Synthesis, structure, solution behavior, reactivity and biological evaluation of oxidovanadium(iv/v) thiosemicarbazone complexes. Dalton Trans 2018; 47:11358-11374. Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of an oxidovanadium(iv) [VIVO(L)(acac)] (1) and of two dioxidovanadium(v) [VVO2(L')] (2) and [VVO2(L)] (2a) complexes of the Schiff base formed from the reaction of 4-(p-fluorophenyl) thiosemicarbazone with pyridine-2-aldehyde (HL) are described. The oxidovanadium(iv) species [VIVO(L)(acac)] (1) was synthesized by the reaction of VIVO(acac)2 with the thiosemicarbazone HL in refluxing ethanol. The recrystallization of [VIVO(L)(acac)] (1) in DMF, CH3CN or EtOH gave the same product i.e. the dioxidovanadium(v) complex [VVO2(L)] (2a); however, upon recrystallization of 1 in DMSO a distinct compound [VVO2(L')] (2) was formed, wherein the original ligand L- is transformed to a rearranged one, L'-. In the presence of DMSO the ligand in complex 1 is found to undergo methylation at the carbon centre attached to imine nitrogen (aldimine) and transformed to the corresponding VVO2-species through in situ reaction. The synthesized HL and the metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR and EPR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [VVO2(L')] (2) was determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The methylation of various other ligands and complexes prepared from different vanadium precursors under similar reaction conditions was also attempted and it was confirmed that the imine methylation observed is both ligand and metal precursor specific. Complexes 1 and 2 show in vitro insulin-like activity against insulin responsive L6 myoblast cells, higher than VIVO(acac)2, with complex 1 being more potent. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity studies of HL, and of complexes 1 and 2 against the MCF-7 and Vero cell lines were also done. The ligand is not cytotoxic and complex 2 is significantly more cytotoxic than 1. DAPI staining experiments indicate that an increase in the time of incubation and an increase of concentration of the complexes lead to the increase in cell death.

Abstract
Abstract
Silver(I) complexes of thioureas and thiocyanate, [(Tu)AgSCN], [(Metu)AgSCN], [(Dmtu)AgSCN], [(Tmtu)(AgSCN)1.5], [(Imt)AgSCN], and [(Diaz)AgSCN] (where Tu = thiourea, Metu = N-methylthiourea, Dmtu = N,N′-dimethylthiourea, Tmtu = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylthiourea, Imt = 1,3-imidazolidine-2-thione, and Diaz = 1,3-diazinane-2-thione), have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The crystal structure of one of them, [(Diaz)Ag(SCN)] (1), was determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of 1 shows that the complex exists in the form of a chain-like polymer comprising [Ag(μ
2-Diaz)(μ
2-SCN)] units. The silver atoms are bridged by μ
2-thione sulfur atoms of Diaz and μ
2-thiocyanate sulfur atoms. Thereby each silver atom adopts a distorted tetrahedral coordination environment comprising four sulfur atoms, two from thione and two from thiocyanate ligands. An upfield shift in the >C=S resonance of thiones in 13C NMR and a downfield shift in the N–H resonance in 1H NMR are consistent with the sulfur coordination to silver(I). The appearance of a band around 2100 cm–1 in the IR and a resonance around 125 ppm in the 13C NMR spectrum indicates the binding of thiocyanate to silver(I).

Abstract
The synthesis of nickel(II), palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes with thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone of p-tolualdehyde are reported. All the new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements, mass, 1H-NMR, IR and electronic spectral studies. Based on the molar conductance measurements in DMSO, the complexes may be formulated as [Ni(L)2Cl2] and [M(L)2]Cl2 (where M = Pd(II) and Pt(II)) due to their non-electrolytic and 1:2 electrolytic nature, respectively. The spectral data are consistent with an octahedral geometry around Ni(II) and a square planar geometry for Pd(II) and Pt(II), in which the ligands act as bidentate chelating agents, coordinated through the nitrogen and sulphur/oxygen atoms. The ligands and their metal complexes were screened in vitro against fungal species Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium odum, using the food poison technique. .

