Abstract
A series of novel cobalt bis(dicarbollide) based amidines were synthesized by the nucleophilic addition of primary and secondary amines to highly activated B-N+≡C-R triple bond of the propionitrilium derivative [8-EtC≡N-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)]. The reactions with primary amines result in the formation of mixtures of E and Z isomers of amidines, whereas the reactions with secondary amines lead selectively to the E-isomers. The crystal molecular structures of E-[8-EtC(NMe2)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)], E-[8-EtC(NEt2)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2- C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)] and E-[8-EtC(NC5H10)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)] were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Chemical, pharmacological, and clinical research on anticancer coordination complexes has led to noteworthy anticancer drugs such as cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin. Although these compounds are effective chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of different tumors, they are associated with high toxicity and numerous side effects. Several studies have shown that the range of platinum complexes with antitumor activity is not limited to structural analogs of cisplatin. Therefore, the development of convenient anticancer drugs that can be effectively used for the treatment of human tumors has become the main goal of most research groups in this field. In this sense, active platinum complexes without NH groups, transplatinum complexes, multinuclear complexes, cationic complexes, and several classes of palladium(II) complexes have emerged. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of two Pt(II) or Pd(II) complexes with PyTz (2-(2-pyridyl)iminotetrahydro-1,3-thiazine), a thiazine derivative ligand, with the formula [MCl2(PyTz)]·C2H6O (M = Pt(II) or Pd(II)) were reported. The potential anticancer ability of both complexes was evaluated in epithelial cervix carcinoma HeLa, human ovary adenocarcinoma SK-OV-3, human histiocytic lymphoma U-937, and human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cell lines. Interestingly, the Pt(II) complex showed great cytotoxic potential against all tumor cell lines tested, whereas the Pd(II) complex displayed slight antitumor actions.

Abstract
A seemingly simple combination of [Zn(quin)2(H2O)] (quin− = quinaldinate) and a selected secondary cyclic amine, piperidine (pipe), pyrrolidine (pyro) or morpholine (morph), afforded in acetonitrile a number of products: anionic homoleptic quinaldinate, neutral heteroleptic quinaldinate/amine and quinaldinate/amidine complexes. The piperidine and pyrrolidine systems underwent reaction with acetonitrile to give amidines. The in situ formed piperidinoacetamidine (pipeam) or pyrrolidinoacetamidine (pyroam) coordinated to zinc(ii). Reactions with piperidine led to trans-[Zn(quin)2(pipe)2]·2CH3CN (1), [Zn(quin)2(pipe)]·cis-[Zn(quin)2(pipe)2] (2), pipeH[Zn(quin)3]·CH3CN (3), [Zn(quin)2(pipeam)]·CH3CN (4a), [Zn(quin)2(pipeam)]·2CHCl3 (4b), pipeamH[Zn(quin)3] (5) and pipeamH[Zn(quin)2(CH3COO)]·acetamide (6) (pipeH+ and pipeamH+ denote protonated amine or amidine). By analogy, [Zn(quin)2(pyro)2] (7), pyroH[Zn(quin)3]·CH3CN (8), pyroH[Zn(quin)2Cl] (9), [Zn(quin)2(pyroam)]·CH3CN·0.5pyroam·0.5H2O (10a), [Zn(quin)2(pyroam)]·2CHCl3 (10b), [Zn(quin)2(pyroam)]·CH2Cl2 (10c) and pyroamH[Zn(quin)3] (11) were obtained in the pyrrolidine reactions. The morpholine system allowed isolation of only two novel products, trans-[Zn(quin)2(morph)2] (12) and morphH[Zn(quin)3]·CH3CN (13). Importantly, no amidine could be isolated. Instead, in autoclaves at 105 °C morpholine degraded to ammonia, as confirmed by mass spectrometry of the gas phase. pyroamH[Zn(quin)3] exists in two polymorphs which differ in the binding modes of quinaldinate ligands. In 11triclinic, the metal ion of [Zn(quin)3]− features a five-coordinate environment, whereas that in 11monoclinic is surrounded by six donors. Stabilities of the [Zn(quin)3]− isomers were assessed with DFT calculations. The one with a six-coordinate zinc(ii) ion was found to be more stable than its five-coordinate counterpart. Favorable intermolecular interactions in the solid state stabilize both and reduce the energy difference between them. The calculations show the conversion of the five-coordinate [Zn(quin)3]− into its coordinatively saturated isomer to be an almost barrierless process. Piperidine and pyrrolidine, both belonging to a group of secondary cyclic amines, reacted with acetonitrile in the presence of zinc(ii) to give the corresponding amidines that coordinated to the metal through their imine nitrogen.![]()

