Activation of persulfate by humic substances: Stoichiometry and changes in the optical properties of the humic substances

Simultaneous remediation of arsenic and organic chemicals contaminated soil and groundwater using chemical oxidation and precipitation/stabilization: a case study

After the departure of industrial facilities, reuse of the land in developed cities in China is problematic, due to the land contamination issues. The rapid remediation of sites with complex contamination is crucial and urgently needed. Herein, the case of on-site remediation of arsenic (As) in soil, as well as benzo(a)pyrene, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and As in groundwater was reported. For contaminated soil, the oxidant and deactivator (consisting of 20% sodium persulfate, 40% ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), and 40% portland cement) were applied to oxidize and immobilize As. As a result, the total amount and lixivium concentration of As were constrained under 20 mg/kg and 0.01 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, for contaminated groundwater, As and organic contaminants were treated by FeSO4/ozone and FeSO4/hydrogen peroxide with mass ratios of 1:5 and 1:8, respectively. The continuous monitoring of contaminants in 22 monitoring wells shown that all contaminants in groundwater were treated to meet the standards. In addition, the risk of secondary pollution and operation cost was effectively reduced by proper disposal and resourceful utilization. The findings indicated that the method of oxidation and precipitation/stabilization is technically, environmentally, and economically feasible for the remediation of contaminated sites with similar complex pollutants.

Trade-off effect of dissolved organic matter on degradation and transformation of micropollutants: A review in water decontamination

The degradation of micropollutants by various treatments is commonly affected by the ubiquitous dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water environment. To optimize the operating conditions and decomposition efficiency, it is necessary to consider the impacts of DOM. DOM exhibits varied behaviors in diverse treatments, including permanganate oxidation, solar/ultraviolet photolysis, advanced oxidation processes, advanced reduction process, and enzyme biological treatments. Besides, the different sources (i.e., terrestrial and aquatic, etc) of DOM, and operational circumstances (i.e., concentration and pH) fluctuate different transformation efficiency of micropollutants in water. However, so far, systematic explanations and summaries of relevant research and mechanism are rare. This paper reviewed the "trade-off" performances and the corresponding mechanisms of DOM in the elimination of micropollutants, and summarized the similarities and differences for the dual roles of DOM in each of the aforementioned treatments. Inhibition mechanisms typically include radical scavenging, UV attenuation, competition effect, enzyme inactivation, reaction between DOM and micropollutants, and intermediates reduction. Facilitation mechanisms include the generation of reactive species, complexation/stabilization, cross-coupling with pollutants, and electron shuttle. Moreover, electron-drawing groups (i.e., quinones, ketones functional groups) and electron-supplying groups (i.e., phenols) in the DOM are the main contributors to its trade-off effect.

Preferential Destruction of Micropollutants in Water through a Self-Purification Process with Dissolved Organic Carbon Polar Complexation

Removing micropollutants in real water is a scientific challenge due to primary dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and high energy consumption of current technologies. Herein, we develop a self-purification process for the preferential destruction of various micropollutants in municipal wastewater, raw drinking water, and ultrapure water with humic acid (HA) driven by the surface microelectronic field of Fe⁰-Fe_yC_z/Fe_x-GZIF-8-rGO without any additional input. It was verified that a strongly polar complex consisting of an electron-rich HA/DOC area and an electron-poor micropollutant area was formed between HA/DOC and micropollutants, promoting more electrons of micropollutants in the adsorbed complex to delocalizing to electron-rich Fe species area and be trapped by O₂, which resulted in their surface cleavage and hydrolyzation preferentially. The higher micropollutant degradation efficiency observed in real wastewaters was due to the greater complex polarity of DOC. Moreover, the electron transfer process ensured the stability of the surface microelectronic field and continuous water purification. Our findings provide a new insight into low-energy combined-micropollution water treatment.
