Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Chiari malformations present heterogeneous entities, raising many questions regarding their natural history, pathophysiology, treatment options, and prognosis. Bibliometric analyses have emerged as a method to assess the impact of articles in current clinical practice. METHODS The most cited articles were identified via Scopus Library by using the keywords "Chiari," "Arnold-Chiari," and "Chiari malformation." The 100 most cited articles were then assembled and analyzed in detail. RESULTS The top 100 articles yielded a mean of 155,28 citations per article, ranging from 87 to 896 citations, and from 1.63 to 38.96 per year. Years of publications ranged from 1950 to 2015. Oakes was the most cited author (n = 7), followed by Tubbs and Milhorat. The country with the highest cited articles was the United States (n = 63), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 6), Italy (n = 5), Spain (n = 5), Japan (n = 4), and Germany (n = 3). Neurosurgery is the journal with the most highly cited articles (n = 21), followed by Journal of Neurosurgery (n = 19). Most articles focused on Chiari malformation type I (n = 83). The topic discussed most often was imaging (n = 63), followed by the evaluation of treatment outcome (n = 58), clinical signs and symptoms (n = 57), and the role of surgery (n = 56). CONCLUSIONS The present bibliometric analysis provides a succinct appraisal of the most cited articles concerning Chiari malformation, allowing a deeper insight in this area and its main influential articles with their impact on current clinical practice and future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The accelerated growth of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery has led to an abundance of highly cited works that have helped shape the field into its current state. Highlighting these works can serve as a guide for trainees and facilitate evidence-based clinical decision making and operative techniques. METHODS Elsevier's Scopus database was used to generate a list of the 100 most cited articles on endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery in September 2022. Results were categorized based on pathology, approach, study design, and study objective. A citation per year analysis was conducted to highlight later publications that may not have had the time to accumulate as many citations as older publications. RESULTS The average number of citations for the 100 most cited articles was 210 per article (range 104-1285). Publication dates ranged from 1997 to 2019, with the highest number of articles among the 100 most cited being published in 2008 (15 articles). The journal with the greatest number of publications was Neurosurgery (30 articles). Of the 100 most cited articles, 77 were published between 2000 and 2010. Moreover, 40 of the 100 articles reported surgical outcomes and related complications, and the most common pathology was pituitary adenoma (25 articles). CONCLUSIONS This article provides a list of highly influential articles in the field of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery, highlighting its rapid evolution over the last 3 decades and demonstrating its leap from small descriptive series confined to certain pathologies to larger cohorts exploring possible boundaries and other pathologies.

Abstract
Bibliometrics and citation analysis are popular forms of analyzing medical literature based on article impact as determined by the number of citations an article has received from other publications. Many bibliometric studies published within the past 10 years have assembled lists of highly cited papers, top 100 papers, or citation classics of specialties, subspecialties, and specific morbidities. For pediatric epilepsy, there is only 1 study that bibliometrically examines articles in this subspecialty. Although bibliometrics generally examines trends in the literature, we used bibliometrics as a methodology for determining a core set of pediatric epilepsy articles with the highest impact (ie, citation count) that could be used as an introductory reading list for residents, fellows, and early career epileptologists. Therefore, we searched Web of Science to identify the 100 top-cited pediatric epilepsy articles and develop 10 topic areas into which we sorted each article. These recommended articles could be used as essential readings for pediatric epilepsy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Scientometrics is a subfield of bibliometrics that statistically analyzes publications trends. The aim of this initial study was to investigate trends in the 6 major neurosurgical journals from the last 10 years. METHODS We searched Web of Science and Scopus for articles published in Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, Operative Neurosurgery, and World Neurosurgery from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2020. Statistically analyzed parameters included national and continental distribution of articles, population density, density of neurosurgeons per 100,000 inhabitants, national per capita GDP, and national literacy rates. Bibliometric parameters assessed included total number of articles, H-indices, absolute/average number of citations per article, and article types. RESULTS A total of 39,239 articles were published in the 6 journals. Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery had the strongest source impact. The most productive year was 2019 with 6811 published articles. Corresponding authors from the USA, China, Japan, Western Europe, and Turkey were the most productive. Articles published by authors from the USA received the majority of citations. Publication numbers increased in proportion with increases in country population, literacy rate, per capita GDP, and neurosurgeon density. The highest number of articles were published in 2016, and the fewest were published in 2020. CONCLUSIONS Geographic trends in the diversity of neurosurgical publications sustained its steady increase in most developed counties. Simultaneously, the publication gap between developed and developing countries has remained stagnant.

