Abstract
Effectively detecting catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) simultaneously is crucial for environmental protection and human health monitoring. In the study presented herein, a novel electrochemical sensor for the sensitive simultaneous detection of CC and HQ was constructed based on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)-modified multi-walled carbon nanotube paste electrode (MWCNTPE). Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques were utilized to characterize the sensing interface and investigate the sensing mechanism. Under the optimal detection conditions, the oxidation peak currents of CC and HQ show a good linear relationship with their concentrations in the range of 0.4-400 μM with a detection limit of 0.083 μM for CC and 0.028 μM for HQ (S/N = 3). Moreover, the sensor exhibits good performance and can be applied successfully in the simultaneous detection of CC and HQ in tap water samples and urine samples with satisfactory results, indicating its promising application prospects.

Abstract
A sensing platform based on nanocomposite materials composed of gold metal nanoparticles (AuNPs) and conducting polymer (CP) matrix has been developed for serotonin and epinephrine detection. The CP-AuNPs nanocomposite materials have been synthesized onto glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) by using novel electrochemical procedures based on sinusoidal currents (SC). The SC procedures ensured good control of the metal nanoparticles distribution, increased electrochemical surface area, and enhanced analytical performance. The proposed sensing platform displayed good analytical performance toward serotonin and epinephrine detection. A wide linear analytical response toward epinephrine in the range from 10 to 640 μM and a low detection limit of 1.4 μM epinephrine has been obtained. The sensing platform has also displayed a linear response toward serotonin in the range from 10 to 320 μM, with a detection limit of 5.7 μM serotonin. The sensing platform has been successfully applied in the analysis of epinephrine and serotonin in real samples of tap water and urine with good accuracy.

Abstract
The commercially available polyelectrolyte complex poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is ubiquitous in organic and hybrid electronics. As such, it has often been used as a benchmark material for fundamental studies and the development of new electronic devices. Yet, most studies on PEDOT:PSS have focused on its electronic conductivity in dry environments, with less consideration given to its ion transport, coupled ionic-electronic transport, and charge storage properties in aqueous environments. These properties are essential for applications in bioelectronics (sensors, actuators), charge storage devices, and electrochromic displays. Importantly, past studies on mixed ionic-electronic transport in PEDOT:PSS neglected to consider how the molecular structure of PSS affects mixed ionic-electronic transport. Herein, we therefore investigated the effect of the molecular weight and size distribution of PSS on the electronic properties and morphology of PEDOT:PSS both in dry and aqueous environments, and overall performance in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with two different chain transfer agents, six PSS samples with monomodal, narrow (Đ = 1.1) and broad (Đ = 1.7) size distributions and varying molecular weights were synthesized and used as matrices for PEDOT. We found that using higher molecular weight of PSS (M n = 145 kg mol-1) and broad dispersity led to OECTs with the highest transconductance (up to 16 mS) and [μC * ] values (~140 F·cm-1V-1s-1) in PEDOT:PSS, despite having a lower volumetric capacitance (C * = 35 ± 4 F cm-3). The differences were best explained by studying the microstructure of the films by atomic force microscopy (AFM). We found that heterogeneities in the PEDOT:PSS films (interconnected and large PEDOT- and PSS-rich domains) obtained from high molecular weight and high dispersity PSS led to higher charge mobility (μ OECT ~ 4 cm2V-1s-1) and hence transconductance. These studies highlight the importance of considering molecular weight and size distribution in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductor, and could pave the way to designing high performance organic electronics for biological interfaces.

