Necessity of direct energy and ammonium recovery for carbon neutral municipal wastewater reclamation in an innovative anaerobic MBR-biochar adsorption-reverse osmosis process

A soft-sensor approach for predicting an indicator virus removal efficiency of a pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR)

The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising technology for not only water reclamation but also virus removal; however, the virus removal efficiency of AnMBR has not been fully investigated. Additionally, the removal efficiency estimation requires datasets of virus concentration in influent and effluent, but its monitoring is not easy to perform for practical operation because the virus quantification process is generally time-consuming and requires specialized equipment and trained personnel. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the key, monitorable variables in AnMBR and establish the data-driven models using the selected variables to predict virus removal efficiency. We monitored operational and environmental conditions of AnMBR in Sendai, Japan and measured virus concentration once a week for six months. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that the pH values of influent and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were strongly correlated with the log reduction value of pepper mild mottle virus, indicating that electrostatic interactions played a dominant role in AnMBR virus removal. Among the candidate models, the random forest model using selected variables including influent and MLSS pH outperformed the others. This study has demonstrated the potential of AnMBR as a viable option for municipal wastewater reclamation with high microbial safety.

Biochar mediated high-rate anaerobic bioreactors: A critical review on high-strength wastewater treatment and management

Treatment of high-strength wastewater is critical for the aquatic environment and receiving water bodies around the globe. Untreated or partially treated high-strength wastewater may cause severe damage to the existing water bodies. Various high-rate anaerobic bioreactors have been developed in the last decades for treating high-strength wastewater. High-rate anaerobic bioreactors are effective in treating industrial wastewater and provide energy in the form of methane as well. However, the physical or chemical properties of high-strength industrial wastewater, sometimes, disrupt the functioning of a high-rate anaerobic bioreactor. For example, the disintegration of granular sludge in up flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor or membrane blocking in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor are the results of a high-strength wastewater treatment which hamper the proper functioning and may harm the wastewater treatment plant economically. Biochar, if added to these bioreactors, may help to alleviate the ill-functioning of high-rate anaerobic bioreactors. The primary mechanisms by biochar work in these bioreactors are direct interspecies electron transfer, microbial immobilization, or gene level alternations in microbial structure. The present article explores and reviews the recent application of biochar in a high-rate anaerobic bioreactor treating high-strength industrial wastewater.

Impacts of electric field-magnetic powder coupled membrane bioreactor on phenol wastewater treatment: Performance, synergistic mechanism, antibiotic resistance genes, and eco-environmental benefit evaluation

A novel electric field-magnetic powder coupled membrane bioreactor (EM-MBR) was constructed, which was superior on improvement of phenol treatment performance and sludge characteristics, and mitigation of membrane fouling. EM-MBR enhanced the phenol degradation via the improvement activity of phenol degrading enzymes. The EPS contents and SVI of EM-MBR were significantly reduced by 49.3 % and 58.7 % than that of the conventional MBR, respectively. Moreover, EM-MBR successfully reduced fouling rate by 57.0 %, delaying the membrane resistance. The EPS contents were positively correlated with the SVI and fouling rate, implying that the sludge settleability was strengthened by improving the properties of EPS with the assistance of electromagnetic, thus mitigating the membrane fouling. Microbial co-occurrence network demonstrated that EM-MBR enriched phenol-degrading and EPS-degrading genera correlated to Fe redox cycle. Furthermore, the activation of the antioxidant system in the EM-MBR resulted in the suppression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, consequently impeding the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Co-occurrence patterns of MGEs and ARGs revealed that intercellular binding facilitated by ist and Integrase may account for the horizontal transfer of ARGs. The reduction of unit capital costs (15.63 %), running costs (53.00 %), and total average carbon emissions (15.18 %) indicated that EM-MBR was environmentally beneficial.

Microalgal capture of carbon dioxide: A carbon sink or source?

