Abstract
A fast, simple, sensitive, and efficient vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method (VA-DES-DLME) was developed based on hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent for extraction of folic acid from flour samples followed by HPLC determination. Hydrophobic DES was prepared by mixing amylalcohol as a hydrogen bond donor and methyltriocthylammonium chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor. Factors affecting DLLME were considered and optimized. In optimal conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the range 5.0-500 ng g-1 with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.99. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.0 and 3.0 ng g-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision at concentrations of 10 and 100 ng g-1 were less than 8%. Finally, application of the proposed procedure was investigated by folic acid analysis in flour samples and the relative recoveries obtained were acceptable (Recovery ≥ 90%).

Abstract
A new fluorescence probe constructed with a multifunctional nanocomposite, Fe3O4-ZnS:Mn2+/SiO2-NH2, was successfully synthesized and then used to detect folic acid in real serum samples. The nanocomposite was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and physical property measurement system. With the addition of analyte, the Fe3O4-ZnS:Mn2+/SiO2-NH2 composite and folic acid formed a new complex because cross-linking of the amino and carboxyl groups participated in the condensation reaction. Then, the energy of quantum dots was transferred to the complex and led to quenching of the fluorescence. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity decreased significantly as the concentration of folic acid increased, and the fluorescence quenching ratio F0/F was related to the folic acid concentration in the range from 0.1 to 5 μg mL-1. This method was used for detecting folic acid in real serum samples and gave recoveries in the range of 89.0%-96.0%, with relative standard deviations of 1.2%-3.9%. The detection limit was 9.6 ng mL-1 (S/N = 3). These satisfactory and simple results showed the great potential of this fluorescence probe in the field of pharmaceutical analysis.

Abstract
Folic acid (FA) is an electroactive compound of biological origin. It helps our body to produce and maintain healthy cells. It can significantly reduce the occurrence of neural tube defects and also prevents change in DNA structure. FA deficiency can lead to various health risks. Therefore, a sensitive, specific, and reproducible way of FA detection is essential. A number of analytical methods are in practice for the quantification of FA. However, electroanalytical methods are attracting much attention because of their advantage over conventional methods, as they are fast, simple, sensitive, and cost effective. Moreover, modification of electrodes offers control over size and morphology which allows miniaturization for applicability in portable electrochemical devices.

Abstract
Background Analysis of folic acid (FA) is not an easy task because of its presence in lower concentrations, its lower stability under acidic conditions, and its sensitiveness against light and high temperature. The present study is concerned with the development and validation of an automated environmentally friendly pre-column derivatization combined by solid-phase enrichment (SPEn) to determine low levels of FA. Results Cerium (IV) trihydroxyhydroperoxide (CTH) as a packed oxidant reactor has been used for oxidative cleavage of FA into highly fluorescent product, 2-amino-4-hydroxypteridine-6-carboxylic acid. FA was injected into a carrier stream of 0.04 M phosphate buffer, pH 3.4 at a flow-rate of 0.25 mL/min. The sample zone containing the analyte was passed through the CTH reactor thermostated at 40°C, and the fluorescent product was trapped and enriched on a head of small ODS column (10 mm x 4.6 mm i.d., 5 μm particle size). The enriched product was then back-flush eluted by column-switching from the small ODS column to the detector with a greener mobile phase consisting of ethanol and phosphate buffer (0.04M, pH 3.4) in the ratio of 5:95 (v/v). The eluent was monitored fluorimetrically at emission and excitation wavelengths of 463 and 367 nm, respectively. The calibration graph was linear over concentrations of FA in the range of 1.25-50 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.49 ng/mL. Conclusion A new simple and sensitive green analytical procedure including on-line pre-column derivatization combined by SPEn has been developed for the routine quality control and dosage form assay of FA at very low concentration level. The method was a powerful analytical technique that had excellent sensitivity, sufficient accuracy and required relatively simple and inexpensive instrumentation.

