Intake of dietary soy isoflavones in relation to perimenstrual symptoms of Korean women living in the USA

This study was conducted to identify the potential relationship between the dietary intake level of soy isoflavones and perimenstrual symptomatology. The research design was a cross-sectional study. The sample was made up of 84 Korean women living in the USA, aged 28-40 years. The Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) and the Food Frequency Questionnaire were used as measurement tools. The soy isoflavone intake was significantly correlated with MDQ scores in the menstrual phase. In conclusion, the beneficial effect of dietary soy isoflavones on certain menstrual symptoms was established, suggesting that soy isoflavones could be one of the dietary factors related to the complexity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The positive effect of soy isoflavones on PMS warrants further study.

Some epidemiologic data suggest that soy isoflavones play an important role in preventing breast cancer in Asian women and promoting women's health in a variety of ways. However, the use of soy isoflavones in women with breast cancer is controversial. Risks and benefits exist regarding the use of soy isoflavones by breast cancer survivors.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of soy isoflavones to promote health in breast cancer survivors remains controversial because of scant scientific data.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING

Nurses should not only provide updated information to the public but also interpret research results carefully. More clinical trials need to be conducted on a longitudinal basis with the enrollment of breast cancer survivors.

Coeliac disease and reproductive disorders: a neglected association

Coeliac disease is a chronic disease caused by a permanent intolerance to ingested gluten resulting in immunologically mediated inflammatory damage of the small-intestinal mucosa. The wide spectrum of clinical symptoms is partly due to the malnourished state caused by the malabsorption of macro- and micronutrients. Fertility problems, sexual dysfunction and obstetrical complications are more frequently observed in patients with coeliac disease. These reproductive disorders may be a consequence of the endocrine derangements caused by selective nutrient deficiencies. Nowadays, the early diagnosis and treatment of coeliac disease is possible and not very costly. Therefore, coeliac disease must be seriously considered in the preconceptional screening and treatment of patients with reproductive disorders.
