Abstract
Retinoic acid is an active metabolite with significant physiological functions in human development, immunity, vision, and skin health. In recent years, research on retinoic acid in the field of kidney disorders has been increasing gradually. Yet, there is a lack of systematic bibliometric analysis of retinoic acid research in the kidney domain. This study included 1,368 articles published between 1998 and 2023 on treating kidney diseases with retinoic acid. Using the bibliometric analysis software VOSviewer and CiteSpace, we analyzed data on publication trends, contributing countries and institutions, journals and cocited journals, authors and cocited authors, cocited references, research hotspots, and frontiers. On the basis of the results of the bibliometric analysis, we identified the research efforts and their developmental trends, providing the groundwork for future research on retinoic acid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND M2-type macrophages are inflammation-suppressing cells that are differentiated after induction by cytokines such as IL-4 or IL-13, which play an important regulatory role in inflammation and influence the regression of inflammation-related diseases. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) has an important role in suppressing immune-mediated inflammatory responses but the effect and underlying mechanism of ATRA on the polarization of M2 macrophages remains unclear. METHODS Macrophages were isolated from peritoneal wash fluid, and IL-4 (20 ng/mL) was used to construct a m2-type macrophage polarization model. The model was incubated with different concentrations of ATRA (15 µg/ml, 30 µg/ml, 45 µg/ml) for 24 h, and pretreated macrophages with p38MAPKα inhibitor SB202190 (20 μM). MTT, Trypan blue staining, Annexin V-PE/7-AAD staining, flow cytometry, real-time PCR and western blotting were used to investigate the effect and mechanism of ATRA on the polarization of M2 macrophages. RESULTS Compared with the IL-4 group, the proportion of F4/80+CD206+ M2-type macrophages was significantly higher in the ATRA group (P < 0.01). mRNA and protein expression levels of Arg-1, IL-10 and TGF-β1 were as significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the ATRA group as phosphorylation levels of STAT6 and p38MAPK (P < 0.01). After pretreatment with the addition of the inhibitor SB202190, M2-type macrophages proportion and their associated factors expression were significantly (P < 0.01) reduced, as compared with those in the ATRA group, but they were comparable (P > 0.05) with the IL-4 group. CONCLUSION The combination of ATRA and IL-4 activated the p38MAPK/STAT6-signaling pathway to promote polarization of M2 macrophages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays a central role in the metabolism and homeostasis of lipids. ApoE gene encodes three major isoforms: ε2, ε3 a nd ε4 forming six phenotypes: E2E2, E2E3, E2E4, E3E3, E3E3 and E4E4. Disorders of the lipid metabolism and the homeostasis are frequently coexist in renal diseases. The association between gene polymorphisms of apoE and lipid metabolism were not consistent. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the association between gene polymorphisms of apoE and lipid metabolism in renal diseases. METHODS A pre-defined literatures search and selection of eligible relevant investigations were performed to extract and collect data from electronic databases. RESULTS Sixteen articles were enrolled for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphisms and lipid metabolism. Subjects with E3E4 had a higher total cholesterol (TC) than those with E3E3, and subjects with E2E3 had a lower TC than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε2, had a lower TC than those with ε3 or ε4, and subjects with ε4 had a higher TC than those with, ε3. Subjects with E2E2, E2E3 or E4E4 had a higher triglyceride (TG) than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε4 had a higher TG than those with ε3. Subjects with ε2, had a higher level of TG than those with non-ε2. Subjects with E3E4 had a slightly lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) than those with E3E3. E3E4 appeared to be associated with lower levels of HDL. Subjects with E2E2, E2E3 had a notably lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε2, had a lower LDL than those with ε3 or ε4 ApoE gene polymorphisms were not associated with very low-density lipoprotein, and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)]. Subjects with E2E3 or E2E4 had higher apoE levels than those with E3E3, and subjects with E4E4 had lower apoE levels than those with E3E3. CONCLUSION ApoE gene polymorphisms are associated with the expression of TC, TG HDL, LDL, Lp(a) or apoE.

