Abstract
A cryptand derivative, H6L, which has three H2saloph arms connected by two benzene ring bridgeheads, was synthesized and converted into the trinuclear metallocryptand, LNi3. The nonmetalated host, H6L, was found to bind to alkali metal ions (Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+; logKa = 3.37-6.67) in its well-defined cavity in DMSO/chloroform (1:9). The binding affinity was enhanced by 1-2 orders of magnitude upon the conversion into the metallocryptand, LNi3, which can be explained by the more polarized phenoxo groups in the [Ni(saloph)] arms. The guest binding affinity of Na+ < K+ < Rb+ ≈ Cs+ was clearly demonstrated by the 1H NMR competition experiments. The DFT calculations suggested that the Rb+ ion most suitably fit into the benzene-benzene spacing with a cation-π interaction and that only the largest Cs+ ion can almost equally interact with all six phenoxo oxygen donor atoms. The metallocryptand, LNi3, also showed a strong binding affinity to Ag+ by taking advantage of cation-π interactions, which was confirmed by spectroscopic titrations and crystallographic analysis as well as DFT calculations. Thus, the well-defined three-dimensional cavity of LNi3 was found to be suitable for strong binding with alkali metal ions as well as Ag+.

Abstract
This is the first report of a single-step synthesis of primary benzyl alcohol containing different cross-azo compounds (14 examples) by Cu(II) in the presence of a newly synthesized amino-ether heteroditopic macrobicycle cage. Interestingly, even with extreme conditions, the benzyl alcohol remains unoxidized by the Cu(II) catalyst due to the protective etherial pocket of the cage.

Abstract
The synthesis of a rigid macrobicyclic N,S lactam L1 and a topologically favored in/in N,S cryptand L2 are reported with X-ray structure analysis, dynamic correlation NMR spectroscopy, and computational analysis. Lactam L1 exhibits two distinct rotameric conformations (plus their enantiomeric counterparts) at 25 °C, as confirmed via NMR spectroscopy and computational analysis. Coalescence of the resonances of L1 was observed at 115 °C, allowing for complete nuclei to frequency correlation. Combining computational investigations with experimental data, topological equilibria and relative energies/strain relating to the perturbation of the pore were determined. Due to the increased conformational strain of the N2S2 template, the nitrogen lone pairs in L2 elicit a unique transannular interaction, resulting in a thermodynamically favored in/in nephroidal racemate. The combination of preferred topology, steric relief, and electronic localization of L2 induces a chiral environment imparted through the amine with a computed inversion barrier of 10.3 kcal mol-1.

Abstract
Synthetic helicases can be designed on the basis of ligands that bind more strongly to single-stranded nucleic acids than to double-stranded nucleic acids. This can be achieved with ligands containing phenyl groups, which intercalate into single strands, but due to their small size not into double strands. Moreover, two phenyl rings are combined with a distance that allows bis-intercalation with only single strands and not double strands. In this respect, such ligands also mimic single-strand binding (SSB) proteins. Exploration with more than 23 ligands, mostly newly synthesised, shows that the distance between the phenyl rings and between those and the linker influence the DNA unwinding efficiency, which can reach a melting point decrease of almost ΔTm =50 °C at much lower concentrations than that with any other known artificial helicases. Conformational pre-organisation of the ligand plays a decisive role in optimal efficiency. Substituents at the phenyl rings have a large effect, and increase, for example, in the order of H<F<Cl<Br, which illustrates the strong role of dispersive interactions in intercalation. Studies with homopolymers revealed significant selectivity: for example, with a ligand concentration of 40 μM at 35 °C, only GC double strands melt (ΔTm =48 °C), whereas the AT strand remains untouched, and with poly(rA)-poly(rU) as an RNA model one observes unfolding at 29 °C with a concentration of only 30 μM.

Abstract
New cryptands including bis-azacrown and saccharidic moieties in their structure were prepared in several steps by applying Staudinger-aza-Wittig reaction (SAW). Syntheses have been started from cheap, easily available commercial compounds such as D-glucose, D-cellobiose and D-lactose subsequently transformed into their derivatives in fairly good yields (60-65%) and suitable to give desired final cryptands by direct SAW coupling reactions.

Abstract
During the last few years, the construction of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages has attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications in fluorescence detection of metal ions, anions, or small molecules, mimicking complicated natural photo-processes, and preparing photoelectric devices, etc. This perspective focuses on the recent advances in the construction of a variety of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages via coordination-driven self-assembly. In addition, the fluorescence properties and the applications of these organometallic architectures have also been discussed.

Abstract
Abstract Spin–lattice relaxation times, T1s, for 13C nuclei in two cations Hn1n+ (n = 1, 5) of N-(2-aminoethyl)-cyclam (1, scorpiand) were determined by means of 13C{1H} NMR experiments in aqueous solution at pH 11.5 and 0.2. The theoretical study [modeling with OPLS-AA, B3LYP/6-31G(d) geometry optimizations, dispersion-corrected energies (DFT-D3), and DFT-GIAO predictions of the NMR chemical shifts (including an IEF-PCM simulation of hydration)] was also done for several conformers of the tautomer iso-H414+ not investigated before. The binding directions in protonated polyamino receptors necessary for efficient complexation of the nitrate anion(s) were briefly outlined, as well. All these results were discussed in terms of ‘abnormal’ 13C chemical shift changes found previously for the side-chain carbons of amine 1 in strongly acidic solution (HNO3). In conclusion, an earlier proposal of its association with NO3− at pH <1 was rejected. Instead, the participation of small amounts of a micro-species iso-H414+Dhydr under such conditions can be proposed. Graphical Abstract A small contribution of iso-H414+Dhydr (see figure) to an ionic mixture of pentamine 1 was proposed to explain the ‘abnormal’ 13C NMR shifts observed for atoms C11 and C12 in its side-chain arm, at pH <1.![]() Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s10847-013-0298-x) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Abstract
The template condensation reaction between benzil and 3,4-diaminotoulene resulted mononuclear 12-membered tetraimine macrocyclic complexes of the type, [MLCl(2)] [M=Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)]. The synthesized complexes have been characterized on the basis of the results of elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic studies viz. FT-IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, FAB mass, UV-vis and EPR. An octahedral geometry has been envisaged for all these complexes, while a distorted octahedral geometry has been noticed for Cu(II) complex. Low conductivity data of all these complexes suggest their non-ionic nature. The interactive studies of these complexes with calf thymus DNA showed that the complexes are avid binders of calf thymus DNA. The in vitro antibacterial studies of these complexes screened against pathogenic bacteria proved them as growth inhibiting agents.

Abstract
[Chemical reaction: See text] Conjugated, shape-persistent macrocycles based on [3 + 3] Schiff-base condensation are of interest for supramolecular materials. In an effort to develop new discotic liquid crystals based on these compounds, a series of macrocycles with peripheral alkoxy groups of varying length have been prepared. The synthesis and mechanism of formation have been probed by isolation of oligomeric intermediates. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of one macrocycle revealed a nonplanar, strongly hydrogen-bonded structure. To our surprise, even with very long substituents, the macrocycles were not liquid crystalline. This has been rationalized by ab initio calculations that indicate the macrocycles are undergoing rotation of the dihydroxydiiminobenzene rings that may not allow a stable discotic liquid crystalline phase. These results provide new insight into the formation and properties of these large macrocycles and may provide guidance to developing stable liquid crystalline materials in the future.
