Abstract
The oscillatory electro-oxidation of 2-propanol on platinum and platinum-based catalysts has attracted growing attention in recent years due to its importance in the interconversion between chemical and electrical energies. This reaction might proceed with a very high selectivity to acetone, nearly without the formation of carbon dioxide, and the reversibility of the 2-propanol/acetone pair is very appropriate for hydrogen transfer. An important aspect of this system is the ubiquitous emergence of potential oscillations under current control, and it has been pointed out as a problem to be avoided and a primary cause of limitations to the use of 2-propanol in practical devices. Herein, we present an experimental study of the electrochemical instabilities in the electro-oxidation of 2-propanol on platinum. The system was studied using polycrystalline platinum, in acidic media and at different temperatures. Besides the extensive characterization of the potential oscillations, we have also discussed possible venues for engineering the dynamics to benefit from the potential oscillations. In this sense, we have also characterized the instabilities in the system containing a mixture of 2-propanol and methanol. The efficiency of a hypothetical fuel cell operated under different conditions is also presented.

Abstract
Despite several papers describing the oscillatory methanol electrooxidation reaction (OMOR) catalyzed by polycrystalline Pt, these dynamic instabilities are less explored on single crystalline surfaces. Herein, we observed and mapped for the first time the OMOR on Pt(111) in non-adsorbing anion solutions as well as in the presence of small amounts of sulfate anions. Period 1 oscillations with oscillation frequencies from 1.2 to 2.0 Hz were observed for methanol concentrations higher than 1.0 M, with no evolution to more complex patterns. These oscillations occur in the potential range in which PtOH is partially covering the surface without irreversible oxidation processes. Small changes in both the mean potential (Em) and the poisoning rate along the time-series were observed, the so-called drift, and were explained in terms of the accumulation of intermediates at the interface. The presence of sulfate strongly inhibits the OMOR, and the results are discussed in terms of sulfate adlayer formation on {111} domains.

Abstract
The design and fabrication of economically viable anode catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) have been challenging issues in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) over the decades. In this work, a composite electrochemical catalyst of Pd-coupled Ag and ZnO for the possible replacement of expensive Pt catalysts in DMFCs is successfully prepared. The as-made Pd@Ag/ZnO exhibits specific activity, which is 1.8-fold, 2.8-fold, and 4.6-fold higher than that of a Pd/ZnO catalyst, 20% Pd/C catalyst and Pd black, respectively. The improvement of the catalytic mechanism is likely due to the synergistic interaction between Pd@Ag and ZnO. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results confirm that Ag doped into Pd weakens the adsorption of CO, dramatically improving the capability to resist CO poisoning.

Abstract
In the course of (electro)catalytic reactions, reversible and irreversible changes, namely the formation of adsorbed poisons, catalyst degradation, surface roughening, etc., take place at distinct time-scales. Reading the transformations on the catalyst surface from the measurement of the reaction rates is greatly desirable but generally not feasible. Herein, we study the effect of random surface defects on Pt(100) electrodes toward the electro-oxidation of methanol in acidic media. The surface defects are gently generated in situ and their relative magnitudes are reproducibly controlled. The system was characterized under conventional conditions and investigated under an oscillatory regime. Oscillatory patterns were selected according to the presence of surface defects, and a continuous transition from large amplitude/low frequency oscillations (type L) on smooth surfaces to small amplitude/high frequency oscillations (type S) on disordered surfaces was observed. Importantly, self-organized potential oscillations were found to be much more sensitive to the surface structure than conventional electrochemical signatures or even other in situ characterization methods. As a consequence, we proved the possibility of following the surface fine structure in situ and in a non-invasive manner by monitoring the temporal evolution of oscillatory patterns. From a mechanistic point of view, we describe the role played by surface defects and of the adsorbed and partially oxidized, dissolved species on the oscillations of type S and L.

Abstract
Cathodic current and potential oscillations were observed during electrodeposition of cadmium from a cyanide electrolyte on a vertical platinum electrode, in potentiostatic and galvanostatic experiments. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments revealed a region of negative real impedance in a range of non-zero frequencies, in the second descending branch with a positive slope of the N-shape current-potential curve. This kind of dynamical behaviour is characteristic of the HN-NDR oscillators (oscillators with the N-Shape current-potential curve and hidden negative differential resistance). The oscillations could be mainly attributed to the changes in the real active cathodic area, due to the adsorption of hydrogen molecules and their detachment from the surface. The instabilities of the electrochemical processes were characterized by time series, Fast Fourier Transforms and 2-D phase portraits showing quasi-periodic oscillations.

Abstract
The photoelectrochemical (PEC) decomposition of organic compounds in wastewater is investigated by using quantum chemical (DFT) methods to evaluate alternatives to water splitting for the production of renewable and sustainable hydrogen. Methanol is used as a model organic species for the theoretical evaluations of electrolysis on the surface of the widely available semiconductor hematite, α-Fe2 O3 , a widely studied photocatalyst. Three different α-Fe2 O3 surface terminations were investigated, including the predominant surface found in aqueous electrolytes, (OH)3 R. The PEC oxidation of methanol is energetically downhill, producing CO2 and protons. The protons are reduced to hydrogen on the cathode. Experimental PEC measurements were also performed for several polyalcoholic compounds, glycerol, erythritol, and xylitol, on α-Fe2 O3 as the photocatalyst and showed high incident-photon-to-current-efficiencies (IPCE) that were much greater than those of water splitting. Interestingly, high IPCEs were observed for hydrogen production from polyalcohols in the absence of any applied bias, which was not thought to be possible on hematite. These results support the potential application of PEC for hydrogen production by using widely available hematite for the PEC oxidation of selected components of organic wastewater present in large quantities from anthropogenic and industrial sources.

