Why does sulfate inhibit selenate reduction: Molybdenum deprivation from Mo-dependent selenate reductase

Selenium and concomitant anions removal in a fixed bed bioreactor to satisfy drinking water regulations and subsequent stability check of selenium-laden biosludge

This is the first successful report on selenium bio-attenuation to satisfy drinking water regulations as per Indian Standards (10 μg/L) in the presence of concomitant nitrate and sulfate from water sources utilizing a fixed bed bioreactor. The bioreactor was immunized with blended microbial culture and worked in downflow mode under anoxic conditions at 30 ± 2 °C for around 190 days under varying influent selenate (100-500 μg/L as selenium), nitrate (50 mg/L), sulfate concentrations (as per selenium removal) and necessary dose of acetic acid (as COD, a carbon source) in synthetic groundwater, operated at an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 45-120 min. After supplying an adequate dosage of sulfate and alteration of EBCT, selenium was found to comply with drinking water regulations and nitrate was completely removed. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses depicted nanocrystalline selenium sulfides (SeS and SeS2) formation as the possible mechanisms of selenium removal. Extended toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) extractions confirmed a maximum selenium leaching of 52 and 282 μg/L during anoxic and oxic extractions, respectively. Long-term column leaching (>3-month equilibration) under aerobic conditions at pH 7 confirmed the produced precipitate to be essentially stable (∼0.14% Se leaching). This work exhibits the synchronous bioremoval of selenium and its co-anions from contaminated water complying with drinking water standards, and leaving a stable and non-hazardous selenium-laden biosludge.

Microplastics promote methane emission in estuarine and coastal wetlands

Increasing microplastic (MP) pollution poses significant threats to estuarine and coastal ecosystems. However, the effects of MPs on the emission of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, within these ecosystems and the underlying regulatory mechanisms have not been elucidated. Here, a combination of 13C stable isotope-based method and molecular techniques was applied to investigate how conventional petroleum-based MPs [polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] and biodegradable MPs [polylactic acid (PLA) and polyadipate/butylene terephthalate (PBAT)] regulate CH4 production and consumption and thus affect CH4 emission dynamics in estuarine and coastal wetlands. Results indicated that both conventional and biodegradable MPs enhanced the emission of CH4 (P < 0.05), with the promoting effect being more significant for biodegradable MPs. However, the mechanisms by which conventional and biodegradable MPs promote CH4 emissions were different. Specifically, conventional MPs stimulated the emission of CH4 by inhibiting the processes of CH4 consumption, but had no significant effect on CH4 production rate. Nevertheless, biodegradable MPs promoted CH4 emissions via accelerating the activities the methanogens while inhibiting the oxidation of CH4, thus resulting in a higher degree of promoting effect on CH4 emissions than conventional MPs. Consistently, quantitative PCR further revealed a significant increase in the abundance of methyl-coenzyme M reductase gene (mcrA) of methanogens under the exposure of biodegradable MPs (P < 0.05), but not conventional MPs. Furthermore, the relative abundance of most genes involved in CH4 oxidation exhibited varying degrees of reduction after exposure to all types of MPs, based on metagenomics data. This study reveals the effects of MPs on CH4 emissions in estuarine and coastal ecosystems and their underlying mechanisms, highlighting that the emerging biodegradable MPs exhibited a greater impact than conventional MPs on promoting CH4 emissions in these globally important ecosystems, thereby accelerating global climate change.

Key energy metabolisms in modern living microbialites from hypersaline Andean lagoons of the Salar de Atacama, Chile