Abstract
Eluding apoptosis represents the hallmark of tumoral cell behavior. Cisplatin (CisPt) is a very common chemotherapeutic agent to treat cancer by reestablishing apoptotic mechanisms of cell death. However, certain patients acquire resistance to CisPt as well as suffer nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, nausea and vomiting. The synthesis of new Pt(II) compounds represents an alternative to CisPt to avoid resistance and undesirable side effects. Pd(II) could be a Pt(II) surrogate given the similarity of coordination chemistry between them, thus widening the spectra of available anticancer drugs. Herein, we have synthesized and characterized two Pt(II) or Pd(II) complexes with TdTn (2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)imino-N-(2-thiazolin-2-yl)thiazolidine), a thiazoline derivative ligand, with formula [PtCl2(TdTn)] and [PdCl2(TdTn)]. The potential anticancer ability was evaluated in human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 and human histiocytic lymphoma U-937 cell lines. To that aim, U-937 and HT-29 cells were treated with TdTn, [PtCl2(TdTn)] and [PdCl2(TdTn)] for 24 h. The microscopy monitoring indicated that TdTn, [PtCl2(TdTn)] and [PdCl2(TdTn)] arrested the cell proliferation of U-937 and HT-29 cells with respect to control, in agreement with MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) analysis. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the ligand by its own showed antiproliferative effects in both cell lines. [PtCl2(TdTn)] and [PdCl2(TdTn)] caused caspase-3 activation in U-937 cells, simultaneously with caspase-9 activation due to complexes; however, in HT-29 caspase-3 activation occurred simultaneously with caspase-8 activation induced by the ligand TdTn. Only metal complexes were able to induce ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) generation in U-937 cells, but not TdTn. In HT-29 cells neither the metal complexes, nor the ligand induced ROS generation.

Abstract
One of the highest thermoresistant thermosetting resins ever studied so far, oligosilylarylnitrile resin, was investigated first in this study. Oligosilylarylnitrile was synthesized by lithium-reduced Wurtz-Fittig condensation reaction, and the prepared viscous resin exhibited moderate rheological behaviors while heated purely or together with 20% polysilazane as a cross-linking agent. The thermal curing temperatures were found by differential scanning calorimetry at 268 °C (pure) and 158 °C (with the polysilazane cross-linking agent), which is comparably close to that of polysilylarylacetylene resin (normally at 220-250 °C) but much lower than those of polyimide and phthalonitrile resins (normally >300 °C), indicating the admirable material processability of oligosilylnitrile. The cured oligosilylarylnitrile resins have extremely high thermal resistance, indicated by the results of thermogravimetric analysis (the mass residue at 800 °C is >90% under N2) and dynamic mechanical analysis (the glass-transition temperature is >420 °C). The mechanical property of the oligosilylarylnitrile-matrixed silica-cloth reinforced laminate is comparably close to those of polyimide and phthalonitrile but much higher than that of polysilylarylacetylene, indicating the enviable thermal and mechanical properties of oligosilylnitrile. Thus, among the high-temperature resins ever studied so far, the oligosilylarylnitrile resin was found to have the almost best comprehensive characteristics of processability and properties.