Abstract
Preservatives in eye drops have always been the focus of people's attention. Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is one of the most frequently used bacteriostatic agents in eye drops, which has broad-spectrum and efficient bactericidal ability. However, the inappropriate dosage of BAC may lead to high cytotoxicity. Therefore, adding low-toxic hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) can not only achieve antimicrobial effect, but also have the advantages of moisturizing and biocompatibility. In this paper, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of HACC and BAC were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Diphtheroid bacillus and Candida albicans. Based on the MIC of each antimicrobial agent, an antimicrobial assay was performed to investigate the antimicrobial ability of disinfectant solution. Besides, cytotoxicity had also been assessed. When the HACC/BAC solution at weight ratio of 150/1 showed a highest antimicrobial efficiency and the cell proliferation rates were the highest in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays. Furthermore, the cell leakage was examined by UV absorption, indicating the great synergistic antimicrobial effect between HACC and BAC. What is more, the results of micromorphology research suggested that as the result of repulsive force between the two molecules, the average particle size of HACC would decrease. Finally, the impedance experiment showed that with the addition of BAC, current density would increase significantly, suggesting that more positive charge group was exposed to aqueous solution, leading the the increase of antimicrobial ability. Based on these results, HACC-BAC combination solution might be a promising novel antimicrobial group for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Conducting polymers that possess good electrochemical properties, nanostructured morphology and functionality for bioconjugation are essential to realise the concept of all-polymer-based biosensors that do not depend on traditional nanocatalysts such as carbon materials, metal, metal oxides or dyes. In this research, we demonstrated a facile approach for the simultaneous preparation of a bi-functional PEDOT interface with a tunable 3D nanofibrous network and carboxylic acid groups (i.e. Nano-PEDOT-COOH) via controlled co-polymerisation of EDOT and EDOT-COOH monomers, using tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as a soft-template. By tuning the ratio between EDOT and EDOT-COOH monomer, the nanofibrous structure and carboxylic acid functionalisation of Nano-PEDOT-COOH were varied over a fibre diameter range of 15.6 ± 3.7 to 70.0 ± 9.5 nm and a carboxylic acid group density from 0.03 to 0.18 μmol cm-2. The nanofibres assembled into a three-dimensional network with a high specific surface area, which contributed to low charge transfer resistance and high transduction activity towards the co-enzyme NADH, delivering a wide linear range of 20-960 μM and a high sensitivity of 0.224 μA μM-1 cm-2 at the Nano-PEDOT-COOH50% interface. Furthermore, the carboxylic acid groups provide an anchoring site for the stable immobilisation of an NADH-dependent dehydrogenase (i.e. lactate dehydrogenase), via EDC/S-NHS chemistry, for the fabrication of a Bio-Nano-PEDOT-based biosensor for lactate detection which had a response time of less than 10 s over the range of 0.05-1.8 mM. Our developed bio-Nano-PEDOT interface shows future potential for coupling with multi-biorecognition molecules via carboxylic acid groups for the development of a range of advanced all-polymer biosensors.

Abstract
Conferring antifouling properties can extend the use of conducting polymers in biosensors and bioelectronics under complex biological conditions. On the basis of the antifouling properties of a series of zwitterionic polymers, we synthesized new thiophene-based compounds bearing a phosphorylcholine, carboxybetaine, or sulfobetaine pendant group. The monomers were synthesized by a facile reaction of thiol-functionalized 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with zwitterionic methacrylates. Electrochemical copolymerization was performed to deposit zwitterionic poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films with tunable conducting and antifouling properties on a conducting substrate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the conductivity and capacitance decreased with increasing zwitterionic content in the films. Protein adsorption and cell adhesion studies showed the effects of the type and content of zwitterions on the antifouling characteristics. Optimization of the electrodeposition conditions enabled development of both conducting and antifouling polymer films. These antifouling conjugated functional polymers have promising applications in biological environments.

Abstract
Conducting polymers are good candidates for biosensor applications when molecular recognition element is imparted. We developed trisaccharide-grafted conducting polymers for label-free detection of the human influenza A virus (H1N1) with high sensitivity and specificity. A 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) derivative bearing an oxylamine moiety was electrochemically copolymerized with EDOT. The obtained film was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, stylus surface profilometer, and AC-impedance spectroscopy. The trisaccharides comprising Sia-α2,6'-Gal-Glu (2,6-sialyllactose) or Sia-α2,3'-Gal-Glu (2,3-sialyllactose) were covalently introduced to the side chain of the conducting polymers as a ligand for viral recognition. Immobilization of sialyllactose was confirmed by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and water contact angle measurements. Specific interaction of 2,6-sialyllactose with hemagglutinin in the envelope of the human influenza A virus (H1N1) was detected by QCM and potentiometry with enhanced sensitivity by 2 orders of magnitude when compared with that of commercially available kits. The developed conducting polymers possessing specific virus recognition are a good candidate material for wearable monitoring and point-of-care testing because of their processability and mass productivity in combination with printing technologies.