Microbialites are organosedimentary structures formed mainly due to the precipitation of carbonate minerals, although they can also incorporate siliceous, phosphate, ferric, and sulfate minerals. The minerals' precipitation occurs because of local chemical changes triggered by changes in pH and redox transformations catalyzed by the microbial energy metabolisms. Here, geochemistry, metagenomics, and bioinformatics tools reveal the key energy metabolisms of microbial mats, stromatolites and an endoevaporite distributed across four hypersaline lagoons from the Salar de Atacama. Chemoautotrophic and chemoheterotrophic microorganisms seem to coexist and influence microbialite formation. The microbialite types of each lagoon host unique microbial communities and metabolisms that influence their geochemistry. Among them, photosynthetic, carbon- and nitrogen- fixing and sulfate-reducing microorganisms appear to control the main biogeochemical cycles. Genes associated with non-conventional energy pathways identified in MAGs, such as hydrogen production/consumption, arsenic oxidation/reduction, manganese oxidation and selenium reduction, also contribute to support life in microbialites. The presence of genes encoding for enzymes associated with ureolytic processes in the Cyanobacteria phylum and Gammaproteobacteria class might induce carbonate precipitation in hypersaline environments, contributing to the microbialites formation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study characterizing metagenomically microbialites enriched in manganese and identifying metabolic pathways associated with manganese oxidation, selenium reduction, and ureolysis in this ecosystem, which suggests that the geochemistry and bioavailability of energy sources (As, Mn and Se) shapes the microbial metabolisms in the microbialites.

Unlocking the key role of bentonite fungal isolates in tellurium and selenium bioremediation and biorecovery: Implications in the safety of radioactive waste disposal

Research on eco-friendly bioremediation strategies for mitigating the environmental impact of toxic metals has gained attention in the last years. Among all promising solutions, bentonite clays, to be used as artificial barriers to isolate radioactive wastes within the deep geological repository (DGR) concept, have emerged as effective reservoir of microorganisms with remarkable bioremediation potential. The present study aims to investigate the impact of bentonite fungi in the speciation and mobility of selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te), as natural analogues 79Se and 132Te present in radioactive waste, to screen for those strains with bioremediation potential within the context of DGR. For this purpose, a multidisciplinary approach combining microbiology, biochemistry, and microscopy was performed. Notably, Aspergillus sp. 3A demonstrated a high tolerance to Te(IV) and Se(IV), as evidenced by minimal inhibitory concentrations of >16 and >32 mM, respectively, along with high tolerance indexes. The high metalloid tolerance of Aspergillus sp. 3A is mediated by its capability to reduce these mobile and toxic elements to their elemental less soluble forms [Te(0) and Se(0)], forming nanostructures of various morphologies. Advanced electron microscopy techniques revealed intracellular Te(0) manifesting as amorphous needle-like nanoparticles and extracellular Te(0) forming substantial microspheres and irregular accumulations, characterized by a trigonal crystalline phase. Similarly, Se(0) exhibited a diverse array of morphologies, including hexagonal, irregular, and needle-shaped structures, accompanied by a monoclinic crystalline phase. The formation of less mobile Te(0) and Se(0) nanostructures through novel and environmentally friendly processes by Aspergillus sp. 3A suggests it would be an excellent candidate for bioremediation in contaminated environments, such as the vicinity of deep geological repositories. It moreover holds immense potential for the recovery and synthesis of Te and Se nanostructures for use in numerous biotechnological and biomedical applications.

Genetic mechanisms for Se(VI) reduction and synthesis of trigonal 1-D nanostructures in Stenotrophomonas bentonitica: Perspectives in eco-friendly nanomaterial production and bioremediation

Selenate (Se(VI)) is one of the most soluble and toxic species of Se. Microbial Se(VI) reduction is an efficient tool for bioremediation strategies. However, this process is limited to a few microorganisms, and its molecular basis remains unknown. We present detailed Se(VI)-resistance mechanisms under 50 and 200 mM, in Stenotrophomonas bentonitica BII-R7, coupling enzymatic reduction of Se(VI) to formation of less toxic trigonal Se (t-Se). The results reveal a concentration-dependent response. Despite the lack of evidence of Se(VI)-reduction to Se(0) under 50 mM Se(VI), many genes were highly induced, indicating that Se(VI)-resistance could be based on intracellular reduction to Se(IV), mainly through molybdenum-dependent enzymes (e.g. respiratory nitrate reductase), and antioxidant activity by enzymes like glutathione peroxidase. Although exposure to 200 mM provoked a sharp drop in gene expression, a time-dependent process of reduction and formation of amorphous (a), monoclinic (m) and t-Se nanostructures was unravelled: a-Se nanospheres were initially synthesized intracellularly, which would transform into m-Se and finally into t-Se nanostructures during the following phases. This is the first work describing an intracellular Se(VI) reduction and biotransformation process to long-term stable and insoluble t-Se nanomaterials. These results expand the fundamental understanding of Se biogeochemical cycling, and the effectiveness of BII-R7 for bioremediation purposes.

