Inorganic carbon limitation during nitrogen conversions in sponge-bed trickling filters for mainstream treatment of anaerobic effluent

Microbiome and antibiotic resistome in bioelectrochemical toilets for onsite treatment of fecal sludge

Effective management of fecal sludge (FS) is essential for preventing environmental and public health risks. Developing safe and efficient FS treatment technology is crucial for reducing the health risks of onsite sanitation systems. In this study, bioelectrochemical toilets (BETs) were developed to treat FS onsite. Compared with the open-circuit BETs (OC-BETs), BETs exhibited higher removal efficiencies for total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Specifically, the enhancements in removal efficiencies were 18.82 ± 1.73 %, 7.28 ± 0.32 %, and 11.41 ± 0.05 % for urine, and 19.28 ± 4.08 %, 21.65 ± 1.23 %, and 24.68 ± 0.95 % for feces, respectively. Microbiome analysis indicated that the dominant populations were affiliated with electroactive bacteria (Desulfuromonas and Pseudomonas) in the electrode biofilm of BETs. The species co-occurrence network showed that the electrode biofilm microbiome in BETs had more complex correlations than that in OC-BETs, suggesting that a weak electrical current enhanced the microbiome stability. The relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in BETs and OC-BETs reduced by 59.85 ± 1.32 % and 53.01 ± 2.81 % compared with the initial FS, respectively. These findings indicate that BETs are an alternative system for enhancing onsite treatment of fecal sludge and provide a theoretical foundation for the implementation of BETs.

Inorganic carbon limitation decreases ammonium removal and N2O production in the algae-nitrifying bacteria symbiosis system

Ammonium removal by a symbiosis system of algae (Chlorella vulgaris) and nitrifying bacteria was evaluated in a long-term photo-sequencing batch reactor under varying influent inorganic carbon (IC) concentrations (15, 10, 5 and 2.5 mmol L-1) and different nitrogen loading rate (NLR) conditions (270 and 540 mg-N L-1 d-1). The IC/N ratios provided were 2.33, 1.56, 0.78 and 0.39, respectively, for an influent NH4+-N concentration of 90 mg-N L-1 (6.43 mmol L-1). The results confirmed that both ammonium removal and N2O production were positively related with IC concentration. Satisfactory ammonium removal efficiencies (>98 %) and rates (29-34 mg-N gVSS-1 h-1) were achieved regardless of NLR levels under sufficient IC of 10 and 15 mmol L-1, while insufficient IC at 2.5 mmol L-1 led to the lowest ammonium removal rates of 0 mg-N gVSS-1 h-1. The ammonia oxidation process by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) played a predominant role over the algae assimilation process in ammonium removal. Long-time IC deficiency also resulted in the decrease in biomass and pigments of algae and nitrifying bacteria. IC limitation led to the decreasing N2O production, probably due to its negative effect on ammonia oxidation by AOB. The optimal IC concentration was determined to be 10 mmol L-1 (i.e., IC/N of 1.56, alkalinity of 500 mg CaCO3 L-1) in the algae-bacteria symbiosis reactor, corresponding to higher ammonia oxidation rate of ∼41 mg-N gVSS-1 h-1 and lower N2O emission factor of 0.13 %. This suggests regulating IC concentrations to achieve high ammonium removal and low carbon emission simultaneously in the algae-bacteria symbiosis wastewater treatment process.

Methods Influence in Surface Area Result from Polyurethane Used as Support Media

We evaluated if different measurement methods influence the surface area results from a polyurethane sponge used as support media in biofilm reactors. The surface area values are normally used to characterize and present advantages from supported medias. However, the methodology to determine it is barely discussed. We compared two specific surface area methodologies: Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and analysis of images obtained by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Specific surface area by BET was 93769.1 m2 m-3 (average); for SEM methodology, 10586.6 m2 m-3. The BET value was higher than expected in reality, and the SEM method result was more suitable and used as data input in a mathematical modeling.

