Abstract
PURPOSE Bibliometric analyses have gained popularity for studying scientific literature, but their application to evaluate technological literature (patents) remains unexplored. We conducted a bibliometric analysis on the top 100 most-cited patents in scoliosis surgery. METHODS Multiple databases were queried using The Lens to identify the top 100 scoliosis surgery patents, which were selected based on forward patent citations. These patents were then categorized into 8 groups based on technological descriptors and assessed based on various factors including earliest priority date, year issued, and expiration status. RESULTS The top 100 most-cited patents included technology underlying anterolateral tethering and distraction systems (n = 11), posterior tethering and distraction systems (n = 23), posterior segmental bone anchor and rod engagement systems (n = 29), interbody devices (n = 10), biological and electrophysiological agents for scoliosis treatment and/or improved arthrodesis (n = 8), intraoperative arthroplasty devices (n = 5), orthotic devices (n = 12), and implantable devices for non-invasive, postoperative alterations of skeletal alignment (n = 2). Seventy-five patents were expired, 21 are still active, and 4 were listed as inactive. The late 1970s and early 2000s saw increased numbers of patent filings. Demonstrated trends showed no meaningful correlation between patent rank and earliest priority date (linear trendline y = 0.2648x - 477.27; R2 = 0.0114), while a very strong correlation was found between patent rank and citations per year (power trendline y = 118.82x--0.83; R2 = 0.8983). CONCLUSION Patent bibliometric analyses in the field of spinal deformity surgery provide a means to assess past advancements, better understand what it takes to make a difference in the field, and to potentially facilitate the development of innovative technologies in the future. The method described is a reliable and reproducible technique for evaluating technological literature in our field. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the bibliometric characteristics of scientific articles on systematic reviews of neurosurgery worldwide. METHODS Bibliographic searches were performed in journals indexed by the Web of Science database until 2022, with no language restrictions. A total of 771 articles were ultimately included on the basis of predefined inclusion criteria, which were manually reviewed. The bibliometric analysis involved the use of quantitative bibliometric indicators and network analysis, which were performed using the bibliometrix package in R and VOSviewer, respectively. RESULTS The first publication was in 2002, and the number of publications increased over time, with the largest number of publications in 2021 (156 articles). The average number of citations per document was 17.36, and the annual growth rate was 6.82%. Nathan A. Shlobin was the author with the most published articles (19 articles). The most cited study was published by Jobst BC (2015). WORLD NEUROSURGERY was the journal with the most publications (51 articles). The country of corresponding authors with the most publications and the greatest number of total citations was the United States. The affiliations with the most articles were University of Toronto (67 articles) and Harvard Medical School (54 articles). CONCLUSIONS The increasing trend during the past 20 years, and especially in the past 2 years, highlights the advancements in various subspecialities in the field. Our analysis revealed that North American and Western European countries are at the forefront of the field. There is a poor output of publications, authors, and affiliations in Latin-American and African countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Chiari malformations present heterogeneous entities, raising many questions regarding their natural history, pathophysiology, treatment options, and prognosis. Bibliometric analyses have emerged as a method to assess the impact of articles in current clinical practice. METHODS The most cited articles were identified via Scopus Library by using the keywords "Chiari," "Arnold-Chiari," and "Chiari malformation." The 100 most cited articles were then assembled and analyzed in detail. RESULTS The top 100 articles yielded a mean of 155,28 citations per article, ranging from 87 to 896 citations, and from 1.63 to 38.96 per year. Years of publications ranged from 1950 to 2015. Oakes was the most cited author (n = 7), followed by Tubbs and Milhorat. The country with the highest cited articles was the United States (n = 63), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 6), Italy (n = 5), Spain (n = 5), Japan (n = 4), and Germany (n = 3). Neurosurgery is the journal with the most highly cited articles (n = 21), followed by Journal of Neurosurgery (n = 19). Most articles focused on Chiari malformation type I (n = 83). The topic discussed most often was imaging (n = 63), followed by the evaluation of treatment outcome (n = 58), clinical signs and symptoms (n = 57), and the role of surgery (n = 56). CONCLUSIONS The present bibliometric analysis provides a succinct appraisal of the most cited articles concerning Chiari malformation, allowing a deeper insight in this area and its main influential articles with their impact on current clinical practice and future research.