Abstract
The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway is an important regulatory pathway in renal fibrosis and is abnormally activated in glomerulosclerosis. Quercetin is a common Chinese herbal medicine and has been reported to inhibit TGF-β signaling pathway activation. In the present study a glomerulosclerosis rat model was constructed and mice were treated with different concentrations of quercetin. Biochemical parameters, pathological indices and expression levels of TGF-β signaling pathway-associated proteins were detected using immunohistochemistry and western blotting. It was demonstrated that quercetin significantly improved physiological indices and altered the expression levels of TGF-β signaling pathway-associated proteins in rats with glomerulosclerosis. In conclusion, quercetin can regulate the TGF-β signaling pathway and reduce the progression of glomerulosclerosis.

Abstract
Objective: In this research, we explored the molecular mechanism of proteinuria in glomerulosclerosis rats and the protective effects of ATRA. Methods: This research set up three groups: SHO group, GS group, and ATRA group (15 mg/(kg d), Sigma, St. Louis, MO). The serum creatinine (Scr), urea nitrogen (BUN), and 24-h proteinuria were detected 12 weeks after administration of ATRA. The pathological and ultrastructure changes were observed under light microscope and transmission electron microscope. The protein expression of TGF-β1 and Col-IV in glomerulus was detected by immunohitochemistry method. The mRNA and the protein expression of glomerular TRPC6 were detected by RT-PCR and Western blot. Results: In the rat model of GS, the expressions of TRPC6 were significantly elevated compared with the normal rat group; however, the use of ATRA down-regulated the expression of TRPC6 in the glomeruli and attenuated glomerulosclerosis and proteinuria. Scr and BUN were also improved by the treatment of ATRA. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that ATRA could ameliorate glomerulosclerosis and proteinuria in GS, which may be related to suppressed expression of TRPC6.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is regarded as one of the major plasma lipoproteins, and it plays an important role in the transport and metabolism of lipids. apoE can be found in multiple tissues, such as liver, kidney, jejunum, urinary bladder, ileum, colon, brain, adrenal glands, lung, ovary, spleen, pancreas, and testis, etc. As a secreted protein, it plays an important role in the systemic lipoprotein metabolism and vascular wall homeostasis and in the pathogenesis of renal diseases. apoE-knockout (apoE(-/-)) mice is a classic model of atherosclerosis and renal diseases. However, no review summed up the signaling pathway factors expression in renal tissue of apoE-knockout mice. The literatures were searched extensively and this review was performed to review the signaling pathway factors expression in renal tissue of apoE-knockout mice.

Abstract
All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), an active metabolite of vitamin A, exerts various effects on physiological processes such as cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis and inflammation. LMX1B, a developmental LIM-homeodomain transcription factor, is widely expressed in vertebrate embryos, and it takes part in the development of diverse structures such as limbs, kidneys, eyes, brains, etc. Renal tubular epithelial cell culture was performed, and mRNA and protein expression of some factors were detected. We recently demonstrated that ATRA up-regulated the LMX1B, and down-regulated the transforming growth factor-β1, collagen IV and fibronectin in a hypoxia/reoxygenation (H-R) injury system in renal tubular epithelial cells (RTEC). In conclusion, ATRA acts as a positive regulator of LMX1B in H-R RTEC.

