Abstract
Neurotransmitters (NTs) with hydroxyl groups can now be identified electrochemically, utilizing a variety of electrodes and voltammetric techniques. In particular, in monoamine, the position of the hydroxyl groups might alter the sensing properties of a certain neurotransmitter. Numerous research studies using electrodes modified on their surfaces to better detect specific neurotransmitters when other interfering factors are present are reviewed to improve the precision of these measures. An investigation of the monoamine neurotransmitters at nanoscale using electrochemical methods is the primary goal of this review article. It will be used to determine which sort of electrode is ideal for this purpose. The use of carbon materials, such as graphite carbon fiber, carbon fiber micro-electrodes, glassy carbon, and 3D printed electrodes are only some of the electrodes with surface modifications that can be utilized for this purpose. Electrochemical methods for real-time detection and quantification of monoamine neurotransmitters in real samples at the nanomolar level are summarized in this paper.

Abstract
In this research, a facile one-pot method was used to synthesize gold/poly-3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene/carbon nanotube (AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs) composite material. The composite material was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Then the synthesized nanocomposite material was dropped on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to improve the detection performance of dopamine with a high concentration of ascorbic acid and uric acid. The electrochemical behavior of AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs/GCE was studied by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under optimum conditions, AuNPs/PEDOT/CNTs/GCE showed a good linear response in the concentration range from 9.14 to 29.704 μM with a detection limit (LOD) and sensitivity of 0.283 μM and 1.557 μA μM-1, respectively. This sensor was applied to detect practical samples with good average recovery. It also exhibited good reproducibility and stability.

Abstract
In this study, an effective and simple direct printing method was developed to create sensing devices on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) to detect multiple species simultaneously. Two sensing materials, graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), were printed on one SPCE for detection of multiple biochemical substances. Printed layers of the GONRs and PEDOT:PSS mixture (GONRs & PEDOT:PSS) on SPCE showed embedment of GONRs in the PEDOT:PSS layer and diminished the electrochemical activity of GONRs. In contrast, by printing the GONRs and PEDOT:PSS at separate locations (GONRs + PEDOT:PSS) on the same SPCE, the electrochemical activities of both GONRs and PEDOT:PSS can be preserved. Thus, without synthesizing new materials, the modified electrode is able to simultaneously detect ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA), and nitrite (NO2-), with high anodic oxidation currents and well-separated voltammetric peaks, in differential pulse voltammetry measurements. The detection limits for the four analytes are 41 nM (AA), 30 nM (DA), 11 nM (UA), and 18 nM (NO2-), respectively. The electrode can either detect single species separately or simultaneously determine specific concentrations of the four species in aqueous mixtures, and this can be further extended for many other electrochemical sensing applications.

Abstract
A novel glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with carbon-spheres has been fabricated through a simple casting procedure. The modified GCE displays high selectivity and excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and ascorbic acid (AA). In the co-existence system, the peak separations between AA and DA, DA and 5-HT, and AA and 5-HT are large up to 230, 180, and 410 mV, respectively. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) has been employed to simultaneously detect DA, 5-HT, and AA, and the linear calibration curves for DA, 5-HT, and AA are obtained in the range of 20.0-150.0 μM, 40.0-750.0 μM and 300.0-2,000.0 μM with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 2.0 μM, 0.7 μM and 0.6 μM, respectively. The proposed electrode has been applied to detect DA, 5-HT, and AA in real samples using standard addition method with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A dual-region modified electrode was designed and fabricated by means of partitioned electrodeposition of gold and platinum nanoparticles on an indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive glass for dual-component electrochemical detection. The two differently modified regions were assigned to detect two analytes, separately and simultaneously. The gold nanoparticle modified ITO region (AuNPs/ITO) was used for glucose detection while the platinum nanoparticle modified ITO region (PtNPs/ITO) for nitrite detection. The glucose oxidation peak current at 0.10 V on AuNPs/ITO exhibited a linear dependence on the concentration of glucose and was used to determine the concentration of glucose in dual-detection. The nitrite reduction peak current at PtNPs/ITO showed a nonlinear dependence on the concentration of nitrite. A theoretical model combining the adsorption-controlled and the mass-transfer-controlled kinetics was proposed to quantitatively describe the nonlinear behavior. Though the presence of glucose interfered with the electrochemical detection of nitrite, it was demonstrated that the influence of glucose on nitrite detection can be corrected. On the basis of the proposed theoretical model, the simultaneous dual-detection of glucose and nitrite was accomplished at ITO electrodes partitionally modified with AuNPs and PtNPs.

Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were effectively dispersed and functionalized by wrapping with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The ssDNA-SWNTs attach strongly on glass substrate and easily form a uniform film, making it possible for electrochemical analysis and sensing. The film was fabricated into a working electrode, which exhibited good electrochemical voltammetric properties, such as flat and wide potential window, well-defined quasi-reversible voltammetric responses, and quick electron transfer for a Fe(CN)6(3-)/Fe(CN)6(4) system, indicating that the ssDNA-SWNTs film should be a good analytical electrode for electrochemical detection or sensing. This was demonstrated by highly selective and sensitive detection of a low concentration of dopamine in the presence of excess ascorbic acid.

