Direct determination of aluminium in serum and urine by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry using ruthenium as permanent modifier

Chemically modified graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets for the selective turn-off fluorescence detection of Al(III) ions in crabs (Brachyura)

The selective and sensitive detection of Al(III) is critically important for human health since the level of Al(III) is an indicator of many diseases in humans. Herein, we developed a simple and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the detection of Al(III) in an aqueous solution based on the fluorescence of hydroxyl-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (HO/g-CN). OH/g-CN nanosheets were synthesized via the thermal pyrolysis of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (as raw material) at 550 °C for 2 hours, followed by thermal alkali treatment at 730 °C for 2 min. The fluorescence of HO/g-CN at 377 nm (at 290 nm excitation) can be quenched by Al(III) effectively and selectively, and the linear relationship between the concentration of Al(III) and fluorescence intensity is in the range of 1.85-14.82 μM with a detection limit of 0.272 μM. The fluorescence turn-off effect of the Al(III) ion on the prepared HO/g-CN nanosheets could be attributed to the presence of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups on the surface of HO/g-CN that have chelating interactions with Al(III), leading to quenching. The surface functional groups of OH/g-CN were confirmed using different characterization techniques (FTIR, EDX, and XPS). Moreover, the prepared HO/g-CN exhibited remarkable long-term fluorescence stability in water (>30 days) and minimal toxicity. Importantly, a prepared novel fluorescent sensor (HO/g-CN) was successfully applied for the detection and determination of Al(III) in commercially available crab (Brachyura) samples.

Solid-phase extraction and separation procedure for trace aluminum in water samples and its determination by high-resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS FAAS)

In the present study, a separation/preconcentration procedure for determination of aluminum in water samples has been developed by using a new atomic absorption spectrometer concept with a high-intensity xenon short-arc lamp as continuum radiation source, a high-resolution double-echelle monochromator, and a charge-coupled device array detector. Sample solution pH, sample volume, flow rate of sample solution, volume, and concentration of eluent for solid-phase extraction of Al chelates with 4-[(dicyanomethyl)diazenyl] benzoic acid on polymeric resin (Duolite XAD-761) have been investigated. The adsorbed aluminum on resin was eluted with 5 mL of 2 mol L(-1) HNO(3) and its concentration was determined by high-resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS FAAS). Under the optimal conditions, limit of detection obtained with HR-CS FAAS and Line Source FAAS (LS-FAAS) were 0.49 μg L(-1) and 3.91 μg L(-1), respectively. The accuracy of the procedure was confirmed by analyzing certified materials (NIST SRM 1643e, Trace elements in water) and spiked real samples. The developed procedure was successfully applied to water samples.

Application of Zeeman graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with high-frequency modulation polarization for the direct determination of aluminum, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, and thallium in human blood

Determination of aluminum (Al), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and thallium (Tl) concentrations in human blood using high-frequency modulation polarization Zeeman graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was performed. No sample digestion was used in the current study. Blood samples were diluted with deionized water or 0.1 % (m/v) Triton X-100 solution for Tl. Dilution factors ranged from 1/5 per volume for Be and Tl to 1/20 per volume for Cd and Pb. For Tl, Cd, and Hg, noble metals (gold, platinum, rhodium, etc.) were applied as surface modifiers. To mitigate chloride interference, 2 % (m/v) solution of NH(4)NO(3) was used as matrix modifier for Tl and Ni assessment. The use of Pd(NO(3))(2) as oxidative modifier was necessary for blood Hg and Tl measurement. Validation of the methods was performed by analyzing two-level reference material Seronorm. The precision of the designed methods as relative SD was between 4 and 12 % (middle of a dynamic range) depending on the element. For additional validation, spiked blood samples were analyzed. Limits of detection (LoDs, 3σ, n = 10) for undiluted blood samples were 2.0 μg L(-1) for Al, 0.08 μg L(-1) for Be, 0.10 μg L(-1) for Cd, 2.2 μg L(-1) for Cr, 7 μg L(-1) for Hg, 0.4 μg L(-1) for Mn, 2.3 μg L(-1) for Ni, 3.4 μg L(-1) for Pb, and 0.5 μg L(-1) for Tl. The LoDs achieved allowed determination of Al, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Pb at both toxic and background levels. Be, Hg, and Tl could be reliably measured at toxic levels only. The methods developed are used for clinical diagnostics and biological monitoring of work-related exposure.

Novel spectrophotometric method for the determination of aluminum in soda drinks packed in cans and plastic bottles

In the present work, a new spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of aluminum in soda drinks packed in different materials. Reaction among Al(III), phenylfluorone (PF) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in slightly alkaline medium was explored for this purpose. The method was optimized regarding to its chemical parameters in order to establish better conditions in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. The results obtained showed that the concentration of CPC presented remarkable influence on the sensitivity and acted as a sensitizer for the studied system. The possible interferences of some metallic cations were evaluated and the cations Cu(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) presented noticed interference on the Al(III) signal. So, their interference was eliminated by using EDTA with minimum loss of sensitivity. The results obtained in the determination of total aluminum in soda drinks by the developed methodology were not statistically different from those obtained by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. In the optimized conditions the method presented a linear range of 5-100 microg L(-1). The limits of detection and quantification were 0.81 and 2.7 microg L(-1), respectively. The methodology was successfully applied in the determination of aluminum in 10 samples of soda drinks packed in cans and plastic bottles.