Abstract
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorγ (PPARγ) can regulate the process of cell apoptosis and is related to the progression of renal disorders. Retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) is one of the nuclear receptors involved in a variety of kidney diseases. Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is a common denominator of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study investigated whether a potential signaling pathway existed between PPARγ and RARα in RIF rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). The rats were randomly divided into four groups: a model group subjected to UUO (GU), and three other groups treated with rosiglitazone sodium (GRS), GW9662 and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), n = 40, respectively. Renal tissues were collected two and four weeks after post-surgery. The relevant indicators were detected. In comparison with the GU group, the expressions of PPARγ and RARα (protein and mRNA) were increased in the GRS group, and decreased in the GW9662 group (all p < 0.01). The RIF index, mRNA and protein expression of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and the protein expressions of collagen-IV (Col-IV) and fibronectin (FN) in the GRS group were more markedly reduced than those in the GU group; their levels in the GW9662 group were elevated (all p < 0.01). PPARγ or RARα was negatively correlated to the RIF index, TGF-β1, Col-IV and FN. PPARγ was positively correlated with RARα (all p < 0.01). In conclusion, PPARγ agonist can elevate the expression of PPARγ or RARα in RIF rats. There might be a potential signaling pathway between PPARγ and RARα in RIF disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) exerts various effects on physiological processes such as cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis and inflammation. Prohibitins (PHB), including prohibitin 1 (PHB1) and prohibitin 2 (PHB2), are evolutionary conserved and pleiotropic proteins implicated in various cellular functions, including proliferation, tumor suppression, apoptosis, transcription, and mitochondrial protein folding. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays a pivotal role in the regulation of blood pressure and volume homeostasis. All these factors and systems have been implicated in renal interstitial fibrosis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ATRA treatment on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and expression of prohibitins to further understand its role in the processes leading to renal interstitial fibrosis. METHODS The hypoxic and oxidative stress conditions in obstructive renal disease were simulated in a hypoxia/reoxygenation model with renal tubular epithelial cells (RTEC) as a model system. Subsequently, the effect of ATRA on mRNA and protein expression levels was determined and correlations were established between factors involved in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the prohibitins, cellular redox status, renal interstitial fibrosis and ATRA treatment. RESULTS Correlation analysis showed that both PHB1 and PHB2 protein levels were negatively correlated with angiotensin I, ACE1, angiotensin II, TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN, ROS, and MDA (PHB1: r = -0.792, -0.834, -0.805, -0.795, -0.778, -0.798, -0.751, -0.682; PHB2: r = -0.872, -0.799, -0.838, -0.773, -0.769, -0.841, -0.794, -0.826; each p < 0.05), but positively correlated with ACE2, SOD, and GSH (PHB1: r = 0.796, 0.879, 0.824; PHB2: r = 0.785, 0.914, 0.849; each p < 0.05). ACE1 was positively correlated with angiotensin I, angiotensin II, TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN, ROS, and MDA, and negatively correlated with ACE2, SOD, and GSH (each p < 0.05). ACE2 was negatively correlated with ACE1, angiotensin I, angiotensin II, TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN, ROS, and MDA, and positively correlated with SOD and GSH (each p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results suggest that ATRA acts as a positive regulator of PHB1, PHB2 and ACE2, and as a negative regulator of ACE1, angiotensin I, and angiotensin II in a RTEC model system under hypoxia/reoxygenation conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common and aggressive cancers worldwide, and the pathogenesis is complicated at present. There iare few effective therapeutic measures, and novel therapeutic strategies are urgently required to improve clinical outcome. Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb) is reported to have an anti-cancer activity. OBJECTIVES To explore the effect of EGb on expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) and glutathione S-transferase Pi (GST-Pi) in the pathogenesis of HCC. METHODS 120 Wistar rats were divided into three groups at random: normal control group (control group), HCC risk group without treatment (HCC risk group), HCC risk group treated with EGb (EGb group); n=40, respectively. The HCC risk in rat was induced by aflatoxin B1 injection. At the end of 13-week, 33-week, 53-week and 73-week, 10 rats in each group were killed and the relevant samples were collected. RESULTS The mRNA and protein expressions of Cox-2 and GST-Pi were measured by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemical analysis and western-blot. When compared with those in the control group in 73-week, the mRNA and protein expressions of GST-Pi in EGb group were weaker than those in HCC risk group in 73-week. However, the mRNA and protein expressions of Cox-2 in HCC risk group were increased than that of control group, and there was no statistical difference for mRNA and protein expressions of Cox-2 between HCC risk group and EGb group. CONCLUSION EGb can regulate the expression of GST-Pi, but it does not seem to have an effect on Cox-2 expression in the liver of HCC risk rats.

