Abstract
Prasanna K. Mohanty, a great scientist, a great teacher and above all a great human being, left us more than a year ago (on March 9, 2013). He was a pioneer in the field of photosynthesis research; his contributions are many and wide-ranging. In the words of Jack Myers, he would be a "photosynthetiker" par excellence. He remained deeply engaged with research almost to the end of his life; we believe that generations of researchers still to come will benefit from his thorough and enormous work. We present here his life and some of his contributions to the field of Photosynthesis Research. The response to this tribute was overwhelming and we have included most of the tributes, which we received from all over the world. Prasanna Mohanty was a pioneer in the field of "Light Regulation of Photosynthesis", a loving and dedicated teacher-unpretentious, idealistic, and an honest human being.

Abstract
Photosystem I (PSI) is one of two photosynthetic reaction centers present in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria and catalyzes the reduction of ferredoxin and the oxidation of cytochrome c or plastocyanin. The PSI primary chlorophyll donor, which is oxidized in the primary electron-transfer events, is a heterodimer of chl a and a' called P700. It has been suggested that protein relaxation accompanies light-induced electron transfer in this reaction center (Dashdorj, N.; Xu, W.; Martinsson, P.; Chitnis, P. R.; Savikhin, S. Biophys. J. 2004, 86, 3121. Kim, S.; Sacksteder, C. A.; Bixby, K. A.; Barry, B. A. Biochemistry 2001, 40, 15384). To investigate the details of electron transfer and relaxation events in PSI, we have employed several experimental approaches. First, we report a pH-dependent viscosity effect on P700+ reduction; this result suggests a role for proton transfer in the PSI electron-transfer reactions. Second, we find that changes in hydration alter the rate of P700+ reduction and the interactions of P700 with the protein environment. This result suggests a role for bound water in electron transfer to P700+. Third, we present evidence that deuteration of the tyrosine aromatic side chain perturbs the vibrational spectrum, associated with P700+ reduction. We attribute this result to a linkage between CH-pi interactions and electron transfer to P700+.

Abstract
The Photosystem I electron acceptor complex was characterized by optical flash photolysis and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy after treatment of a subchloroplast particle with lithium dodecyl sulfate (LDS). The following properties were observed after 60 s of incubation with 1% LDS followed by rapid freezing. (i) ESR centers A and B were not observed during or after illumination of the sample at 19 K, although the P-700+ radical at g = 2.0026 showed a large, reversible light-minus-dark difference signal. (ii) Center 'X', characterized by g factors of 2.08, 1.88 and 1.78, exhibited reversible photoreduction at 8 K in the absence of reduced centers A and B. (iii) The backreaction kinetics at 8 K between P-700, observed at g = 2.0026, and center X, observed at g = 1.78, was 0.30 s. (iv) The amplitudes of the reversible g = 2.0026 radical observed at 19 K and the 1.2 ms optical 698 nm transient observed at 298 K were diminished to the same extent when treated with 1% LDS at room temperature for periods of 1 and 45 min. We interpret the strict correlation between the properties and lifetimes of the optical P-700+ A2 reaction pair and the ESR P-700+ center X- reaction pair to indicate that signal A2 and center X represent the same iron-sulfur center in Photosystem I.

Abstract
In this review, the main research developments that have led to the current simplified picture of photosystem I are presented. This is followed by a discussion of some conflicting reports and unresolved questions in the literature. The following points are made: (1) the evidence is contradictory on whether P700, the primary donor, is a monomer or dimer of chlorophyll although at this time the balacnce of the evidence points towards a monomeric structure for P700 when in the triplet state; (2) there is little evidence that the iron sulfur centers FA and FB act in series as tertiary acceptors and it is as likely that they act in parallel under physiological conditions; (3) a role for FX, probably another iron sulfur centrer, as an obligatory electron carrier in forward electron transfer has not been proven. Some evidence indicates that its reduction could represent a pathway different to that involving FA and FB; (4) the decay of the acceptor 'A2 (-)' as defined by optical spectroscopy corresponds with 700(+) % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafeart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamOramaaBa% aaleaadaqdaaqaaiaadIfaaaaabeaaaaa!37D1!\[F_{\overline X } \] recombination under some circumstances but under other conditions it probably corresponds with P700(+) A1 (-) recombination; (5) P700(+) A1 (-) recombination as originally observed by optical spectroscopy is probably due to the decay of the P700 triplet state; (6) the acceptor A1 (-) as defined by EPR may be a special semiquinone molecule; (7) A0 is probably a chlorophyll a molecule which acts as the primary acceptor. Recombination of P700(+) A0 (-) gives rise to the P700 triplet state.A working model for electron transfer in photosystem I is presented, its general features are discussed and comparisons with other photosystems are made.

Abstract
Triton-solubilized Photosystem I particles from spinach chloroplasts exhibit largely reversible P-700 absorption changes over the temperature range from 4.2 K to room temperature. For anaerobic samples treated with dithionite and neutral red at pH 10 and illuminated during cooling, a brief (1 microseconds) saturating flash produces absorption changes in the long wavelength region that decay in 0.95 +/- 0.2 ms from 4.2 to 50 K. Above 80 K a faster (100 +/- 30 microseconds) component dominates in the decay process, but this disappears again above about 180 K. The major decay at temperatures above 200 K occurs in about 1 ms. The difference spectrum of these absorption changes between 500 and 900 nm closely resembles that of P-700. Using ascorbate and 2.6-dichlorophenolindophenol as the reducing system with a sample of Photosystem I particles cooled in darkness to 4.2 K, a fully reversible signal is seen upon both the first and subsequent flashes. The decay time in this case is 0.9 +/- 0.3 ms.

Abstract
Light-induced absorption changes associated with the primary photochemical reaction and dark relaxation in Photosystem I were measured at various low temperatures. A possible temperature-dependent long-range electron tunneling process was suggested to account for the unique temperature dependence of the dark decay process. The kinetics of the light-induced absorption changes are in good agreement with the light-induced EPR changes reported earlier (Ke, B., Sugahara, K., Shaw, E.R., Hansen, R. E., Hamilton, W. D. and Beinert, H. (1974) Biochim, Biophys. Acta 368, 401--408) for the same Photosystem I subchloroplast fragment at comparable temperatures. All absorption changes between 400 and 725 nm at 86degreesK have identical kinetics. The light-minus-dark difference spectrum is very similar to that of P-700 at room temperature, with an additional prominent positive change at 690 nm. Possible contributions by P-430 to the blue and red spectral changes were discussed. It was demonstrated that the intensity of the measuring beam has a drastic effect on the light-induced absorption changes of Photosystem I at low temperatures. Various pretreatments of the Photosystem I fragments such as those that photochemically (or chemically) oxidize the primary donor or photoreduce the primary acceptor abolish the subsequent photochemical reaction. Continuous illumination of the Photosystem I fragments before and during freezing has the same effect. In the temperature range of --20 to --60degreesC, an unusual counter absorption change as well as a counter EPR change were observed.

Abstract
The temperature dependency of the rate of biological electron transport is interpreted as evolving from a contraction of the electron transport components. A theoretical expression for this temperature dependency is derived in terms of the coefficient of linear expansion (a) of the protein components. Using this expression alpha is calculated for several electron transport systems and shown to be similar to alpha-values of synthetic polymers. A discontinuity in alpha is shown to be present in all biological electron transport reactions at ca. 150 K. This discontinuity is interpreted as a change in the intramolecular bonding of the electron transport protein units.