Heterotrophic denitrification: An overlooked factor that contributes to nitrogen removal in n-DAMO mixed culture

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) has been recognized as a sustainable process for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and methane. The metabolisms of denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs, including Candidatus Methanoperedens and Candidatus Methylomirabilis, have been well studied. However, potential roles of heterotrophs co-existing with these anaerobic methanotrophs are generally overlooked. In this study, we pulse-fed methane and nitrate into an anaerobic laboratory sequencing batch bioreactor and enriched a mixed culture with stable nitrate removal rate (NRR) of ∼28 mg NO₃^--N L^-1 d^-1. Microbial community analysis indicates abundant heterotrophs, e.g., Arenimonas (5.3%-18.9%) and Fimbriimonadales ATM1 (6.4%), were enriched together with denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs Ca. Methanoperedens (10.8%-13.2%) and Ca. Methylomirabilis (27.4%-34.3%). The results of metagenomics and batch tests suggested that the denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs were capable of generating methane-derived intermediates (i.e., formate and acetate), which were employed by non-methanotrophic heterotrophs for denitrification and biomass growth. These findings offer new insights into the roles of heterotrophs in n-DAMO mixed culture, which may help to optimize n-DAMO process for nitrogen removal from wastewater.

Selenium Metabolism and Selenoproteins in Prokaryotes: A Bioinformatics Perspective

Selenium (Se) is an important trace element that mainly occurs in the form of selenocysteine in selected proteins. In prokaryotes, Se is also required for the synthesis of selenouridine and Se-containing cofactor. A large number of selenoprotein families have been identified in diverse prokaryotic organisms, most of which are thought to be involved in various redox reactions. In the last decade or two, computational prediction of selenoprotein genes and comparative genomics of Se metabolic pathways and selenoproteomes have arisen, providing new insights into the metabolism and function of Se and their evolutionary trends in bacteria and archaea. This review aims to offer an overview of recent advances in bioinformatics analysis of Se utilization in prokaryotes. We describe current computational strategies for the identification of selenoprotein genes and generate the most comprehensive list of prokaryotic selenoproteins reported to date. Furthermore, we highlight the latest research progress in comparative genomics and metagenomics of Se utilization in prokaryotes, which demonstrates the divergent and dynamic evolutionary patterns of different Se metabolic pathways, selenoprotein families, and selenoproteomes in sequenced organisms and environmental samples. Overall, bioinformatics analyses of Se utilization, function, and evolution may contribute to a systematic understanding of how this micronutrient is used in nature.

Sequential removal of selenate, nitrate and sulfate and recovery of elemental selenium in a multi-stage bioreactor process with redox potential feedback control

Bioreduction can facilitate oxyanions removal from wastewater. However, simultaneously removing selenate, nitrate and sulfate and recovering high-purity elemental selenium (Se⁰) from wastewater by a single system is difficult and may lead to carcinogenic selenium monosulfide (SeS) formation. To solve this issue, a two-stage biological fluidized bed (FBR) process with ethanol dosing based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) feedback control was developed in this study. FBR1 performance was first evaluated at various ORP setpoints (between -520 and -360 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) and elevated sulfate concentration. Subsequently, ethanol-fed FBR2 was used to reduce sulfate from FBR1 effluent, followed by an aerated sulfide oxidation reactor (SOR). At - 520 mV≤ ORPs≤ -480 mV, FBR1 removed 100 ± 0.1% nitrate and 99.7 ± 0.3% selenate without sulfate reduction. At ORPs ≥ -440 mV, selenate reduction was incomplete, whereas nitrate removal remained stable. Se⁰ recovery efficiency from FBR1 effluent was 37.5% with 71% Se purity. FBR2 converted 86% of the remaining sulfate in FBR1 effluent to hydrogen sulfide, but the over-oxidation of dissolved sulfide in SOR decreased the overall sulfate removal efficiency to ~46.3%. Overall, the two-stage FBR process with ORP feedback dosing of ethanol was effective for sequentially removing selenate, nitrate and sulfate and recovering Se⁰ from wastewater.