Abstract
Reactions of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde with 3- and 4-methoxy-substituted salicylaldehyde S-methyl-thiosemicarbazones in the presence of FeCl(3) and NiCl(2) resulted in the corresponding methoxy-substituted N(1),N(4)-diarylidene-S-methyl-thiosemicarbazone chelates. Characterisation of the compounds in the [Fe(L)Cl] and [Ni(L)] general formula was accomplished by means of elemental analysis, conductivity and magnetic measurements, (1)H NMR, UV-vis, IR and mass spectroscopy. Cytotoxicity and proliferation experiments using K562 chronic myeloid leukemia cell line and ECV 304 human endothelial cell line imply that the iron(III) chelates may have anti-leukemic effects with 3.5 microg/dl LD(50) dose.

Abstract
Reactions of copper(I) halides with a series of thiosemicarbazone ligands (Htsc) in the presence of triphenylphosphine (Ph(3)P) in acetonitrile have yielded three types of complexes: (i) monomers, [CuX(eta1-S-Htsc)(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = I (1), Br (2), benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hbtsc); I (5), Br (6), Cl (7), pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hpytsc)], (ii) halogen-bridged dimers, [Cu2(mu2-X)2(eta1-S-Htsc)2(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = Br (3), Hbtsc; I (8), furan-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hftsc); I (11), thiophene-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Httsc)], and (iii) sulfur-bridged dimers, [Cu2X2(mu2-S-Htsc)2(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = Cl (4), Hbtsc; Br (9), Cl (10), pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hptsc); Br (12), Httsc]. All of these complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C, or 31P NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography (1-12). In all of the complexes, thiosemicarbazones are acting as neutral S-donor ligands in eta()S or mu2-S bonding modes. The Cu...Cu separations in the Cu(mu2-X)2Cu and Cu(mu2-S)2Cu cores lie in the ranges 2.981(1)-3.2247(6) and 2.813(1)-3.2329(8) Angstroms, respectively. The geometry around each Cu center in monomers and dimers may be treated as distorted tetrahedral. Ab initio density functional theory calculations on model monomeric and dimeric complexes of the simplest thiosemicarbazone [H2C=N-NH-C(S)-NH2, Htsc] have revealed that monomers and halogen-bridged dimers have similar stability and that sulfur-bridged dimers are stable only when halogen atoms are engaged in hydrogen bonding with the solvent of crystallization or H2O molecules.

Abstract
Mono- (3a,b) and binuclear (4a,b) tetradentate NiII complexes of a series of 26-membered macrocyclic salen dimers, [salen(CH2)]2, are prepared in good yield by solvent-controlled reaction with Ni(OAc)2. The mononuclear complex 3b crystallizes in the trigonal space group 3P1(#144), a = 18.2566(2) A, c = 15.9244(2) A, V = 4596.57(8) A3, and Z = 3. Refinement converged with R = 0.054 and Rw = 0.049 for 6852 reflections with I > 2.003 sigma(I). The NiII in complex 3b coordinates in an approximate square planar geometry to one of the two available tetradentate salen sites. Complex 4b crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1)(#19), a = 19.531(2) A, b = 22.891(3), c = 13.373(1) A, V = 5960(1) A3, and Z = 4. The refinement converged with R = 0.067 and Rw = 0.065 for 3752 reflections with I > 2.003 sigma(I). Complex 4b coordinates two distorted square planar, cofacially oriented NiII-salen units held 7.1 A apart by a rigid, syn-folded macrocyclic structure. The solution spectroscopic data and solid-state crystallographic data of 3b and 4b demonstrate the presence of a molecular-sized cavity which shows host-guest properties. Reaction of the flexible 32-membered disalen macrocycle [salen(OCH2CH2O)]2 with Ni(OAc)2 resulted in formation of a binuclear complex, 5. Complex 5 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1(#1), a = 10.366(4) A, b = 12.170(3) A, c = 10.021(2) A, alpha = 106.29(2) degrees, beta = 91.69(2) degrees, gamma = 68.63(2) degrees, V = 1126.3(5) A3, and Z = 1. The refinement converged with R = 0.052 and Rw = 0.053 for 2385 reflections with I > 2.003 sigma(I). The binuclear complex 5 contains two cofacially oriented, square planar NiII-salen groups lying 3.5 A apart in an anti-folded macrocyclic structure.
