The Rise of Electroactive Materials in Face Masks for Preventing Virus Infections

Air-transmitted pathogens may cause severe epidemics, posing considerable threats to public health and safety. Wearing a face mask is one of the most effective ways to prevent respiratory virus infection transmission. Especially since the new coronavirus pandemic, electroactive materials have received much attention in antiviral face masks due to their highly efficient antiviral capabilities, flexible structural design, excellent sustainability, and outstanding safety. This review first introduces the mechanism for preventing viral infection or the inactivation of viruses by electroactive materials. Then, the applications of electrostatic-, conductive-, triboelectric-, and microbattery-based materials in face masks are described in detail. Finally, the problems of various electroactive antiviral materials are summarized, and the prospects for their future development directions are discussed. In conclusion, electroactive materials have attracted great attention for antiviral face masks, and this review will provide a reference for materials scientists and engineers in antiviral materials and interfaces.

Mechanisms, Techniques and Devices of Airborne Virus Detection: A Review

Airborne viruses, such as COVID-19, cause pandemics all over the world. Virus-containing particles produced by infected individuals are suspended in the air for extended periods, actually resulting in viral aerosols and the spread of infectious diseases. Aerosol collection and detection devices are essential for limiting the spread of airborne virus diseases. This review provides an overview of the primary mechanisms and enhancement techniques for collecting and detecting airborne viruses. Indoor virus detection strategies for scenarios with varying ventilations are also summarized based on the excellent performance of existing advanced comprehensive devices. This review provides guidance for the development of future aerosol detection devices and aids in the control of airborne transmission diseases, such as COVID-19, influenza and other airborne transmission viruses.

Dual-Mode Integrated Janus Films with Highly Efficient NaH2 PO2 -Enhanced Infrared Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating for Year-Round Thermal Management

The currently available materials cannot meet the requirements of human thermal comfort against the hot and cold seasonal temperature fluctuations. In this study, a dual-mode Janus film with a bonded interface to gain dual-mode functions of both highly efficient radiative cooling and solar heating for year-round thermal management is designed and prepared. The cooling side is achieved by embedding NaH₂ PO₂ particles with high infrared radiation (IR) emittance into a porous polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film during pore formation process, which is reported for the first time to the knowledge. A synergistic enhancement of NaH₂ PO₂ and 3D porous structure leads to efficient radiant cooling with high solar reflectance (R̅_solar ≈ 92.6%) and high IR emittance (ε̅_IR ≈ 97.2%), especially the ε̅_IR value is much greater than that of the reported best porous polymer films. In outdoor environments under 750 mW cm^-2 solar radiation, the dual-mode Janus film shows subambient cooling temperature of ≈8.8 °C and heating temperature reaching ≈39.3 °C, indicating excellent thermal management capacity. A wide temperature range is obtained only by flipping the dual-mode Janus film for thermal management. This work provides an advanced zero-energy-consumption human thermal management technique based on the high-performance dual-mode integrated Janus film material.

Self-Powered Fine Dust Filtration Using Triboelectrification-Induced Electric Field

Particulate matter (PM) in the environment can adversely affect the health of living things. However, high removal efficiency and low-pressure loss are crucial design challenges for any air filtration system. To circumvent the challenge, here, we demonstrate a novel triboelectric (TE) air filtration system that is based on a rotation-type triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and a filter comprising two sets of plates: primary and secondary, that are placed in the airflow channel. When the TENG charges the two plate sets with opposite charges, the flowing air particles are charged at the primary plates and are collected, due to an electric field, at the secondary plates. The TE filter has demonstrated a PM_2.5 removal efficiency of ~ 99.97% for the fine dust particles, and it remains stable even after several washing cycles. The pressure loss is almost two orders less than the high-efficiency particulate air filter. Since the airflow itself can drive the TENG, the TE filter can potentially be integrated with any air conditioning system for fine dust filtration in offices, automobiles, etc.