Microbial reduction and resistance to selenium: Mechanisms, applications and prospects

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans, animals and microorganisms. Microbial transformations, in particular, selenium dissimilatory reduction and bioremediation applications have received increasing attention in recent years. This review focuses on multiple Se-reducing pathways under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, and the phylogenetic clustering of selenium reducing enzymes that are involved in these processes. It is emphasized that a selenium reductase may have more than one metabolic function, meanwhile, there are several Se(VI) and/or Se(IV) reduction pathways in a bacterial strain. It is noted that Se(IV)-reducing efficiency is inconsistent with Se(IV) resistance in bacteria. Moreover, we discussed the links of selenium transformations to biogeochemical cycling of other elements, roles of Se-reducing bacteria in soil, plant and digestion system, and the possibility of using functional genes involved in Se transformation as biomarker in different environments. In addition, we point out the gaps and perspectives both on Se transformation mechanisms and applications in terms of bioremediation, Se fortification or dietary supplementation.

Crab bioturbation alters nitrogen cycling and promotes nitrous oxide emission in intertidal wetlands: Influence and microbial mechanism

Intertidal wetlands provide important ecosystem functions by acting as nitrogen (N) cycling hotspots, which can reduce anthropogenic N loading from land to coastal waters. Benthic bioturbations are thought to play an important role in mediating N cycling in intertidal marshes. However, how the burrowing activity of benthos and their microbial symbionts affect N transformation and greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission remains unclear in these environments. Here, we show that bioturbation of crabs reshaped the structure of intertidal microbial communities and their N cycling function. Molecular analyses suggested that the microbially-driven N cycling might be accelerated by crab bioturbation, as the abundances of most of the N related functional genes were higher on the burrow wall than those in the surrounding bulk sediments, except for genes involved in N fixation, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), and N₂O reduction, which were further confirmed by isotope-tracing experiments. Especially, the potential rates of the main N₂O production pathways, nitrification and denitrification, were 2-3 times higher in the burrow wall sediments. However, even higher N₂O emission rates (approximately 6 times higher) were observed in this unique microhabitat, which was due to a disproportionate increase in N₂O production over N₂O consumption driven by burrowing activity. In addition, the sources of N₂O were also significantly affected by crab bioturbation, which increased the contribution of hydroxylamine oxidation pathway. This study reveals the mechanism through which benthic bioturbations mediate N cycling and highlights the importance of considering burrowing activity when evaluating the ecological function of intertidal wetlands.

Biotic shortcut deselenization coupled to abiotic sulfide oxidation enabled pollutants co-removal and products recovery

Selenate and sulfide are both contaminants which severely pollute water bodies. Respective bioremediation of selenate- and sulfide-contaminated wastewaters requires abundant electron donors and acceptors. Here, we present a novel concept coupling biological selenate to selenite (shortcut deselenization) and chemical sulfide-driven selenite reduction, to remove multiple pollutants simultaneously. Vial tests showed that shortcut deselenization could save at least two thirds of operation time and one third of carbon source, compared to the complete deselenization to elemental selenium. Subsequent co-removal of sulfide and selenite was optimized at reaction pH of ∼10 and reactant molar ratio of ∼4. Using a newly-designed continuous flow system, >95% removal of both selenate and sulfide was achieved by coupling shortcut deselenization to sulfide oxidation. A series of characterization tools revealed that the final collected precipitates were comprised of high-purity hexagonal selenium (97.4%, wt) and inconsiderable sulfur (2.6%, wt). Superior over selenate-reducing solutions generally producing selenium mixed with reagents or microorganisms, the selenium products generated here were highly purified thus very favorable for further recovery and reuse. Overall, this proof-of-concept study provided a promising technology not only for co-removal of multiple pollutants, but also for substantial costs saving, as well as for valuable products recovery.