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to bibliometrically analyze the 100 most-cited articles published in the Veterinary Ophthalmology (VO) journal. METHODS Web of Science was searched for citations of VO articles published in 1998-2022. Tissue and species studied, and first and last author domicile and affiliation were recorded for the 100 most-cited articles and descriptively analyzed. RESULTS Altogether, the 100 most-cited VO articles have cited a total of 5483 times. Most commonly, these were devoted to the cornea (23%), multiple tissues (19%), and glaucoma (16%). Studies on dogs (36%), horses (17%), and multiple species (15%) were most often cited. Most first/last authors were from the USA (n = 113), Brazil (n = 13), and France and Germany (n = 7 each), and most frequently affiliated with the University of Florida (n = 36), University of Wisconsin-Madison (n = 15), and Animal Health Trust, North Carolina State University, and Ohio State University (n = 6 each). KN Gelatt (n = 9), DE Brooks (n = 6), and FJ Ollivier and EO MacKay (n = 5 each) were the most frequent first or last authors. The greatest number of citations was for articles with KN Gelatt (n = 555), FJ Ollivier (n = 411), and DE Brooks (n = 372) as first or last authors. "The comparative morphology of the tapetum lucidum" by FJ Ollivier et al. (2002) is the most frequently cited article in VO history (n = 178). CONCLUSIONS This study provides insight into the impact of publishing in VO and a more comprehensive understanding of trends and the most influential contributions to VO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bibliometric analyses of the scientific literature have grown increasingly popular in the past few decades. However, patent bibliometric studies, evaluation of technological literature, have not yet been applied in neurosurgery. OBJECTIVE To perform a pilot patent bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited patents in cranial neurosurgery. METHODS The Lens was used to query multiple databases, to select the top 100 cranial neurosurgical patents based upon forward patent citations. These were organized into 9 categories based on technological descriptors and were evaluated based on the earliest priority date, year issued, and expiration status, among others. RESULTS The top 100 most cited patents included technology underlying 3D navigation (n = 31), pharmacology and implants (n = 20), vascular occlusion (n = 5), craniotomy closure (n = 9), focal lesioning and tissue resection (n = 8), brain and systemic cooling (n = 5), neuroendoscopy (n = 8), neuromonitoring and stimulation (6), and technologies improving surgeon performance (n = 8). Ninety-six patents were filed in the United States, 72 were expired, 19 are still active, and 9 were listed as inactive. The highest number of patents was applied for from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. Demonstrated trends showed no meaningful correlation between patent rank and earliest priority date (linear trendline y = 0.7107 x -1367.5; R2 = 0.0671), while a very strong correlation was found between patent rank and citations per year (power trendline y = 127.93 x -1.094; R2 = 0.8579). CONCLUSIONS Patent bibliometrics allow evaluation of neurosurgical advancements from the past and enable subsequent development of cutting-edge technology in the future. The described method is a reproducible and reliable technique for evaluating our field's patent literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Exosomes, or small extracellular vesicles with signaling properties, have recently been identified as novel mechanisms for stroke treatment. This study aims to use bibliometric techniques to identify current research trends and future directions of exosome-based stroke therapy. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection was searched using terms that included "exosome" and all stroke types. Bibliometric data, including authors, publication years, citations, countries/regions, institutions, journals, and Keywords Plus, were extracted directly from the Web of Science Core Collection. Keywords were mapped using VOSviewer. RESULTS From 2010 to 2021, 424 documents were identified with a total of 12,708 citations. The number of publications increased yearly from 2012 to 2021, the majority of which were research and review articles. China and the United States produced the most publications with Henry Ford Hospital and Oakland University serving as the 2 most highly published research institutions. Documents were published most frequently in the journal Stroke. Keywords Plus analyses revealed 3 main research areas: exosomes as pathogenic mediators, biomarkers, and treatments of stroke. Ischemic stroke was the most prevalent type of stroke included in these studies. CONCLUSIONS Using bibliometric techniques, this study identified a current and growing interest in the research of exosomes in stroke, particularly in their pathogenic, biomarker, and potential minimally invasive therapeutic properties. Given the high prevalence of ischemic stroke in the current literature, further characterization of exosomes in other stroke types, such as intracerebral hemorrhage, emerges as a future direction for this field of research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Determine the bibliometric characteristics of scientific articles that address the subject of neurosurgery in Latin America and the Caribbean. METHODS A bibliographic search of original articles published in the Web of Science database up to 2021 was performed, without language restrictions. The terms included in the search strategy were Neurosurgery, neurosurgical procedures, and neurological surgical procedure. Articles according to the inclusion criteria in the Rayyan application were included. Subsequently, a quantitative bibliometric analysis was carried out with the bibliometrix package in R and VOSviewer. RESULTS We identified 882 articles published in 271 journals. The first publication was in 2006, the highest number of publications was in 2021, the annual percentage growth rate was 25.9, and the average number of citations per document was 11.2. The author with the highest number of publications was Teixeira MJ (41 articles), and the University of Sao Paulo had the highest number of articles on this topic. WORLD NEUROSURGERY was the journal with the most publications (120 articles), and the study by Carney et al (2017) was the most cited (1175 citations). The country of corresponding authors with the most publications and the greatest number of total citations was Brazil. Surgery, and Management were the most used keywords plus; however, in the most recent articles Simulation and Guidelines were used. CONCLUSIONS In the past decade, there has been an increase in articles on neurosurgery in Latin America and the Caribbean. Scientific production in neurosurgery must continue to increase in order to promote evidence-based medicine.

Abstract
The study of Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is progressing rapidly. This study aimed to identify historical trends in publications focusing on NF1, to find the top 100 most cited publications on this topic, and to evaluate their level of evidence. This study identifies historical trends in publication regarding NF1 with the aim of providing readers useful information about the areas of research being performed, an educational guide to facilitate novice researchers in conducting effective evidence-based medical research, and unique insight into developments and trends of NF 1 research. This study also evaluates the evidence of highly cited papers on NF1. A search of all databases and journals accessible within Elsevier's Scopus was performed on June 27th, 2020, using combinations of the Boolean queries "Neurofibromatosis 1," "Von Recklinghausen," and "NF1," which yielded 13,599 documents. The top 100 most-cited papers were identified, analyzed, and evaluated for level of evidence. Evidence was assessed using the GRADE guidelines. The top 100 most-cited articles span years 1963-2010 and are published in 50 different journals. The average number of citations per publication was 366.5 (range 189-1527). The most cited article is "Neurofibromatosis: Conference Statement" (Stumpf et al., 1988). In this study, the top 100 most-cited works in NF1 are identified, characterized, and analyzed. This study will serve as a historical point of reference for future research, a jumping point for those unfamiliar with the topic, and an educational foundation for future NF1 specialists and researchers.