The rapidly evolving global warming is triggering all levels of actions to reduce industrial carbon emissions, while capturing carbon dioxide of industrial origin via microalgae has attracted increasing attention. This article attempted to offer preliminary analysis on the carbon capture potential of microalgal cultivation. It was shown that the energy consumption-associated with operation and nutrient input could significantly contribute to indirect carbon emissions, making the microalgal capture of carbon dioxide much less effective. In fact, the current microalgae processes may not be environmentally sustainable and economically viable in the scenario where the carbon footprints of both upstream and downstream processing are considered. To address these challenging issues, renewable energy (e.g., solar energy) and cheap nutrient source (e.g., municipal wastewater) should be explored to cut off the indirect carbon emissions of microalgae cultivation, meanwhile produced microalgae, without further processing, should be ideally used as biofertilizer or aquafeeds for realizing complete nutrients recycling.

Critical analysis on the transformation and upgrading strategy of Chinese municipal wastewater treatment plants: Towards sustainable water remediation and zero carbon emissions

In the light of circular economy aspects, processing of large-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) needs reconsideration to limit the overuse of energy, implement of non-green technologies and emit abundant greenhouse gas. Along with the huge increase in the worldwide population and agro-industrial activities, global environmental organizations have issued several recent roles to boost scientific and industrial communities towards sustainable development. Over recent years, China has imposed national and regional standards to control and manage the discharged liquid and solid waste, as well as to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The aim of this report is to analyze the current state of Chinese WWTPs routing and related issues such as climate change and air pollution. The used strategies in Chinese WWTPs and upgrading trends were critically discussed. Several points were addressed including the performance, environmental impact, and energy demand of bio-enhanced technologies, including hydrolytic acidification pretreatment, efficient (toxic) strain treatment, and anaerobic ammonia oxidation denitrification technology, as well as advanced treatment technologies composed of physical and chemical treatment technologies, biological treatment technology and combined treatment technology. Discussion and critical analysis based on the current data and national policies were provided and employed to develop the future development trend of municipal WWTPs in China from the construction of sustainable and "Zero carbon" WWTPs.

Development, performance and microbial community analysis of a continuous-flow microalgal-bacterial biofilm photoreactor for municipal wastewater treatment

This work reported the development, performance and microbial community of microalgal-bacterial biofilms cultivated in a continuous-flow photoreactor for municipal wastewater treatment under various conditions. Results showed that microalgal-bacterial biofilms were successfully developed at a HRT of 9 h without external aeration, with a biofilm concentration of around 4690 mg/L being achieved in the steady-state. It was found that further increase of HRT to 12 h did not improve the overall accumulation of biofilm, whereas the growth of microalgae in biofilms was faster than bacteria in the initial stage, indicated by an increased chlorophyll-a&b content in biofilms. After which, the chlorophyll-a&b content in biofilms gradually stabilized at the level comparable with the seed, suggesting that there was a balanced distribution of microalgae and bacteria in biofilms. About 90% of TOC, 71.4% of total nitrogen and 72.6% of phosphorus were removed by microalgal-bacterial biofilms mainly through assimilation in the steady-state photoreactor run at the HRT of 12 h with external aeration. The community analysis further revealed that Cyanobacteria and Chloroflexi were the main components, while Chlorophyta appeared to be the dominant eukaryotic algal community in biofilms. This study could offer new insights into the development of microalgal-bacterial biofilms in a continuous-flow photoreactor for sustainable low-carbon municipal wastewater treatment.

Direct ammonium recovery from the permeate of a pilot-scale anaerobic MBR by biochar to advance low-carbon municipal wastewater reclamation and urban agriculture

The rapidly evolving global climate change has an unprecedented impact sustainable water supply, but also challenges and water shortage global food security. In such a dynamic situation, this study explored direct recovery of ammonium from the effluent of a pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating actual municipal wastewater via biochar adsorption, while the use of produced ammonium-loaded biochar for urban agriculture was also demonstrated. Results showed that modified biochar could remove almost all ammonium in the pilot AnMBR permeate at an empty bed contact time of 30 mins. Results showed that ammonium extracted from the ammonium-loaded biochar could promote the germination of Daikon radish seeds. It was further observed that the fresh weight of Pak Choi (a typical leafy vegetable) planted in the soils augmented with the ammonium-loaded biochar was 42.5 g per vegetable versus 18.5 g per vegetable in the control, indicating a 130 % of increase in the Pak Choi productivity. In addition, the Pak Choi in grown the ammonium-loaded biochar augmented soils appeared to be much bigger with larger leaves compared to the control. It was also worth to note that the ammonium-loaded biochar could significantly stimulate the root development of Pak Choi, i.e., 20.7 cm over 10.5 cm obtained in the control. More importantly, the amount of carbon emission reduced through returning ammonium-loaded biochar to urban agriculture could offset the treatment process-associated direct and indirect carbon emission.

