Abstract
In today's world, one of the main problems is cancer, which still has a long way to go to cure it, and it brings a lot of financial and emotional costs to the people of society and governments. Breast cancer (BC) and cervical cancer (CC), two of the most common cancers, are caused by several genetic and environmental factors in women. These two cancers' involvement rate is higher than other cancers in women. microRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNA molecules with a length of 18 to 24 nucleotides, which play an important role in post-translational changes. miRNAs themselves are divided into two categories, oncomiRs and tumor suppressors. OncomiRs have a part in tumor expansion and tumor suppressors prevent tumor development and progress. miRNAs can control cellular processes by regulating various pathways including autophagy, apoptosis, and signaling. Apoptosis is a type of programmed cell death that includes intrinsic and extrinsic pathways and is different from other cell death pathways such as necrosis and ferroptosis. Apoptosis controls the growth, differentiation, and death of cells by regulating the death of damaged and old cells, and since miRNAs are one of the factors that regulate apoptosis, and divided into two categories: pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic. We decided in this study to investigate the relationship between miRNAs and apoptosis in the most common women's cancers, BC and CC.

Abstract
Plant-derived immunomodulators and antitumor factors have appealed lots of attention from natural product scientists for their efficiency and safety and their important contribution to well-designed targeted drug action and delivery mechanisms. Zerumbone (ZER), the chief component of Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes, has been examined for its wide-spectrum in the treatment of multi-targeted diseases. The rhizomes have been used as food flavoring agents in numerous cuisines and in flora medication. Numerous in vivo and in vitro experiments have prepared confirmation of ZER as a potent immunomodulator as well as a potential anti-tumor agent. This review is an interesting compilation of all the important results of the research carried out to date to investigate the immunomodulatory and anticancer properties of ZER. The ultimate goal of this comprehensive review is to supply updated information and a crucial evaluation on ZER, including its chemistry and immunomodulating and antitumour properties, which may be of principal importance to supply a novel pathway for subsequent investigation to discover new agents to treat cancers and immune-related sickness. In addition, updated information on the toxicology of ZER has been summarized to support its safety profile.

Abstract
Background Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the common malignant tumors in women, Currently, 30% of patients with intermediate to advanced squamous cervical cancer are still uncontrolled or recurrent after standard radical simultaneous radiotherapy; therefore, the search for critical genes affecting the sensitivity of radiotherapy may lead to new strategies for treatment. Methods Firstly, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between radiotherapy-sensitivity and radiotherapy-resistance were identified by GEO2R from the gene expression omnibus (GEO) website, and prognosis-related genes for cervical cancer were obtained from the HPA database. Subsequently, the DAVID database analyzed gene ontology (GO). Meanwhile, the protein-protein interaction network was constructed by STRING; By online analysis of DEGs, prognostic genes, and CCDB data that are associated with cervical cancer formation through the OncoLnc database, we aim to search for the key DEGs associated with CC, Finally, the key gene(s) was further validated by immunohistochemistry. Result 298 differentially expressed genes, 712 genes associated with prognosis, and 509 genes related to cervical cancer formation were found. The results of gene function analysis showed that DEGs were mainly significant in functional pathways such as variable shear and energy metabolism. By further verification, two genes, ASPH and NKAPP1 were identified through validation as genes that affect both sensitivities to radiotherapy and survival finally. Then, immunohistochemical results showed that the ASPH gene was highly expressed in the radiotherapy-resistant group and had lower Overall survival (OS) and Progression-free survival (PFS). Conclusion This study aims to better understand the characteristics of cervical cancer radiation therapy resistance-related genes through bioinformatics and provide further research ideas for finding new mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets related to cervical cancer radiation therapy.

