Abstract
The interaction of taurine-salicylaldehyde Schiff base copper(II) (Cu(TSSB)2(2+)) complex with DNA was explored by using UV-vis, fluorescence spectrophotometry, and voltammetry. In pH 7.4 Tris-HCl buffer solution, the binding constant of the Cu(TSSB)2(2+) complex interaction with DNA was 3.49 x 10(4) L mol(-1). Moreover, due to the fluorescence enhancing of Cu(TSSB)2(2+) complex in the presence of DNA, a method for determination of DNA with Cu(TSSB)2(2+) complex as a fluorescence probe was developed. The fluorescence spectra indicated that the maximum excitation and emission wavelength were 389 nm and 512 nm, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the calibration graphs are linear over the range of 0.03-9.03 microg mL(-1) for calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA), 0.10-36 microg mL(-1) for yeast DNA and 0.01-10.01 microg mL(-1) for salmon DNA (SM-DNA), respectively. The corresponding detection limits are 7 ng mL(-1) for CT-DNA, 3 ng mL(-1) for yeast DNA and 3 ng mL(-1) for SM-DNA. Using this method, DNA in synthetic samples was determined with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Nucleic acid can greatly enhance the fluorescence intensity of quercetin in HMTA-HCl (pH 5.5) buffer. The enhanced intensity is in proportion to the concentration of nucleic acids in the range 5.0 x 10(-9) to 1.0 x 10(-6) g/mL for fsDNA, 5.0 x 10(-9) to 7.0 x 10(-7) g/mL for ctDNA and 5.0 x 10(-9) to 1.0 x 10(-6) g/mL for yRNA, and their detection limits (S/N = 3) are 3.5 x 10(-9), 7.8 x 10(-10) and 2.6 x 10(-9) g/mL, respectively. In comparison with most reported fluorescent probes for the determination of nucleic acids, the proposed probe has higher sensitivity and lower toxicity. The interaction investigation indicates that quercetin binds with double-strand DNA in groove binding mode, resulting in fluorescence enhancement of this system.

Abstract
It was found that the fluorescence of Tb(3+)-epinephrine (E) complex can be enhanced by both bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), and stabilized by ascorbic acid (AA). It is considered that the fluorescence enhancement of the Tb(3+)-E-BSA-AA-SDS system originates not only from the hydrophobic microenvironment provided by BSA-SDS, but also from the energy transfer from BSA to Tb(3+) in this system. Therefore, a new fluorescence method for the determination of protein concentrations as low as 1.3 x 10(-9) g mL(-1) BSA is established using Tb(3+)-epinephrine complex as probe. The method has been applied for the determination of BSA and human serum albumin in actual samples, and the results obtained are satisfactory. Compared with other fluorescence methods, this method is simpler and more sensitive for the determination of protein. The mechanism of the fluorescence enhancement of the system is studied in detail.

Abstract
A new system for the determination of nucleic acid by rare earth metallic porphyrin of [tetra-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)]-Tb3+ [T(3-MO-4HP)-Tb3+] porphyrin as fluorescence spectral probe has been developed in this paper. Nucleic acid can enhance the fluorescence intensity of the T(3-MO-4HP)-Tb3+ porphyrin in the presence of bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate sodium salt(AOT) micelle. In pH 8.00 Tris-HCl buffer solution, under optimum conditions, the enhanced fluorescence intensity is in proportion to the concentration of nucleic acids in the range of 0.05-3.00 microg mL(-1) for calf thymus DNA (ct DNA) and 0.03-4.80 microg mL(-1) for fish sperm DNA(fs DNA). Their detection limits are 0.03 and 0.01 microg mL(-1), respectively. In addition, the binding interaction mechanism between T(3-MO-4HP)-Tb(3+) porphyrin and ct DNA is also investigated by resonance scattering and fluorescence spectra. The maximum binding number is calculated by molar ratio method. The new system can be used for the determination of nucleic acid in pig liver, yielding satisfactory results.

Abstract
It is found that nucleic acids can enhance the fluorescence intensity of yttrium(III) (Y(3+))-rutin in presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) system. In hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA)-HCl buffer, the maximum enhanced fluorescence is produced, with maximum excitation and emission wavelengths at 452 and 520 nm, respectively. Based on this, a new fluorimetric method of determination of nucleic acids is proposed. Under optimum conditions, the enhanced fluorescence intensity is proportion to the concentration of nucleic acids in the range of 1.0 x 10(-7) to 1.0 x 10(-5)g/ml for fish sperm DNA (fsDNA), 1.0 x 10(-7) to 4.6 x 10(-6)g/ml for yeast RNA (yRNA), their detection limits (S/N=3) are 7.5 x 10(-8), 8.0 x 10(-8)g/ml, respectively. The interaction mechanism is also studied.

Abstract
It is found that in hexamethylene tetramine (HMTA)-HCl buffer of pH 7.00, nucleic acids can quench the resonance light scattering (RLS) of europium (III) (Eu3+)-2-thenoyltrifluoroacetne (TTA)-1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) system. Based on this, a sensitive method for the determination of nucleic acids is proposed. The experiments indicate that under the optimum conditions, the quenched RLS intensity is in proportion to the concentration of nucleic acids in the range of 1.0x10(-10) to 2.0x10(-6) g ml-1 for fish sperm (fsDNA), 1.0x10(-11) to 1.0x10(-6) g ml-1 for yeast RNA (yRNA), 5.0x10(-11) to 5.0x10(-7) g ml-1 for calf thymus DNA (ctDNA). Their detection limits (S/N=3) are 0.03, 0.006 and 0.002 ng ml-1, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method is the most sensitive RLS method for the determination of nucleic acids so far. The interaction between nucleic acids and Eu3+-TTA-Phen is also discussed.