Patterned membranes for improving hydrodynamic properties and mitigating membrane fouling in water treatment: A review

Membrane technologies have been widely applied in water treatment over the past few decades. However, membrane fouling remains a hinderance for the widespread use of membrane processes because it decreases effluent quality and increases operating costs. To mitigate membrane fouling, researchers have been exploring effective anti-fouling strategies. Recently, patterned membranes are gaining attention as a novel non-chemical membrane modification for membrane fouling control. In this paper, we review the research on patterned membranes used in water treatment over the past 20 years. In general, patterned membranes show superior anti-fouling performances, which mainly results from two aspects: hydrodynamic effects and interaction effects. Due to the introduction of diversified topographies onto the membrane surface, patterned membranes yield dramatic improvements on hydrodynamic properties, e.g., shear stress, velocity field and local turbulence, restraining concentration polarization and foulants' deposition on the membrane surface. Besides, the membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant interactions play an important role in the mitigation of membrane fouling. Due to the existence of surface patterns, the hydrodynamic boundary layer is destroyed and the interaction force as well as the contact area between foulants and surface are decreased, which contributes to the fouling suppression. However, there are still some limitations in the research and application of patterned membranes. Future research is suggested to focus on the development of patterned membranes appropriate for different water treatment scenarios, the insights into the interaction forces affected by surface patterns, and the pilot-scale and long-term studies to verify the anti-fouling performances of patterned membranes in practical applications.

Integrated membrane electrochemical reactor-membrane distillation process for enhanced landfill leachate treatment

Treatment of recalcitrant landfill leachate (LFL) induces huge energy consumption and carbon emissions due to its complex composition. Although membrane distillation (MD) exhibits good potential in LFL treatment with waste heat utilization, membrane fouling and ammonia rejection are still the major problems encountered that hinder its application. Herein, membrane electrochemical reactor (MER) was coupled with MD for simultaneous membrane fouling control and resource recovery. LFL pretreatment with membrane-less electrochemical reactor (EO) and without pretreatment were also purified by MD for comparison. Results showed that the MER-MD system rejected almost all COD_Cr, total phosphorus, metal salts, and ammonia nitrogen (increased by 33.5%-43.5% without chemical addition), and recovered 31% of ammonia nitrogen and 48% of humic acid in the raw LFL. Owing to the effective removal of hardness (61%) and organics (77%) using MER, the MER-MD system showed higher resistance to the membrane wetting and fouling, with about 61% and 14% higher final vapor flux than those of the MD and EO-MD systems, respectively, and the pure water flux could be fully recovered by alkaline solution cleaning. Moreover, SEM-EDS, ATR-FTIR and XRD characterization further demonstrated the superiority of the MD membrane fouling reversibility of the MER-MD system. Energy consumption and carbon emissions analysis showed that the MER-MD system reduced the total energy consumption/carbon emissions by ∼20% and ∼8% compared to the MD and EO-MD systems, respectively, and the ammonia nitrogen recovered by MER could offset 8.25 kg carbon dioxide equivalent. Therefore, the introduction of MER pretreatment in MD process would be an option to decrease energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions for MD treatment of LFL.

Combined modifications of CaO and liquid fraction of digestate for augmenting volatile fatty acids production from rice straw: Microbial and proteomics insights

The modification sequence of chemical (CaO) and biological (liquid fraction of digestate, LFD) for augmenting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from rice straw was investigated in this study. The coupling order of the modifiers influenced acidification performance, and simultaneous modification (CaO-LFD) was superior to other modes. The highest VFAs production was obtained in CaO-LFD, 51% higher than that in the LFD-first additional modification. The CaO-LFD demonstrated the highest selectivity of acetate production, accounting for 79% of the total VFAs. In addition, CaO-LFD modification changed the direction of the domestication of fermentative bacteria and increased populations of the key anaerobes (Atopostipes sp.) responsible for acidification. The synergistic effect of CaO and LFD was revealed, namely, the effective function of CaO in degrading recalcitrant rice straw, the promotion of transport/metabolism of carbohydrates and acetogenesis by LFD.