Abstract
The B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) anti-apoptotic proteins have become attractive therapeutic targets especially with the development of BH3-mimetics which selectively target these proteins. However, it is important to note that expression levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins and their relevance in inhibiting apoptosis varies between different cell lineages. This addiction to certain anti-apoptotic proteins for survival, can be determined with various techniques and targeted effectively with selective BH3-mimetics. Studies have highlighted that anti-apoptotic proteins BCL-XL and MCL-1 are crucial for cervical cancer cell survival. Co-targeting BCL-XL and MCL-1 with selective BH3-mimetics yielded promising results in cervical cancer cell lines. In this review, we focus on the expression levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins in cervical cancer tissues and how to possibly target them with BH3-mimetics.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that microRNA plays an essential role in the development and metastasis of many tumor progressions, including cervical cancer. Aberrant miR-744 expression has been indicated in many growth of tumor, the mechanism of miR-744 inhibits both the proliferation and metastatic ability for cervical cancer remains unclear. Accumulating evidences reported that Bcl-2 signal pathway plays an important role in the cellular process, such as apoptosis, cell growth and proliferation. The goal of this study was to identify miR-744 that could inhibit the growth, migration, invasion, proliferation and metastasis of gastric cancer through targeting Bcl-2 expression. Real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to quantify miR-744 expression in vitro and vivo experiments. The biological functions of miR-744 were determined via cell proliferation. Our study indicated that miR-744 targeted on Bcl-2, which leads to the inactivation of apoptosis signaling and the cell proliferation of cervical cancer cells, ameliorating cervical cancer growth and progression. In addition, both up-regulation of miR-744 and down-regulation of Bcl-2 could stimulate Caspase-3 expression, promoting apoptosis of cervical cancer cells. Therefore, our research revealed the mechanistic links between miR-744 and Bcl-2 in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer through modulation of Caspase-3, leading to the inhibition of cervical cancer cell growth. And targeting miR-744 could be served as a novel strategy for future cervical cancer therapy clinically.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiotherapy (RT) plays an integral role in the combined-modality management of cervical cancer. Various molecular mechanisms have been implicated in the adaptive cellular response to RT. Identification of these molecular processes may permit the prediction of treatment outcome and enhanced radiation-induced cancer cell killing through tailoring of the management approach, and/or the employment of selective inhibitors of these pathways. METHODS PubMed was searched for studies presenting biomarkers of cervical cancer radioresistance validated in patient studies or in laboratory experimentation. RESULTS Several biomarkers of cervical cancer radioresistance are validated by patient survival or recurrence data. These biomarkers fall into categories of biological function including hypoxia, cell proliferation, cell-cell adhesion, and evasion of apoptosis. Additional radioresistance biomarkers have been identified in exploratory experiments. CONCLUSIONS Biomarkers of radioresistance in cervical cancer may allow molecular profiling of individual tumors, leading to tailored therapies and better prognostication and prediction of outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A number of studies have evaluated the association of p53 expression with the cervical cancer clinical outcome, but the results were inconsistent. STUDY DESIGN Electronic search of PubMed was conducted to select studies. Studies which quantitatively evaluated the relationship between p53 expression and survival of the patients with cervical cancer were chosen, and hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the association. RESULTS The final meta-analysis contained 11 published studies including 1105 patients. Combined HRs suggested that p53 overexpression has an unfavorable impact on overall survival(OS) [HR=1.672, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.144-2.444, P=0.008], and Caucasian cervical cancer patients OS[HR=1.942, 95% CI: 1.162-3.245, P=0.011]. CONCLUSIONS p53 expression indicates a poor prognosis for Caucasian people with cervical cancer.