Abstract
Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular condition involving stenotic carotid arteries and the formation of abnormal blood vessels. In this study, we aimed to characterize the key players involved in moyamoya research at the individual and institutional level and to identify the critical publications that have advanced our understanding of this disease. We performed a title-specific search of the Web of Science database using the search term "moyamoya" for publications dating from 1900 to April 2020. The 100 most frequently cited articles were obtained, screened for duplicates, and reviewed by 2 independent reviewers. These 100 articles were cited an average of 150 times each (range, 74 to 1,360 citations per article). Publication dates ranged from 1969 to 2016, with the largest number of publications (n=40) cited between 2000 and 2009. The article with the greatest number of citations (1,360 citations) was "Cerebrovascular 'moyamoya' disease: disease showing abnormal net-like vessels in base of brain," by Suzuki and Takaku, published in the Archives of Neurology, 1969. Stroke published the greatest number of the most frequently cited articles (23 of 100). The institution that contributed the most articles was Tohoku University (16%); the majority of the most frequently cited articles originated in Japan (62%). We identified the 100 most cited articles on moyamoya disease over the past 51 years to recognize significant and impactful works. These results can be used as a guide to evaluate our current understanding of moyamoya disease and to direct future efforts.

Abstract
Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) techniques are usually implemented during spine surgery to avoid nefarious abuse of the nervous system, which can cause postoperative problems. A lack of bibliometric analysis on the topic of IONM in spine surgery has been identified. Therefore, the aims of this study are to provide information about the main contributors to this field and their publication dynamics, as well as conceptual and cooperative networks. Results have shown that a steady publication increase has been occurring since 1991, with high levels of citations in the first decade, but irregular publication rates have been recorded more recently. Research production by country seems to be in line with what is observed in other surgical fields, but research funding for IONM in spine surgery seems to be lower, even with the clear interest of private funding agencies. The conceptual networks have shown the importance of motor-evoked potential, electromyography, and the effect of anesthesia, particularly in scoliosis surgery.

Abstract
There has been a steady increase of vestibular schwannoma (VS) research in the body of literature. To delineate the most impactful works on VS, a bibliometric analysis is warranted. The Thomson Reuters Web of Sciences database was queried to identify all articles on VS published to June 2020. The articles were sorted in descending order of the number of citations. Titles and abstracts of the top 100 most-cited articles were screened to identify the research area, publication year, author, and country of publication. Our query yielded 6477 research publications. The 100 most-cited articles were cited 15804 times. The most productive decade was the 1990s (40% of the top 100 articles). Twenty-five journals contributed to all included articles. Journal of Neurosurgery contributed most of the articles (20%). Most common contributing country was the USA (60%). "Operative treatment" was the most common research topic (68%), followed by other aspects such as medical management (13%), epidemiology (12%), diagnosis (5%), or translational medicine (2%). The current analysis highlights the importance of the multimodal approach in the study and treatment of VS. While emphasizing the relevance of including highly cited articles in the current education of VS, our results point out the deficiency in certain research areas with high impact in other fields of neuro-oncology, such as translational medicine and molecular epigenetics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine the publication rate of abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves (Spine Summit). METHODS The authors used a search algorithm in PubMed to determine the publication rate of abstracts presented at the Spine Summit from 2007 to 2012. The variables assessed were presentation modality, topic, meeting year, publication year, destiny journal and its 5-year impact factor (IF), country, and citation count (retrieved from the Scopus database). RESULTS One thousand four hundred thirty-six abstracts were analyzed; 502 were oral presentations and 934 were digital poster presentations. The publication rate was 53.97% (775/1436). The mean time from presentation to publication was 1.35 ± 1.97 years (95% CI 1.21-1.49 years). The mean citation count of published articles was 40.55 ± 55.21 (95% CI 36.66-44.44). Oral presentations had a higher publication rate (71.51%, 359/502) than digital posters (44.54%, 416/934; OR 3.13, 95% CI 2.48-3.95, p < 0.001). Oral presentations had a higher number of citations (55.51 ± 69.00, 95% CI 48.35-62.67) than digital posters (27.64 ± 34.88, 95% CI 24.28-31.00, p < 0.001). The mean IF of published articles was 3.48 ± 2.91 (95% CI 3.27-3.70). JNS: Spine (191/775, 24.64%), Spine (103/775, 13.29%), and Neurosurgery (56/775, 7.23%) had the greatest number of published articles. The US represented the highest number of published articles (616/775, 79.48%). CONCLUSIONS The publication rate of the Spine Summit is among the highest compared to other spine meetings. Many of the abstracts initially presented at the meeting are further published in high-IF journals and had a high citation count. Therefore, the Spine Summit maintains its high standards of scientific papers, which reflects the high quality of the research performed in the spine surgery field in North America.

