrolyzed and then crushed for competitive leaching. The effect of pyrolysis was analyzed by XPS. The competitive leaching behavior was studied based on leaching agent concentration, leaching time and leaching temperature. The composition and morphology of the residue were determined to prove the competitive leaching results by XRD-SEM. TG results showed that 500 °C was the suitable pyrolysis temperature. XPS analysis demonstrated that pyrolysis can completely remove PVDF. Li and Co were preferentially leached during the competitive leaching while the leaching rates were 90.10% and 93.40% with 50 min leaching at 70 °C. The Al and Cu had weak competitive leachability and the leaching rate was 29.10% and 0.00%. XRD-SEM analysis showed that Li and Co can be fully leached with residual Al and Cu remaining. The results showed that the mixed leaching of electrode materials is feasible based on its excellent selective leaching properties.

Elucidating sulfate radical-induced oxidizing mechanisms of solid-phase pharmaceuticals: Comparison with liquid-phase reactions

As a class of organic micropollutants of global concern, pharmaceuticals have prevalent distributions in the aqueous environment (e.g., groundwater and surface water) and solid matrices (e.g., soil, sediments, and dried sludge). Their contamination levels have been further aggravated by the annually increased production of expired drugs as emerging harmful wastes worldwide. Sulfate radicals (SO4•-)-based oxidation has attracted increasing attention for abating pharmaceuticals in the environment, whereas the transformation mechanisms of solid-phase pharmaceuticals remain unknown thus far. This investigation presented for the first time that SO4•-, individually produced by mechanical force-activated and heat-activated persulfate treatments, could effectively oxidize three model pharmaceuticals (i.e., methotrexate, sitagliptin, and salbutamol) in both solid and liquid phases. The high-resolution mass spectrometric analysis suggested their distinct transformation products formed by different phases of SO4•- oxidation. Accordingly, the SO4•--mediated mechanistic differences between the solid-phase and liquid-phase pharmaceuticals were proposed. It is noteworthy that the products from both systems were predicted with the remaining persistence, bioaccumulation, and multi-endpoint toxicity. Therefore, some post-treatment strategies need to be considered during practical applications of SO4•--based technologies in remediating different phases of micropollutants. This work has environmental implications for understanding the comparative transformation mechanisms of pharmaceuticals by SO4•- oxidation in remediating the contaminated solid and aqueous matrices.

Strengthening Fe(II)/Fe(III) Dynamic Cycling by Surface Sulfation to Achieve Efficient Electrochemical Uranium Extraction at Ultralow Cell Voltage

Electrochemically mediated Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox-coupled uranium extraction can efficiently reduce the cell voltage of electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE). How to regulate the surface structure to enhance the uranium acyl ion adsorption capacity and strengthen the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle process is crucial for EUE. In this work, we developed surface sulfated nanoreduced iron (S-NRI) for EUE and exhibited improved properties for EUE at an ultralow cell voltage (-0.1 V). Compared with a nanoreduced iron (NRI) adsorbent, S-NRI displayed faster electrochemical extraction kinetics properties and higher extraction efficiency and capacity for uranium. In a more complex seawater electrolyte containing uranyl ion concentration ranging from 1 to 20 ppm, the removal efficiency could reach almost ∼100% after EUE for 24 h. At a higher 50 ppm uranium acyl ion concentration in a seawater electrolyte, S-NRI exhibited higher extraction capacity (755.03 mg/g), which is better than 528.53 mg/g of NRI at a cell voltage of -0.1 V. Outstanding EUE property could be attributed to the fact that sulfate species (M-SO42-) on the S-NRI surface not only enhanced selective adsorption of uranyl ions but also strengthened the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle, which accelerated electron transfer between Fe(II) and U(VI), promoted the regeneration of Fe(II) active sites, and finally enhanced the EUE property.

Application of zeolite synthesized from coal fly ash via wet milling as a sustainable resource on lead(II) removal

In this work, zeolite based on coal fly ash was firstly synthesized via wet milling for the adsorption of lead (Pb(II)). The effects of contact time, solid-to-liquid ratio and initial pH of solution on Pb(II) removal were investigated in detail. The experimental data showed that synthesized zeolite has high adsorption capacity of 99.082 mg of Pb(II) per gram of adsorbent. Coal fly ash zeolite synthesized by wet milling has good Pb(II) adsorption performance when the initial pH of the solution is above 5. The adsorption kinetic results demonstrated that removal of Pb(II) via the synthesized zeolite followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results directly demonstrated the adsorption between Pb(II) and synthesized zeolite, and a possible reaction pathway was proposed. Specifically, the removing mechanism of Pb(II) from aqueous solution via the synthesized zeolite involves two stages: one is that Pb(II) in aqueous solution is absorbed on the interior of the synthesized zeolite, and the other is chemical precipitation.