Abstract
Imino ligands have proven to be able to activate the trans geometry of platinum(II) complexes towards antitumor activity. These ligands, like aromatic N-donor heterocycles, have a planar shape but, different from the latter, have still an H atom on the coordinating nitrogen which can be involved in H-bond formation. Three classes of imino ligands have been extensively investigated: iminoethers (HN=C(R)OR'), ketimines (HN=CRR'), and amidines (HN=C(R)NR'R″). The promising efficacy of the platinum compounds with amidines (activity comparable to that of cisplatin for cis complexes and much greater than that of transplatin for trans complexes) prompted us to extend the investigation to amidine complexes with a bulkier organic residue (R = t-Bu). The tert-butyl group can confer greater affinity for lipophilic environments, thus potentiating the cellular uptake of the compound. In the present study we describe the synthesis and characterization of pivaloamidine complexes of platinum(II), (cis and trans-[PtCl2(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}] and cis and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}2]), platinum(III) ([Pt2Cl4{HN=C(t-Bu)NH}2(NH3)2]), and platinum(IV) (trans-[PtCl4(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}] and trans-[PtCl4{Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}2]). The cytotoxicity of all new Pt complexes was tested toward a panel of cultured cancer cell lines, including cisplatin and multidrug resistant variants. In addition, cellular uptake and DNA binding, perturbations of cell cycle progression, induction of apoptosis, and p53 activation were investigated for the most promising compound trans-[PtCl2(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}]. Remarkably, the latter complex was able to overcome both acquired and intrinsic cisplatin resistance.

Abstract
The reactions of the nitrile complexes cis- and trans-[PtCl2(NCR)2] (R = Me, Et, CH2Ph, Ph) with an excess of ethanethiol, EtSH, in the presence of a catalytic amount of n-BuLi in tetrahydrofuran (THF), afforded in good yield the bis-imino thioether derivatives cis-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)R}2] (R = Me (1), Et (2), CH2Ph (3), Ph (4)) and trans-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)R}2] (R = Me (5), Et (6), CH2Ph (7), Ph (8)). The imino thioether ligands assumed the E configuration corresponding to a cis addition of the thiol to the nitrile triple bond. The spectroscopic properties of these complexes have been reported along with the molecular structures of 1, 2, and 7 as established by X-ray crystallography which indicated that these compounds exhibit square-planar coordination geometry around the platinum center. Four N-H···Cl intermolecular contacts (N-H···Cl ca. 2.5-2.7 Å) between each chlorine atom and the N-H proton of the imino thioether ligand gave rise to "dimers" Pt2Cl4L4 (L = imino thioether) formed by two PtCl2L2 units. The cytotoxic properties of these new platinum(II) complexes were evaluated against various human cancer cell lines. Among all derivatives, trans-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)CH2Ph}2] showed the greatest in vitro cytotoxic activity being able to decrease cancer cell viability roughly 3-fold more effectively than cisplatin.

Abstract
Platinum amidine complexes represent a new class of potential antitumor drugs that contain the imino moiety HN=C(sp(2)) bonded to the platinum center. They can be related to the iminoether derivatives, which were recently shown to be the first Pt(II) compounds with a trans configuration endowed with anticancer activity. The chemical and biological properties of platinum amidine complexes, and more generally of platinum imino derivatives, can be rationally modified through suitable synthetic procedures with the aim of improving their cytotoxicity and antitumor activity. The addition of protic nucleophiles to nitriles coordinated to platinum in various oxidation states can offer a wide variety of complexes with chemical, structural, and physical properties specifically tuned for a more efficacious biological response.

