Abstract
Objective: Cognitive, mood, and behavioral changes are common among persons with epilepsy (PWE), resulting in a complex neuropsychological presentation. Women with epilepsy (WWE) represent a distinct cohort within the broader epilepsy population due to sex and gender-specific factors impacting epilepsy semiology and treatment. However, unique neuropsychological profiles among WWE have not been established. This narrative review aims to further define neuropsychological correlates in WWE and promote meaningful discussion related to enhancing the provision of neuropsychological care within this clinical population. Method: Current literature in PWE examining differences in cognitive function, mental health, and quality of life (QoL) between women and men was critically reviewed, emphasizing considerations for neuropsychological practice. Results: WWE demonstrate a preservation of verbal learning and memory compared to men both pre- and post-surgically, with sex-based, neurobiological mechanisms likely contributing to this association. WWE also have elevated risk for affective disorder psychopathology, suicidality, and traumatic experiences. Epidemiology related to psychotic and bipolar spectrum disorders is less clear, and findings are mixed regarding sex-specific behavioral side effects of antiseizure and psychotropic medication. Finally, hormonal and obstetric factors are highlighted as important contributors to neuropsychological symptoms in WWE, with elevated risk for low QoL and increased stigma associated with greater medical and psychiatric comorbidities compared to men. Conclusions: While emerging literature has begun to characterize the neuropsychological presentation of WWE, future research is needed to define sex and gender differences in neuropsychological sequalae among PWE to ensure consistency and quality of care for WWE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Serbian-language version of the Stigma Scale of Epilepsy (SSE). METHODS The sample consisted of 108 patients with epilepsy (PWE) (60.2 % were female, age range: 19-67 years) and 102 students (86.3 % were female, age range: 18-47 years). The study encompassed two phases: (1) translation of the SSE into Serbian using the back-translation technique, and (2) evaluation of reliability and construct validity of the Serbian-language version of SSE. In addition to the SSE, the PWE filled out a Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). The socio-demographic and clinical variables were noted for each patient by the semistructured interview. Besides completing the SSE, the students were asked if they knew anyone with epilepsy. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested by assessing the internal consistency of the scale (Cronbach's α), while construct validity was assessed by factor analysis, method of known-groups validation, and correlation analysis. RESULTS SSE demonstrates a satisfactory level of reliability in both samples, with Cronbach's α of 0.86 in the PWE sample and 0.90 in the student sample. Using exploratory factor analysis, four factors were identified in both samples, corresponding relatively well with the scale domains originally produced, with a few exceptions described. Adverse effects (AEs) of antiseizure medications (ASMs) and driving ability significantly influenced SSE scores, but there were no significant effects of other socio-demographic and clinical variables on epilepsy-related stigma in the PWE sample. In addition, depression severity significantly influenced SSE scores (based on NDDI-E cut-off score), with the SSE showing a positive association with PHQ-9 (r = 0.42, p < .001) and GAD-7 (r = 0.35, p < .001) as well. Regarding the student sample, the effects of personal knowledge of someone with epilepsy on SSE scores were found to be significant. Besides, students (M = 46.28, SD = 16.43) reported higher epilepsy-related stigma than patients (M = 40.66, SD = 17.01), t(208) = 2.43, p < .05, d = 0.34. CONCLUSION The Serbian version of the SSE has good psychometric properties and represents a useful tool for assessing epilepsy-related stigma in both patients and the general population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Suboptimal medication adherence is common in people with epilepsy (PWE) and disproportionally prevalent among racially/ethnically diverse patients. Understanding reasons and risks of suboptimal adherence is critical to developing interventions that reduce negative health outcomes. This cross-sectional study characterized common barriers to medication self-management, prevalence of negative medication beliefs, and gaps in epilepsy knowledge among predominantly African American and Caribbean American PWE and examined their interrelationships. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-three PWE (Age = 42.1 ± 13.2; 60% female; 79% Black; 19% Hispanic/Latino) completed validated self-report questionnaires about medication self-management, medication beliefs, and epilepsy knowledge. Correlations and t-tests examined interrelationships. RESULTS Four barriers to medication self-management were common, including not taking antiseizure medications at the same time every day, forgetting doses, not planning refills before running out, and spreading out doses when running low. More than half the sample believed medications were overused by prescribers. Nearly one-third believed medications were harmful, and nearly a quarter believed their antiseizure medications were minimally necessary with almost half reporting elevated concerns about negative consequences of antiseizure medications. Poorer medication self-management was associated with stronger beliefs that medications in general are harmful/overused by prescribers. Individuals who were "accepting" of their antiseizure medications (i.e., high perceived necessity, low concerns) were less likely to spread out time between doses when running low compared to non-accepting counterparts. Knowledge gaps related to the cause of seizures/epilepsy, chronicity of epilepsy treatment, and seizure semiology/diagnosis were common. Nevertheless, epilepsy knowledge was unrelated to medication self-management and medication beliefs. CONCLUSIONS In these PWE, the most prevalent reasons for suboptimal medication self-management were behaviorally mediated and potentially modifiable. Negative medication beliefs and misconceptions about epilepsy and its treatment were common. Results further suggest that interventions addressing negative medication beliefs will be more effective than knowledge-based psychoeducation alone to improve medication self-management in this patient population.