Abstract
Background Bibliometric analyses allow detecting citation trends within a field, including assessments of the most cited journals, countries, institutions, topics, types of study, and authors. Objective The aim of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited papers within infectious meningitis research. Materials and Methods The 100 most cited publications and their data were retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science during 2019. Results The New England Journal of Medicine had the greatest number of articles (27) and citations (12,266) in the top 100. Articles were mainly published after the late 1980s. Bacteria were the most discussed agents (72 articles and 26,362 citations), but Cryptococcus sp represented the most-discussed single agent (16 articles and 6,617 citations). Primary research represented 70 articles and 25,754 citations. Among them, the most discussed topic was Clinical Features and Diagnosis/Outcomes (22 articles and 8,325 citations). Among the 27 secondary research articles, the most common type of study was Narrative Review (18 articles and 5,685 citations). The United States was the country with the greatest number of articles (56) and citations (21,388). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Yale University had the greatest number of articles (six each), being CDC the most cited (3,559). Conclusions The most cited articles within meningitis research are primary research studies, more frequently published in high IF journals and by North American institutions. Bacterial meningitis comprises the majority of publications. The articles were mainly published after the AIDS pandemic and after the implementation of the main vaccines for meningitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the last 20 yr, the rate of neurosurgical guideline publication has increased. However, despite the higher volume and increasing emphasis on quality there remains no reliable means of measuring the overall impact of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). OBJECTIVE To utilize citation analysis to evaluate the dispersion of neurosurgical CPGs. METHODS A list of neurosurgical guidelines was compiled by performing electronic searches using the Scopus (Elsevier, Amsterdam, Netherlands) and National Guideline Clearinghouse databases. The Scopus database was queried to obtain current publication and citation data for all included documents and categorized based upon recognized neurosurgical specialties. The h-index, R-index, h2-index, i10-index, and dissemination index (D-Index) were manually calculated for each subspecialty. RESULTS After applying screening criteria the search yielded 372 neurosurgical CPGs, which were included for bibliometric analysis. The overall calculated h-index for neurosurgery was 56. When broken down by subspecialty trauma/critical care had the highest value at 35, followed by spine and peripheral nerve at 30, cerebrovascular at 28, tumor at 16, pediatrics at 14, miscellaneous at 11, and functional/stereotactic/pain at 6. Cerebrovascular neurosurgery was noted to have the highest D-Index at 3.4. CONCLUSION A comprehensive framework is useful for guideline impact analysis. Bibliometric data provides a novel and adequate means of evaluating the successful dissemination of neurosurgical guidelines. There remains a paucity of data regarding implementation and clinical outcomes of individual guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A vast amount of articles centered on brain metastases have been published. OBJECTIVE To present the 100 most-cited articles dedicated to brain metastasis and to accomplish a broad literature review. METHODS In December 2019, we performed a title-focused search using the Thomson Reuters Web of Science database to identify the most cited articles centered on brain metastatic disease. Our search query term was based on using the following algorithm: "brain metastases" OR "brain metastasis" OR "brain metastatic disease" OR "cerebral metastases" OR "cerebral metastasis" OR "cerebral metastatic disease." Afterward, we reviewed the results to certify that they were relevant to the purposes of our research protocol. The 100 most cited papers were chosen and further analyzed. RESULTS Our search resulted in 11,579 articles, published from 1975 until the completion of our survey. The most cited article, by Patchell et al., was published in 1990, with 1862 citations, and an average of 62.07 citations per year, whereas the last in our list, by Gaspar et al., was published in 2010, with 195 total citations, and an average of 19.50 citations per year. Countries with the highest-cited articles included the United States (75 records), followed by Canada (16 records). CONCLUSIONS We discovered the top 100 most-cited articles centered on brain metastasis, all of which show a potentially increased level of interest, because they are meaningful scientific reports. In addition, we reviewed the historical development and advances in brain metastasis research and relevant points of interest, alongside the relevant contributions of different authors, fields of special interest, and countries. Many of the most cited articles were written by authors whose specialty was not neurosurgery or by neurosurgeons who were supported by colleagues from other medical fields. As