Abstract
Paired box gene 2 (PAX2) can regulate tissue development and cellular differentiation, and it is associated with renal diseases. CD2-associated protein (CD2AP) is an adaptor protein involving in a variety of physiological and disease processes. Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is a hallmark of common progressive chronic diseases which lead to renal failure. This study was performed to investigate whether there was a potential signal pathway between PAX2 and CD2AP in RIF rats induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Eighty Wistar male rats were divided into two groups randomly: sham operation group (SHO) and model group subjected to UUO (GU), n = 40. The model was established by left ureteral ligation. Renal tissues were collected at 14 d and 28 d after surgery. RIF index, cell apoptosis index, protein expression of PAX2, CD2AP, transforming growth factor-βl (TGF-β1), collagen-IV (Col-IV), fibronectin (FN) in renal interstitium and renal tissue, and mRNA expression of PAX2, CD2AP, and TGF-β1 in renal tissue were detected. Compared with that in the SHO group, the PAX2 and CD2AP expressions (mRNA and protein) were significantly increased (p < 0.01). Protein expressions of TGF-β1, Col-IV, and FN, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index in the GU group were markedly elevated than those in the SHO group (all p < 0.01). PAX2 or CD2AP was positively correlated with TGF-β1, Col-IV, and FN, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, PAX2 was positively correlated with CD2AP (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the expression of PAX2 or CD2AP was increased in RIF rats, and PAX2 was positively correlated with CD2AP. There might be a potential signaling pathway between PAX2 and CD2AP in RIF disease. Further research is needed to determine the association in RIF disease.

Abstract
Retinoids comprise a group of compounds each composed of three basic parts: a trimethylated cyclohexene ring that is a bulky hydrophobic group, a conjugated tetraene side chain that functions as a linker unit, and a polar carbon-oxygen functional group. Biochemical conversion of carotenoid or other retinoids to retinoic acid (RA) is essential for normal regulation of a wide range of biological processes including development, differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Retinoids regulate various physiological outputs by binding to nuclear receptors called retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs), which themselves are DNA-binding transcriptional regulators. The functional response of RA and their receptors are modulated by a host of coactivators and corepressors. Retinoids are essential in the development and function of several organ systems; however, deregulated retinoid signaling can contribute to serious diseases. Several natural and synthetic retinoids are in clinical use or undergoing trials for treating specific diseases including cancer. In this review, we provide a broad overview on the importance of retinoids in development and various diseases, highlighting various retinoids in the drug discovery process, ranging all the way from retinoid chemistry to clinical uses and imaging.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the association between apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism and total cholesterol (TC) level in patients with kidney diseases.
METHODS: A predefined literature search was performed to collect data from the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library and eligible relevant studies reporting the association of apoE gene polymorphism with TC level in patients with kidney diseases were recruited for meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were identified for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphism and TC level in patients with kidney disease. Subjects with E3E4 had a higher TC than those with E3E3 [weighted mean differences (WMD) = 2.14, P = 0.01] and subjects with E2E3 had a lower TC than those with E3E3 (WMD = -1.93, P = 0.01). Subjects with ε2 had a lower TC than those with ε3 (ε2 vs ε3: WMD = -1.23, P = 0.002; ε2 vs ε4: WMD = -2.77, P ﹤0.0001) and subjects with 3 had a lower TC than those with 4 (WMD = -0.79, P = 0.03).
CONCLUSION: Subjects with apoE E3E4 and ε4 had a higher TC level and subjects with apoE E2E3 and ε2 had a higher TC level in patients with kidney disease. However, more well-designed studies should be performed in the future to confirm these findings.

