Sensitive and rapid flow injection analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides in water with micellar-enhanced photochemically induced fluorescence detection

Anti-Agglomeration Behavior and Sensing Assay of Chlorsulfuron Based on Acetamiprid-Gold Nanoparticles

Monitoring of low levels of chlorsulfuron in environmental water samples is important. Although several detection methods have been developed, they all have some drawbacks, such as being time-consuming, requiring expensive instruments and experienced operators, and consuming large volumes of organic solvents. There is an urgent need for a simple, rapid, and inexpensive detection method for chlorsulfuron. Herein, such a method was developed using anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the presence of acetamiprid in agricultural irrigation water samples. Aggregation of the AuNPs was induced by acetamiprid, and this produced a distinct color change from Bordeaux red to blue. However, the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between chlorsulfuron and acetamiprid could inhibit AuNP aggregation. The effect of chlorsulfuron on the anti-agglomeration behavior of AuNPs was monitored by ultraviolet–visiblespectroscopy (UV-Vis) and the naked eye over a concentration range 0.1–100 mg/L. The detection limit for chlorsulfuron was 0.025 mg/L (signal-to-noise ratio of three). This colorimetric method was successfully applied to the determination of chlorsulfuron in spiked tap water and agricultural irrigation water with satisfactory recoveries (76.3%–94.2%).

Photo-induced fluorescence of magnesium derivatives of tetracycline antibiotics in wastewater samples

An analytical strategy, for the determination of tetracyclines (TCs), based on a HPLC system coupled with a photo-reactor followed by post-column derivatization was developed. Higher fluorescence emission after coupling the resulting photo-fragments with magnesium ions was observed for the determination of minocycline (MC), epitetracycline (ETC), tetracycline (TC) and doxycycline (DC). The manifold included a HPLC system with a photo-reactor (PTFE tubing helically coiled around a low-pressure mercury lamp), a mixing T-piece and a fluorescence detector. The derivatization reagent was delivered at 0.5 mL min(-1) by a pump. After HPLC separation using a gradient system with a mobile phase containing oxalic acid 0.02 M and acetonitrile, TCs were irradiated for 60 s, and the resulting photo-fragments were mixed with the post-column derivatization reagent, and the magnesium derivatives of TCs were detected by fluorimetry (lambda(exc) 386 nm, lambda(em) 500 nm). The results obtained showed a significant increase of sensitivity due to photodegration of TCs, 45.4%, 37.6% and 25.3% for MC, TC and ETC respectively. For DC an increase of only 1.5% was observed. The developed method was successfully applied to TCs determination in hospital and municipal wastewater samples using solid phase extraction with Oasis HLB cartridges. The LOQs were 0.25, 0.15, 01 and 0.25 microg L(-1) for TC, ETC, MC and DC, respectively. The recovery values oscillated between 107.1% and 92.4% for fortification of 2.5 microg L(-1) of each antibiotic.

Simultaneous flow-injection solid-phase fluorometric determination of thiabendazole and metsulfuron methyl using photochemical derivatization

A flow-through optosensor implemented with photochemically induced fluorescence (PIF) is reported for the simultaneous determination of thiabendazole (TBZ) and metsulfuron methyl (MET). TBZ is determined by measuring its native fluorescence once retained on the solid support filling the flow-cell of a FI-system. On the other hand, a strongly fluorescent photoproduct from MET is generated on-line in micellar medium by UV irradiation and monitored in a similar way to TBZ. MET photoproduct and TBZ are separated by placing in the flow-system a minicolumn, filled with C(18) silica gel, which allows their sequential arrival to the detection area. The sorption of the species on the solid support in the detection area provides a noticeable improvement in sensitivity and selectivity when comparing with their determination in homogeneous solution. The detection limits and RSDs for TBZ and MET are 2.5 and 3.3 ng ml(-1) and 1.1 and 2.4%, respectively. The method is successfully applied to environmental water samples.

Flow-through optosensing device implemented with photochemically-induced fluorescence for the rapid and simple screening of metsulfuron methyl in environmental waters

This paper describes the implementation of a flow-injection solid phase spectroscopy (FI-SPS) system with photochemically induced fluorescence (PIF) in micellar medium for the determination of metsulfuron-methyl (MET). The micelles containing a strongly fluorescent photoproduct generated after UV irradiation of the herbicide are strongly retained on C(18) silica gel filling the flow-cell placed in the detection area and the photoproduct is monitored at 323 and 378 nm for excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. The solid support is easily regenerated for subsequent sample injections (at least up to 500 cycles tested). The system was calibrated for two injection volumes, 300 and 1000 microl. The detection limits and relative standard deviations were 0.71 and 0.14 ng ml(-1), and 4.5 and 3.3% for each injection volume, respectively. The system shows a very high throughput, 34 (300 microl) and 36 (1000 microl) analysis per hour. The optosensor was successfully applied to the herbicide determination in river, well and irrigation waters (recovery ranges from 96.0 to 106.0%).