Abstract
Bibliometric analyses may indicate the most active journals, authors, countries, institutions and specialties by evaluating the most cited articles in a given research field. To the authors' knowledge, there is no bibliometric analysis regarding neurocritical care research. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze and to provide a scope of the current scientific production in this area. The 100 most cited articles in the neurocritical care research were retrieved from the research "(neurocritical) AND (care)" in the Scopus database. The variables collected and included in this analysis were: number of citations, article title, first author's name, year and journal of publication and its impact factor (IF), specialty, affiliation and country of the corresponding author at the time of publication, and category of the article. Also, these variables were assessed for primary research only. The articles were published in 34 different journals from 1995 to 2017, with a mean citation number of 109.36, ranging from 44 to 540. Neurocritical Care (23 articles in top 100 and 2190 citations, IF = 3.163) and Critical Care Medicine (20 articles and 2896 citations in top 100, IF = 6.630) were the journals with the greatest number of articles and citations, respectively. Neurocritical Care also had the highest number of primary research papers (15 articles, accounting for 850 citations). Excepting one article from Asia (Singapore) and one from Oceania (Australia), all the other 98 papers were from North America (67) or Europe (31). United States was the country with most articles (60, 35 primary research) and citations (6115) among the top 100. Columbia University (11 articles, being 7 primary research, and 915 citations) was the institution with the highest number of articles and primary research articles in top 100, whereas University of Heidelberg (6 articles and 1220 citations) was the most cited institution. Neurology was the specialty with the greatest number of publications in top 100 and the most cited one (57 articles and 5983 citations). The first author with the greatest number of publications as well as primary research articles was A. I. Qureshi (5 articles, being 4 primary research, and 660 citations), while the most cited was K. H. Polderman (2 articles and 749 citations). Fifty-nine publications were primary and 41 secondary research. Among primary research, treatment/management was the most frequent and most cited topics (33 articles and 4172 citations). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first bibliometric analysis regarding neurocritical care research. Our findings suggest that the neurocritical care research field is more prominent in North America and Europe, more frequently published in specific critical care journals and after 1994. The most discussed topic was related to treatment and/or management within neurocritical care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyze the publication output of postgraduate pediatric neurosurgery fellows for a 10-year period as well as identify 25 individual highly productive pediatric neurosurgeons. The correlation between academic productivity and the site of fellowship training was studied. METHODS Programs certified by the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships that had 5 or more graduating fellows from 2006 to 2015 were included for analysis. Fellows were queried using Scopus for publications during those 10 years with citation data through 2017. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated, comparing program rankings of faculty against fellows using the revised Hirsch index (r-index; primary) and Hirsch index (h-index; secondary). A list of 25 highly accomplished individual academicians and their fellowship training locations was compiled. RESULTS Sixteen programs qualified with 152 fellows from 2006 to 2015; 136 of these surgeons published a total of 2009 articles with 23,735 citations. Most publications were pediatric-specific (66.7%) clinical articles (93.1%), with middle authorship (55%). Co-investigators were more likely from residency than fellowship. There was a clustering of the top 7 programs each having total publications of around 120 or greater, publications per fellow greater than 12, more than 1200 citations, and adjusted ir10 (revised 10-year institutional h-index) and ih10 (10-year institutional h-index) values of approximately 2 or higher. Correlating faculty and fellowship program rankings yielded correlation coefficients ranging from 0.53 to 0.80. Fifteen individuals (60%) in the top 25 (by r5 index) list completed their fellowship at 1 of these 7 institutions. CONCLUSIONS Approximately 90% of fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons have 1 or more publications, but the spectrum of output is broad. There is a strong correlation between where surgeons complete their fellowships and postgraduate publications.