Apolipoprotein E (apoE), one of the major plasma lipoproteins, plays a major role in the transport and metabolism of lipids by acting as a ligand. apoE gene contains three potential alleles: ϵ2, ϵ3 and ϵ4, forming six genotypes: E2E2, E2E3, E2E4, E3E3, E3E3 and E4E4. Association between apoE gene polymorphism and triglyceride (TG) is still controversial. There was not any meta-analysis to explore the association of apoE gene polymorphism with triglyceride level, and this meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the association between apoE gene polymorphism and triglyceride in patients with renal diseases. A predefined literature search and selection of eligible relevant studies were performed to collect data from electronic databases. Twenty-four articles were identified for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphism and triglyceride level. Subjects with E2E3 or E3E4 had a higher TG than those with E3E3. Subjects with ϵ4 had a higher TG than those with ϵ3. Subjects with ϵ2 had a slightly higher TG than those with ϵ3, although there was no statistical difference. Interestingly, subjects with ϵ4 had a much higher TG than those with ϵ2. In conclusion, E2E3, E3E4 or ϵ4 was associated with higher level of TG. However, more studies should be performed in the future.

Abstract
The roles of apolipoprotein E (apoE) in regulating plasma lipids and lipoproteins levels have been investigated for over several decades. However, in different tissues/cells, the role of apoE was different, such as that it was a risk factor for cancer, but some reports stated that apoE was a protective factor for renal diseases. At the moment, most of the studies find that apoE not only acts as a ligand for metabolism of lipids, but also plays as a factor to regulate lots of signaling pathways. There was rare review to sum up the signaling pathways for apoE, and there was also rare review to widely review the gene expression of apoE in glomerulus diseases. This review was performed to provide a relatively complete signaling pathways flowchart for apoE to the investigators who were interested in the roles of apoE in the pathogenesis of glomerulus diseases. In the past decades, some studies were also performed to explore the association of apoE gene expression with the risk of glomerulus diseases. However, the role of apoE in the pathogenesis of glomerulus diseases was controversial. Here, the signal transduction pathways of apoE and its role of gene expression in the pathogenesis of glomerulus diseases were reviewed.

Abstract
Fibrotic diseases, such as liver, pulmonary and renal fibrosis, are common end-stage conditions and represent a major global health problem. Furthermore, effective therapeutic measures are presently unavailable. Extracellular matrix accumulation is the most prominent characteristic in the pathogenesis of fibrotic disease. Retinoic acid, including all-trans retinoic acid, 9-cis and 13-cis retinoic acid, play important roles in various physiological processes, such as in embryonic development, reproduction, vision, cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis and inflammation. Present studies report that retinoic acid treatment may affect various processes involved in the onset and progression of fibrotic disease. However, the therapeutic effects of retinoic acid in such diseases remain controversial. Several reports indicate that retinoic acid positively affects the progression of fibrosis and alleviates the accumulation of the extracellular matrix, whereas other studies report the opposite; that retinoic acid exacerbates fibrosis and induces extracellular matrix accumulation. Signaling pathways might be an important influencing factor and differences in signaling events might be responsible for the contradictory role of retinoic acid in fibrotic diseases. Since there was no review available that investigated the role of retinoic acid and the signaling pathways involved, we retrospectively studied the literature and provide a comprehensive analysis of retinoic acid’s role in fibrotic diseases, and provide an overview of the signal transduction pathways involved in its pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a promising therapeutic agent, has been confirmed in animal experiments as playing a protective role against renal diseases. The renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of renal diseases, and RAAS inhibitors can prevent the progression of kidney diseases. In our previous study, we found that ATRA could play a protective role against glomerulosclerosis (GS) lesions in rats, and its effect was similar to RAAS inhibitors. However, whether ATRA treatment was associated with RAAS expression was not clear. METHODS Six-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: sham operation group (SHO), glomerulosclerosis model group without treatment (GS) and GS model group treated with ATRA (GA). At the end of 13 weeks, the relevant samples were collected and analyzed. RESULTS The mRNA and protein expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 1 (ACE1) in the GS group was notably higher when compared with the SHO group. However, mRNA and protein expression of ACE1 in the ATRA treatment group was markedly down-regulated when compared with the GS group. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression (mRNA or protein) in the GS group was reduced compared with that in the SHO group, and ATRA markedly increased the mRNA and protein expression of ACE2 compared with the GS group. The levels of protein expression of angiotensin I and angiotensin II were significantly up-regulated in the GS group compared with those in the SHO group, and ATRA reduced their expression in the GA group when compared with the GS group. CONCLUSION ATRA is associated with RAAS expression in GS rats, but its detailed mechanism needs to be elucidated by further research.

