Abstract
A series of novel cobalt bis(dicarbollide) based amidines were synthesized by the nucleophilic addition of primary and secondary amines to highly activated B-N+≡C-R triple bond of the propionitrilium derivative [8-EtC≡N-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)]. The reactions with primary amines result in the formation of mixtures of E and Z isomers of amidines, whereas the reactions with secondary amines lead selectively to the E-isomers. The crystal molecular structures of E-[8-EtC(NMe2)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)], E-[8-EtC(NEt2)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2- C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)] and E-[8-EtC(NC5H10)=HN-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)(1',2'-C2B9H11)] were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The reaction of selenium diimide Se[N(t-Bu)]2 and PtCl2 afforded an N,N′-chelated complex [PtCl2{N,N′-Se[N(t-Bu)]2}] (1) in good yield and [PtCl2{N,N′-SeO[NH(t-Bu)]2}] (2) as a minor product. Attempts to prepare 2 by direct reaction of SeOCl2 with Li[NH(t-Bu)] in toluene followed by addition of PtCl2 produced cyclic Se4[N(t-Bu)]4 in solution (77Se NMR spectrum) and a small amount of the complex [PtCl3{Se,Se′,Se″-Se4[N(t-Bu)]4}][Pt2Cl5{Se,Se′,Se″-Se3[N(t-Bu)]2}]·3MeCN (3·3MeCN), which contains tridentate Se4[N(t-Bu)]4 in the cation and the novel, acyclic bridging ligand [SeN(t-Bu)SeN(t-Bu)Se]2– in the anion. The reaction of Se[N(t-Bu)]2 with [PtCl2(NCPh)2] in THF produced the dinuclear complex [Pt2Cl6{SeN(t-Bu)C(Ph)NH}2]·2C4H8O (4·2THF) as the major product and only a few crystals of 1. The possible formation of SeO[NH(t-Bu)]2 or 2 by the reaction of Se[N(t-Bu)]2 or 1, respectively, with adventitious water and the pathway for the production of 4 were investigated through density functional theory calculations. The X-ray structures of 1, 2, 3·3MeCN, and 4·2THF have been determined.

Abstract
Imino ligands have proven to be able to activate the trans geometry of platinum(II) complexes towards antitumor activity. These ligands, like aromatic N-donor heterocycles, have a planar shape but, different from the latter, have still an H atom on the coordinating nitrogen which can be involved in H-bond formation. Three classes of imino ligands have been extensively investigated: iminoethers (HN=C(R)OR'), ketimines (HN=CRR'), and amidines (HN=C(R)NR'R″). The promising efficacy of the platinum compounds with amidines (activity comparable to that of cisplatin for cis complexes and much greater than that of transplatin for trans complexes) prompted us to extend the investigation to amidine complexes with a bulkier organic residue (R = t-Bu). The tert-butyl group can confer greater affinity for lipophilic environments, thus potentiating the cellular uptake of the compound. In the present study we describe the synthesis and characterization of pivaloamidine complexes of platinum(II), (cis and trans-[PtCl2(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}] and cis and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}2]), platinum(III) ([Pt2Cl4{HN=C(t-Bu)NH}2(NH3)2]), and platinum(IV) (trans-[PtCl4(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}] and trans-[PtCl4{Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}2]). The cytotoxicity of all new Pt complexes was tested toward a panel of cultured cancer cell lines, including cisplatin and multidrug resistant variants. In addition, cellular uptake and DNA binding, perturbations of cell cycle progression, induction of apoptosis, and p53 activation were investigated for the most promising compound trans-[PtCl2(NH3){Z-HN=C(t-Bu)NH2}]. Remarkably, the latter complex was able to overcome both acquired and intrinsic cisplatin resistance.