Abstract
Background
The study is aimed to identify the predictors of Quality of Life (QOL) in women with epilepsy (WWE) on carbamazepine (CBM) and levetiracetam (LTM) monotherapy. 100 WWE were recruited (50 each on CBM and LTM), after clinical diagnosis of epilepsy supported by Electroencephalography (EEG) features and seizures classification by 2017 International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) criteria, the Quality of Life Inventory Scale 31(QOLIE-31) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSRDS) were used to assess QOL and depression, respectively.
Result
Higher QOLIE-31 scores was seen in the LTM group across all domains except seizure worry (p = 0.051) compared to CBM group. Logistic regression showed that the use of CBM (p = 0.000), fast frequency on EEG (p = 0.005), longer duration of epilepsy (p = 0.017), presence of depression (p = 0.008) and lower level of education (p = 0.003) were predictors of QOL. Progesterone (p = 0.040), oestradiol (p = 0.011) and prolactin (p = 0.002) in follicular phase showed significant association with QOLIE-total score. In the luteal phase, luteinizing hormone–follicle stimulating hormone (LH–FSH) ratio (p = 0.009) and testosterone (p = 0.015), FSH (p = 0.015), prolactin (p = 0.000), showed significant association with QOL. None of the hormones independently predicts QOL.
Conclusion
LTM group appears to have better QOL than CBM group. Healthcare providers should focus on addressing these identified predictors which include medication effect, depression, Level of education, EEG background and duration of epilepsy with aim of improving QOL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the presence of felt and enacted stigma in people with epilepsy (PWE), members of a self-governing epilepsy organization and to evaluate the influence of both types of stigma on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in PWE. METHODS Participants were 55 PWE (age range: 18-53 years), members of a non-governmental organization (further "NGO"). The sociodemographic and epilepsy-related variables were collected through structured interviews designed for the purpose of the study. Felt stigma was assessed with the Epilepsy Stigma Scale (ESS) and enacted stigma with the Questionnaire for episodes of discrimination against PWE. Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31) (Serbian version) was used for the evaluation of HRQoL. RESULTS The mean ESS score was 33.93 ± 14.50. Felt stigma was significantly associated with the male gender and the number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Participants' mean score on the Questionnaire for episodes of discrimination was 2.80 ± 2.78. Enacted stigma was significantly correlated with male gender and number of AEDs, as well as with older age/longer duration of the disorder. Felt stigma scores were positively correlated with enacted stigma scores (p < 0.001), but only felt stigma scores were negatively related to QOLIE-31 overall score (p = 0.01). The combination of AEDs, seizure frequency, and felt stigma best explained the HRQoL in PWE (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Felt and enacted stigma are moderately related, but only felt stigma appears to be a significant predictor of the deteriorating HRQoL in this sample. Interventions targeting felt stigma should be considered a part of comprehensive epilepsy care as well as educating the wider community about epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-stigma is considered to have immensely negative influences on the living and psychological states in patients with epilepsy. Understanding the stigma experienced by patients with epilepsy is essential considering its negative impact on their treatment and quality of life (QOL). However, few sufficiently validated self-report instruments are available to evaluate self-stigma in patients with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Stigma Scale (ESS) is one of the most commonly used self-reported questionnaires available to evaluate self-stigma in patients with epilepsy. The present study translated the ESS into Japanese to validate the Japanese version of the ESS (ESS-J) in Japanese adults with epilepsy. METHODS The study included 338 patients with epilepsy (166 men, aged 18-75 years) who underwent comprehensive assessment including long-term video-electroencephalography monitoring, neuroimaging studies, and neuropsychological and psychosocial assessments in the Tohoku University Hospital Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. This study consisted of two phases: (1) translation of the ESS into Japanese using the back-translation technique; and (2) statistical analysis of the ESS-J to evaluate the factor structure, reliability, and validity. RESULTS The 2-factor model achieved acceptable fit to the data: χ2 = 161.27, df = 34, p < 0.01, comparative fit index = 0.929, root mean square error of approximation = 0.105, standardized