Abstract
PURPOSE This study was conducted to determine stigma and attitudes in the relatives of patients with epilepsy and the factors affecting them. METHODS This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 173 relatives of patients with epilepsy who were admitted to the neurology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Van Province, eastern Turkey, between April and December 2021. Individual information forms, the Epilepsy Stigma Scale Patient's Relative, and the Epilepsy Attitude Scale were used to collect the data. RESULTS The mean stigma score was 54.58 (standard deviation [SD] = 10.96), and the mean attitude score was 53.05 (SD = 8.14). A negative and significant correlation was found between stigma score and attitude score (r = -0.457, p < 0.001). It was found that stigma and attitude scores differed significantly in terms of education, hiding epilepsy, and the idea that epilepsy is related to spiritual thoughts (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION As a result of this study, it was found that the relatives of patients with epilepsy were generally moderately stigmatized (64.8 %) and had moderate attitudes toward epilepsy. As the stigma increased in the participants, it was determined that they showed more negative attitudes toward epilepsy. The results indicated that relatives of patients with epilepsy who had one or more seizures per month experienced more stigma, and relatives of patients with epilepsy who did not take their medication regularly exhibited a more negative attitude toward epilepsy.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of pathological cardiac hypertrophy. Transmembrane protein 117 modulate mitochondrial membrane potential that may be involved in the regulation of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function. However, its role in the development of angiotensin II (Ang-II)-induced cardiac hypertrophy is unclear. Cardiac-specific TMEM117-knockout and control mice were subjected to cardiac hypertrophy induced by Ang-II infusion. Small-interfering RNAs against TMEM117 or adenovirus-based plasmids encoding TMEM117 were delivered into left ventricles of mice or incubated with neonatal murine ventricular myocytes (NMVMs) before Ang-II stimulation. We found that TMEM117 was upregulated in hypertrophic hearts and cardiomyocytes and TMEM117 deficiency attenuated Ang-II-induced cardiac hypertrophy in vivo. Consistently, the in vitro data demonstrated that Ang-II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy significantly alleviated by TMEM117 knockdown. Conversely, overexpression of TMEM117 exacerbated cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction. An Ang II-induced increase in cardiac (cardiomyocyte) oxidative stress was alleviated by cardiac-specific knockout (knockdown) of TMEM117 and was worsened by TMEM117 supplementation (overexpression). In addition, TMEM117 knockout decreased endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by Ang-II, which was reversed by TMEM117 supplementation. Furthermore, TMEM117 deficiency mitigated mitochondrial injury in hypertrophic hearts and cardiomyocyte, which was abolished by TMEM117 supplementation (overexpression). Taken together, these findings suggest that upregulation of TMEM117 contributes to the development of cardiac hypertrophy and the downregulation of TMEM117 may be a new therapeutic strategy for the prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy.

Abstract
Background Epilepsy is a prevalent pediatric neurological disorder, with widespread implications globally. Parents' knowledge and attitudes toward their epileptic children play a pivotal role in the well-being and management of the condition. Despite its prevalence in Saudi Arabia, awareness and perceptions vary across communities. Objective This study aimed to assess parents' knowledge, awareness, and attitudes toward children with epilepsy in the Al Baha region of Saudi Arabia. Methods A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in the Al Baha region from November 2022 to January 2023. An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was distributed among 390 parents, targeting those aged 18-60 years. Results While the majority recognized that epilepsy is not contagious, misconceptions persisted. Nearly 67.7% of families lacked clarity on the causes of epilepsy. Most believed in the potential curability of epilepsy, favoring medication as the primary treatment. A significant association was identified between having an epileptic child and knowledge of seizure-first aid. The majority held an optimistic view regarding the academic and extracurricular achievements of epileptic children. Conclusion The study highlights a mix of informed and misinformed beliefs among parents in the Al Baha region. While many perspectives were encouraging, certain misconceptions underlined the need for continued awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. Addressing these gaps is essential for providing comprehensive care and inclusion of children with epilepsy in the community.

