Abstract
OBJECTIVE During the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Young Neurosurgeons Committee (YNC) and Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (NREF) launched the YNC-NREF Webinar Series to provide young and aspiring neurosurgeons with timely information, education, and inspiration in the absence of in-person programming. DESIGN Five 90-minute Zoom webinars were evaluated, each including 1-2 keynote speakers, a panel discussion, and an audience question-and-answer section. Topics included overviews of neurosurgery, the match, subspecialties, and inspirational career stories. Optional pre- and post-webinar surveys with 11-point Likert-type scores were distributed to attendees. We compared groups using chi-squared and Kruskal-Willis tests, and perceptions pre- and post-webinar using Mann-Whitney tests. SETTING The webinars were live using Zoom, and the recordings were published on NREF's YouTube channel. PARTICIPANTS The webinar series targeted young neurosurgeons. The first five episodes had a particular focus on medical students and undergraduates. RESULTS A total of 673 unique participants attended the webinar series; 257 (38%) and 78 (11%) attendees completed the pre- and post-webinar survey, respectively. Respondents had high baseline interest in neurosurgery and were motivated to learn about the match and training in the US, understand neurosurgeons' day-to-day lives, and ask questions. There were significant differences in perceptions between USMSs, IMSs, and undergraduate students. The webinar improved attendees' knowledge about neurosurgical specialties, the match, and US neurosurgery training. CONCLUSIONS The YNC and NREF effectively engaged a large, diverse audience through an online webinar series, building a foundation for future virtual programming by organized neurosurgery. Abstract
Introduction The training of neurosurgeons is evolving in a world of socio-professional changes, including the technological revolution, administrative pressure on stakeholders, reduced working hours, geographical heterogeneity, generational changes, to name but a few. Research question This qualitative study aimed to explore experiences and feedback of French neurosurgical trainees concerning their training. Material and methods The grounded theory approach was used with 23 neurosurgical trainees' interviews. Inclusion was continued until data saturation. Six researchers (an anthropologist, a psychiatrist, and four neurosurgeons) thematically and independently analyzed data collected through anonymized interviews. Results Data analysis identified three superordinate themes: (1) The Trainee-Senior Dyad, where the respondents describe a similar bipolarity between trainees and faculty (trainees oscillating between those who fit into the system and those who are more reluctant to accept hierarchy, faculty using an ideal pedagogy while others refuse to help or invest in training); (2) The difficulty to learn (describing pressure exercised on trainees that can alter their motivation and degrade their training, including the impact of administrative tasks); (3) A pedagogy of empowerment (trainee' feelings about the pertinent pedagogy in the OR, ideal sequence to progress, progressive empowerment especially during the shifts, and stress of envisioning themselves as a senior neurosurgeon). Discussion and conclusion Respondents emphasize the heterogeneity of their training both intra- and inter-university-hospital. Their critical analysis, as well as the formalization of their stress to become autonomous seniors, can be an important link with the reforms and optimizations currently being carried out to improve and standardize the training of young French neurosurgeons.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE With the increasing prevalence of spine surgery, ensuring effective resident training is becoming of increasing importance. Training safe, competent surgeons relies heavily on effective teaching of surgical indications and adequate practice to achieve a minimum level of technical proficiency before independent practice. American Council of Graduate Medical Education work-hour restrictions have complicated the latter, forcing programs to identify novel methods of surgical resident training. Simulation-based training is one such method that can be used to complement traditional training. The present review aims to evaluate the educational success of simulation-based models in the spine surgical training of residents. METHODS Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, the PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were systematically screened for English full-text studies examining simulation-based spine training curricula. Studies were categorized based on simulation model class, including animal-cadaveric, human-cadaveric, physical/3-dimensional, and computer-based/virtual reality. Outcomes studied included participant feedback regarding the simulator and competency metrics used to evaluate participant performance. RESULTS Seventy-two studies were identified. Simulators displayed high face validity and were useful for spine surgery training. Objective measures used to evaluate procedural performance included implant placement evaluation, procedural time, and technical skill assessment, with numerous simulators demonstrating a learning effect. CONCLUSIONS While simulation-based educational models are one potential means of training residents to perform spine surgery, traditional in-person operating room training remains pivotal. To establish the efficacy of simulators, future research should focus on improving study quality by leveraging longitudinal study designs and correlating simulation-based training with clinical outcome measures.