Abstract
We report a comprehensive study of the electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) on platinum with emphasis on the effects exerted by the electrolyte pH, the EG concentration, and temperature, under both regular and oscillatory conditions. We extracted and discussed parameters such as voltammetric activity, reaction orders (with respect to [EG]), oscillation's amplitude, frequency and waveform, and the evolution of the mean electrode potential at six pH values from 0 to 14. In addition, we obtained the apparent activation energies under several different conditions. Overall, we observed that increasing the electrolyte pH results in a discontinuous transition in most properties studied under both voltammetric and oscillatory regimes. As a relevant result in this direction, we found that the increase in the reaction order with pH is mediated by a minimum (~ 0) at pH = 12. Furthermore, the solution pH strongly affects all features investigated, c.f. the considerable increase in the oscillatory frequency and the decrease in the, oscillatory, activation energy as the pH increase. We suggest that adsorbed CO is probably the main surface-blocking species at low pH, and its absence at high pH is likely to be the main reason behind the differences observed. The size of the parameter region investigated and the amount of comparable parameters and properties presented in this study, as well as the discussion that followed illustrate the strategy of combining investigations under conventional and oscillatory regimes of electrocatalytic systems.

Abstract
In this study we address the problem of the response of a (electro)chemical oscillator towards chemical perturbations of different magnitudes. The chemical perturbation was achieved by addition of distinct amounts of trifluoromethanesulfonate (TFMSA), a rather stable and non-specifically adsorbing anion, and the system under investigation was the methanol electro-oxidation reaction under both stationary and oscillatory regimes. Increasing the anion concentration resulted in a decrease in the reaction rates of methanol oxidation and a general decrease in the parameter window where oscillations occurred. Furthermore, the addition of TFMSA was found to decrease the induction period and the total duration of oscillations. The mechanism underlying these observations was derived mathematically and revealed that inhibition in the methanol oxidation through blockage of active sites was found to further accelerate the intrinsic non-stationarity of the unperturbed system. Altogether, the presented results are among the few concerning the experimental assessment of the sensitiveness of an oscillator towards chemical perturbations. The universal nature of the complex chemical oscillator investigated here might be used for reference when studying the dynamics of other less accessible perturbed networks of (bio)chemical reactions.

Abstract
As in the case of most small organic molecules, the electro-oxidation of methanol to CO(2) is believed to proceed through a so-called dual pathway mechanism. The direct pathway proceeds via reactive intermediates such as formaldehyde or formic acid, whereas the indirect pathway occurs in parallel, and proceeds via the formation of adsorbed carbon monoxide (CO(ad)). Despite the extensive literature on the electro-oxidation of methanol, no study to date distinguished the production of CO(2) from direct and indirect pathways. Working under, far-from-equilibrium, oscillatory conditions, we were able to decouple, for the first time, the direct and indirect pathways that lead to CO(2) during the oscillatory electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum. The CO(2) production was followed by differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and the individual contributions of parallel pathways were identified by a combination of experiments and numerical simulations. We believe that our report opens some perspectives, particularly as a methodology to be used to identify the role played by surface modifiers in the relative weight of both pathways-a key issue to the effective development of catalysts for low temperature fuel cells.

Abstract
The spontaneous oscillations of the cell voltage and output power density of a PEMFC (with PtRu/C anode) using CO-containing H(2) streams as anodic fuels have been observed during galvanostatic operating. It is ascribed to the dynamic coupling of the CO adsorption (poisoning) and the electrochemical CO oxidation (reactivating) processes in the anode chamber of the single PEMFC. Accompanying the cell voltage and power density oscillations, the discrete CO concentration oscillations at the anode outlet of the PEMFC were also detected, which directly confirms the electrochemical CO oxidation taking place in the anode chamber during galvanostatic operating.

Abstract
We extend the microscopic Poisson-Nernst-Planck theory of the effects of mobile charge carriers, completely blocked at the electrodes, on the properties of dielectric materials by incorporating a finite speed of response propagation. The usual microscopic theory is based on the assumption that the diffusion current is given by Fick's law, relating the current density with the gradient of concentration at the same time. On the contrary we assume that the flux of diffusing particles is delayed with respect to the concentration gradient, as suggested by extended thermodynamics formulations. We show that, in the hyperbolic diffusion regime approximation, new trends for the real and imaginary parts of the small-signal electrical impedance of a dielectric containing ions versus the frequency of the applied voltage are expected when the delay time is comparable with the Debye relaxation time. In particular, at sufficiently high frequencies the real part of the conductivity, normally independent of frequency, decreases toward zero because of the finite, rather than the infinite propagation speed present in the hyperbolic diffusion regime model.

Abstract
Due to their high stability in general acidic solutions, SiO(2) nanoparticles were selected as the second catalyst for ethanol oxidation in sulfuric acid aqueous solution. Pt-SiO(2) nanocatalysts were prepared in this paper. The micrography and elemental composition of Pt-SiO(2) nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The electrocatalytic properties of Pt-SiO(2) nanocatalysts for ethanol oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Under the same Pt loading mass and experimental conditions for ethanol oxidation, Pt-SiO(2) nanocatalysts show higher activity than PtRu/C (E-Tek), Pt/C (E-Tek), and Pt catalysts. Additionally, Pt-SiO(2) nanocatalysts possess good anti-poisoning ability. The results indicate that Pt-SiO(2) nanocatalysts may have good potential applications in direct ethanol fuel cells.
