Abstract
The study of the formation of microstructures during the interaction of a protonated drug-like compound (API) with a maleic acid monoanion sheds light on the assembly processes in an aqueous solution at the molecular level. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations made it possible to find initial hydrogen bonding motifs during the assembly process, leading to the formation of heterodimers and trimers. The process of trimer formation [protonated API—maleic acid monoanion—protonated API] proceeds through the formation of three intermolecular H-bonds by the CO2− group of the maleic acid monoanion in both systems. The total enthalpy/energy of these H-bonds is more than 70 kJ/mol. Thus, the maleic acid monoanion plays a key role in the processes of association in aqueous solution, and the interaction of the maleic acid monoanion with API is more preferable than the interaction of API molecules with each other. DFT computations in the discrete continuum approximation reveal the spectral features of heterodimers and trimers, and the ATR-IR spectra confirmed these findings. MD simulations followed by DFT calculations made it possible to describe the initial stages of the formation of pharmaceutical cocrystals in an aqueous solution.

Abstract
Synthesis of multicomponent solid forms is an important method of modifying and fine-tuning the most critical physicochemical properties of drug compounds. The design of new multicomponent pharmaceutical materials requires reliable information about the supramolecular arrangement of molecules and detailed description of the intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure. It implies the use of a combination of different experimental and theoretical investigation methods. Organic salts present new challenges for those who develop theoretical approaches describing the structure, spectral properties, and lattice energy Elatt. These crystals consist of closed-shell organic ions interacting through relatively strong hydrogen bonds, which leads to Elatt > 200 kJ/mol. Some technical problems that a user of periodic (solid-state) density functional theory (DFT) programs encounters when calculating the properties of these crystals still remain unsolved, for example, the influence of cell parameter optimization on the Elatt value, wave numbers, relative intensity of Raman-active vibrations in the low-frequency region, etc. In this work, various properties of a new two-component carbendazim maleate crystal were experimentally investigated, and the applicability of different DFT functionals and empirical Grimme corrections to the description of the obtained structural and spectroscopic properties was tested. Based on this, practical recommendations were developed for further theoretical studies of multicomponent organic pharmaceutical crystals.

Abstract
The structure and harmonic and anharmonic IR spectra of the protonated water dimer (PWD) were calculated in C1, C2, and Cs symmetry at the MP4/acc-pVTZ level of theory. We found that structure and IR spectra are practically identical in C2 and C1 symmetry, demonstrating that an equilibrium C1 configuration of the PWD is not realized. Anharmonic coupling of the shared proton stretching vibration with all other modes in the PWD in C2 and Cs symmetry was the focus of this investigation. For this purpose, 28 two-dimensional potential energy surfaces (2D PES) were built at the MP4/acc-pVTZ level of theory and the corresponding vibrational Schrödinger equations were solved using the DVR method. Differences in the coupling of the investigated mode with other modes in the C2 and Cs configurations, along with some factors that determine the red- or blue-shift of the stretching vibration frequency, were analyzed. We obtained a rather reasonable value of the stretching frequency of the bridging proton (1058.4 cm-1) unperturbed by Fermi resonance. The Fermi resonance between the fundamental vibration ν7 and the combined vibration ν2 + ν6 of the same symmetry was analyzed through anharmonic second-order perturbation theory calculations, as well as by 3D PES constructed using Q2, Q6, and Q7 as normal coordinates. A significant (up to 50%) transfer of intensity from the fundamental vibration to the combined one was found. We have estimated the frequency of the bridging proton stretching vibration in the Cs configuration of the PWD based on calculations of the intrinsic anharmonicity and anharmonic double modes interactions at the MP4/acc-pVTZ level of theory (1261 cm-1).

Abstract
We report IR spectra of H5O2(+) and H5O2(+)·Ar and their deuterium isotopologues using ab initio molecular dynamics. The trajectories were propagated as microcanonical (NVE) ensembles at energies corresponding to temperatures 50 and 100 K. The potential energy surface is calculated on-the-fly at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The calculations show that adding an argon atom to H5O2(+) introduces symmetry breaking in the Zundel core ion, causes blueshift in the shared proton vibration by about 200 cm(-1), and leads to the splitting of the OH stretch vibrations into four bands. Driven molecular dynamics (DMD) method is used to assign the spectrum by coupling the dipole moment to an external electric field oscillating at frequency ω. The broad feature at 1100 cm(-1) in the H5O2(+)·Ar spectrum is ascribed to the large amplitude shared proton vibration coupled with torsion and wag modes. MD MP2 simulations predict the H/D redshift in the shared proton vibration and water bending vibration to be about 280 and 460 cm(-1), respectively, in good agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract
Nitranilic acid (2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-dinitro-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione) as a strong dibasic acid in acidic aqueous media creates the Zundel cation, H5O2(+). The structural unit in a crystal comprises (H5O2)2(+) (2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-dinitro-1,4-benzoquinonate)(2-) dihydrate where the Zundel cation reveals no symmetry, being an ideal case for studying proton dynamics and its stability. The Zundel cation and proton transfer dynamics are studied by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and various quantum chemical methods, including periodic DFT calculations, ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, and quantization of nuclear motion along three fully coupled internal coordinates. The Zundel cation features a short H-bond with the O···O distance of 2.433(2) Å with an asymmetric placement of hydrogen. The proton potential is of a single well type and, due to the non-symmetric surroundings, of asymmetric shape. The formation of the Zundel cation is facilitated by the electronegative NO2 groups. The employed spectroscopic techniques supported by calculations confirm the presence of a short H-bond with a complex proton dynamics.