Abstract
Background Epilepsy is a chronic disorder with recurrent unprovoked seizures which can affect children at any age. A child's quality of life (QOL) is significantly impacted by an epilepsy diagnosis throughout their formative years. Adjustment and QOL for the child and family are highly correlated with parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding epilepsy. Objectives Determining the association between parental KAP and the QOL of children with epilepsy (CWE) and to study the association between them. Materials and Methods Using convenience sampling procedure, 30 CWE between the ages of 6 and 14-of either sex-and their 30 parents made up the sample. The knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) tool, which was given to parents, and the Quality of Life in Childhood Epilepsy Questionnaire-55 (QOLCE-55), which was given to CWE, were used to gather the data. Frequency distribution, percentage, and correlation coefficient tests were used to assess the measures. Results There were statistically significant relationships between the QOL and KAP domains and parental education, domicile, and socioeconomic position. The cognitive, emotional, and social domains of QOL were adversely connected with the knowledge domain in KAP, but the physical domain was positively correlated. Parents' behavior and physical QOL were found to be negatively correlated. Conclusion Although educated parents had sufficient information and a positive outlook, there was a discrepancy between recommended and actual practice, and KAP has an impact on the QOL of CWE. Parental education initiatives may significantly improve understanding and promote healthy behaviors.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was conducted for the purposes of developing the Mobile Epilepsy Education Package (MEEP) for mothers who have children with epilepsy, and evaluating the efficacy of such a package. DESIGN AND METHODS The research consisted of a randomized, controlled experimental study. DISCERN measuring tool was used to evaluate the content of MEEP. The evaluation of the package was conducted with a total of 60 mothers-30 participants in the intervention group and 30 controls. This study was conducted in the Pediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic of a hospital with mothers who had children with epilepsy, ages 3-6. A Description Form, the Epilepsy Knowledge Scale for Parents, and Parental Anxiety over Seizures Scale were used in the data collection. RESULTS The general quality evaluation of MEEP according to the experts was rated 70.35 ± 6.20, with interrater agreement at a good level. Knowledge and anxiety scores were similar in the groups prior to the mobile application. Following the application, a significant increase was seen in the level of knowledge about epilepsy among the intervention group mothers (p < .001), while a significant decrease was observed in anxiety over seizures (p = .009). CONCLUSIONS MEEP, which was developed to evaluate mothers' levels of knowledge about epilepsy and their state of anxiety over seizures, resulted in an increase in knowledge and reduced anxiety. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS A simple-to-use, easy-to-access and low-cost mobile application has been developed that facilitates epilepsy diagnosis, follow-up and treatment, increases mothers' knowledge levels, and reduces anxiety levels.