Abstract
The nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs) function as ligand-dependent transcriptional regulators and include three subtypes (RARα, RARβ and RARγ), which control the expression of specific gene subsets subsequent to ligand binding and to strictly controlled phosphorylation processes. Extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation is the most important characteristic of renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF). This study was performed to investigate whether RARs were associated with ECM accumulation in the progression of RIF in rats. Eighty Wistar male rats were divided into a sham operation group (SHO) and a model group subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction (GU) at random; n = 40, respectively. The RIF disease in GU group was established by left ureteral ligation. The renal tissues were collected at two weeks and four weeks after surgery. Protein expressions of RARα, RARβ, RARγ, transforming growth factor-βl (TGF-β1), collagen-IV (Col-IV) and fibronectin (FN) were detected using immunohistochemical analysis, and mRNA expressions of RARα, RARβ, RARγ and TGF-β1 in renal tissue were detected by real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. RIF index in renal interstitium was also calculated. When compared with those in SHO group, expressions of RARα and RARβ (protein and mRNA) were markedly reduced in the GU group (each p < 0.01). There was no marked difference for the expression of RARγ (protein and mRNA) between the SHO group and the GU group. The expressions of TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN and the RIF index in the GU group were markedly increased when compared with those in the SHO group (each p < 0.01). The protein expression of RARα/RARβ was negatively correlated with protein expression of TGF-β1, Col-IV or FN and the RIF index (all p < 0.01). In conclusion, the low expression of RARα/RARβ is associated with ECM accumulation in the progression of RIF in rats, suggesting that RARα/RARβ is a potentially therapeutic target for prevention of RIF.

Abstract
Prohibitin (PHB) and paired box 2 (PAX2) are associated with the development of renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF). This study was performed to investigate whether or not the PHB could regulate the PAX2 gene expression in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in rats. Eighty Wistar male rats were randomly divided into two groups: sham operation group (SHO) and model group subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction (GU), n = 40, respectively. The model was established by left ureteral ligation. Renal tissues were collected at 14-day and 28-day after surgery. RIF index, protein expression of PHB, PAX2, transforming growth factor-βl (TGF-β1), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen-IV (Col-IV), fibronectin (FN) or cleaved Caspase-3, and cell apoptosis index in renal interstitium, and mRNA expressions of PHB, PAX2 and TGF-β1 in renal tissue were detected. When compared with those in SHO group, expression of PHB (mRNA and protein) was significantly reduced, and expressions of PAX2 and TGF-β1 (protein and mRNA) were markedly increased in the GU group (each p < 0.01). Protein expressions of α-SMA, Col-IV, FN and cleaved Caspase-3, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index in the GU group were markedly increased when compared with those in the SHO group (each p < 0.01). The protein expression of PHB was negatively correlated with protein expression of PAX2, TGF-β1, α-SMA, Col-IV, FN or cleaved Caspase-3, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index (all p < 0.01). In conclusion, less expression of PHB is associated with increased PAX2 gene expression and RIF index in UUO rats, suggesting that increasing the PHB expression is a potential therapeutic target for prevention of RIF.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a major protein in the lipoprotein transport system that plays a well established role in lipids metabolism. apoE gene contains three potential alleles: ε2, ε3 and ε4, forming six genotypes: ε2ε2, ε2ε3, ε2ε4, ε3ε3, ε3ε3 and ε4ε4. The disorder of lipids metabolism is an important feature for nephrotic syndrome (NS). There were some investigations reporting that apoE and its gene polymorphism was associated with NS susceptibility. However, the mechanism was unclear and the association was still controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the association between apoE and NS risk in experimental and human studies. A predefined literature search and selection of eligible relevant studies were performed to collect the data from electronic databases, and eligible investigations were synthesized using meta-analysis method. In experimental models, twelve comparisons were included and a definitely positive association was observed between apoE protein expression and NS susceptibility (WMD = 1.88, P < 0.00001). However, in human, there was only two studies included for meta-analysis and a positive association between apoE protein expression and NS susceptibility wasn't found (OR = 108.10, P = 0.32). Interestingly, ε3ε3, ε3ε4, ε3 and ε4 were associated with NS susceptibility (ε3ε3: OR = 0.56, P = 0.002; ε3ε4: OR = 1.91, P = 0.02; ε3: OR = 0.61, P = 0.001; ε4: OR = 1.85, P = 0.009). In conclusion, the apoE gene expression was associated with the NS susceptibility in experimental studies, and the apoE ε3ε3, ε3ε4, ε3 and ε4 were associated with the onset of NS in human studies. This study supported that the disorder of apoE was one of the possible causes for NS risk. However, more studies should be performed to investigate this relationship in the future.