Abstract
A simple method using an unmodified edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (EPPGE) is reported for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA), serotonin (ST) and ascorbic acid (AA). The performance of this electrode is superior to other unmodified carbon-based electrodes and also to many modified electrodes in terms of detection limit, sensitivity and peak separation for determination of DA, ST and AA. Using this method, detection limits of 90 nM, 60 nM and 200 nM were obtained for DA, ST and AA respectively. No electrode fouling is observed during a set of experiments and good sensitivity is obtained for the simultaneous determination of DA, ST and AA. The peaks for the three species are well resolved from each other and the electrode is successfully utilised for their determination in standard and real samples.

Abstract
Titanium carbide (TiC) nanoparticles are readily deposited onto tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) electrodes in the form of thin porous films. The nanoparticle deposits are electrically highly conducting and electrochemically active. In aqueous media (at pH 7) and at applied potentials positive of 0.3 V vs. SCE partial anodic surface oxidation and formation (at least in part) of novel core-shell TiC-TiO2 nanoparticles is observed. Significant thermal oxidation of TiC nanoparticles by heating in air occurs at a temperature of 250 degrees C and leads first to core-shell TiC-TiO2 nanoparticles, next at ca. 350 degrees C to TiO2 (anatase), and finally at temperatures higher than 750 degrees C to TiO2 (rutile). Electrochemically and thermally partially oxidized TiC nanoparticles still remain very active and for some redox systems electrocatalytically active. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), temperature dependent XRD, quartz crystal microbalance, and voltammetric measurements are reported. The electrocatalytic properties of the core-shell TiC-TiO2 nanoparticulate films are surveyed for the oxidation of hydroquinone, ascorbic acid, and dopamine in aqueous buffer media. In TiC-TiO2 core-shell nanoparticle films TiO2 surface reactivity can be combined with TiC conductivity.

Abstract
A selective dopamine determination using a nafion-coated clinoptilolite-modified carbon paste electrode in the presence of ascorbic acid was studied. Both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) were used for measurements of dopamine. To improve the selectivity of the clinoptilolite-modified carbon paste electrode in presence of a high concentration of ascorbic acid, the electrode surface was coated with nafion membrane. Experimental parameters affecting the determination of dopamine, including the clinoptilolite ratio, nafion membrane thickness, preconcentration time, preconcentration solution pH, stripping solution pH and interferences are discussed. The developed sensor has a wide linear range, a low detection limit, and good stability and reproducibility. The sensor offers a good alternative to existing analytical methods for dopamine, permits a relatively short analysis time, and is simple, selective and inexpensive.

Abstract
An amperometric biosensor for total biogenic amine determinations, using a carbon paste electrode modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme is described. The HRP immobilization on graphite was made using bovine serum albumin, carbodiimide and glutaraldehyde. The biosensor response was optimized using serotonin and it presented the best performance in 0.1 mol l(-1) phosphate buffer (pH=7.0) containing 10 micromol l(-1) of hydrogen peroxide. Under optimized operational conditions at -50 mV versus SCE, a linear response range from 40 to 470 ng ml(-1) was obtained. The detection limit was 17 ng ml(-1) and the response time was 0.5s. The proposed sensor presented a stable response during 4h under continuous monitoring. The difference of the response between six sensor preparations was <2%. The sensor was applied in the determination of total biogenic amines (neurotransmitters) in rat blood samples with success, obtaining a recovery average of 102%.

Abstract
A chemically modified electrode based on the carbon nanotube film-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) is described for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT). The multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) film-coated GCE exhibits a marked enhancement effect on the current response of DA and 5-HT and lowers oxidation overpotentials. The responses of DA and 5-HT merge into a large peak at a bare GCE, but they yield two well-defined oxidation peaks at the MWNT film-coated GCE. The experimental parameters were optimized, and a direct electrochemical method for the simultaneous determination of DA and 5-HT was proposed. The interference of ascorbic acid (AA) was investigated, and the results showed that a large excess of AA did not interfere with the voltammetric responses of DA and 5-HT. The modified electrode has been successfully applied for the assay of 5-HT and DA in human blood serum.

Abstract
In this study, a wall-jet flow cell with a GRC (graphite reinforced by carbon) electrode was designed for the amperometric detection of phenol and chlorophenols in liquid chromatography. The voltammetric responses of these analytes at the GRC electrodes are very similar to those at conventional glassy carbon electrodes. As the GRC electrodes were made of the same materials as commercially available mechanical pencil leads, they exhibit the advantages of low cost, simple surface renewability, lower residual current, and good electrode-to-electrode reproducibility, and thus can be used as disposable-type electrodes. Chromatographic separations of phenol, o-chlorophenol (o-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were achieved with an ODS column using a mobile phase containing a mixture of CH3CN and H20 (40:60) containing 25 mM L-(+)tartaric acid (pH = 4.5). Amperometric detections were based on the electrochemical oxidation of these compounds around +0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Under the optimized conditions, linear calibrations were obtained in a range up to 100 microM for phenol, o-CP, 2,4-DCP, 2,4,6-TCP, and 200 microM for PCP, with the correlation coefficients r2 of 0.9992, 0.9997, 0.9986, 0.9992, and 0.9968, respectively. The chromatographic detection limits for the tested analytes were obtained at pmol levels.