Abstract
This review aimed to synthesize the minimal existing literature on the impact of perceived stigma on self-disclosure patterns among children and youth with epilepsy (YWE). Initial literature searches were conducted in PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed using search terms focused on epilepsy, pediatrics, disclosure, and/or stigma. Articles were included if they were original human research articles published in peer-reviewed journals that were accessible in English through Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Pratt Library and fit study aims. Thirteen articles, which primarily used qualitative self-report methodologies, fit the study's inclusion criteria. YWE report greater perceived stigma and lower illness disclosure compared to youth with other chronic health conditions. Across studies, perceived stigma was consistently identified as a barrier to YWE disclosing their epilepsy diagnosis. Consequences of perceived stigma included lower self-esteem, poorer perceived competency, lack of self-confidence, social withdrawal, and lower quality of life. YWE's reluctance to disclose epilepsy was associated with worry about differential treatment, negative impact on close relationships, negative impact on others' perceptions, and negative self-perceptions. While WHO and ILAE have identified stigma as contributing to higher disease burden in people with epilepsy and have highlighted the importance of prioritizing social policy focused on decreasing epilepsy-related stigma, progress has been incremental and much work remains. Future research is needed to understand socio-cultural factors perpetuating stigma among YWE in order to further develop, evaluate, and disseminate evidence-based clinical and education programming to combat epilepsy-related stigma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Knowledge about epilepsy and attitudes toward people with epilepsy can influence measures taken to manage epilepsy and seizures. The support and understanding of parents of children with epilepsy are invaluable in helping develop ordinary living skills. To determine the educational needs of parents of children with epilepsy, their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors should be evaluated. Therefore, we interviewed parents who had a child with epilepsy who was treated at the pediatric neurology clinic of a university hospital. We aimed to evaluate parents' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward children with epilepsy to determine their educational needs. METHODS This descriptive study included 221 parents of children with epilepsy who applied to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Medical Faculty Hospital. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Pearson and exact chi-square tests were used for analysis. RESULTS In the present study, 221 parents were interviewed. A total of 66.5% of the participants were at the primary education level. The rate of participants who preferred healthcare professionals as a source of information about epilepsy was 78.9%. Forty-eight percent of the parents did not see consanguineous marriage as a reason. While some parents stated that epilepsy was supernatural, others had no idea whether it was contagious or not, and 46.2% of the participants stated that epilepsy is not a hereditary disease. The rate of those who tried nonphysician treatment was 16.3%. The rate of participants who thought that drinking alcohol would not trigger seizures was 86.9%. It was determined that 30.8% of the participants pulled the patient's tongue out during seizures. 16.7% of participants thought that patients with epilepsy were disabled. 50.7% of the participants stated that their children with epilepsy could do any profession. CONCLUSIONS Our study documented parents' lack of knowledge about epilepsy. Many parents have significant misunderstandings, negative attitudes, and parenting practices, and their knowledge and understanding of epilepsy needs to be improved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND First aid measures in cases of epileptic seizures are crucial. Misconceptions about seizure first-aid measures are probably common. Most of the previous data focused on teachers and healthcare providers. The objective of this study was to assess the awareness of seizure first-aid measures and their associated factors in a community sample in Saudi Arabia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out using an online questionnaire between July 2020 and February 2021. Those who had never heard of epilepsy and healthcare workers were excluded. Overall and individual scores were calculated for first-aid measures during and after the seizures as well as calling the ambulance. RESULTS A total of 1542 participants were included in the study. The overall awareness score of seizure first-aid measures was 57.3%. The awareness of the need to call the ambulance in special circumstances was the highest individual score (78.3%), followed by measures after the seizure (54.2%), and finally measures during the seizure (48.4%). For the latter, the awareness of injury prevention measures was the highest (74.9%), while the awareness of treatment options was the lowest (12.2%). Overall awareness score was significantly higher in older age (p = 0.015), female gender (p < 0.001), divorced status (p = 0.014), knowing someone with epilepsy (p < 0.001), attending a course or workshop about seizure first-aid (p < 0.001), watching a video on seizure first-aid on any platform (p < 0.001), and having basic life support training (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The awareness of seizure first-aid measures is still inadequate among the public in Saudi Arabia. The current finding underscores the importance of simulation videos on social media and/or field-training campaigns to improve the public awareness of seizure first-aid measures.

Abstract
We compared knowledge, attitude, behavior, belief and seizure recognition among CG-A and CG-C. Overall performance of caregivers of adults and children in tested domains was good. Knowledge-behavior, knowledge-faith and knowledge-seizure recognition gaps existed in CG-A. Lack of formal education in CG-A lead to inadequate factual knowledge and the knowledge gaps. CG-A need focused education to improve seizure recognition and response and dispel epilepsy myths.