Resource recovery from municipal wastewater: A critical paradigm shift in the post era of activated sludge

The conventional activated sludge (CAS) process as one of the greatest engineering marvels has made irreplaceable contributions towards the human development in the past one hundred years. However, the underlying principle of CAS which is primarily based on biological oxidation has been challenged by accelerating global climate change. In such a situation, a fundamental question that urgently needs to be answered is what wastewater treatment technology would be in the post era of activated sludge? Thus, this article illustrates the necessity of a technology paradigm shift from the current linear economy to circular economy with the energy and resource recovery from municipal wastewater being a major driver. It is argued that ammonium recovery should be considered towards the sustainable municipal wastewater reclamation. Meanwhile, the potential novel processes with enhanced energy and resource recovery are also discussed, which may offer useful insights into the ways to achieve the carbon-neutral municipal wastewater reclamation.

Performance enhancement, membrane fouling mitigation and eco-friendly strategy by electric field coupled membrane bioreactor for treating mariculture wastewater

An eco-friendly strategy for mariculture wastewater treatment using an electric field attached membrane bioreactor (E-MBR) was evaluated and compared with a conventional membrane bioreactor (C-MBR). The removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) increased significantly and the membrane fouling rate reduced by 44.8% in the E-MBR. The underlying mechanisms included the enriched nitrifiers and denitrifiers, the enhanced salinity-resistance, the increased activities and upregulated genes of key enzymes involved in nitrification and denitrification for improving the performance of mariculture wastewater treatment, and the enriched extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)-degrading genera, the downregulated EPS biosynthesis genes, the repressed biofilm-forming bacteria, the enhanced zeta potential absolute value and the generated H₂O₂ for membrane fouling mitigation by electrical stimulation. Compared with the C-MBR, the energy consumption, carbon emissions, and nitrogen footprint were reduced. These findings provide novel insights into mariculture wastewater treatment using an applied electric field.

Recovery of Clean Water and Ammonia from Domestic Wastewater: Impacts on Embodied Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Treatment of domestic wastewater can recover valuable resources, including clean water, energy, and ammonia. Important metrics for these systems are greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and embodied energy, both of which are location- and technology-dependent. Here, we determine the embodied energy and GHG emissions resulting from a conventional process train, and we compare them to a nonconventional process train. The conventional train assumes freshwater conveyance from a pristine source that requires energy for pumping (US average of 0.29 kWh/m³), aerobic secondary treatment with N removal as N₂, and Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia. Overall, we find that this process train has an embodied energy of 1.02 kWh/m³ and a GHG emission of 0.77 kg-CO₂eq/m³. We compare these metrics to those of a nonconventional process train that features anaerobic secondary treatment technology followed by further purification of the effluent by reverse osmosis and air stripping for ammonia recovery. This "short-cut" process train reduces embodied energy to 0.88 kWh/m³ and GHG emissions to 0.42 kg-CO₂eq/m³, while offsetting demand for ammonia from the Haber-Bosch process and decreasing reliance upon water transported over long distances. Finally, to assess the potential impacts of nonconventional nitrogen removal technology, we compared the embodied energy and GHG emissions resulting from partial nitritation/anammox coupled to anaerobic secondary treatment. The resulting process train enabled a lower embodied energy but increased GHG emissions, largely due to emissions of N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for municipal wastewater treatment: From concept to practice

Recently, increasing interest has been placed in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in the journey towards the energy and carbon neutrality of municipal wastewater treatment. Different from aerobic granular sludge, the performance of MBGS is mainly determined by the mutualism and symbiosis between coexisting microalgae and bacteria. It appears from the literature that most of studies on MBGS were conducted at small benchtop scales under controlled conditions with synthetic wastewater. Therefore, this article attempts to look into the major engineering gaps between the knowledge generated from numerous laboratory research works and the large-scale application of MBGS, including massive production of MBGS, type of bioreactor, effect of alternate photo and dark metabolisms on effluent quality, resource recovery from waste MBGS, etc. It is clearly demonstrated that MBGS is still at its infant stage, and more effort is strongly needed to identify the technological bottlenecks of full-scale applications, while providing corresponding engineering solutions.