Abstract
Today, numerous international researchers have demonstrated that N7-methylguanosine (m7G) related long non-coding RNAs (m7G-related lncRNAs) are closely linked to the happenings and developments of various human beings’ cancers. However, the connection between m7G-related lncRNAs and glioma prognosis has not been investigated. We did this study to look for new potential biomarkers and construct an m7G-related lncRNA prognostic signature for glioma. We identified those lncRNAs associated with DEGs from glioma tissue sequences as m7G-related lncRNAs. First, we used Pearson’s correlation analysis to identify 28 DEGs by glioma and normal brain tissue gene sequences and predicated 657 m7G-related lncRNAs. Then, eight lncRNAs associated with prognosis were obtained and used to construct the m7G risk score model by lasso and Cox regression analysis methods. Furthermore, we used Kaplan-Meier analysis, time-dependent ROC, principal component analysis, clinical variables, independent prognostic analysis, nomograms, calibration curves, and expression levels of lncRNAs to determine the model’s accuracy. Importantly, we validated the model with external and internal validation methods and found it has strong predictive power. Finally, we performed functional enrichment analysis (GSEA, aaGSEA enrichment analyses) and analyzed immune checkpoints, associated pathways, and drug sensitivity based on predictors. In conclusion, we successfully constructed the formula of m7G-related lncRNAs with powerful predictive functions. Our study provides instructional value for analyzing glioma pathogenesis and offers potential research targets for glioma treatment and scientific research.

Abstract
Neurosurgeons have a rich history of involvement in medical student education. We review the scope of related published works with the goal of highlighting recently increased efforts to innovate in neurosurgical education and discuss where future efforts must go. A scoping review was performed after comprehensive search of PubMed MEDLINE and Embase databases. Among the 2314 articles returned in the search, 54 were selected for inclusion and review. Articles are discussed in the context of neurosurgery electives, American Association of Neurological Surgeons chapters and medical school programs, national neurosurgery courses, neurosurgery education materials, neurosurgery career perceptions, and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019. Despite increasing need for neurosurgical education in medical school, available experiences in formal curricula are diminishing. Longitudinal exposure to neurosurgery throughout medical school will help ensure a foundational understanding of neurosurgical disease management for all physicians and provide a pathway of exploration, education, and mentorship for the most suitable candidates. Neurosurgery faculty mentorship is particularly important to ensure that the next generation of neurologic surgeons is well equipped to treat patients, catalyze innovative research, and espouse both diverse perspectives and novel ideas.

Abstract
Globally, the discipline of neurosurgery has evolved remarkably fast. Despite being one of the latest medical specialties, which appeared only around hundred years ago, it has witnessed innovations in the aspects of diagnostics methods, macro and micro surgical techniques, and treatment modalities. Unfortunately, this development is not evenly distributed between developed and developing countries. The same is the case with neurosurgical education and training, which developed from only traditional apprentice programs in the past to more structured, competence-based programs with various teaching methods being utilized, in recent times. A similar gap can be observed between developed and developing counties when it comes to neurosurgical education. Fortunately, most of the scholars working in this field do understand the coherent relationship between neurosurgical education and neurosurgical practice. In context to this understanding, a symposium was organized during the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) Special World Congress Beijing 2019. This symposium was the brain child of Prof. Yoko Kato—one of the eminent leaders in neurosurgery and an inspiration for female neurosurgeons. Invited speakers from different continents presented the stages of development of neurosurgical education in their respective countries. This paper summarizes the outcome of these presentations, with particular emphasis on and the challenges faced by developing countries in terms of neurosurgical education and strategies to cope with these challenges.