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the association between nedaplatin (NDP) sensitivity and the expression of biological factors in cervical cancer. A total of 45 cervical cancer specimens, including 18 pretreatment biopsies and 27 surgical specimens, were used in histoculture drug response assays to determine the chemosensitivity of cervical cancer specimens to NDP. Each specimen was assessed for immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67, p53, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), cleaved caspase-3, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1). The results revealed that low or negative expression of p53, Bcl-2 and COX-2, and high or positive expression of cleaved caspase-3 were significantly correlated with high sensitivity to NDP. However, there were no significant differences in Ki-67, Bax or ERCC1 expression between the low and high sensitivity groups. These findings indicate that sensitivity to platinum may be easily predicted by immunostaining for the detection of these specific factors in pretreatment biopsies or surgical specimens. The expression profiles of these targets may therefore provide additional information for planning individualized chemotherapy in the treatment of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Persistent high risk human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is probably the best predictor of increased risk of cervical cancer, but expression of certain markers of cell proliferation and apoptosis have been studied. The present study was conducted to evaluate the expression of p53 and bcl2 in premalignant and malignant lesions of cervix and its correlation with HPV type 16 and 18. Materials and Methods: The study comprised of 35 cases (including 24 prospective cases and 11 retrospective cases) of premalignant and malignant lesions of the cervix. Slides were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and p53, bcl2 (immunohistochemistry), HPV 16 and HPV 18 (in situ hybridization). Results: p53 positivity was seen in 8/19 (42.1%) cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and 8/16 (50%) cases of carcinoma cervix, the difference not significant statistically. The difference in bcl2 expression in CIN versus carcinoma cervix (84.21% vs. 43.75%) was statistically significant (P = 0.030). There was no significant difference between p53 and bcl2 expression and the stage and grade of the tumors. Seven out of 19 cases of CIN (36.84%) were positive for HPV 16/18 infection and 8/16 cases (50%) of carcinoma cervix were HPV positive (P = 0.628). Conclusions: No significant association was found between HPV 16/18 infection and p53 and bcl2 expression in premalignant and malignant lesions of uterine cervix. Although, bcl2 staining showed a significant difference between CIN and carcinoma cervix, a larger case series is required to assess the association between HPV infection and overexpression of p53 and bcl2 proteins in these lesions.

Abstract
In last decades, the basic, clinical, and translational research efforts have been directed to the identification of standard biomarkers associated with the degree of malignancy. There is an increasingly public health concern for earlier detection of cancer development at stages in which successful treatments can be achieved. To meet this urgent clinical demand, early stage cancer biomarkers supported by reliable and robust experimental data that can be readily applicable in the clinical practice, are required. In the current standard protocols, when one or two of the canonical proliferating index biomarkers are analyzed, contradictory results are frequently reached leading to incorrect cancer diagnostic and unsuccessful therapies. Therefore, the identification of other cellular characteristics or signatures present in the tumor cells either alone or in combination with the well-established proliferation markers emerge as an alternative strategy in the improvement of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Because it is well known that several pathways and processes are altered in tumor cells, the concept of "single marker" in cancer results incorrect. Therefore, this review aims to analyze and discuss the proposal that the molecular profile of different genes or proteins in different altered tumor pathways must be established to provide a better global clinical pattern for cancer detection and prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether BCL-2 expression would improve MVP/IGF-1R prediction of clinical outcome in cervix carcinoma patients treated by radiochemotherapy, and suggest possible mechanisms behind this effect. METHODS Fifty consecutive patients, who achieved complete response to treatment, from a whole series of 60 cases suffering from non-metastatic localized cervical carcinoma, were prospectively included in this study from July 1999 to December 2003. Follow-up was closed in January 2011. All patients received pelvic radiation (45-64.80 Gy in 1.8-2 Gy fractions) with concomitant cisplatin at 40 mg/m2/week doses followed by brachytherapy. Oncoprotein expression was studied by immunohistochemistry in paraffin-embedded tumour tissue. RESULTS No relation was found between BCL-2 and clinicopathological variables. High MVP/IGF-1R/BCL-2 tumour expression was strongly related to poor local and regional disease-free survival (P<0.0001), distant disease-free survival (P=0.010), disease-free survival (P<0.0001), and cause-specific survival (P<0.0001). NHEJ repair protein Ku70/80 expression was significantly repressed in tumours overexpressing all three oncoproteins (P=0.047). No differences were observed in proliferation (Ki67 expression) or P53 alteration. CONCLUSIONS BCL-2, MVP, and IGF-1R overexpression were related to poorer clinical outcome in cervical cancer patients who achieved clinical complete response to radiochemotherapy. The NHEJ repair protein Ku70/80 expression could be involved in the regulation of these oncoproteins.