Caregivers of adults (CG-A) and caregivers of children (CG-C) may differ in their knowledge, attitude and behavior and hence their education requirements during epilepsy counseling could vary. This study compares the current knowledge, attitudes, behavior during a seizure, presence of myths surrounding epilepsy and ability to recognize seizures among a sample of CG-A and CG-C. Caregivers of children and adult patients with minimum 6 months history of epilepsy were enrolled. Information was collected using a questionnaire about clinical and demographic details and five domains (KAP-plus); knowledge, attitude, behavior, presence of myths and a video data for identification of focal impaired awareness seizures (FIAS) and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS). There were 132 CG-A and 127 CG-C. CG-C were younger and better educated compared to CG-A (formal education of 64.6% vs 44.7% p = 0.001). CG-A and CG-C were comparable in the knowledge and attitude domains. CG-A scored less than CG-C in the domains of behavior (15.5 vs 16.8 p = <0.001), myths (15.4 vs 16.2 p = 0.002), video recognition of FIAS and GTCS (0.7 vs 0.94 p = 0.001) and KAP-plus score (22.9 vs 24.6 p = 0.017). The knowledge-behavior or knowing-doing gap, knowledge-faith gap and knowledge-recognition gaps existed more among CG-A compared to CG-C. Focused education strategies are required to bridge the gap among CG-A.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric consequences among parents of children with epilepsy. OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of PTSD, depression and anxiety in a sample of parents of children with epilepsy. METHODS A survey of 135 parents of children with epilepsy, treated in the pediatric neurology department at the Sfax Teaching Hospital in Tunisia, was conducted in the last quarter of 2019. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used to assess, respectively, PTSD, depression and anxiety in parents. Associations with clinical and demographic variables with PTSD, depression and anxiety were evaluated in a logistic regression model. RESULTS Results revealed PTSD rates of 20.7%, depression rates of 28.9% and anxiety rates of 55.6%. The main factors associated with PTSD on multivariable analysis were female gender (P=0.026, ORa=13.1), insufficient involvement of partner in disease management (P<10-3, ORa=12.1) and duration of epilepsy less than 12 months (P=0.001; ORa=0.1). Female gender (P=0.006, ORa=18.1) and restriction of social life (P=0.006, ORa=4.1) were associated with depression. Factors associated with anxiety were insufficient involvement of partner in disease management (P=0.03, ORa=4.6) and PTSD (P=0.005, ORa=9.1). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that clinicians should pay more attention to psychological health of parents of children with epilepsy and help healthcare providers to develop preventive and intervention strategies for parents of such children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of caregivers of children with epilepsy. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 107 consecutive caregivers of children diagnosed with epilepsy, attending the neurology outpatient clinic in a Pediatric tertiary university hospital, in Khartoum, Sudan for regular check-up. Data were obtained by an interviewer through a structured questionnaire, while clinical parameters of children with epilepsy were taken from medical records. RESULTS Most respondents knew that epilepsy is not an infectious disease (92.5%), while the least proportion of caregivers (41.1%) knew that epilepsy did not emanate from a supernatural origin. The majority of caregivers were with the idea that epilepsy caused lost opportunities for study (66.4%) and that epilepsy was looked upon negatively by others (64.5%). Less than half (39.7%) of these caregivers rolled their child on to the side during a seizure, and more than a third (37.2%) admitted to sprinkling water over the child during his/her seizure. Caregivers' of children with Generalized Tonic-Clonic (GTC) convulsions, reported significantly lower knowledge scores than caregivers whose children did not experience GTC seizures (p = 0.016). Caregivers of children with GTC seizures were more likely to believe epilepsy was for the most part hereditary (p = 0.006), and that children with epilepsy lost consciousness during a seizure (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that caregivers require periodic epilepsy-related educational programs. This study is an invaluable tool for tailoring the delivery of information and support resources for caregivers in our region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When youth with epilepsy and their parents have insufficient information about the disease, they are known to have more problems with disease management, and they show poor compliance. Providing accurate, reliable, and accessible information with no time and space limitations is extremely important for individuals with epilepsy as well as for their caregivers. AIM In this study, we aimed to evaluate the content, quality, usability, and efficacy of our web-based epilepsy education program (WEEP) that we developed for youth with epilepsy and their parents. METHODS The sample of this randomized controlled trail was composed of youth with epilepsy who were between the ages of 9 and 18 years and their parents who had applied to the Pediatric Neurology Unit of a tertiary healthcare hospital in Turkey between November 2017 and April 2018. This study was conducted in two