Abstract
INTRODUCTION Total resection of cystic craniopharyngiomas is challenging, especially for some large cystic tumors, because it is often associated with high recurrence and morbidity rates. Minimally invasive cyst decompression and continuous drainage are appropriate to manage clinical symptoms. We reviewed our experience of the past 11 years to determine the long-term effects of neuroendoscopic surgery (NES) combined with Ommaya reservoir (OR) for the treatment of cystic craniopharyngiomas. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the data of 15 adult patients with cystic craniopharyngiomas at a single institution with the primary goal to evaluate the treatment mode with initial adequate decompression of the cyst under visualization and continuous drainage. The study endpoints were functional outcome, cyst volume changes, and tumor progression. RESULTS The median follow up was 77 (20-136) months. Clinical symptoms, e.g. increased intracranial pressure and visual impairment, could be rapidly improved after NES. The postoperative reduction in cyst volume (p < 0.001) and improvement in Karnofsky performance status (p < 0.001) were significant, and long-term tumor control was achieved in 10 patients (67%). Aspiration from the OR after progression of the tumor's cystic portion remains a major option, with only few patients requiring repeat NES procedures. No patient developed acute or severe clinical symptoms during follow up. CONCLUSIONS NES could decompress the craniopharyngioma cyst under visualization and enable faster clinical-symptom improvement. The minimally invasive NES combined with OR allowed long-term symptom control in most patients without surgery-related injury. This palliative treatment strategy could be an alternative modality for cystic craniopharyngioma treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This bibliometric analysis aims to identify the most impactful articles on hemangioblastoma (HB) and evaluate the trajectory of academic literature in the field. METHODS The authors performed a title search using the Web of Science database, with ("hemangioblastoma" OR "haemangioblastoma") as a search query. The top 100 cited articles from the years 1900-2020 were sorted by the descending order of the total citation count. The following variables were assessed for each article: title, first author name and institution, publication year, country of origin, citation count, citations per year, and journal impact factor. RESULTS The query yielded 1918 articles related to the topic of HB that were published between the years 1900 and 2020 in 42 unique journals. The most prolific decade of publication was the 2000s (35%), followed by the 1990s (33%) and the 1980s (11%). The average citation count was 88.3 (range, 47-426), and the mean number of citations per year was 3.74 (range, 0.660-17.8). CONCLUSIONS This is the first bibliometric analysis to evaluate the most influential HB publications. Though a majority of HBs are sporadic, these results suggest a research focus on von Hippel-Lindau-associated tumors. Despite established evidence for the potential to control HB growth with vascular endothelial growth factor inhibition, there are no known clinical trials underway for this investigation. There is a need for consistent treatment guidelines for asymptomatic HBs, as resection can prevent the development of neurological deficits. An improved understanding of the etiology of these neoplasms could promote the development of novel diagnostic and treatment methods.

Abstract
Objective In this study, we aimed to analyze research activity on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in general and CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea in particular and to identify the main topic clusters in these areas. Methods We identified all relevant documents, using the medical subject heading (MeSH) term “Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak”, that are indexed in the MEDLINE database between 1945 and 2018. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis and analyses of networks and research clusters in order to identify the main topic areas of research. Results From 1945 to 2018, a total of 4,130 records were published with the term CSF leak, including 2,821 documents (68.1%) with the term CSF rhinorrhea and 1,040 documents (25.8%) with CSF otorrhea. The number of documents published increased from 10 in 1945-49 to 642 in 2010-14. Articles represented the dominant document type (86.8% of the documents analyzed), while case reports were the main type of study (37.4%). In terms of geographical distribution, researchers from the USA led in the number of signatures (39.1%), followed by those from the UK (7.5%). The most active areas of research in the field were “Postoperative Complications,” “Tomography, X-Ray Computed,” and “Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” The terms “Adults,” “Young Adult,” and “Middle-Aged” were most common in CSF rhinorrhea research; and the terms “Infant,” “Child, Preschool,” “Child,” and “Adolescent” were more common in CSF otorrhea. Conclusions Based on our findings, articles and case reports related to “Surgery” and “Postoperative Complications” associated with the diagnosis are the main topics of study, highlighting the importance of this document type in advancing knowledge in the field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Scientometrics is a subfield of bibliometrics that statistically analyzes publications trends. The aim of this initial study was to investigate trends in the 6 major neurosurgical journals from the last 10 years. METHODS We searched Web of Science and Scopus for articles published in Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, Operative Neurosurgery, and World Neurosurgery from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2020. Statistically analyzed parameters included national and continental distribution of articles, population density, density of neurosurgeons per 100,000 inhabitants, national per capita GDP, and national literacy rates. Bibliometric parameters assessed included total number of articles, H-indices, absolute/average number of citations per article, and article types. RESULTS A total of 39,239 articles were published in the 6 journals. Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery had the strongest source impact. The most productive year was 2019 with 6811 published articles. Corresponding authors from the USA, China, Japan, Western Europe, and Turkey were the most productive. Articles published by authors from the USA received the majority of citations. Publication numbers increased in proportion with increases in country population, literacy rate, per capita GDP, and neurosurgeon density. The highest number of articles were published in 2016, and the fewest were published in 2020. CONCLUSIONS Geographic trends in the diversity of neurosurgical publications sustained its steady increase in most developed counties. Simultaneously, the publication gap between developed and developing countries has remained stagnant.