Rapid quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) soil extracts by synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS)

Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) was directly applied to rapidly quantify selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene) in aqueous hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) soil extract solutions from a variety of aged contaminated soils containing four different PAHs. The method was optimized and validated. The results show that SFS can be used to analyse benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene in HPCD based soil extracts with high sensitivity and selectivity. The linear calibration ranges were 4.0x10(-6)-1.0x10(-3)mM for benzo[a]pyrene and 6.0x10(-6)-1.2x10(-3)mM for pyrene in 10mM HPCD aqueous solution alone. The detection limits according to the error propagation theory for benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene were 3.9x10(-6) and 5.4x10(-6)mM, respectively. A good agreement between SFS and HPLC was reached for both determinations of PAHs in HPCD alone and in soil HPCD extracts. Hence, SFS is a potential means to simplify the present non-exhaustive hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD)-based extraction technique for the evaluation of PAH bioavailability in soil.

Determination of azoxystrobin residues in grapes, musts and wines with a multicommuted flow-through optosensor implemented with photochemically induced fluorescence

In this paper, the conversion of azoxystrobin in a strongly fluorescent degradation product by UV irradiation with quantitative purposes and its fluorimetric determination are reported for the first time. A multicommuted flow injection-solid phase spectroscopy (FI-SPS) system combined with photochemically-induced fluorescence (PIF) is developed for the determination of azoxystrobin in grapes, must and wine. Grape samples were homogenized and extracted with methanol and further cleaned-up by solid-phase extraction on C(18) silica gel. Wine samples were solid-phase extracted on C(18) sorbent using dichloromethane as eluent. Recoveries of azoxystrobin from spiked grapes (0.5-2.0 mg Kg(-1)), must (0.5-2.0 microg mL(-1)) and wine (0.5-2.0 microg mL(-1)) were 84.0-87.6%, 95.5-105.9% and 88.5-111.2%, respectively. The quantification limit for grapes was 0.021 mg Kg(-1), being within European Union regulations, and 18 microg L(-1) and 8 microg L(-1) for must and wine, respectively.

Environmental analysis based on luminescence in organized supramolecular systems

The use of organized supramolecular systems-including micellar media and cyclodextrin inclusion complexes-combined with luminescence techniques in the study and determination of compounds and elements of environmental interest from 1990 to 2005 is reviewed. Analyses of environmental samples performed using fluorescence, photochemically induced fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy as well as liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and flow injection with luminescence detection in the presence of these organized media are described in detail.

Fluorimetric Determination of Histamine in Fish Using Micellar Media and Fluorescamine as Labelling Reagent

An analytical method based on the use of fluorescamine to produce a fluorescent derivative with histamine and combined with micellar-enhanced fluorescence detection of the formed complex is developed for the sensitive and rapid determination of histamine in fishes. The fluorescence properties of the obtained complex in water and micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and brij-700 are reported. Physicochemical variables influencing the sensitivity of the method (pH, micellar, fluorescamine and NaCl relative concentrations) have been optimized. The stability of the formed complex, as shown by kinetic study, depends on the pH of the solution. Linear calibration curves allowing an effective histamine determination were established with large linear dynamic range (LDR), and low limits of detection (LOD) between 0.5 and 33 ng mL-1, according to the solvent. Application to the analysis of fish samples (sardines) yielded satisfactory results. The method seems to be suitable for environmental fish quality control.

Flow injection spectrofluorimetric study of the supramolecular interaction between beta-cyclodextrin and dequalinium chloride and its analytical application

The supramolecular interaction of dequalinium chloride (DQC) and beta-cyclodextrin has been studied by flow injection spectrofluorimetry. The results showed that beta-CD reacted with DQC to form a 1:1 host:guest complex with an apparent association constant of 4.99 x 10(2) L mol(-1). Based on the enhancement of the fluorescence intensity of DQC, a flow injection spectrofluorometric method for the determination of DQC in bulk aqueous solution in the presence of beta-CD was developed. The linear range was 0.0412-30.00 microg mL(-1). The detection limit was 12.3 ng mL(-1) with a sampling rate of 80 h(-1). There was no interference from the excipients normally used in tablets and serum compositions. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of DQC in tablets and serum.

Application of coupled-column liquid chromatography combined with post-column photochemically induced fluorimetry derivatization and fluorescence detection to the determination of pyrethroid insecticides in vegetable samples

This study reports the first application of coupled-column liquid chromatography-photochemically induced fluorimetry-fluorescence detection (LC-LC-PIF-FD), demonstrating its potential for the quantitative and selective detection of seven pyrethroids in vegetable samples such as cucumber, green bean, tomato and aubergine. An internal surface reversed-phase (ISRP) column coupled to a C18 column for analyte clean-up and determination were used, respectively. In comparison with a C18 column, the ISRP substantially improved the separation between analytes and interferences from the vegetable matrix. The limits of detection ranged from 0.01 to 0.22 microg kg(-1) in the vegetable samples (equivalent to 0.01 and 0.13 microg L(-1) in the extract injected), and limits of determination ranged from 0.56 to 8.33 microg kg(-1) in the vegetable samples (equivalent to 0.34 and 5.00 microg L(-1) in the extract injected). Samples were extracted into dichloromethane to yield mean recoveries at two levels of concentration between 72.8 and 110.0% in all cases. Relative standard deviations were lower than 11%.