Biofilm reactors for the treatment of used water in space:potential, challenges, and future perspectives

Water is not only essential to sustain life on Earth, but also is a crucial resource for long-duration deep space exploration and habitation. Current systems in space rely on the resupply of water from Earth, however, as missions get longer and move farther away from Earth, resupply will no longer be a sustainable option. Thus, the development of regenerative reclamation water systems through which useable water can be recovered from "waste streams" (i.e., used waters) is sorely needed to further close the loop in space life support systems. This review presents the origin and characteristics of different used waters generated in space and discusses the intrinsic challenges of developing suitable technologies to treat such streams given the unique constrains of space exploration and habitation (e.g., different gravity conditions, size and weight limitations, compatibility with other systems, etc.). In this review, we discuss the potential use of biological systems, particularly biofilms, as possible alternatives or additions to current technologies for water reclamation and waste treatment in space. The fundamentals of biofilm reactors, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as different reactor configurations and their potential for use and challenges to be incorporated in self-sustaining and regenerative life support systems in long-duration space missions are also discussed. Furthermore, we discuss the possibility to recover value-added products (e.g., biomass, nutrients, water) from used waters and the opportunity to recycle and reuse such products as resources in other life support subsystems (e.g., habitation, waste, air, etc.).

Enhanced fixation of dissolved inorganic carbon by algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge during treatment of low-organic-content wastewater

The microalgae-based wastewater treatment technologies are believed to contribute to carbon neutrality. This study investigated the inorganic carbon fixation performance in the algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (A-BAGS) process under cultivation at different concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and inorganic carbon (IC). The results indicated that A-BAGS in treating wastewater containing organics of 77 mg-C/L contributed little to the fixation of inorganic carbon, while the highest inorganic carbon removal efficiency of 50 % was achieved at the influent IC of 100 mg/L and OC of 7 mg/L. This high IC condition contributed to enhanced biomass growth rate and enhanced extracellular polymeric substances, while it did not affect the granular stability and nitrification efficiency. The microbial diversity was also largely enhanced. The results demonstrated the great potential of A-BAGS for simultaneous resource recovery in wastewater and inorganic carbon fixation, while operation conditions need to be further optimized.

Challenges on solar oxidation as post-treatment of municipal wastewater from UASB systems: Treatment efficiency, disinfection and toxicity

The application of solar photo-Fenton as post-treatment of municipal secondary effluents (MSE) in developing tropical countries is the main topic of this review. Alternative technologies such as stabilization ponds and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) are vastly applied in these countries. However, data related to the application of solar photo-Fenton to improve the quality of effluents from UASB systems are scarce. This review gathered main achievements and limitations associated to the application of solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH and at pilot scale to analyze possible challenges associated to its application as post-treatment of MSE generated by alternative treatments. To this end, the literature review considered studies published in the last decade focusing on CECs removal, toxicity reduction and disinfection via solar photo-Fenton. Physicochemical characteristics of effluents originated after UASB systems alone and followed by a biological post-treatment show significant difference when compared with effluents from conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems. Results obtained for solar photo-Fenton as post-treatment of MSE in developed countries indicate that remaining organic matter and alkalinity present in UASB effluents may pose challenges to the performance of solar advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This drawback could result in a more toxic effluent. The use of chelating agents such as Fe³⁺-EDDS to perform solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH was compared to the application of intermittent additions of Fe²⁺ and both of these strategies were reported as effective to remove CECs from MSE. The latter strategy may be of greater interest in developing countries due to costs associated to complexing agents. In addition, more studies are needed to confirm the efficiency of solar photo-Fenton on the disinfection of effluent from UASB systems to verify reuse possibilities. Finally, future research urges to evaluate the efficiency of solar photo-Fenton at natural pH for the treatment of effluents from UASB systems.