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to systematically review the prognostic and predictive significance of cell biological markers in cervical cancer patients primarily treated with (chemo)radiation. A PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane literature search was performed. Studies describing a relation between a cell biological marker and survival in ≥50 cervical cancer patients primarily treated with (chemo)radiation were selected. Study quality was assessed, and studies with a quality score of 4 or lower were excluded. Cell biological markers were clustered on biological function, and the prognostic and predictive significance of these markers was described. In total, 42 studies concerning 82 cell biological markers were included in this systematic review. In addition to cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-ag) levels, markers associated with poor prognosis were involved in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling (EGFR and C-erbB-2) and in angiogenesis and hypoxia (carbonic anhydrase 9 and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α). Epidermal growth factor receptor and C-erbB-2 were also associated with poor response to (chemo)radiation. In conclusion, EGFR signaling is associated with poor prognosis and response to therapy in cervical cancer patients primarily treated with (chemo)radiation, whereas markers involved in angiogenesis and hypoxia, COX-2, and serum SCC-ag levels are associated with a poor prognosis. Therefore, targeting these pathways in combination with chemoradiation may improve survival in advanced-stage cervical cancer patients.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the prognostic significance of the expression of p53 and Ki-67, and their correlation with various clinicopathological factors in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix treated by radical hysterectomy. METHODS Two hundred and thirty five patients diagnosed between 1987 and 2004 were investigated for p53 and Ki-67 expression by immunohistochemistry. The relationship of these proteins and other potential prognostic factors with recurrence-free survival (RFS) was evaluated. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 43.9 years (range, 27-68). There were 28 cases with stage IA2 (11.9%) and 207 cases with stage IB1 (88.1%). The overall 5-year RFS was 91.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] 86.0, 94.4). p53 and Ki-67 expressions were seen in 33.6% and 81.3% of cases, respectively. p53 expression was significantly associated only with parametrial or marginal involvement (P = 0.005), while Ki-67 expression significantly correlated only with larger tumor (P = 0.011) and parametrial or marginal involvement (P = 0.024). There was significant correlation between the expression of p53 and Ki-67 (P = 0.021). In multivariate analysis, Ki-67 expression (hazard ratio for >or=3rd vs 1st tertile [>or=30% vs <20% expression] = 16.0, 95%CI 2.1-124.5; P = 0.0015) appeared to be an independent prognostic factor for RFS, while no prognostic significance of p53 expression was found. CONCLUSION Ki-67 expression is an independent prognostic parameter for RFS in patients with early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Ki-67 expression at or above the cut-off point of 30.0% had significantly poorer RFS.

Abstract
4-Demethylepipodophyllotoxin 7′-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (4′ DPG), a new podophyllotoxin glucoside with a chemical structure similar to that of 4-demethylpicropodophyllotoxin 7′-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (4DPG), was isolated from the rhizomes of Sinopodophyllum emodi (Wall.) Ying (Berberidaceae). Like 4DPG and etoposide (VP-16), 4′ DPG displayed dose- and time-dependent cytotoxic effects in HepG2 cells. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated the presence of apoptotic cells and DNA fragmentation after HepG2 cells were exposed to 4′ DPG (1 µmol/L). In addition, 4′ DPG-driven apoptotic events were associated with upregulation of Bax and downregulation of Bcl-2. These results suggest that 4′ DPG has prominent cytotoxic activity and induces apoptosis by increasing the ratio of Bax to Bcl-2 in HepG2 cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between the apoptotic pathway and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a promising area of scientific interest for cancer researchers. TRAIL-receptor-activating agents have demonstrated favorable in vitro and in vivo activity for the treatment of several malignancies including breast and gynecologic cancers. METHODS This article reviews the available peer-reviewed literature and our own institution's experience with specific TRAIL-receptor-activating agents. Emphasis was placed on the apoptotic/TRAIL mechanism, preclinical evaluation, and phase I studies in various malignancies. RESULTS Preclinical and early phase I studies indicate that these novel agents are safe with enhanced target specificity for malignancy. When these targeted agents are combined with conventional chemotherapy drugs or radiation therapy, they appear to increase cell death over single-agent modalities. CONCLUSIONS TRAIL-receptor-activating agents represent an exciting new class of targeted therapies that hold promise to improve the treatment of women with breast and gynecologic malignancies.