a consequence, many of these articles were not published in neurosurgery-dedicated journals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atlantoaxial spine surgery is a challenge to spinal surgeons because of its proximity to neurovascular structures. This study aimed to identify and analyze the scientific publications in atlantoaxial spine surgery from different countries and institutions. METHODS Clarivate Analytics Web of Science was used to search all articles for information on atlantoaxial spine surgery. The annual research, countries, journals, authors, institutions, citation frequency, and journal metrics were extracted. These results from countries and hotspots (keywords in publications) were subjected to co-occurrence analysis using VOSviewer, after which the top 100 most-cited articles were analyzed further. RESULTS A total of 3161 articles were included. A trend toward an increasing number of publications on atlantoaxial spine surgery in recent years was evident. Among all countries, the United States contributed the most publications. Seth Gordhandas Sundarda Medical College had the highest number of publications among institutions. Among all research categories, fixation and fusion were the most common areas discussed. The screw-rod system described in the most-cited article (cited 823 times) appeared to be the most popular fixation method. With the development of C1 and C2 screw technology, the screw-rod system is becoming increasingly popular. CONCLUSIONS The atlantoaxial spine surgery literature has grown continuously in recent years. The United States is the largest contributor in this field. Fixation and fusion are the most common areas, and fixation-related studies should be closely followed. The screw-rod fixation system is becoming increasingly popular.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyze the publication output of postgraduate pediatric neurosurgery fellows for a 10-year period as well as identify 25 individual highly productive pediatric neurosurgeons. The correlation between academic productivity and the site of fellowship training was studied. METHODS Programs certified by the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships that had 5 or more graduating fellows from 2006 to 2015 were included for analysis. Fellows were queried using Scopus for publications during those 10 years with citation data through 2017. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated, comparing program rankings of faculty against fellows using the revised Hirsch index (r-index; primary) and Hirsch index (h-index; secondary). A list of 25 highly accomplished individual academicians and their fellowship training locations was compiled. RESULTS Sixteen programs qualified with 152 fellows from 2006 to 2015; 136 of these surgeons published a total of 2009 articles with 23,735 citations. Most publications were pediatric-specific (66.7%) clinical articles (93.1%), with middle authorship (55%). Co-investigators were more likely from residency than fellowship. There was a clustering of the top 7 programs each having total publications of around 120 or greater, publications per fellow greater than 12, more than 1200 citations, and adjusted ir10 (revised 10-year institutional h-index) and ih10 (10-year institutional h-index) values of approximately 2 or higher. Correlating faculty and fellowship program rankings yielded correlation coefficients ranging from 0.53 to 0.80. Fifteen individuals (60%) in the top 25 (by r5 index) list completed their fellowship at 1 of these 7 institutions. CONCLUSIONS Approximately 90% of fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons have 1 or more publications, but the spectrum of output is broad. There is a strong correlation between where surgeons complete their fellowships and postgraduate publications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to identify the 100 most-cited research reports on craniopharyngiomas. METHODS The Thomson Reuters Web of Science service was queried for the years 1900 to 2017 without language restrictions. The articles were sorted in descending order of the number of times they had been cited by other studies, and all titles and abstracts were screened to identify the research areas of the top 100 reports. The number of citations per year was calculated. RESULTS We identified the 100 most-cited articles on craniopharyngioma, which, collectively, had been cited 20,994 times at the time of our report. The top cited report had been cited 718 times, with an average of 144 citations annually since publication. The oldest article had been published in 1969 and the most recent in 2013; the most prolific decade was the 2000s, with 38 of the included articles published during that period. Thirty-two unique journals contributed to the 100 articles, with the Journal of Neurosurgery contributing most of the articles (n = 31). The most common country of article origin was the United States (n = 49), followed by United Kingdom (n = 12), Germany (n = 10), and Italy (n = 6). CONCLUSIONS The present study identified the 100 most-cited research articles in craniopharyngioma. These results highlight the multidisciplinary and multimodal nature of craniopharyngioma management. Recognition of important historical contributions to this field could guide future investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acoustic neuroma is the most common extra-axial primary cerebellopontine angle tumor in adults. A plethora of studies have been published on acoustic neuroma, but none of the previous works have highlighted the most influential articles. Our objective was to perform a bibliometric analysis of the 50 most-cited articles on acoustic neuroma. METHODS We performed a title-specific search on the Scopus database using the following search terms: "acoustic neuroma," "vestibular schwannoma," and "cerebellopontine angle." We recorded the 50 most-cited articles and reviewed them. RESULTS The 50 most-cited articles had an average of 175 citations per article. All articles were published between 1980 and 2006, with 1997 the most prolific year, when 7 articles were published. The journals Neurosurgery and Laryngoscope published 10 and 8 of these articles, respectively. The most common study categories were nonsurgical management (17/50) and surgical management (13/50). Studies were predominantly published by otolaryngologists (22/50) and neurosurgeons (14/50). Douglas Kondziolka was the author with the highest number of contributions, with 7 publications. The majority of the articles were produced in the United States (64%). CONCLUSIONS Identifying articles on acoustic neuroma with the most impact provides an important overview of the historical development of treatment methods and publication trends related to this condition. A finalized, comprehensive list of the most important works represents an excellent tool that can serve as a guide for evidence-based clinical practice.

The Top 100 Articles in the Medical Informatics: a Bibliometric Analysis. J Med Syst 2017; 41:150. Abstract
The number of citations that a research paper receives can be used as a measure of its scientific impact. The objective of this study was to identify and to examine the characteristics of top 100 cited articles in the field of Medical Informatics based on data acquired from the Thomson Reuters' Web of Science (WOS) in October, 2016. The data was collected using two procedures: first we included articles published in the 24 journals listed in the "Medical Informatics" category; second, we retrieved articles using the key words: "informatics", "medical informatics", "biomedical informatics", "clinical informatics" and "health informatics". After removing duplicate records, articles were ranked by the number of citations they received. When the 100 top cited articles had been identified, we collected the following information for each record: all WOS database citations, year of publication, journal, author names, authors' affiliation, country of origin and topics indexed for each record. Citations for the top 100 articles ranged from 346 to 7875, and citations per year ranged from 11.12 to 525. The majority of articles were published in the 2000s (n=43) and 1990s (n=38). Articles were published across 10 journals, most commonly Statistics in medicine (n=71) and Medical decision making (n=28). The articles had an average of 2.47 authors. Statistics and biostatistics modeling was the most common topic (n=71), followed by artificial intelligence (n=12), and medical errors (n=3), other topics included data mining, diagnosis, bioinformatics, information retrieval, and medical imaging. Our bibliometric analysis illustrated a historical perspective on the progress of scientific research on Medical Informatics. Moreover, the findings of the current study provide an insight on the frequency of citations for top cited articles published in Medical Informatics as well as quality of the works, journals, and the trends steering Medical Informatics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an abundance of articles published on meningioma. OBJECTIVE To identify the 100 most-cited articles on meningioma and to perform a bibliometric analysis. METHODS In November 2016, we performed a title-specific search of the Scopus database using "meningioma" as our search query term without publication date restrictions. The top 100 most cited articles were obtained and reviewed. RESULTS The top 100 most cited articles received a mean 198 citations per paper. Publication dates ranged from 1953 to 2013; most articles were published between 1994 and 2003, with 50 articles published during that period. NEUROSURGERY published the greatest number of top cited articles (22 of 100). The most frequent study categories were laboratorial studies (31 of 100) and natural history studies (28 of 100). Nonoperative management studies were twice as common as operative management studies in the top-cited articles. Neurosurgery as a specialty contributed to 50% of the top 100 list. The most contributing institute was the Mayo Clinic (11%); the majority of the top cited articles originated in the United States (53%). CONCLUSIONS We identified the top 100 most-cited articles on meningioma that may be considered significant and impactful works, as well as the most noteworthy. In addition, we recognized the historical development and advances in meningioma research and the important contributions of various authors, specialty fields, and countries. A large proportion of the most cited articles were written by authors other than neurosurgeons, and many of these articles were published in non-neurosurgery journals.