root mean squared residual = 0.047, Akaike's information criterion = 203.27 and, Bayesian information criterion = 283.56. These two subscales were named enacted stigma and felt stigma based on the theoretical model of self-stigma. We found the ESS-J to have acceptable internal consistency as follows: enacted (7 items; α = 0.88) and felt stigma subscale (3 items; α = 0.82). The concurrent validity was confirmed by adequate correlation with other related instruments. Both enacted and felt stigma had positive and moderate correlations with depression as measured by the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (r = 0.44, p < 0.01; r = 0.41, p < 0.01, respectively) and with anxiety as measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder -7 (r = 0.48, p < 0.01; r = 0.38, p < 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSION The ESS-J demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. The present study provided preliminary evidence about the psychometric properties of the ESS-J, indicating the reliable factorial structure, adequate internal consistency, and satisfactory construct and concurrent validity. Measurement of the two types of self-stigma may offer a useful tool for clinical interpretation of patients' psychological state throughout epilepsy care, and as one of the patient-reported outcomes in QOL research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a chronic non-communicable brain disorder and the second most burdensome disease in terms of disability-adjusted life years which is characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures, and a constant threat to the quality of life of the patient. Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries and the risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is up to three times higher than for the general population. In many parts of the world, people with epilepsy and their families suffer from stigma and discrimination. This study was aimed to assess the quality of life and associated factors among adult people living with epilepsy using the world health organization quality of life assessment tool. METHODS Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted on 419 epileptic patients using a systematic random sampling technique. The data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. The data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 25 software for further analysis and bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were done to identify factors associated with the dependent variable. The level of significance was declared as P value <0.05. RESULT A total of 402 epileptic patients with a median age of 28 years were involved in the study. The result of this study was revealed that 47.8% (95% CI: 42%, 52%) of the respondents had poor quality of life. Respondents who were in the middle age group (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.70), lower educational level (AOR = 3.11, 95%CI: 1.35, 7.15), those who had low drug adherence (AOR = 8.36, 95%CI: (2.41, 28.98) comorbid anxiety, (AOR = 3.63, 95% CI: 2.55, 8.42) and depression (AOR = 3.85, 95% CI: 2.16, 6.82) were found to be significantly associated with poor quality of life of epilepsy patients. CONCLUSION This study revealed that almost one in two epileptic patients had poor quality of life. Age of the respondents, lower educational level, comorbid anxiety and depression, and lower adherence to drugs were significantly associated with poor quality of life. Therefore, health institutions and clinicians should not focus only on the treatment of the disease itself rather they should address diseases' impact on the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine whether gender influences the prediction of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in persons with newly diagnosed epilepsy (NDE). METHODS This was a 1-year longitudinal study. Persons with NDE were assessed with the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), the Stigma Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with interaction terms was used. RESULTS Among 134 adults with NDE, there were no gender differences in the scores of the QOLIE-31 and its subscales. A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the HADS-anxiety scores at diagnosis (p = 0.005) and seizure recurrence after diagnosis (p = 0.050) negatively predicted QOLIE-31 scores in persons with NDE. There were significant effects of the gender interaction with seizure recurrence (F = 8.745, p = 0.004, partial eta2 = 0.066) and antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy (F = 6.320, p = 0.013, partial eta2 = 0.049) in the adjusted model. Specifically, seizure recurrence negatively predicted the QOLIE-31 scores only in men. By contrast, AED polytherapy negatively predicted the QOLIE-31 scores only in women. CONCLUSIONS There are gender differences in certain epilepsy-related factors predicting HRQoL at 1 year in persons with NDE.