Abstract
In Tris-HCl buffer (pH 8.0), the fluorescence of Pyronine G emitted at 552 nm was quenched by nucleic acids when excited at 525 nm. Adding N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a sensitive media can enhance the sensitivity greatly. Based on the fluorescence reactions sensitive fluorimetric methods for nucleic acids at nanogram levels were proposed. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curves were linear in the range of 0.0032 - 2.5 microg mL(-1) for ct DNA and 0.0024 - 2.5 microg mL(-1) for hs DNA. The limits of determination were 3.2 ng mL(-1) and 2.4 ng mL(-1) respectively. This method has good selectivity and high sensitivity. It has been applied to the determination of DNA in the synthetic samples and real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The second-order scattering technique (SOS), using a common spectrofluorometer, was first developed as a sensitive instrumental analysis method for determination of the ribonucleic acid (RNA). The results indicate that RNA had a weak SOS peak and the Tb(III) ion can greatly enhance the SOS intensity of RNA with the maximum peak located at 612.0 nm. Mechanism study shows that the peak results from the long-range assembly of Tb(III) ion on the molecular surface of RNA. At the pH 7.50 and with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) (6.0 x 10(-5)M), the enhanced SOS intensity was in proportion to the concentration of RNA in the range of 2.0 x 10(-8) to 2.0 x 10(-5)g/ml. The detection limit was 1.96 ng/ml. The relative standard deviation (five replicates) was within +/-5% in the linear range. This method has been used satisfactorily for the determination of both synthetic and real samples. In comparison with most other methods for the determination of ribonucleic acids, this method is more sensitive.

Abstract
The co-luminescence effect in a terbium-gadolinium-protein-sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) system is reported here. Based on it, the sensitive quantitative analysis of protein at nanogram levels is established. The co-luminescence mechanism is studied using fluorescence, resonance light scattering (RLS), absorption spectroscopy and NMR measurement. It is considered that protein could be unfolded by SDBS, then a efficacious intramolecular fluorescent energy transfer occurs from unfolded protein to rare earth ions through SDBS acting as a "transfer bridge" to enhance the emission fluorescence of Tb3+ in this ternary complex of Tb-SDBS-BSA, where energy transfer from protein to SDBS by aromatic ring stacking is the most important step. Cooperating with the intramolecular energy transfer above is the intermolecular energy transfer between the simultaneous existing complexes of both Tb3+ and Gd3+. The fluorescence quantum yield is increased by an energy-insulating sheath, which is considered to be another reason for the resulting enhancement of the fluorescence. Förster theory is used to calculate the distribution of enhancing factors and has led to a greater understanding of the mechanisms of energy transfer.

Abstract
Spectral probes (or labels) have been widely used for the investigation and determination of proteins and have made considerable progress. Traditional luminescence probes include fluorescent derivatizing reagents, fluorescent probes and chemiluminescence probes which continue to develop. Of them, near infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes are especially suitable for the determination of biomolecules including proteins, so their development has been rapid. Novel luminescence probes (such as nanoparticle probes and molecular beacons) and resonance light scattering probes recently appeared in the literature. Preliminary results indicate that they possess great potential for ultrasensitive protein detection. This review summarizes recent developments of the above-mentioned probes for proteins and 195 references are cited.

Lanthanide fluorescence enhancement on complexation with calf thymus DNA was studied in aqueous solution. The DNA sensitized and enhanced fluorescence of terbium and europium by nearly two orders of magnitude. By applying this ligand sensitized lanthanide fluorescence enhancement, DNA could be estimated at 10 ppb level. Further, effect of addition of TOPO in Triton X-100 micellar medium to Tb-DNA complex in solution was also studied. On addition of TOPO, no synergistic terbium fluorescence enhancement was observed.

Abstract
The interaction of berberine with nucleic acid in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) in aqueous solution has been studied by spectrophotometry and resonance light scattering (RLS) spectroscopy. At pH 7.30, the RLS signals of berberine were greatly enhanced by nucleic acid in the region of 300-600 nm characterized by four peaks at 324.0, 386.5, 416.5 and 465.0 nm. The binding properties were examined by using a Scatchard plot based on the measurement of enhanced RLS data at 416.5 nm. Under optimum conditions, the increase of RLS intensity of this system at 416.5 nm is proportional to the concentration of nucleic acid. The linear range is 7.5 x 10(-9)-7.5 x 10(-5) g ml(-1) for calf thymus DNA, 7.5 x 10(-9)-2.5 x 10(-5) g ml(-1) for herring sperm DNA, and 5.0 x 10(-9)-2.5 x 10(-5) g ml(-1) for yeast RNA. The detection limits (S/N = 3) are 2.1 ng ml(-1) for calf thymus DNA, 6.5 ng ml(-1) for herring sperm DNA and 3.5 ng ml(-1) for yeast RNA, respectively. Three synthetic samples were analyzed satisfactorily.