Abstract
We investigated the significance of prognostic markers-estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, p53, MIB-1 and bcl-2 - in adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. In 101 patients with primary cervical adenocarcinoma, treated from 1989 to 2000, we evaluated clinical parameters in relation to these prognostic markers. Mean age of patients was 45 years. Seventy eight percent of the patients were in FIGO stage I, 16% stage II, 7% stage III and IV. estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, p53 and bcl-2 immunoreactivity was scored as 0 (up to 5% positive cells), 1+ (5-25% of cells positive), 2+ (26-50% of cells positive), 3+ (51-75% of cells positive) or 4+ (>76% of cells positive). MIB-1 was scored in 10 categories: 0-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, 91-100. The overall survival rate was 67%. Survival was not influenced by estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, MIB-1, or bcl-2 strongly positive staining. Only p53 showed significant influence on survival, even when adjusted for stage or tumor grade. In conclusion, it does not seems useful to determine estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, MIB-1 or bcl-2 in cervical adenocarcinomas as an indication of prognosis: survival is not influenced by presence or absence. However, if p53 staining is strongly positive survival is significantly worse than in tumors scored as negative or weak positive.

Abstract
NF-kappaB activity is elevated in a high proportion of cancers, particularly advanced cancers that have been treated previously. Cytotoxic treatment selects for such up-regulation inasmuch as NF-kappaB promotes transcription of a large number of proteins that inhibit both the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis; NF-kappaB also boosts expression of mdr1, which expels many drugs from cells. Indeed, high NF-kappaB activity appears to be largely responsible for the chemo- and radioresistance of many cancers. Thus, agents that suppress NF-kappaB activity should be useful as adjuvants to cytotoxic cancer therapy. Of the compounds that are known to be NF-kappaB antagonists, the most practical for current use may be the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs aspirin, salicylic acid, and sulindac, each of which binds to and inhibits Ikappa kinase- beta, a central mediator of NF-kappa activation; the low millimolar plasma concentrations of salicylate required for effective inhibition of this kinase in vivo can be achieved with high-dose regimens traditionally used to manage rheumatic disorders. The gastrointestinal toxicity of such regimens could be minimized by using salsalate or enteric-coated sodium salicy-late or by administering misoprostol in conjunction with aspirin therapy. Presumably, best results would be seen if these agents were administered for several days prior to a course of chemo- or radiotherapy, continuing throughout the course. This concept should first be tested in nude mice bearing xenografts of chemoresistant human tumors known to have elevated NF-kappa activity. Ultimately, more complex adjuvant regimens can be envisioned in which salicylates are used in conjunction with other NF-kappa antagonists and/or agents that target other mediators of down-regulated apoptosis in cancer, such as Stat3; coadministration of salicylate and organic selenium may have intriguing potential in this regard. These strategies may also have potential as adjuvants to metronomic chemotherapy, which seeks to suppress angio-genesis by targeting cycling endothelial cells in tumors.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between bcl-2 expression, some pathological factors (lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI), tumor grade, depth of stromal invasion), and tumor recurrence in cervical cancer. METHODS A matched case-control study was performed in cervical cancer patients who underwent radical hysterectomy and were found to have negative lymph node between January 1992 and June 1998 in Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Medical College and Vajira Hospital and Maharaj Nakorn Chiangmai Hospital, Thailand. Cases were 32 patients who had tumor recurrence within 5 years after surgery. Controls were 63 patients who were disease free for at least 5 years after surgery. Cases and controls were matched for age, stage, histology, and tumor size. All except one case, who had only one matching control, had two controls. Paraffin-embedded cervical cancer tissues of cases and