Abstract
PURPOSE We determined whether resilience factors such as self-efficacy, stress coping styles, and social support were differentially associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in men and women with epilepsy after controlling for depression, anxiety, and daily-life stress. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 129 adults with epilepsy. The Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale, Way of Stress Coping Checklist, Social Support Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Daily Hassles Scale were used. Stepwise linear regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Except for medication effects, there were no gender differences in the QOLIE-31 and its subscales. The medication effects score was higher in men than in women after controlling for BDI scores. The BDI scores were independently associated with the QOLIE-31 score in men and women. Epilepsy self-efficacy was associated with the QOLIE-31 in men, whereas social support was associated with the QOLIE-31 in women. Coping strategies were associated with the QOLIE-31 in neither men nor women. Seizure frequency, daily-life stress, and anxiety were also negatively associated with the QOLIE-31, but only in men. The coefficients of determination were 0.637 and 0.587 in the men's and women's models, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The influence of self-efficacy and social support on HRQoL differed between men and women with epilepsy even after controlling for psychological distress. These findings could contribute to the development of successful gender-specific psychosocial interventions to improve HRQoL in men and women with epilepsy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to investigate the levels, interrelationships, and associated factors of community integration (CI), perceived stigma (PS), and self-esteem in people living with epilepsy (PWE) in Anambra and Enugu States of south-east Nigeria. METHODS This was a cross-sectional survey involving 70 consenting adults living with epilepsy consecutively recruited from three purposively sampled specialized clinics in Anambra State. The Reintegration to Normal Living Index, the Epilepsy Stigma Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used to estimate CI, PS, and self-esteem, respectively among the participants. Data were analyzed at 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS The mean age of the participants (28.6% females) was 34.91 ± 16.21 years. The participants had moderate PS score (43.54 ± 14.20), poor self-esteem score (17.63 ± 6.12), and mild-to-moderately restricted CI score (67.83 ± 24.72). Participants' PS, CI, and self-esteem significantly correlated with one another (p < 0.05) with PS and self-esteem being significant predictors of CI. Participants' PS had a significant correlation with their age at onset of epilepsy, while their self-esteem and CI significantly correlated with their seizure episodes (p < 0.05). Participants' PS and CI were significantly different across different categories of their occupational and educational statuses. Perceived stigma also varied across participants' marital status with divorced participants having the worst score (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION People living with epilepsy had moderate PS, poor self-esteem, and mild-to-moderate CI, which correlated significantly with one another. Results suggest the possibility of using CI as an outcome for assessing the effectiveness of stigma and self-esteem interventions during epilepsy rehabilitation.

Abstract
Background: Quality of life (QOL) is a vital outcome measure in people living with epilepsy. The aim of this study is to determine the sociodemographic and clinical factors that predict poor QOL in patients with epilepsy. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was carried out at the outpatient psychiatric clinic of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, Nigeria, for 6 months. Seventy-four patients with epilepsy who met the inclusion criteria were recruited to participate in the study. The mental health of these patients and their QOL were assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the short form of the World Health Organization QOL instrument, respectively. Data were analyzed using epi-info version 6.04d, and logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors that predict poor QOL. Results: Psychiatric disorder was found in 33 (44.6%) of the respondents. The presence of these psychiatric disorders was predictive of poor score on the overall QOL (odds ratio [OR] = 0.382; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.145–0.983; P = 0.0046), physical (OR = 0.269; 95% CI = 0.100–1.722; P = 0.009), and psychological health domain (OR = 0.269; 95% CI = 0.102–0.709; P = 0.008). Longer duration of epilepsy was predictive of a poor score on the health satisfaction item (OR = 0.202; 95% CI = 0.06–0.679; P = 0.010) while being single was predictive of poor score on the social relationship domain (OR = 0.177; 95% CI = 0.065–0.482; P = 0.001). Conclusion: The presence of psychiatric disorder, long duration of epilepsy, and being single were predictive of poor QOL. The importance of social relation, prompt seizure control, and efficient collaboration between psychiatrist and other medical professionals in the care of patients with epilepsy cannot be overemphasized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related stigma is a great challenge to the treatment of diseases. In epilepsy like other conditions, it causes affected individuals to conceal their illness. In this study, we