Abstract
The reactions of the nitrile complexes cis- and trans-[PtCl2(NCR)2] (R = Me, Et, CH2Ph, Ph) with an excess of ethanethiol, EtSH, in the presence of a catalytic amount of n-BuLi in tetrahydrofuran (THF), afforded in good yield the bis-imino thioether derivatives cis-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)R}2] (R = Me (1), Et (2), CH2Ph (3), Ph (4)) and trans-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)R}2] (R = Me (5), Et (6), CH2Ph (7), Ph (8)). The imino thioether ligands assumed the E configuration corresponding to a cis addition of the thiol to the nitrile triple bond. The spectroscopic properties of these complexes have been reported along with the molecular structures of 1, 2, and 7 as established by X-ray crystallography which indicated that these compounds exhibit square-planar coordination geometry around the platinum center. Four N-H···Cl intermolecular contacts (N-H···Cl ca. 2.5-2.7 Å) between each chlorine atom and the N-H proton of the imino thioether ligand gave rise to "dimers" Pt2Cl4L4 (L = imino thioether) formed by two PtCl2L2 units. The cytotoxic properties of these new platinum(II) complexes were evaluated against various human cancer cell lines. Among all derivatives, trans-[PtCl2{E-N(H)═C(SEt)CH2Ph}2] showed the greatest in vitro cytotoxic activity being able to decrease cancer cell viability roughly 3-fold more effectively than cisplatin.

Abstract
Platinum amidine complexes represent a new class of potential antitumor drugs that contain the imino moiety HN=C(sp(2)) bonded to the platinum center. They can be related to the iminoether derivatives, which were recently shown to be the first Pt(II) compounds with a trans configuration endowed with anticancer activity. The chemical and biological properties of platinum amidine complexes, and more generally of platinum imino derivatives, can be rationally modified through suitable synthetic procedures with the aim of improving their cytotoxicity and antitumor activity. The addition of protic nucleophiles to nitriles coordinated to platinum in various oxidation states can offer a wide variety of complexes with chemical, structural, and physical properties specifically tuned for a more efficacious biological response.

Abstract
Addition of various RNH(2) to fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(CH(3)CN)]BF(4) (1) converts the acetonitrile ligand to the amidine ligand (a superbase) in fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NHR)]BF(4) products. Each complex has four conceivable isomers (E, E', Z, and Z') because the amidine CN bonds have double-bond character, and the two remote NHR group substituents are different. The reaction of 1 in acetonitrile is complete in 6 to 96 h (25 degrees C) and forms fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NHR)]BF(4) E' and Z isomers. Only the E' isomer formed crystals (R = methyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl, and benzyl). Upon dissolution of such crystals in acetonitrile-d(3), NMR spectra with highly dominant E' signals gradually changed (approximately 15 min at room temperature) to spectra with signals for an equilibrium mixture of E' and Z isomers. Such slow E'-to-Z isomer interchange is also indicated by 2D ROESY NMR data used primarily to assign solution structure. Equilibrium ratios (E':Z) of approximately 65:35 for R = methyl, isopropyl, and isobutyl and 83:17 for R = tert-butyl demonstrate that increasing the remote NHR group steric bulk above a threshold size favors the E' isomer. Consistent with this trend, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NH(2))]BF(4), with a remote NH(2) (low bulk) group, favors the Z isomer. In contrast, although the remote NH(benzyl) group in fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NH(CH(2)C(6)H(5))]BF(4) has only moderate bulk, the E' isomer has high abundance as a result of favorable 5,5'-Me(2)bipy/benzyl stacking, evidence for which is present in both solid and solution states. The fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NHR)]BF(4) E isomer can be detected in solvents of low polarity. However, the Z' isomer was not observed, undoubtedly because unfavorable remote-group clashes with the equatorial ligands destabilize this isomer. Challenge studies with a 5-fold excess of 4-dimethylaminopyridine in acetonitrile-d(3) establish that fac-[Re(CO)(3)(5,5'-Me(2)bipy)(HNC(CH(3))NHCH(CH(3))(2))]BF(4) is robust because the isopropylamidine ligand was not displaced, consistent with the superbase character of amidine ligands.