Abstract
AIMS Prohibitin (PHB), a ubiquitous protein, is involved in a variety of molecular functions. Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is a hallmark of common progressive chronic diseases that lead to renal failure. This study was performed to investigate whether PHB was associated with caspase-3 expression/cell apoptosis in RIF rats. METHODS Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups: sham operation group (SHO) and model group subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction (GU), n = 12, respectively. The model was established by left ureteral ligation. Renal tissues were collected at 14 days and 28 days after surgery. RIF index, cell apoptosis index, protein expression of PHB, transforming growth factor-βl (TGF-β1), collagen-IV (Col-IV), fibronectin (FN) or caspase-3 in renal interstitium, and mRNA expression of PHB in renal tissue were detected. RESULTS Compared with that in the SHO group, the PHB expression (mRNA and protein) was significantly reduced (P < 0.01). Protein expressions of TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN and caspase-3, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index in GU group were markedly elevated compared with those in SHO group (all P < 0.01). The protein expression of PHB had a negative correlation with the protein expression of TGF-β1, Col-IV, FN or caspase-3, and RIF index or cell apoptosis index (each P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Less expression of PHB is associated with increased caspase-3 expression/cell apoptosis in RIF rats. However, further research is needed to determine the effect of PHB on caspase-3 expression/cell apoptosis and to determine the potential of PHB as a therapeutic target.

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the association of prohibitin with renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) lesion and to explore the association of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) treatment with prohibitin expression in RIF rats. Rats were divided into three groups: the sham operation group (SHO), the model group subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), and the model group treated with ATRA (GA). Renal tissues were collected at 14 and 28 days after surgery, and the relevant indicators were detected. In comparison with the SHO group, the RIF index in the UUO group was markedly elevated (p < 0.01), and the RIF index in the GA group was alleviated compared with that in the UUO group (p < 0.01). Compared with the SHO group, the expression of prohibitin (protein or mRNA) in the UUO group was significantly reduced (each p < 0.01). Prohibitin expression in the GA group was markedly increased when compared with that in the UUO (p < 0.01). The expression of TGF-β1 (protein and mRNA), protein expressions of Col-IV, fibronectin, α-SMA and cleaved Caspase-3, ROS generation and cell apoptosis index in the UUO group were markedly higher than those in the SHO group (all p < 0.01), and their expressions in the GA group were markedly down-regulated compared to those in the UUO group (all p < 0.01, respectively). The protein expression of prohibitin was negatively correlated with the RIF index, protein expression of TGF-β1, Col-IV, fibronectin, α-SMA or cleaved Caspase-3, ROS generation and the cell apoptosis index (each p < 0.01). In conclusion, lower expression of prohibitin is associated with the RIF, and ATRA treatment is associated with increased prohibitin, which can prevent the progression of RIF.