described stigma perceived by patients with epilepsy at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), a tertiary referral facility, and the Accra Psychiatry Hospital in Ghana (APH). We then compared the perception of stigma in patients with epilepsy to stigma perceived by persons living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) (PLWHA), a chronic communicable disease stigmatized in Ghana. METHODS A total of 351 patients with epilepsy were recruited from both sites by systematic random sampling and interviewed. The Kilifi Stigma Scale for Epilepsy was used to determine individual patient's stigma score. Statistical analysis was done using multiple logistic regression analysis to control for the effect of measured independent variables that were significant on univariate analysis: age, gender, marital status, income, type of epilepsy, and the frequency of seizures, on the outcome variable. Comparative analysis of the mean stigma score in patients with epilepsy and persons living with HIV/AIDS was done using the Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test (Wilcoxon rank sum test). RESULTS The presence of perceived stigma using the Kilifi Stigma Score Estimation was 32.02% (62), 33.33% (49), and 28.88% (54) among respondents from KBTH, APH, and PLWHA respectively. Results from Wilcoxon rank sum test showed that the median stigma score between the three groups was significant; KBTH and APH (p-value; 0.0258), KBTH and PLWHA (p-value; 0.00001), and APH and PLWHA (p-value; 0.0000). Age (<40 years), seizure frequency, ethnic group (Ewe and Guan), and being divorced showed high odds for perceived stigma among KBTH patients with epilepsy. Having tertiary education led to lower odds for perceived stigma in epilepsy for APH patients with epilepsy. CONCLUSION This study showed that epilepsy is associated with a high stigma perception. The perceived stigma was greater than stigma in PLWHAs in Accra. Stigma was affected by unemployment, ethnicity (Ewe and Guan), and uncontrolled seizures. Increasing age reduced perceived stigma and the management of patients with epilepsy in a psychiatric facility might have impacted negatively on the perceived stigma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Perceived epilepsy stigma and reduced social well-being are prevalent sources of distress in people with epilepsy (PWE). Yet, research on patient-level correlates of these difficulties is lacking, especially among underserved groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS Racially/ethnically diverse adults with intractable seizures (N=60, 62% female; 79% Black, 20% Hispanic/Latino, 8% White) completed validated measures of personality (NEO Five Factor Inventory, NEO-FFI-3), perceived epilepsy stigma (Epilepsy Stigma Scale, ESS), and quality of life (Quality of Life Inventory in Epilepsy, QOLIE-89). Controlling for covariates, ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression evaluated the total, direct, and indirect effects of NEO-FFI-3 neuroticism and extraversion scores on epilepsy-related social well-being (i.e., combination of QOLIE-89 social isolation and work/driving/social function subscales, α=0.87), mediated through perceived stigma. RESULTS In separate models, higher levels of neuroticism (N) and lower levels of extraversion (E) were significantly and independently associated with greater perceived stigma (N path a=0.71, p=0.005; E path a=-1.10, p<0.005). Stigma, in turn, was significantly and independently associated with poorer social well-being (N path b=0.23, p<0.001; E path b=-0.23, p<0.001). Bias-corrected bootstrap confidence intervals (CIs) showed that neuroticism and extraversion were indirectly associated with social well-being through their respective associations with perceived stigma (N path ab=-0.16, 95% CIs [-0.347, -0.044]; E path ab=0.25, 95% CIs [0.076, 0.493]). CONCLUSION Higher neuroticism and lower extraversion covaried with stigma beliefs, and these may be markers of poor social outcomes in PWE. Mediation models suggest that targeting epilepsy stigma beliefs may be a particularly useful component to incorporate when developing interventions aimed at promoting social well-being in diverse PWE.

Abstract
We examined the effects of adjunctive lacosamide (LCM) on mood and quality of life (QOL) in adult patients with partial-onset seizures in a prospective, controlled, single-blind study. Patients in whom LCM was added to their AED regimen for clinical indications comprised the LCM group (n=18), while the control group (n=32) comprised patients on ≥2 AEDs with anticipated stable dosing for the duration of the study. Profile of Mood States (POMS) and QOLIE-89 were used to assess mood and QOL at enrollment and 12-16weeks later. Adherence to LCM was measured electronically with the Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) and using a self-report measure. There were no significant between-group differences in age, AED load, side-effects (A-B Neurotoxicity Scale), MoCA mental status, or seizure-related factors. LCM adherence (measured by MEMS) was 70.7%. There was a significant decrease in negative mood states in the LCM group (estimated marginal mean at baseline=49.4, at follow-up=29.7; p=0.02), after controlling for seizure freedom. Based on previously reported benchmarks, clinically significant change on the POMS occurred in 7 (38%) LCM patients. The effect of LCM on the overall QOL was not significant (p=0.078). Correlation between POMS Total Mood Distress and Emotional-Wellbeing on the QOLIE-89 was significant (r=-0.783; p=0.01). These results suggest that LCM may have a favorable impact on mood.