Abstract
Abstract
The structure, harmonic frequencies and infrared (IR) intensities of the fundamental transitions in potassium hydrogen maleate (KHM) crystal have been computed using the BLYP/6-31G** method with periodic boundary conditions. The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensities of the fundamental transitions were evaluated and compared with the experimental INS spectra of hydrogenated sample and isotopic analogues of the KHM crystal; the agreement is reasonable good. Spectroscopic manifestations of the proton dynamics in the strong intramolecular H-bond were clarified by comparison of the computed frequencies of the IR and INS-active fundamental transitions. Due to several reasons, the number of the bands and their relative intensity were found to differ between the INS and IR spectra of the KHM crystal. Reduced masses for the asymmetric O…H…O stretching vibrations of the hydrogen maleate ion appear to be larger 1 a.m.u. because of the strong coupling between the bridging proton motion and the various intramolecular vibrations.

Abstract
Accurate anharmonic experimental vibrational frequencies for water clusters consisting of 2-5 water molecules have been predicted on the basis of comparing different methods with MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculated and experimental anharmonic frequencies. The combination of using HF/6-31G* scaled frequencies for intramolecular modes and anharmonic frequencies for intermolecular modes gives excellent agreement with experiment for the water dimer and trimer and are as good as the expensive anharmonic MP2 calculations. The water trimer, the cyclic Ci and S4 tetramers, and the cyclic pentamer all have unique peaks in the infrared spectrum between 500 and 800 cm-1 and between 3400 and 3700 cm-1. Under the right experimental conditions these different clusters can be uniquely identified using high-resolution IR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra for the chloride ion solvated by either water, methanol or ethanol have been recorded using an FTICR spectrometer coupled to a free-electron laser, and are presented here along with assignments to the observed bands. The assignments made to the Cl(-)/H(2)O, Cl(-)(CH(3)OH), and Cl(-)(CH(3)CH(2)OH) spectra are based on comparison with the neutral H(2)O, CH(3)OH, and CH(3)CH(2)OH spectra, respectively. This work confirms that a band observed around 1400 cm(-1) in the Cl(-)(H(2)O) spectrum is not due to the Ar tag in Ar predissociation spectra. The carrier of this band is, most likely, the first overtone of the OHCl bend. Based on the position of the overtone in the IRMPD spectrum, 1375 cm(-1), the fundamental must occur very close to 700 cm(-1) and observation of this band should aid theoretical treatments of the spectrum of this complex. B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,2pd) calculations are shown to reproduce the IRMPD spectra of all three solvated chloride species. They also predict that attaching one or two Ar atoms to the Cl(-)(H(2)O) complex results in a shift of no more than a few wavenumbers in the fundamental bands for the bare complex, in agreement with previous experiment. For both alcohol-Cl(-) complexes, the S(N)2 "backside attack" isomers are not observed and Cl(-) is predicted theoretically, and confirmed experimentally, to be bound to the hydroxyl hydrogen. For Cl(-)(CH(3)CH(2)OH), the trans and gauche conformers are similar in energy, with the gauche conformer predicted to be thermodynamically favoured. The experimental infrared spectrum agrees well with that predicted for the gauche conformer but a mixture of gauche and anti conformers cannot be ruled out based on the experimental spectra nor on the computed thermochemistry.

Abstract
Standard molecular and driven molecular dynamics are used to analyze prominent spectral features in the H5O2+ infrared spectrum. In the driven method, the molecular Hamiltonian is augmented with a time-dependent term, mu x epsilon(0) sin(omegat), where mu is the dipole moment of H5O2+, epsilon0 is the electric field, and omega is the frequency. The magnitude of the electric field determines whether the driving is mild (the harmonic limit) or strong (anharmonic motion and mode coupling). We analyze the spectrum in the wavenumber range from 600 to 1900 cm(-1), where recent experimental measurements are available for H5O2+. On the basis of the simulations, we have assigned the broad feature around 1000 cm(-1) to the proton transfer coupled with the torsion motion. Intense absorption near 1780 cm(-1) is assigned to the H2O monomer bend coupled with proton transfer.

Abstract
Full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface (PES) and dipole moment surface (DMS) are reported for H(5)O(2) (+). Tens of thousands of coupled-cluster [CCSD(T)] and second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) calculations of electronic energies, using aug-cc-pVTZ basis, were done. The energies were fit very precisely in terms of all the internuclear distances, using standard least-square procedures, however, with a fitting basis that satisfies permutational symmetry with respect to like atoms. The H(5)O(2) (+) PES is a fit to 48 189 CCSD(T) energies, containing 7962 polynomial coefficients. The PES has a rms fitting error of 34.9 cm(-1) for the entire data set up to 110 000 cm(-1). This surface can describe various internal floppy motions, including the H atom exchanges, monomer inversions, and monomer torsions. First- and higher-order saddle points have been located on the surface and compared with available previous theoretical work. In addition, the PES dissociates correctly (and symmetrically) to H(2)O+H(3)O(+), with D(e)=11 923.8 cm(-1). Geometrical and vibrational properties of the monomer fragments are presented. The corresponding global DMS fit (MP2 based) involves 3844 polynomial coefficients and also dissociates correctly.