Abstract
Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is the final common pathway for chronic kidney disease. Cell apoptosis is a critical detrimental event that leads to renal fibrosis. Paired box 2 (PAX2) plays a major role in the development of the kidney. This study was performed to investigate whether PAX2 was associated with cell apoptosis in the progression of RIF in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) rats. Eighty Wistar male rats were divided into two groups randomly: sham operation group (SHO) and model group subjected to UUO (GU), n = 40, respectively. The model was established by left ureteral ligation. Renal tissues were collected 14 and 28 days after surgery. Protein expressions of PAX2, transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen-IV (Col-IV), fibronectin (FN), and caspase-3 were detected using immunohistochemical analysis; mRNA expression of PAX2 in renal tissue was detected by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction; and RIF index and cell apoptosis index in renal interstitium were also calculated. When compared with those in the SHO group, expressions of PAX2 (protein and mRNA) were markedly increased in the GU group (each p < 0.01). Protein expressions of TGF-β1, α-SMA, Col-IV, FN, and caspase-3 and RIF index and cell apoptosis index in the GU group were remarkably increased when compared with those in the SHO group (each p < 0.01). The protein expression of PAX2 was positively correlated with the protein expressions of TGF-β1, α-SMA, Col-IV, FN, and caspase-3 and with RIF index and cell apoptosis index (all p < 0.01). The apoptotic cell in our observation was mainly derived from renal tubular epithelial cells. In conclusion, the increased expression of PAX2 is associated with cell apoptosis in the progression of RIF in UUO rats, suggesting that PAX2 is a potentially therapeutic target for prevention of RIF. Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is an important plasma protein in cholesterol homeostasis and plays a key role in the pathogenesis of glomerulosclerosis (GS). Gelatinases include matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). The abnormal expressions of gelatinases are implicated in the pathogenesis of extracellular matrix accumulation. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an import biological agent which can play a protective role against GS. We performed this investigation to explore whether ATRA could regulate the expressions of gelatinases and apoE in the glomerulus of GS rats. 120 Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham operation group (SHO), glomerulosclerosis model group without treatment (GS) and GS model group treated with ATRA (GA). The GS disease was established by uninephrectomy and adriamycin injection. At the end of 9 and 13 weeks, the relevant samples were collected and determined. Compared with GS group at 9/13 weeks, values of 24-hour urine total protein, 24-hour urine excretion for albumin, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine and glomerulosclerosis index, and protein expressions of apoE, transforming growth factor-βl (TGF-β1), α-smooth muscle actin, collagen-IV and fibronectin in glomerulus and mRNA expressions of apoE and TGF-β1 in renal tissue were significantly down-regulated by ATRA (each P<0.01). However, the expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 (mRNA, protein and activity) were enhanced in GA group than those in GS group. In conclusion, gelatinases are associated with apoE expression, and ATRA can increase the gelatinases expressions and reduce the accumulation of apoE in glomerulus of GS rats, but the detailed mechanism needs to be elucidated in the future.

Abstract
Guangxi Zhuang, the largest ethnic minority in China, is located in the southern part of the country, and well-known to the world as the longevity village. Studies of apolipoprotein E (APOE) polymorphism in adults suggest the lower frequencies of E4 allele and E4/E4 genotype may account, in part, for the favorable lipid profiles of Guangxi Zhuang. However, the effect of APOE polymorphism on serum lipids in the Guangxi Zhuang children is yet unknown to date. In the present study, genomic DNA was extracted from 278 Guangxi Zhuang and 200 Guangxi Han children. APOE genotypes were determined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The fasting serum lipoprotein a [Lp(a)], total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1) and apoB were measured. Our results demonstrated that no significant differences in serum lipids were observed between the Guangxi Zhuang and Han children. The E4/E4 and E4/E3 genotypic frequencies were significantly lower in the Guangxi Zhuang children compared with the Guangxi Han children, whereas for E2/E2, E3/E2 and E4/E2 genotypic frequencies the opposite was presented. Though no significant differences in serum lipid concentrations were found for variant alleles both in the Guangxi Zhuang and Han children, the trend was observed in the association of higher levels of Lp(a), TC, TG and LDL-C with E4 allele in the Guangxi Zhuang children. In conclusion, a significant heterogeneity in APOE genetic variation indeed exists between the Guangxi Zhuang and Han ethnic group. The E4 allele may serve as a genetic marker for susceptibility to higher lipid profiles in the Guangxi Zhuang children. Lifestyle should be modified, according to APOE polymorphism even in the young children.