Abstract
This paper demonstrated the selective determination of folic acid (FA) in the presence of important physiological interferents, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) at physiological pH using electropolymerized film of 5-amino-2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (p-AMT) modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode. Bare GC electrode fails to determine the concentration of FA in the presence of AA and UA due to the surface fouling caused by the oxidized products of AA and FA. However, the p-AMT film modified electrode not only separates the voltammetric signals of AA, UA and FA with potential differences of 170 and 410 mV between AA-UA and UA-FA, respectively but also shows higher oxidation current for these analytes. The p-AMT film modified electrode displays an excellent selectivity towards the determination of FA even in the presence of 200-fold AA and 100-fold UA. Using amperometric method, we achieved the lowest detection of 75 nM UA and 100 nM each AA and FA. The amperometric current response was increased linearly with increasing FA concentration in the range of 1.0 x 10(-7)-8.0 x 10(-4)M and the detection limit was found to be 2.3 x 10(-10)M (S/N=3). The practical application of the present modified electrode was successfully demonstrated by determining the concentration of FA in human blood serum samples.

Abstract
Solutions propelling devices are fundamental components of a flow-based analytical manifold. In this work different manifold configurations were implemented to evaluate the performance of multiple piezoelectric micro-pumps used as solutions insertion and propulsion devices. The micro-pumps are piezo-actuated micro-diaphragm pumps with passive check valves characterised by a small compact size and low power demands, and are able to produce reproducible flow rates of up to 4 mL min(-1). The flow rate is controlled by the frequency of the piezoelectric actuator (up to 20 Hz). As an additional feature, piezoelectric micro-pumps actuation generates a pulsed flowing stream that ensures a faster sample/reagent mixing contributing to improved reaction development. The developed flow approach was assessed in the spectrophotometric determination of gabapentin in pharmaceutical preparations upon reaction with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate in alkaline medium. Distinct flow manifold configurations were designed for achievement of different solutions management. Linear calibrations plots for gabapentin concentrations of up to 150 mg L(-1), with relative standard deviations of less than 1.50% (n=10) and a sample throughput of about 28 determinations per hour, were obtained.

Abstract
This article describes a multicommutated flow injection-solid phase spectroscopy system implemented with photochemically induced fluorescence for the determination of flufenamic acid (FFA). A strongly fluorescent photoproduct is generated when FFA is irradiated online under UV light in a strong sulfuric medium. The photoproduct generated is retained on C(18) silica gel (which fills the detection area of the flow cell) and directly monitored on the active solid support at 258/442 nm (lambda(ex)/lambda(em)). After maximum signal recording, the sensing zone is regenerated by eluting the retained photoproduct with an appropriate H(2)SO(4)/MeOH solution. The sensor, completely automated, is based on the use of three-way solenoid valves conveniently operated by a homemade multicommutation software written in Java language. The system is calibrated at 10 and 60s for sampling time, showing detection limits of 1.28 x 10(-9) and 5.33 x 10(-10) molL(-1) and sampling rates of 38 and 28 h(-1), respectively, with relative standard deviations of 0.9 and 1.2%. The applicability of the method is demonstrated for the determination of FFA in human serum, human urine, and a pharmaceutical preparation without any pre-treatment. Good recovery levels were achieved between 90.5 and 103.7%.

Abstract
In this paper, the conversion of azoxystrobin in a strongly fluorescent degradation product by UV irradiation with quantitative purposes and its fluorimetric determination are reported for the first time. A multicommuted flow injection-solid phase spectroscopy (FI-SPS) system combined with photochemically-induced fluorescence (PIF) is developed for the determination of azoxystrobin in grapes, must and wine. Grape samples were homogenized and extracted with methanol and further cleaned-up by solid-phase extraction on C(18) silica gel. Wine samples were solid-phase extracted on C(18) sorbent using dichloromethane as eluent. Recoveries of azoxystrobin from spiked grapes (0.5-2.0 mg Kg(-1)), must (0.5-2.0 microg mL(-1)) and wine (0.5-2.0 microg mL(-1)) were 84.0-87.6%, 95.5-105.9% and 88.5-111.2%, respectively. The quantification limit for grapes was 0.021 mg Kg(-1), being within European Union regulations, and 18 microg L(-1) and 8 microg L(-1) for must and wine, respectively.