Comprehensive metagenomic and enzyme activity analysis reveals the negatively influential and potentially toxic mechanism of polystyrene nanoparticles on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands

The widespread use of nanoplastics inevitably leads to their increasing emission into constructed wetlands (CWs). However, little is known about the impacts of nanoplastics on nitrogen transformation in CWs. In this study, the influence of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs), one of the most widely used plastics, on the nitrogen transformation in CWs was comprehensively investigated, and the influential and toxic mechanism was evaluated through metagenomic analysis (DNA level) and key enzyme activities (protein level) related to N-transformation metabolism and antioxidant systems. The results showed that over 97% of PS NPs were retained in CWs, and the biofilm of sand was the main sink of PS NPs. Exposure to 1 and 10 mg/L PS NPs suppressed the nitrogen transformation, causing a certain degree of inhibition in TN removal, especially in the relatively short term of the exposure experiment (p < 0.05). At the protein level, 1 and 10 mg/L PS NPs negatively affect enzyme activities involved in denitrification (nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase) and electron transport system activity (ETSA). In contrast, 10 mg/L of PS NPs significantly suppressed the activities of nitrifying enzymes (ammonia monooxygenase, hydroxylamine dehydrogenase and nitrite oxidoreductase), whereas 1 mg/L PS NPs showed no impacts on nitrifying enzymes. Metagenomic analysis further certified that PS NPs restrained the relative abundances of genes involved in nitrogen transformation including nitrification and denitrification biochemical metabolisms (the electron production, electron transport and electron consumption processes). It also indicated that PS NPs could affect nitrogen transformation by reducing the abundance of genes for electron donor and ATP production involved in carbon metabolism (glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolism). In our study, the potential toxic mechanisms of PS NPs attributed to over production of reactive oxygen species and variations of antioxidant systems in macrophytes and microorganisms. These results provided valuable information for evaluating the impacts of PS NPs on CWs and arouse more attention to their impacts on the global geochemical nitrogen and carbon cycles.

Making good use of methane to remove oxidized contaminants from wastewater

Being an energetic fuel, methane is able to support microbial growth and drive the reduction of various electron acceptors. These acceptors include a broad range of oxidized contaminants (e.g., nitrate, nitrite, perchlorate, bromate, selenate, chromate, antimonate and vanadate) that are ubiquitously detected in water environments and pose threats to human and ecological health. Using methane as electron donor to biologically reduce these contaminants into nontoxic forms is a promising solution to remediate polluted water, considering that methane is a widely available and inexpensive electron donor. The understanding of methane-based biological reduction processes and the responsible microorganisms has grown in the past decade. This review summarizes the fundamentals of metabolic pathways and microorganisms mediating microbial methane oxidation. Experimental demonstrations of methane as an electron donor to remove oxidized contaminants are summarized, compared, and evaluated. Finally, the review identifies opportunities and unsolved questions that deserve future explorations for broadening understanding of methane oxidation and promoting its practical applications.

Microbial ecology in selenate-reducing biofilm communities: Rare biosphere and their interactions with abundant phylotypes

Selenate (SeO₄ ^2- ) reduction in hydrogen (H₂ )-fed membrane biofilm reactors (H₂ -MBfRs) was studied in combinations with other common electron acceptors. We employed H₂ -MBfRs with two distinctly different conditions: R1, with ample electron-donor availability and acceptors SeO₄ ^2- and sulfate (SO₄ ^2- ), and R2, with electron-donor limitation and the presence of electron acceptors SeO₄ ^2- , nitrate (NO₃ ^- ), and SO₄ ^2- . Even though H₂ was available to reduce all input SeO₄ ^2- and SO₄ ^2- in R1, SeO₄ ^2- reduction was preferred over SO₄ ^2- reduction. In R2, co-reduction of NO₃ ^- and SeO₄ ^2- occurred, and SO₄ ^2- reduction was mostly suppressed. Biofilms in all MBfRs had high microbial diversity that was influenced by the "rare biosphere" (RB), phylotypes with relative abundance less than 1%. While all MBfR biofilms had abundant members, such as Dechloromonas and Methyloversatilis, the bacterial communities were significantly different between R1 and R2. For R1, abundant genera were Methyloversatilis, Melioribacter, and Propionivibrio; for R2, abundant genera were Dechloromonas, Hydrogenophaga, Cystobacter, Methyloversatilis, and Thauera. Although changes in electron-acceptor or -donor loading altered the phylogenetic structure of the microbial communities, the biofilm communities were resilient in terms of SeO₄ ^2- and NO₃ ^- reductions, because interacting members of the RB had the capacity of respiring these electron acceptors.