Abstract
Introduction The Journal of Neurosurgery (JNS) published its first volume in 1944 and has evolved into the top cited journal in the field of neurosurgery. The aim of this study was to determine and characterize the 100 most cited (based on the total number of citations) vs. most relevant (based on the number of citations per year) articles originating in JNS. Methods The top 100 most cited articles in JNS were determined by searching the Web of Science database. Citations per year were additionally calculated for the top 1000 articles by total citations to rank the 100 most relevant articles. Results The median number of total citations for the 100 most cited articles in JNS was 505 (range 383-2200), and the median number of citations per year for the 100 most relevant articles was 21.88 (range 17.31-82.61). The median year of publication for the 100 most cited and most relevant articles was 1990 and 1999, respectively (P < 0.0001). Most articles originated in the United States in both categories (72% and 71%, respectively). The most common topic of study was cerebrovascular on both lists, followed by trauma on the most cited list vs. tumor on the most relevant list. The most relevant list also contained considerably more articles with a higher level of evidence such as systemic reviews/meta-analyses and prospective studies. Conclusions This study highlights the key contributing factors to the growth and flourishing of JNS. It also reveals several discrepancies between the most cited and most relevant articles, with the latter including more recently published articles, more studies addressing tumor, and more level I/1 (NHMRC/CEBM) evidence. Bibliometric analysis serves as a useful tool for clinicians and researchers to appraise published literature and understand the scientific foundation of modern neurosurgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to identify the 100 most-cited research reports on craniopharyngiomas. METHODS The Thomson Reuters Web of Science service was queried for the years 1900 to 2017 without language restrictions. The articles were sorted in descending order of the number of times they had been cited by other studies, and all titles and abstracts were screened to identify the research areas of the top 100 reports. The number of citations per year was calculated. RESULTS We identified the 100 most-cited articles on craniopharyngioma, which, collectively, had been cited 20,994 times at the time of our report. The top cited report had been cited 718 times, with an average of 144 citations annually since publication. The oldest article had been published in 1969 and the most recent in 2013; the most prolific decade was the 2000s, with 38 of the included articles published during that period. Thirty-two unique journals contributed to the 100 articles, with the Journal of Neurosurgery contributing most of the articles (n = 31). The most common country of article origin was the United States (n = 49), followed by United Kingdom (n = 12), Germany (n = 10), and Italy (n = 6). CONCLUSIONS The present study identified the 100 most-cited research articles in craniopharyngioma. These results highlight the multidisciplinary and multimodal nature of craniopharyngioma management. Recognition of important historical contributions to this field could guide future investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an abundance of articles published on meningioma. OBJECTIVE To identify the 100 most-cited articles on meningioma and to perform a bibliometric analysis. METHODS In November 2016, we performed a title-specific search of the Scopus database using "meningioma" as our search query term without publication date restrictions. The top 100 most cited articles were obtained and reviewed. RESULTS The top 100 most cited articles received a mean 198 citations per paper. Publication dates ranged from 1953 to 2013; most articles were published between 1994 and 2003, with 50 articles published during that period. NEUROSURGERY published the greatest number of top cited articles (22 of 100). The most frequent study categories were laboratorial studies (31 of 100) and natural history studies (28 of 100). Nonoperative management studies were twice as common as operative management studies in the top-cited articles. Neurosurgery as a specialty contributed to 50% of the top 100 list. The most contributing institute was the Mayo Clinic (11%); the majority of the top cited articles originated in the United States (53%). CONCLUSIONS We identified the top 100 most-cited articles on meningioma that may be considered significant and impactful works, as well as the most noteworthy. In addition, we recognized the historical development and advances in meningioma research and the important contributions of various authors, specialty fields, and countries. A large proportion of the most cited articles were written by authors other than neurosurgeons, and many of these articles were published in non-neurosurgery journals.