Abstract
Nowadays, the trend towards more compact, smarter and simpler devices is generally recognized as one of the most challenging aspects in the development of analytical instrumentation. Modern flow-based procedures do not escape this tendency. The level of integration and automation and the operational functionality of Multi-pumping flow systems (MPFS) would, in most of the situations, meet this requirement. The essential elements of MPFS are multiple solenoid actuated micro-pumps strategically positioned in the flow manifold, which are accountable for solutions insertion, propelling and commutation, conditioning the establishment and subsequent detection of the reaction zone. Being the only active components of the flow manifold they provide a great operational simplicity and assure a straightforward run-time control of important analytical variables. Moreover, the reduction of active components minimizes the probability of occurrence of equipment failures, malfunctions or errors. The low size and low cost of solenoid micro-pumps make them ideal tools to build up compact environmentally friendly analytical systems, which are characterized by low solutions consumptions and the minimisation of hazardous waste generation. Furthermore, the reproducible pulsed flowing stream produced by micro-pumps actuation has proven to be a valuable feature regarding sample/reagent mixing and reaction zone homogenisation.

Abstract
A simple, sensitive and specific flow-injection spectrofluorimetric method has been developed for the determination of folic acid in pharmaceuticals. The method is based on use of a lead dioxide solid-phase reactor for on-line oxidation of folic acid into a strongly fluorescent compound with a maximum excitation wavelength of 281 nm and an emission wavelength of 450 nm. Under optimum conditions the fluorescence intensity of oxidation product is proportional to the concentration of folic acid over the range 0.008-2.5 microg mL(-1). The detection limit is 0.0001 microg mL(-1), the relative standard deviation is 0.85% for 11 replicate determinations of 0.05 microg mL(-1) folic acid, and the sample throughput is 20 h(-1). In combination with an on-line filter and dilution, an automated drug-dissolution system was established. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of folic acid in pharmaceutical preparations and dissolution testing.

Abstract
A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, with a combination of fluorescence and ultraviolet detectors, to determine the folate forms present in commercial macroalgae products form northwest Spain as part of nutritional studies in dehydrated and canned seaweeds is reported. The method includes extraction of folates from seaweed by heat treatment, deconjugation of folate polyglutamates by incubation with hog kidney conjugase and purification by solid-phase extraction (SPE) with strong anion-exchange (SAX) cartridges. Separation was achieved with a Tracer Extrasil ODS 5 microm 25 cm x 0.4 cm column using acetonitrile and potassium phosphate buffer (pH 2.21 as mobile phase. Good results were obtained with respect to repeatability (relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) < or = 4.12%) and recovery (> or = 90.80%). The amount of folate (as folic acid) in the six species ranged from 61.4 to 161.6 microg per 100 g dry mass. In all the seaweeds studied (Himanthalia elongata, Laminaria ochroleuca, Palmaria spp., Undaria pinnatifida and Porphyra spp. and Saccorhiza polychides) the single most abundant form is 5-CH3-H4-folate, except Porphyra and Himanthalia.

Abstract
Upon on-line photochemical reaction carbamazepine (CBZ) can be converted to a strong fluorescent compound which has a maximum emission wavelength of 478 nm and maximum excitation wavelength of 254 nm. Acidity of reaction medium and the acid type were found to be critical for the on-line photochemically induced fluorescence, dilute hydrochloric acid being the most suitable. Based on these observations, a flow injection photochemical spectrofluorimetric approach for determination of the drug was developed. At optimized conditions, a detection limit of 0.08 ng x ml(-1) CBZ was achieved at the sampling rate of 80 h(-1). Eleven determinations of a 100 ng ml(-1) CBZ standard solution gave a RSD of 0.45%. A linear calibration curve was obtained in the CBZ concentration range of 2-250 ng x ml(-1). The developed method was successfully applied to assay the CBZ contents in pharmaceutical tablets.

Abstract
Novel coupling reagents are used for the simple and sensitive spectrophotometric determination of folic acid either in pure form or in its pharmaceutical preparations. The methods are based on the probable diazotization of the p-aminobenzoylglutamic acid obtained after reductive clevage of folic acid, followed by either coupling with iminodibenzyl to give a violet product with lambda(max) of 580nm or coupling with 3-aminophenol to produce an orange yellow-colored product with lambda(max) of 460nm. Sodium molybdate and pyrocatechol are used in the third method and the pale red-colored product formed has a lambda(max) of 490nm. The methods are highly reproducible and have been applied to the determination of folic acid in tablets and the results compare favorably with the official method. Common excipients used as additives in pharmaceutical preparations do not interfere in the proposed methods.