The development of nanostructured conducting polymers based materials for electrochemical applications has attracted intense attention due to their environmental stability, unique reversible redox properties, abundant electron active sites, rapid electron transfer and tunable conductivity. Here, a phytic acid doped polyaniline nanofibers based nanocomposite was synthesized using a simple and green method, the properties of the resulting nanomaterial was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A glassy carbon electrode modified by the nanocomposite was evaluated as a new platform for the simultaneous detection of trace amounts of Cd2+ and Pb2+ using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The synergistic contribution from PANI nanofibers and phytic acid enhances the accumulation efficiency and the charge transfer rate of metal ions during the DPASV analysis. Under the optimal conditions, good linear relationships were obtained for Cd2+ in a range of 0.05-60 μg L-1, with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.02 μg L-1, and for Pb2+ in a range of 0.1-60 μg L-1, with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.05 μg L-1. The new electrode was successfully applied to real water samples for simultaneous detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+ with good recovery rates. Therefore, the new electrode material may be a capable candidate for the detection of trace levels of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
A composite made of polyacrylic acid and hollow TiO2 spheres (TiO2@PPAA) was prepared by the plasma polymerization method and subsequently used as an electrode material for detecting lysozyme. The chemical structure, surface morphology, and electrochemical performance of the TiO2@PPAA composite were mainly affected by the plasma input power used during plasma polymerization. After optimizing plasma conditions, aptamer strands exhibited high adsorption affinity toward the surface of TiO2@PPAA composite via synergistic effects between TiO2 and PPAA. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that the developed TiO2@PPAA aptasensor presents highly sensitive detection ability toward lysozyme; the limit of detection of the proposed aptasensor is 0.015 ng mL(-1) (1.04 pM) within the range of 0.05-100 ng mL(-1) in terms of 3σ value. The film further showed excellent selectivity toward lysozyme in the presence of interfering proteins, such as thrombin, bovine serum albumin, and immunoglobulin E. Thus, this aptasensing strategy might broaden the applications of plasma polymerized nanomaterials in the field of biomedical research and early clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
Polyelectrolyte multilayers built via the layer-by-layer (LbL) method has been one of the most promising systems in the field of materials science. Layered structures can be constructed by the adsorption of various polyelectrolyte species onto the surface of a solid or liquid material by means of electrostatic interaction. The thickness of the adsorbed layers can be tuned precisely in the nanometer range. Stable, semiconducting thin films are interesting research subjects. We use a conducting polymer, poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), in the preparation of a stable thin film via the LbL method. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been used to characterize the ionic conductivity of the PPV multilayer films. The ionic conductivity of the films has been found to be dependent on the polymerization temperature. The film conductivity can be fitted to a modified Randle’s circuit. The circuit equivalent calculations are performed to provide the diffusion coefficient values.

Abstract
We have systematically studied the self-organization of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), an electrochromic material, upon control of the solvent evaporation rate. We characterized these polymer films using atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Well-ordered P3HT structures were developed after solvent annealing; these highly crystalline structures exhibited enhanced electrochromic contrast and reduced resistance within the film, leading to larger coloration efficiencies and faster switching times. The optical contrast (Delta%T), coloration efficiency, and switching time of the P3HT films increased from 54.2%, 182.6 cm(2) C(-1), and 5.3 s, respectively, prior to solvent annealing to 64.8%, 293.5 cm(2) C(-1), and 3.2 s, respectively, after application of the solvent-annealing conditions.