Synergistic effect of chitosan-based sludge aggregates CS@NGS inoculum accelerated the start-up of biofilm reactor treating aquaculture effluent: Insights into performance, microbial characteristics, and functional genes

The moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) process has drawn more attention as a promising biological wastewater treatment process. Nevertheless, achieving quick start-up and microbial biofilm formation remains a significant challenge. Consequently, the present study investigated a novel chitosan-based natural sludge (CS@NGS) seeding strategy for the accelerated start-up of MBBR. Three identical bioreactors were employed; the first bioreactor was without sludge seed as the control (BR1), the second was inoculated only with sludge (BR2), and the third was inoculated with CS@NGS according to the proposed seeding method (BR3). All bioreactors were utilised to treat simulated recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) effluent. Resultantly, the CS@NGS shortened the start-up period from over twenty to seven days due to the enhanced initial microbial adhesion and biofilm formation. Under optimal conditions, the ammonium removal in BR3 approached 100%, which was relatively higher than BR2 (96.35 ± 1.12%) and BR1 (92.56 ± 2.17%). Moreover, a low nitrite accumulation was exhibited in the effluents, approximately ≤0.03 mg L^-1. The process performance correlated positively with core bacteria from the genera Nakamurella, Hyphomicrobium, Nitrospira, Paenarthrobacter, Rhodococcus, and Stenotrophobacter. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results demonstrated that the CS@NGS enhanced the expressions of amoA, nxrB, nirK, nirS, narG, and napA nitrogen metabolism-related functional genes to varying degrees. The present study findings can assist the rapid start-up of aquaculture biofilters utilised to solve high nitrite and ammonia accumulation in recirculated water from industrial RAS.

Mainstream short-cut N removal modelling: current status and perspectives

This work gives an overview of the state-of-the-art in modelling of short-cut processes for nitrogen removal in mainstream wastewater treatment and presents future perspectives for directing research efforts in line with the needs of practice. The modelling status for deammonification (i.e., anammox-based) and nitrite-shunt processes is presented with its challenges and limitations. The importance of mathematical models for considering N₂O emissions in the design and operation of short-cut nitrogen removal processes is considered as well. Modelling goals and potential benefits are presented and the needs for new and more advanced approaches are identified. Overall, this contribution presents how existing and future mathematical models can accelerate successful full-scale mainstream short-cut nitrogen removal applications.

Low strength wastewater anammox start-up by stepwise decrement in influent nitrogen: Biofilm formation mechanism and mathematical modelling

The application of mainstream anammox process is hampered by its overlong start-up and instability under disturbance. A lab-scale mainstream anammox moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was successfully started in 120 days with stepwise decrement in influent nitrogen concentration from sidestream to mainstream condition. The initial colonization by Candidatus Jettenia and filamentous fermenter Anaerolineaceae were potentially mediated by hydrophobic interaction and type IV pilus. Ca. Kuenenia with higher substrate affinity outcompeted Ca. Jettenia, and the predominant fermenters shifted to fermentative Ignavibacteriaceae in the mature biofilm. A novel mainstream anammox biofilm development (MABD) model was constructed to describe biofilm growth, population dynamics, and nitrogen removal performance. The simulation results suggested that higher inocula biomass (460-690 mgVSS·L^-1), relative abundance of low-affinity AnAOB in the inocula (e.g., Ca. Jettenia, 1.3-2%), and the early-stage solids retention time (45-68 days) were desired to form thicker biofilm and improve effluent quality during 120-day mainstream anammox MBBR start-up. The mechanistic insights into biofilm formation and predictive power of the newly developed MABD model are of importance to the design and operation of mainstream anammox processes towards more biofilm biomass and higher nitrogen removal efficiency.

Applications of Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) and Characteristics of Its Microbial Community: A Review of Bibliometric Trend and Recent Findings

The interest in research on up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors is growing. The meta-analysis of bibliometric data highlighted the growing interest in four diverse topics: (i) energy recovery production; (ii) combination with other treatments; (iii) the study of processes for the removal of specific pollutants and, (iv) characterization of microbial community and granular sludge composition. In particular, the papers published in the first 6 months of 2021 on this process were selected and critically reviewed to highlight and discuss the results, the gaps in the literature and possible ideas for future research. Although the state of research on UASB is to be considered advanced, there are still several points that will be developed in future research such as the consolidation of the results obtained on a semi-industrial or real scale, the use of real matrices instead of synthetic ones and a more in-depth study of the effect of substances such as antibiotics on the microbiota and microbiome of UASB granular biomass. To date, few and conflicting data about the environmental footprint of UASB are available and therefore other studies on this topic are strongly suggested.