stages: (1) the preparation phase, during which we developed a WEEP for epilepsy, and tested its content, quality, and usability; and (2) the implementation phase, during which we evaluated the efficacy of the website by assessing users' knowledge of epilepsy, seizure self-efficacy, attitudes, and e-health literacy. Before the implementation phase, data collection tools were used to test the prior knowledge of epilepsy of the participants and control groups. Next, the youth and their parents were asked to use the WEEP for 12 weeks, while a control group was not provided with additional education tools. Written consent was obtained from the participants prior to the study in addition to obtaining approval from the ethics committee and permission from the institution where the research was conducted. The data were finally analyzed using SAS 9.4 software. RESULTS During the preparation phase, the website was developed and tested for content, quality, and usability. The WEEP was graded 72.7 ± 3.4 points by experts, 92.4 ± 1.63 by youth with epilepsy, and 92.31 ± 1.94 by the parents. During the implementation phase, the efficacy of the web site was evaluated through the assessment of participants' scores. We found that the mean knowledge, seizure self-efficacy, attitude, and e-health literacy scores of youth with epilepsy in the experimental group had significantly increased after the WEEP (p < 0.05). An increase in the scores of knowledge, anxiety, self-management, and e-health literacy scale was also found among the parents in the intervention group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The content, quality, and usability of the WEEP were adequate and effective in improving knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, and e-health literacy of youth with epilepsy as well as those of their parents.

Abstract
AbstractThe objective of this study was to determine the quality-of-life (QoL) among children with epilepsy in comparison with a healthy control group. Participants included mothers of 206 children with epilepsy and of 211 healthy controls. The QoL was measured via cross-cultural adaptation of the Quality-of-Life in Children with Epilepsy Questionnaire, which was also modified for the control group. The mean (standard deviation) overall QoL score of children with epilepsy was lower than that of the healthy control group at: 74.3 (8.2) versus 87.9 (6.6), p < 0.001. In addition, all seven dimensions of QoL were lower among children with epilepsy compared with that of the healthy control group. The health-related QoL of children with epilepsy was lower than that of the healthy control group. Children experiencing seizures more frequently, experiencing side effects from antiepileptic drugs, having a history of hospitalization, and having poor school performance displayed lower scores in QoL, which may highlight the impact of the severity of the disease and proper management of seizures on the quality-of-life in children with epilepsy.

Abstract
Background Epilepsy is a chronic disease characterized by periodic seizures that result from abnormal integrated firing impulses in the brain. It is one of the most common neurological disorders. Over the past few years, there has been increasing awareness about the effect that having a child with epilepsy has on parents and the reciprocal impact of parental knowledge and attitudes regarding epilepsy on the affected child. Objective This study aimed to assess parental knowledge, attitudes, and behavior toward their epileptic children. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 by the Pediatric Neurology Department of King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A sample size of 115 of 332 parents who have a child diagnosed with epilepsy and aged 18 years or younger were recruited for this study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 21. Data analysis was performed using an independent t test, a chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance, and correlation analysis. Results A total of 115 participants answered the questionnaire; of these, 65 (56.5%) were men, with an average age of 40.3 years, and the mean age of the children was 9.0 years. Overall, 85 (85/115, 73.9%) children were taken care of by both of their parents. The mean parental knowledge score was 7.49 (SD 2.08) out of 12, and it was significantly related to the educational level of the parent (P=.004). The knowledge question that was most frequently answered incorrectly was “Diagnosis of epilepsy is usually made based on at least two unprovoked seizures.” As only 28.7% (33/115) of participants chose the correct answer, mean parental attitude score was 26.51 (SD 4.284) out of 35, and there was no significant relation with the educational level of parents (P=.13); however, it was negatively correlated with the child’s age (P=.045). Mean parental behavioral score was 23.35 (SD 4.121) out of 35, and there was no significant relation with the educational level of the parents (P=.24). The most negatively answered question for the behavior section was “I can leave my child without supervision,” with a mean score of 2.25 (SD 1.09) out of 5. Gender did not play a significant role in parental knowledge, attitudes, or behavior (P=.44, P=.77, and P=.99, respectively). Conclusions Parental knowledge in our sample still needs improvement. Therefore, more awareness campaigns should be made for the community and for the parents of affected children to create a supportive environment for the children and help them thrive and develop.