Abstract
The reactions of cyclopropylamine, cyclopentylamine, and cyclohexylamine with trans-[PtCl2(NCMe)2] afforded the bis-cationic complexes trans-[Pt(amine)2(Z-amidine)2]2+[Cl-]2, 1-3. The solution behavior and biological activity have been studied in different solvents (DMSO, water, polyethylene glycol (PEG 400), and polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEG-DME 500)). The biological activity was strongly influenced by the cycloaliphatic amine ring size, with trans-[Pt(NH2CH(CH2)4CH2)2{N(H) horizontal lineC(CH3)N(H)CH(CH2)4CH2}2]2+[Cl-]2 (3) being the most active compound. Complex 3 overcame both cisplatin and MDR resistance, inducing cancer cell death through p53-mediated apoptosis. Alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis experiments indicated direct DNA damage, reasonably attributable to DNA adducts of trans-[PtCl(amine)(Z-amidine)2][Cl] species, which can evolve to produce disruptive and nonrepairable lesions on DNA, thus leading to the drug-induced programmed cancer cell death. Preliminary in vivo antitumor studies on C57BL mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma highlighted that complex 3 promoted a significant and dose-dependent tumor growth inhibition without adverse side effects.

Abstract
Diffusion of ammonia into CH(2)Cl(2) solutions of the dialkylcyanamide complexes cis- or trans-[PtCl(2)(RCN)(2)] (R = NMe(2), NEt(2), NC(5)H(10)) at 20-25 degrees C leads to metal-mediated cyanamide-ammonia coupling to furnish, depending on reaction time, one or another type of novel bisguanidine compound, i.e. the molecular cis- or trans-[PtCl(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)] (cis- and trans-) and the cationic cis- or trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)](Cl)(2) (cis- and trans-) complexes. Compounds cis- or trans- were converted to cis- or trans-, accordingly, upon prolonged treatment with NH(3) in CH(2)Cl(2). The ammination of the relevant nitrile complexes cis- or trans-[PtCl(2)(RCN)(2)] (R = Et, CH(2)Ph, Ph) in CH(2)Cl(2) solutions affords only the cationic compounds cis- or trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)](Cl)(2) (cis- and trans-). The formulation of was supported by satisfactory C, H and N elemental analyses, agreeable ESI(+)-MS (or FAB(+)-MS), IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopies. The structures of trans-, trans-, cis-, trans-, cis-, and cis- were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction disclosing structural features and showing that the ammination gives ligated guanidines and amidines in the E- and Z-forms, respectively, where both correspond to the trans-addition of NH(3) to the nitrile species.

Abstract
New benzyliminoether derivatives [PtCl2{N(H)=C(OMe)CH2Ph}2] of cis (1a, 1b) and trans (2a, 2b) geometry were prepared and characterized by means of elemental analysis, multinuclear NMR and FT-IR techniques, and X-ray crystallography; this latter was carried out for 1b. The cytotoxic properties of these new platinum(II) complexes were evaluated in terms of cell growth inhibition against a panel of different types of human cancer cell lines. cis-[PtCl2{E-N(H)=C(OMe)CH2Ph}2] (1a) was significantly more potent than cisplatin against all tumor cell lines tested, showing IC50 values from about 2- to 17-fold lower than the reference compound. Chemosensitivity tests performed on cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant cell lines have demonstrated that complex 1a is able to overcome cisplatin resistance. Analyzing the mechanism by which complex 1a led to cell death, we have found that it induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner, accompanied by the activation of caspase-3. The in vivo studies carried out using two transplantable tumor models (L1210 leukemia and Lewis lung carcinoma) showed that derivative 1a induced a remarkable antitumor activity in both tumor models, as measured by prolonged survival and reduced tumor mass compared to control groups.