A mechanochemical method for one-step leaching of metals from spent LIBs

A one-step system based on mechanochemical activation and the use of grape skins (GS) was proposed to recover metals from lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) cathode waste. The effects of the ball-milling (BM) speed, BM time, and quantity of added GS on the metal leaching rate were explored. The spent lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and its leaching residue before and after mechanochemistry were characterized by SEM, BET, PSD, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS analysis. Our study shows that mechanochemistry promotes the leaching efficiency of metals from LIBs battery cathode waste by changing the cathode material properties (that is, reducing the LCO particle size (12.126 μm ∼ 0.0928 μm), increasing the specific surface area (0.123 m²/g ∼ 15.957 m²/g), enhancing the hydrophilicity and surface free energy (57.44 mN/m² ∼ 66.18 mN/m²), promoting the generation of mesoporous structures, refining grains, disrupting the crystal structure, and increasing the microscopic strain, while deflecting the binding energy of the metal ions). A green, efficient and environmentally friendly process for the harmless and resource-friendly treatment of spent LIBs has been developed in this study.

E-waste recycled materials as efficient catalysts for renewable energy technologies and better environmental sustainability

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment exponentially increased due to the innovation and the ever-increasing demand for electronic products in our life. The quantities of electronic waste (e-waste) produced are expected to reach 44.4 million metric tons over the next five years. Consequently, the global market for electronics recycling is expected to reach $65.8 billion by 2026. However, electronic waste management in developing countries is not appropriately handled, as only 17.4% has been collected and recycled. The inadequate electronic waste treatment causes significant environmental and health issues and a systematic depletion of natural resources in secondary material recycling and extracting valuable materials. Electronic waste contains numerous valuable materials that can be recovered and reused to create renewable energy technologies to overcome the shortage of raw materials and the adverse effects of using non-renewable energy resources. Several approaches were devoted to mitigate the impact of climate change. The cooperate social responsibilities supported integrating informal collection and recycling agencies into a well-structured management program. Moreover, the emission reductions resulting from recycling and proper management systems significantly impact climate change solutions. This emission reduction will create a channel in carbon market mechanisms by trading the CO2 emission reductions. This review provides an up-to-date overview and discussion of the different categories of electronic waste, the recycling methods, and the use of high recycled value-added (HAV) materials from various e-waste components in green renewable energy technologies.

Applications of crushing and grinding-based treatments for typical metal-containing solid wastes: Detoxification and resource recovery potentials

Metal-containing solid wastes can induce serious environmental pollution if managed improperly, but contain considerable resources. The detoxification and resource recoveries of these wastes are of both environmental and economic significances, being indispensable for circular economy. In the past decades, attempts have been made worldwide to treat these wastes. Crushing and grinding-based treatments have been increasingly applied, the operating apparatus and parameters of which depend on the waste type and treatment purpose. Based on the relevant studies, the applications of crushing and grinding on four major types of solid wastes, namely spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) cathode, waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), incineration bottom ash (IBA), and incineration fly ash (IFA) are here systematically reviewed. These types of solid wastes are generated in increasing amounts, and have the potentials to release various organic and inorganic pollutants. Despite of the widely different texture, composition, and other physicochemical properties of the solid wastes, crushing and grinding have been demonstrated to be universally applicable. For each of the four wastes, the technical route that involving crushing and grinding is described with the advantages highlighted. The crushing and grinding serve either mainstream or auxiliary role in the processing of the solid wastes. This review summarizes and highlights the developments and future directions of crushing and grinding-based treatments.

Removal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) by Free Radicals in Advanced Oxidation Processes

As emerging pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) have received extensive attention due to their high detection frequency (with concentrations ranging from ng/L to μg/L) and potential risk to aqueous environments and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are effective techniques for the removal of PPCPs from water environments. In AOPs, different types of free radicals (HO·, SO₄·^-, O₂·^-, etc.) are generated to decompose PPCPs into non-toxic and small-molecule compounds, finally leading to the decomposition of PPCPs. This review systematically summarizes the features of various AOPs and the removal of PPCPs by different free radicals. The operation conditions and comprehensive performance of different types of free radicals are summarized, and the reaction mechanisms are further revealed. This review will provide a quick understanding of AOPs for later researchers.