Chemometrics-assisted spectrophotometric methods for simultaneous determination and complexation study of Fe(III), Al(III) and V(V) with morin in micellar media

Evolutionary factor analysis (EFA) and rank annihilation factor analysis (RAFA) were applied to resolve the two-way equilibrium spectrophotometric data belonging to the complexes of Fe(III), Al(III) and V(V) with morin (3,5,7,20,40-penta hydroxy flavone) as chelating agent in triton X-100 micellar media. Then, partial least square regression combined with genetic algorithm for wavelength selection (GA-PLS) was used for simultaneous determination of the metal ions. The parameters controlling behavior of the system were investigated and optimum conditions were selected. The predictive abilities of partial least squares regression (PLS) and genetic algorithm-partial least squares regression (GA-PLS) were examined in simultaneous determination of ternary mixtures of metal ions over the concentration range of 17.0-170.0ngml(-1), 25.0-180.0ngml(-1) and 40.0-325.0ngml(-1) for Fe(III), Al(III) and V(V), respectively. The relative standard errors for prediction of the ions in synthetic mixtures were lower than 5% and the mean recoveries in the tap water spiked samples were 104.2 and 101.7% for PLS and GA-PLS, respectively.

Simultaneous determination of Fe(III) and Al(III) by first-derivative spectrophotometry and partial least-squares (PLS-2) method - application to post-haemodialysis fluids

Derivative spectrophotometry (graphical method) and partial least-squares regression (numerical method) methods were developed for the spectrophotometric multi-component analysis of post-haemodialysis fluids and synthetic mixtures containing Al(III) and Fe(III) without any chemical separation. The complexes of these metal ions with chrome azurol S were formed immediately at pH 5.5 and were stable for at least 3h. The graphical method is based on the use of first-derivative spectra for evaluation because working wavelength determination was more precise and spectral overlap was less than in the ordinary spectra. Two wavelengths at which the complexes exhibited maximum absorption values for Fe(III) and Al(III) were selected as analytical wavelengths, i.e., 675 and 623.5 nm, respectively. Lambert-Beer's law is obeyed between 0.0896-8.064 microg/mL Fe(III) and 0.054-0.486 microg/mL Al(III). Limits of detection for Fe(III) and Al(III) were 0.056 and 0.044 microg/mL, respectively. The reproducibility, expressed as variation coefficients, for two sets of 10 standard mixtures containing 3.584 microg/mL Fe(III) and 0.27 microg/mL Al(III) were 1.9% and 2% for iron and aluminium, respectively. In the numerical method, a training set was randomly prepared by using 14 samples. The concentration of each component has been varied in the linear range of the analytical signal. The spectral regions between 510 and 720 nm were selected for the analysis of the binary mixture of Fe(III)/Al(III). The proposed methods were validated by using synthetic binary mixtures and applied to the simultaneous determination of Fe(III) and Al(III) in post-haemodialysis samples. The obtained results were compared with each other; in general, both multi-component methods gave rise to similar recovery results for laboratory-prepared mixtures and real samples.

Determination of aluminium in natural water samples

The atmospheric deposition of terrestrial dust into the ocean is an important factor in controlling Earth's climate. Aluminium can be used as a tracer for the magnitude and location of dust transported from the land to surface ocean. The element is ideal for this purpose since its primary input is via aeolian dust deposition and it has a short surface water residence time. The accurate determination of dissolved aluminium in seawater is difficult due to the complexity of the matrix and the trace (nanomolar) concentrations at which the metal exists. This paper presents a critical review of the different sampling and analytical methods for the determination of the concentration of aluminium in natural waters, with particular focus on techniques successfully applied to shipboard analysis of seawater.

Effect of pH on the characteristics of potassium permanganate-luminol CL reaction in the presence of trace aluminum(III) and its analytical application

At pHs> or =11.45, trace Al was found to enhance the CL from luminol-KMnO(4) system. However, at pHs< or =10.42, it was found to inhibit strongly the CL from luminol-KMnO(4) system. The effect of pH, luminol and potassium permanganate concentrations on the kinetic characteristics of CL system was investigated in the presence of trace Al. On this basis, a flow injection inhibition chemiluminescence method was established for the determination of trace Al in this study. Under optimized conditions, the CL decreased linearly with Al(III) concentration in the range of 8-500microg L(-1) and the detection limit (3sigma) of 2microg L(-1). The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) is 3.6% for 100microg L(-1) Al(III) (n=11). The method has been applied to the determination of trace Al in real water samples with satisfactory results without the pretreatment of samples. The results given by the proposed method are in good agreement with those given by ICP-AES detection method.

Aluminum determination in biological fluids and dialysis concentrates via chelation with 8-hydroxyquinoline and solvent extraction/fluorimetry

We describe a simple, rapid, and sensitive fluorescence method for measurement of aluminum (Al) in human biological fluids, in dialysis solutions, and in tap water, which uses 8-hydroxyquinoline for ion chelation. The fluorescence intensity of the toluene-extracted metal chelate (excitation wavelength, 380 nm; emission wavelength, 504 nm) remains unchanged for over 48 h at room temperature. Fluorescence intensity is a linear function of the concentration of Al in the 2-1000 microg/L range with detection limits of 0.7-2 microg/L. A large excess of other ions normally found in biological fluids does not interfere in Al determination. The method developed was successfully used in assaying Al in serum and urine of reference subjects, in serum samples from patients undergoing long-term dialysis, and in dialysis solutions. Al concentrations, measured by this fluorimetric procedure, were compared with those obtained by Zeeman graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. A correlation coefficient of 0.98 was obtained. The proposed method could be used for routine analysis in clinical laboratories for accurate determination of aluminum in aqueous or biological fluids.