Abstract
Background Craniopharyngioma (CP) is a challenging intracranial tumor due to its special hypothalamus-pituitary location. Each patient with CP should be evaluated and treated separately. Exploring novel methods of automatized analysis of data for gaining knowledge on any medical field is an encouraging task, particularly in such an extremely challenging tumor as CP. We aim to summary the situations, investigate the research trends and evaluate research hotspots using bibliometric analysis for the CP research. Methods We extracted all the CP-related literatures from 2011 to 2020 from the Web of Science database. An Online analysis platform of literature metrology (Bibliometric), BICOMB, gCLUTO and CiteSpace softwares were used to do bibliometric analysis. As a supplement, we also analyzed the top 100 cited case reports with particular and certainly infrequent information to improve the analysis. Results According to our retrieval strategy, we found a total of 1262 CP-related literatures. The United States has maintained a leading position in global CP research, followed by China and Germany. Among institutions, Capital Med Univ, St Jude Childrens Res Hosp and Southern Med Univ rank in the top 3 in terms of the number of articles published. “WORLD NEUROSURGERY” is the most popular journal for CP-related research. Moreover, MULLER HL, MERCHANT TE, QI ST and others have made great achievements in the study of CP. Finally, we did biclustering analysis on keywords and identified 4 CP research hotspot clusters. Conclusions Our research provides a comprehensive analysis of the scientific progress of CP in the past 10 years, and insight into the development of CP research field, highlight research trends over time, and help identify valuable future directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Craniosynostosis is the premature closure of cranial sutures and it continues to be a therapeutic challenge due to the diversity and complexity of the syndrome. Bibliometric analysis is a study of ranking citations and exploring the most impactful articles in a respective discipline. It also demonstrates the chronological trends of publications. METHODS In May 2020, we performed a title-specific search of the Scopus database using "craniosynostosis" as our query term without publication date restrictions. The top 100 articles in craniosynostosis were retrieved and analyzed. RESULTS The top 100 most-cited articles in craniosynostosis received a total 13,826 citations, and an average of 138 citations per paper. The publication dates ranged from 1920 to 2015, with a peak period of top publications between 1996 and 2005. The most common category is clinical, followed by neurogenetics. The top cited article received 540 citation counts and 19.29 citations per year. The USA was the most contributing country to the list. The Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery published the largest number of top cited articles. Neurosurgery as a specialty contributed to most articles in the list (27 articles). The institute who contributed the most was the Assistance Publique Hopitaux Paris. CONCLUSION Bibliometric analysis in craniosynostosis revealed major trend changes of research over the years, with a focus on neurogenetics and the different types of surgical corrections. The current collection of highly cited publications may assist physicians in gaining a better understanding of the evidence-based approach in craniosynostosis.

Abstract
There has been a steady increase of vestibular schwannoma (VS) research in the body of literature. To delineate the most impactful works on VS, a bibliometric analysis is warranted. The Thomson Reuters Web of Sciences database was queried to identify all articles on VS published to June 2020. The articles were sorted in descending order of the number of citations. Titles and abstracts of the top 100 most-cited articles were screened to identify the research area, publication year, author, and country of publication. Our query yielded 6477 research publications. The 100 most-cited articles were cited 15804 times. The most productive decade was the 1990s (40% of the top 100 articles). Twenty-five journals contributed to all included articles. Journal of Neurosurgery contributed most of the articles (20%). Most common contributing country was the USA (60%). "Operative treatment" was the most common research topic (68%), followed by other aspects such as medical management (13%), epidemiology (12%), diagnosis (5%), or translational medicine (2%). The current analysis highlights the importance of the multimodal approach in the study and treatment of VS. While emphasizing the relevance of including highly cited articles in the current education of VS, our results point out the deficiency in certain research areas with high impact in other fields of neuro-oncology, such as translational medicine and molecular epigenetics.