Abstract
A series of platinum(II) amidine complexes were previously prepared with the aim of obtaining a new class of platinum-based antitumour drugs. This series includes compounds of the type cis--[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Me}2] and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Me}2] (1, 2), cis-[PtCl2{E-HN=C(NMe2)Me}2] and trans-[PtCl2{E-HN=C(NMe2)Me}2] (3, 4), cis-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Ph}2] and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Ph}2] (5, 6), and cis-[PtCl2{HN=C(NMe2)Ph}2] and trans-[PtCl2{HN=C(NMe2)Ph}2] (7, 8). The reactions with dimethyl sulfoxide were studied for complexes 5-8; the formation of cationic species containing coordinated dimethyl sulfoxide was demonstrated by NMR experiments and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. In this work, the amidine platinum(II) complexes were tested for their in vitro cytotoxicity on a panel of various human cancer cell lines. The results indicate that the benzamidine complex 8 was the most effective derivative also circumventing acquired cisplatin resistance as demonstrated by chemosensitivity tests performed on cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant cell lines. The studies concerning the cellular DNA damage on both parental chemosensitive and resistant sublines suggest for the new trans-amidine complex a different mechanism of action compared with that exhibited by cisplatin.

Abstract
Iminoacylation of acetone oxime Me(2)C[double bond, length as m-dash]NOH upon reaction with trans-[PtCl(2)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)(2)] and [2 + 3] cycloaddition of acyclic nitrone (-)O(+)N(Me) = C(H)(C(6)H(4)Me-4) to a nitrile ligand in lead to the formation of mono-imine trans-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)] [imine-a = NH[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH(2)CO(2)Me)ON = CMe(2)] and mono-oxadiazoline trans-[PtCl(2)(oxadiazoline-a)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)] [oxadiazoline-a = [upper bond 1 start]N[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH(2)CO(2)Me)ON(Me)C[upper bond 1 end](H)(C(6)H(4)Me-4)] unsymmetric mixed ligand complexes, respectively, as the main products. Reactions of or with acetone oxime , cyclic nitrone (-)O(+)N = CHCH(2)CH(2)C[upper bond 1 end]Me(2) or N,N-diethylhydroxylamine give access, in moderate to good yields, to the unsymmetric mixed ligand oxadiazoline and/or imine complexes trans-[PtCl(2)(oxadiazoline-a)(imine-a)] , trans-[PtCl(2)(oxadiazoline-a)(oxadiazoline-b)] [oxadiazoline-b = [upper bond 1 start]N[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH(2)CO(2)Me)O[lower bond 1 start]NC[upper bond 1 end](H)CH(2)CH(2)C[lower bond 1 end]Me(2)], trans-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(imine-b)] [imine-b = NH = C(CH(2)CO(2)Me)ONEt(2)] or trans-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(oxadiazoline-b)] . The cis mono-imine mixed ligand complex cis-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)] is the major product from the reaction of cis-[PtCl(2)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)(2)] with the oxime , while the di-imine compound cis-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(2)] is a minor product. Reaction of cis-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)] with N,N-diethylhydroxylamine or the cyclic nitrone affords, in good yields, the unsymmetric mixed ligand complexes cis-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(imine-b)] or cis-[PtCl(2)(imine-a)(oxadiazoline-b)] , respectively. All these complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR and (1)H, (13)C and (195)Pt NMR spectroscopies, and FAB(+)-MS. The X-ray structural analysis of trans-[PtCl(2){NH=C(CH(2)CO(2)Me)ON=CMe(2)}(NCCH(2)CO(2)Me)] is also reported.

Abstract
The aim of this perspective is to highlight the continued development and application of amidines and guanidines as neutral, N-based donor ligands in coordination chemistry. From a sporadic interest dating back to the 1980s, work on these two closely related classes of compounds has steadily grown, with examples of evermore sophisticated substitution about the common ligand framework being developed to address specific problems in a number of fields of chemistry. These compounds have shown varied coordination modes at metals from across the periodic table, and examples of their application in a number of catalytic processes are emerging as the field matures.