Abstract
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in the world. False knowledge and attitudes related to epilepsy both complicate the social lives of patients and adversely affect their academic development. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of the medical students about epilepsy. Seven hundred twenty-three students participated in the study. A questionnaire including demographic information and Epilepsy Knowledge and Attitude Scales was given to the students. The first 3 years students were accepted as preclinical group, and the last 3 years were accepted as clinical group. Previously, the rate of hearing about epilepsy was 87.8%, and the reading rate was 69%. Both hearing and reading rates were higher in the clinical group. The total knowledge score was higher in all groups who had heard and read about epilepsy, witness an epileptic seizure, and know someone with epilepsy. The total attitude score did not change with witness an epileptic seizure and know someone with epilepsy. Though total knowledge score was similar between genders, total attitude score was higher in males. Although the total knowledge score was higher in the clinical group, the total attitude score was similar.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An information technology (IT)-based epilepsy educational program, the Interactive Animated Epilepsy Education Programme (IAEEP), can potentially help improve awareness, knowledge, and attitude (AKA) of parents of children with epilepsy (CWE) enabling CWE to lead a normal life. Our study aimed to assess the following: i) baseline level of epilepsy AKA of Malaysian parents of CWE and explore potential characteristics associated with low levels of AKA; ii) effectiveness of the IAEEP in improving parental AKA, and whether these effects remained stable over time; and iii) effects of the IAEEP on parental mental state and perception of their child's quality of life. METHODS This prospective study includes parents of CWE aged 8-18 years old with no comorbidities. Epilepsy education was delivered using the IAEEP. Parents completed an AKA questionnaire before (time point 1 [TP1]), immediately after (TP2), and 4-6 months (TP3) after the provision of IAEEP. Parent proxy report of Health-Related Quality of Life Measurement for Children with Epilepsy (CHEQOL)-25 questionnaire and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS)-21 questionnaire was completed at TP1 and TP3. RESULTS A total of 78 parents participated in the study. At baseline (TP1), parental responses were rated as "moderate" for awareness domain, "high" for knowledge domain, "very positive" for attitude domain, and "good" for total AKA score domain. No epilepsy or parental characteristics were associated with the low baseline parental AKA levels. After IAEEP intervention, there was a significant increase in all AKA subdomain scores. Post-IAEEP, the AKA of parents were rated as "very high" for awareness domain, "very high" for knowledge domain, "very positive" for attitude domain, and "excellent" for total AKA domain at both TP2 and TP3. Parent proxy CHEQOL-25 report showed significant increments in interpersonal/social and secrecy scale scores between TP1 and TP3. There were no significant differences in the DASS-21 scores between TP1 and TP3. CONCLUSION The IAEEP is an effective epilepsy educational tool to increase the levels of AKA among parents of CWE. Following the use of the IAEEP, parents of CWE also reported an improvement of their child's quality of life in the interpersonal/social and epilepsy secrecy CHEQOL-25 domains. There was no impact on parental mental health following exposure to the IAEEP.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to identify the knowledge and attitudes of parents about epilepsy. METHODS Our study was conducted as a questionnaire study with 1200 parents. The demographic information of the participants, their answers to general questions about epilepsy, and their self-reported epilepsy knowledge scale and epilepsy attitude scale data were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 746 (62.2%) mothers and 454 (37.8%) fathers participated in the study. The mean age was 36.3 ± 9.2 years. The educational level was high school or higher in 65.3%. The mothers and the fathers had similar epilepsy knowledge levels and epilepsy attitude characteristics. The highest epilepsy knowledge level and the best attitudes about epilepsy according