Abstract
Stigma impacts >50% of persons with epilepsy (PWE) and is a key factory in quality of life. Stigma can be both enacted (external factors) and felt (internal factors). In this article, felt/perceived stigma is more broadly defined as a combination of internal factors and perceptions of external factors. Secondary perceived stigma is felt/perceived stigma by a third party. A key, but often underappreciated, consideration in felt/perceived stigma may occur when a seemingly innocuous statement by a speaker is perceived as stigmatizing by the PWE and/or even by an unintended third party. This autobiographic short report addresses secondary perceived stigma in a social setting, the theater.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to assess the differences in health-related quality of life in groups of men and women suffering with drug-resistant epilepsy and to determine which factors influence quality of life. METHODS The examined group consisted of 64 subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy - 31 men and 33 women. The mean duration of epilepsy was 17.56±8.92 and 19±9.56years, respectively. The following diagnostic tools were used: QOLIE-31-P, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - Revised (WAIS-R (PL)), and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD). RESULTS Scores in QOLIE-31-P did not differ significantly between groups of men and women with drug-resistant epilepsy; however, a more detailed analysis revealed certain disparities. Multiple regression analyses indicated that some distinct factors were associated with quality of life in each sex. In the group of women, there were no significant predictors of their quality of life. Among the group of men, depression intensity was the only statistically significant QoL predictor, explaining 16% of the variance (adjusted R(2)=0.16, F(6, 24)=19.7, p<0.01). Moreover, patients with depression had lowered scores in the Emotional Well-Being and Energy/Fatigue subscales, regardless of the sex. CONCLUSION The study revealed that, despite similar scores in QOLIE-31-P, specific factors may differentially affect the quality of life of men and women with drug-resistant epilepsy in Poland. Nevertheless, replication of these results with a larger number of participants is needed for a more definitive conclusion.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess eight factors considered important for quality of life in persons with epilepsy in order to determine which of these components affect quality of life in adults with epilepsy in Taiwan. METHODS A cross-sectional, correlational study using structured questionnaires assessed 260 patients with epilepsy purposively sampled from a medical center in Northern Taiwan. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was evaluated with the Quality of Life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) questionnaire. Data also included personal and health-related characteristics, knowledge of epilepsy, efficacy in the self-management of epilepsy, and social support. RESULTS Scores for the QOLIE-31 were correlated with the following factors: (1) demographic characteristics of age, gender, and income; (2) sleep quality; (3) symptoms of anxiety and depression; (4) epilepsy-specific variables: seizure frequency; types, number, and frequency of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs); and adverse events of AEDs; and (5) social support. Stepwise regression analysis showed that seven factors were predictive for quality of life: anxiety, depression, adverse events of AEDs, social support, seizure frequency of at least once in three months, household income of NT$ 40,001-100,000, and male gender. These factors accounted for 58.2% of the variance of quality of life. SIGNIFICANCE Our study assessed multiple factors in an examination of relationships and predictive factors for quality of life in adults with epilepsy in Taiwan. Knowledge of these contributing factors can assist health-care providers when evaluating patients with epilepsy to help target interventions for improving quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study is to determine whether certain demographic, clinical, and psychosocial traits are associated with higher levels of felt stigma among persons with epilepsy (PWE) patients followed at a level 4 epilepsy center. METHODS We performed a direct survey of 182 consenting patients that included the Epilepsy Stigma Scale. RESULTS On univariate analysis, higher levels of perceived stigma were associated with age, marital status, race, driving, work status, seizure etiology, Quality of Life in Epilepsy-10 (QOLIE-10) scores, and health literacy. Among coping reactions, the use of denial, behavioral disengagement and venting were also associated with higher degrees of felt stigma. Using multiple linear regression, being single, poorer QOLIE-10 scores, difficulties understanding written information, and the use of behavioral disengagement were independently associated with poorer scores on the Epilepsy Stigma Scale. CONCLUSION Our study paints a compelling profile of a PWE who has greater perceived stigma. Programs that increase the level of social support, improve health literacy, and enhance quality of life may also help decrease the amount of felt stigma among PWE.