Abstract
Addition of excess R(2)NCN to an aqueous solution of K(2)[PtCl(4)] led to the precipitation of [PtCl(2)(NCNR(2))(2)] (R(2) = Me(2) 1; Et(2) 2; C(5)H(10) 3; C(4)H(8)O, 4) in a cis/trans isomeric ratio which depends on temperature. Pure isomers cis-1-3 and trans-1-3 were separated by column chromatography on SiO(2), while trans-4 was obtained by recrystallization. Complexes cis-1-3 isomerize to trans-1-3 on heating in the solid phase at 110 degrees C; trans-1 has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Chlorination of the platinum(II) complexes cis-1-3 and trans-1-4 gives the appropriate platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl(4)(NCNR(2))(2)] (cis-5-7 and trans-5-8). The compound cis-6 was also obtained by treatment of [PtCl(4)(NCMe)(2)] with neat Et(2)NCN. The platinum(IV) complex trans-[PtCl(4)(NCNMe(2))(2)] (trans-5) in a mixture of undried Et(2)O and CH(2)Cl(2) undergoes facile hydrolysis to give trans-[PtCl(4)[(H)=C(NMe(2))OH](2)] (9; X-ray structure has been determined). The hydrolysis went to another direction with the cis-[PtCl(4)(NCNR(2))(2)] (cis-5-7) which were converted to the metallacycles [PtCl(4)[NH=C(NR(2))OC(NR(2))=NH]] (11-13) due to the unprecedented hydrolytic coupling of the two adjacent dialkylcyanamide ligands giving a novel (for both coordination and organic chemistry) diimino linkage. Compounds 11-13 and also 14 (R(2) = C(4)H(8)O) were alternatively obtained by the reaction between cis-[PtCl(4)(MeCN)(2)] and neat undried NCNR(2). The structures of complexes 11, 13, and 14 were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. All the platinum compounds were additionally characterized by elemental analyses, FAB mass-spectrometry, and IR and (1)H and (13)C[(1)H] NMR spectroscopies.

Abstract
The reaction between the platinum(IV) complex trans-[PtCl(4)(EtCN)(2)] and the amino alcohols NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH, NH(2)CH(2)CH(Me)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Ph)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Et)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Et)CH(2)OH-(S)-(+), and NH(2)CH(Pr(n)())CH(2)OH proceeds rapidly at room temperature in CH(2)Cl(2) to furnish the amidine complexes [PtCl(4)(HN=C(Et)NH(arcraise;)OH)(2)] (1-6) in good yield (70-80%). The related reaction between the platinum(II) complex trans-[PtCl(2)(EtCN)(2)] and monoethanolamine in a molar ratio of 1:2 in CH(2)Cl(2) results in the addition of 4 equiv of NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH per mole of complex to give [Pt(HN=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)(NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)](2+) (7). Formulation of 1-6 is based upon satisfactory C, H, N elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and (1)H, (13)C((1)H), (15)N, and (195)Pt NMR spectroscopies, while the structures of trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)] (1), trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(Me)OH-(R)-(-))(2)] (2), and trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(Et)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-))(2)] (4) were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The Z-amidine configuration of the ligands is preserved in CDCl(3) solutions as confirmed by gradient-enhanced (15)N,(1)H-HMQC spectroscopy and NOE experiments. The amidines, formed upon Pt(IV)-mediated nitrile-amino alcohol coupling, were liberated from their platinum(IV) complexes 1, 3, and 4 by reaction with Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2) (dppe) giving free NH=C(Et)NHCHRCH(2)OH (R = H 8, Et 9, Ph 10), with the substituents R of different types, and dppe oxides; the P-containing species were identified by (31)P((1)H) NMR spectroscopy. NOESY spectroscopy indicates that the liberated amidines retained the same configuration relative to the C=N double bond, i.e., syn-(H,Et)-NH=C(Et)NHCHRCH(2)OH. The liberated hydroxo-functionalized amidines 8-10 were converted into oxazolines (11-13) in the presence of a catalytic amount of ZnCl(2). A similar catalytic effect has also been reached using anhydrous MSO(4) (M = Cu, Co, Cd), CdCl(2), and AlCl(3).