to the educational level was in the "university or higher" group. Moreover, a positive correlation was found between the epilepsy knowledge level and positive epilepsy attitudes of the parents. CONCLUSION A more positive attitude and better knowledge about epilepsy with increasing educational level indicate that negative attitudes are caused by lack of information. Positive attitudes in the society toward patients with epilepsy would be expected to increase by ensuring a sufficient level of knowledge about epilepsy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess knowledge, attitudes, and first-aid measures about epilepsy among primary school teachers. METHOD This cross-sectional study was conducted with participation of 342 primary school teachers during September 2016 to January 2017 in cities of Babol and Qaem-Shahr in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran. Primary schools were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through interviews using a structured questionnaire. The knowledge section included general knowledge, causes, symptoms, seizure triggers, first-aid measures, and recommended treatments. The Likert scale was used for the attitudes section. Answers about first-aid measures were categorized as helpful or harmful. RESULTS The level of total knowledge score of 25 (7.7%) teachers was very high, 140 (43.3%) high, 141 (43.8%) moderate, and 17 (5.2%) low. The mean score about general knowledge was as follows: 6.1 (1.9), range = 0-9; causes 6.3 (1.9), range = 0-10; symptoms of seizures 8.5 (2.5), range = 0-12; and first-aid measures 6.8 (2.0), range = 0-11. Some 83% knew not taking anticonvulsants regularly could trigger seizures, and all teachers said a person with epilepsy should go see a physician. Attitudes were generally positive except for marriage and having children. The level of first-aid measures score of 8 (7.2) teachers was very high, 79 (70.5) high, 25 (22.3) low. Teachers with teaching experience at special schools took more helpful measures CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of teachers about epilepsy was insufficient, attitudes toward people with epilepsy were generally positive, and first-aid measures at the last witnessed seizure were fairly helpful. Having teaching experience in special schools had a positive influence over knowledge and taking appropriate first-aid measure at time of the last witnessed seizure.

Abstract
Objective To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of adults on epilepsy in Erute South County, Lira District, Uganda. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural Erute South County. Two hundred seventeen of 220 randomly selected adults 18 years or older participated in the study. A standardized self-administered questionnaire (Attitudes towards persons with Epilepsy "ATPE") was used for data collection. Protocol approval was sought from International Health Sciences University, and informed consent was obtained from participants at all times. Results Two hundred seventeen of 220 invited community members completed the study. Females comprised the majority 51.6%.. Most of the respondents had a low level of knowledge on epilepsy. The mean ATPE scale knowledge score was 4.57 (standard deviation [SD] = 3.24) of a maximum score of 11. The male respondents almost had mean knowledge scores almost equal to their female counterparts (4.23, SD = 2.48; 4.51, SD = 2.54, respectively). Most respondents had negative attitudes toward epilepsy, with a mean ATPE attitude score of 73.2 (SD = 2.11) of a possible maximum score of 126. The mean attitude scores for the male and female respondents were 58.18 (SD = 4.23) and 86.62 (SD = 5.23), respectively. Most respondents had negative beliefs such as attributing epilepsy to supernatural spirits, heredity, and preference of traditional medicine and healers to conventional medicine as a treatment for epilepsy. A significant number of respondents expressed sympathetic feelings toward people living with epilepsy, specifically tolerance and kindness to those living with epilepsy. Significance Findings could benefit policymakers, the district health team, researchers, community members, affected families, and people with epilepsy in designing awareness strategies. Knowledge on epilepsy could improve the quality of life and care for people living with epilepsy, through reducing misconceptions and stigmatization in the communities where they live.