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study investigated how marital status relates to clinical aspects and quality of life (QOL) in patients with epilepsy (PWE). METHOD The clinical data and Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31) scores of 252 PWE were regressed against their marital status with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). RESULTS Logistic regression for single and married PWE revealed that singles had more abnormalities in the neurological examination (p = 0.029) and earlier seizure onset (p < 0.001), while for married and divorced PWE revealed the latter more psychiatric comorbidities (p = 0.002) and longer disease duration (p = 0.011). Regarding QOL score, linear regression showed that psychiatric comorbidity was the only factor (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The marital status of PWE is negatively associated with clinical aspects of epilepsy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the applicability of applying an online tool to determine the appropriateness of referral for an epilepsy surgical evaluation and to determine whether appropriateness scores are concordant with the clinical judgment of epilepsy specialists. METHODS We prospectively applied the tool in 107 consecutive patients with focal epilepsy seen in an epilepsy outpatient clinic. Variables collected included seizure type, epilepsy duration, seizure frequency, seizure severity, number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) tried, AED-related side effects, and the results of investigations. Appropriateness ratings were then compared with retrospectively collected information concerning whether a surgical evaluation had been considered. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients (36.4%) were rated as appropriate for an epilepsy surgical evaluation, all of whom had adequately tried 2 or more appropriate AEDs. The majority of patients (84.6%) rated as appropriate had previously been considered or referred for an epilepsy surgical evaluation. Tool feasibility of use was high, with the exception of assessing whether previous AED trials had been adequate and discrepancies between physician and patient reports of AED side effects. CONCLUSIONS Our evidence-based, online clinical decision tool is easily applied and able to determine whether patients with focal epilepsy are appropriate for a surgical evaluation. Future validation of this tool will require application in clinical practice and assessment of potential improvements in patient outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychiatric comorbidities are frequent in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and symptoms of these comorbidities may be related to epilepsy activity. Here we evaluated interictal EEG activity in TLE patients with or without psychiatric comorbidities. METHODS A cohort study of 78 patients with TLE, with evaluation of wake/sleep interictal scalp EEG. All subjects were submitted to a psychiatric structured clinical interview (SCID) for the diagnosis of lifetime psychiatric comorbidities. Three major diagnostic categories were studied: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and psychosis. We then evaluated differences in interictal EEG activity between patients with and without these psychiatric comorbidities. RESULTS Infrequent EEG interictal spikes, defined as less than one event per minute, were significantly associated with mood disorders in TLE (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS Low intensity seizure disorder has been associated with a decrease in interictal EEG discharges and with an increase in psychiatric symptoms in TLE, a phenomenon known as forced normalization. In our study, we observed a low interictal spike frequency on EEG in TLE patients with mood disorders. SIGNIFICANCE A low spike index might be a neurophysiological marker for depression in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at finding determinants of quality of life in people with epilepsy (PWE) living in Belgrade, Serbia. METHOD In this study, we recruited consecutive adults with epilepsy attending our outpatient department. Adult patients (age range: 18-65years) of normal intelligence and without any progressive neurological disease or psychiatric disorder were included in the study. They completed the following questionnaires: QOLIE-31 Inventory (Serbian version), Beck's Depression Inventory-II, Beck's Anxiety Inventory, Symptom Check List-90, and Neurotoxicity Scale-II. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the predictive effects of some factors on QOLIE-31 Inventory. RESULTS The mean QOLIE-31 score of 203 patients who completed the questionnaires was 70.64±17.74. Sociodemographic factors (age, sex, education, and employment) did not significantly predict QOLIE-31 score. Significant determinants of quality of life were clinical characteristics - seizure severity and etiology of epilepsy - accounting for 30.9% of the variance, depressive and anxiety symptoms accounting for 42.8% of the variance, and cognitive effects of antiepileptic drugs, accounting for 1.5% above other variables. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that seizure severity and etiology of epilepsy, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and cognitive adverse medication effects are main determinants of quality of life in this population of PWE.