controls were immunohistochemical stained for bcl-2. RESULTS Bcl-2 positive was demonstrated in 43.7% of tumor from recurrent cases, which was not different from 50.8% from non-recurrent controls (P = 0.378). Tumor grade and LVSI had significant association with tumor recurrence. From multivariable analysis, the patients with grade 2-3 tumors had the odds ratio of 6.9 for recurrence compared to patients with grade 1 tumors. The patients whose tumors had LVSI had the recurrent odds ratio of 5.4 compared to those without LVSI. CONCLUSIONS There was no association between bcl-2 expression and tumor recurrence in cervical cancer, while tumor grade and LVSI had significant association with tumor recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a neoplastic disease characterized by the accumulation of morphologically mature monoclonal CD5+ B cells in the early phase (G0/G1) of the cell cycle. The accumulation of neoplastically transformed B-lymphocytes (CLL cells) is primarily the consequence of apoptosis blocking in these cells. Bcl-2 proteins are well-known modulators of this process. Some of these proteins are anti-apoptotic while the others are pro-apoptotic. All contain at least one of the four conserved regions called the Bcl-2 homologous domains (BH1-BH4). Evidence indicates that Bcl-2 and Bax form homo- and heterodimers. The anti-apoptotic effect of Bcl-2 protein is based on its ability to bind Bax protein in the heterodimer form, and thus to block the forming of Bax/Bax proapoptotic homodimers. The ratio of Bcl-2/Bax represents the cell autonomous rheostat which determinates the type of the cell reaction to an apoptotic stimulus. METHODS The aim of this study was to determine the level of interaction between these two proteins in CLL cells using the co-immunoprecipition method. The study included the analysis of 20 peripheral blood specimens from 20 patients with CLL, and 20 peripheral blood specimens from healthy persons, who were in the control group. Specimens were precipitated with the monoclonal antibody for Bcl-2 protein, and immunoblotted with the palyclonal antibady for Bax protein (IP: Bcl-2/WB:Bax). At the same time, specimens were precipitated with the polyclonal antibody for Bax protein, and immunoblotted with the monoclonal antibody for Bcl-2 protein (IP: Bax/WB:Bcl-2). The intensity of Bcl-2 and Bax protein's binding compared to the control samples of the peripheral blood from healthy persons, was increased in CLL cells. RESULTS IP: Bax/WB: Bcl-2 showed a high level of "free" Bcl-2 protein which was not bound in the heterodimer form to Bax protein. Simultaneously IP: Bcl-2/WB: Bax showed that a higher quantity of Bax protein was bound in the heterodimer form to Bcl-2 protein as opposed to the quantity of pro-apoptotic Bax protein potentialy bound in the homodimer form. CONCLUSION Further studies involving larger groups of patients are necessary to explore the potential significance of the Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio as a prognositc parameter in the CLL treatment.

Abstract
4-Demethyl-picropodophyllotoxin 7'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4DPG), a new podophyllotoxin glucoside, was isolated from the rhizomes of Sinopodophyllum emodi (Wall.) Ying and showed cytotoxic effects in human carcinoma cells. Among the target cells (HeLa, A2 and SH-SY5Y), the cytotoxic effects of 4DPG showed dose- and time-dependency. Furthermore, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was more sensitive to 4DPG. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated the presence of apoptotic cells with low DNA content, a decrease of cell population at the G1 phase, and a concomitant increase of cell population at the G2/M phase. 4DPG also caused DNA fragmentation in HeLa cells. Treatment with 0.1 microM 4DPG increased p53 expression and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in HeLa cells, as well as in A2 cells. These results suggested that 4DPG-induced apoptosis might be through a p53-dependent pathway.

Abstract
This is the final part of a four-part serial review on oncogenes and their potential use as targets for cancer therapy. Previous sections discussed various categories of oncogenes (growth factors, tyrosine kinases, intermediate signaling molecules, and transcription factors) and the advances made in various strategies being used to alter their actions. This part describes four oncogenes, MDM2, BCL2, XIAP, and Survivin, that are involved in regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis.