Heavy metal reduction coupled to methane oxidation：Mechanisms, recent advances and future perspectives

Methane emission has contributed greatly to the global warming and climate change, and the pollution of heavy metals is an important concern due to their toxicity and environmental persistence. Recently, multiple heavy metals have been demonstrated to be electron acceptors for methane oxidation, which offers a potential for simultaneous methane emission mitigation and heavy metal detoxification. This review provides a comprehensive discussion of heavy metals reduction coupled to methane oxidation, and identifies knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research. The functional microorganisms and possible mechanisms are detailed in groups under aerobic, hypoxic and anaerobic conditions. The potential application and major environmental significances for global methane mitigation, the elements cycle and heavy metals detoxification are also discussed. The future research opportunities are also discussed to provide insights for further research and efficient practical application.

Extension of a biotic ligand model for predicting the toxicity of metalloid selenate to wheat: The effects of pH, phosphate and sulphate

It has not been well understood that the influences of pH and accompanying anions on the toxicity of selenate (Se(VI)). The influences of pH and major anions on Se(VI) toxicity to wheat root elongation were determined and modeled based on the biotic ligand model (BLM) and free ion activity model (FIAM) concepts. Results showed that EC50[Se(VI)]_T values increased from 162 to 251 μM as the pH values increased from 4.5 to 8.0, indicating that the pH increases alleviated the Se(VI) toxicity. The EC50{SeO₄^2-} values increased from 133 to 203 μM while the EC50{HSeO₄^-} values sharply decreased from 210 to 0.102 nM with the pH increasing from 4.5 to 8.0. The effect of pH on Se(VI) toxicity could be explained by the changes of Se(VI) species in different pH solutions as SeO₄^2- and HSeO₄^-were differently toxic to wheat root elongation. The toxicity of Se(VI) decreased with the increasing activities of H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2- but not for NO₃^- and Cl^- activities, indicating that only H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2- had competitive effects with Se(VI) on the binding sites. An extended BLM was developed to consider effects of pH, phosphate and sulphate, and stability constants of SeO₄^2-, HSeO₄^-, H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2- to the binding sites were obtained: log [Formula: see text]  = 3.45, log [Formula: see text]  = 5.98, log [Formula: see text]  = 2.05, log [Formula: see text]  = 1.85. Results implied that BLM performed much better than FIAM in the wheat root elongation prediction when coupling with toxic species SeO₄^2- and HSeO₄^-, and the competitions of H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2- for the binding sites while developing the Se(VI)-BLM.

Will a Non-antibiotic Metalloid Enhance the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance Genes: The Selenate Story

The rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has become an increasingly serious threat to public health. Previous studies illustrate the antibiotic-like effect of many substances. However, whether and how commonly used or existing non-antibiotic metalloids (e.g., selenate) would enhance ARG spread remains poorly known. Here, we tracked the long-term operation of a bioreactor continuously fed with selenate for more than 1000 days. Metagenomic sequencing identified 191 different ARGs, of which the total abundance increased significantly after the amendment of selenate. Network analyses showed that ARGs resisting multiple drugs had very similar co-occurrence patterns, implying a potentially larger health risk. Host classification not only indicated multidrug-resistant species but also distinguished the mechanism of ARG enrichment for vertical transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Genome reconstruction of an ARG host suggested that selenate and its bioreduction product selenite could stimulate the overproduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species, which was confirmed by the direct measurement. Bacterial membrane permeability, type IV pilus formation, and DNA repair and recombination were also enhanced, together facilitating the horizontal acquirement of ARGs. Overall, this study for the first time highlights the ARG emergence and dissemination induced by a non-antibiotic metalloid and identifies ARG as a factor to consider in selenate bioremediation.