Abstract
The reactions of cyclopropylamine, cyclopentylamine, and cyclohexylamine with trans-[PtCl2(NCMe)2] afforded the bis-cationic complexes trans-[Pt(amine)2(Z-amidine)2]2+[Cl-]2, 1-3. The solution behavior and biological activity have been studied in different solvents (DMSO, water, polyethylene glycol (PEG 400), and polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEG-DME 500)). The biological activity was strongly influenced by the cycloaliphatic amine ring size, with trans-[Pt(NH2CH(CH2)4CH2)2{N(H) horizontal lineC(CH3)N(H)CH(CH2)4CH2}2]2+[Cl-]2 (3) being the most active compound. Complex 3 overcame both cisplatin and MDR resistance, inducing cancer cell death through p53-mediated apoptosis. Alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis experiments indicated direct DNA damage, reasonably attributable to DNA adducts of trans-[PtCl(amine)(Z-amidine)2][Cl] species, which can evolve to produce disruptive and nonrepairable lesions on DNA, thus leading to the drug-induced programmed cancer cell death. Preliminary in vivo antitumor studies on C57BL mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma highlighted that complex 3 promoted a significant and dose-dependent tumor growth inhibition without adverse side effects.

Abstract
Diffusion of ammonia into CH(2)Cl(2) solutions of the dialkylcyanamide complexes cis- or trans-[PtCl(2)(RCN)(2)] (R = NMe(2), NEt(2), NC(5)H(10)) at 20-25 degrees C leads to metal-mediated cyanamide-ammonia coupling to furnish, depending on reaction time, one or another type of novel bisguanidine compound, i.e. the molecular cis- or trans-[PtCl(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)] (cis- and trans-) and the cationic cis- or trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)](Cl)(2) (cis- and trans-) complexes. Compounds cis- or trans- were converted to cis- or trans-, accordingly, upon prolonged treatment with NH(3) in CH(2)Cl(2). The ammination of the relevant nitrile complexes cis- or trans-[PtCl(2)(RCN)(2)] (R = Et, CH(2)Ph, Ph) in CH(2)Cl(2) solutions affords only the cationic compounds cis- or trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2){NH=C(NH(2))R}(2)](Cl)(2) (cis- and trans-). The formulation of was supported by satisfactory C, H and N elemental analyses, agreeable ESI(+)-MS (or FAB(+)-MS), IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopies. The structures of trans-, trans-, cis-, trans-, cis-, and cis- were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction disclosing structural features and showing that the ammination gives ligated guanidines and amidines in the E- and Z-forms, respectively, where both correspond to the trans-addition of NH(3) to the nitrile species.

Abstract
Reactions of the nitrone CH3CH=N(CH3)O and the nitrile oxide CH3C[triple bond]NO with the nitrile complexes trans-[MCl2(N[triple bond]CCH3)2] (M = Pt, 1; Pd, 2) were investigated by theoretical methods at B3LYP and, for some processes, CCSD(T) levels of theory. The mechanisms of substitutions and cycloadditions were studied in detail. The former occur via a concerted asynchronous mechanism of dissociative type. The calculations of the metal-ligand bond energies in the starting complexes and substitution products and the analysis of structural features of the transition states indicate that the M-N bond dissociation (rather than M-O bond formation) is the step, which controls the reactivity of and in substitutions. The different chemical behaviours of the Pt and Pd complexes towards the 1,3-dipoles were investigated. The exclusive isolation of cycloaddition rather than substitution products in any solvents in the case of is both kinetically and thermodynamically controlled. The switch of the reaction mode from cycloaddition to substitution for 2 in CH2Cl2 solution is caused by the significantly lower Pd-N bond energy in comparison with the Pt-N bond energy, consistent with the higher lability of the Pd complexes. The different chemical behaviour of 2 in CH3CN and CH2Cl2 solvents is accounted for by the great excess of acetonitrile in the CH3CN solution rather than a different solvation character. The relative variation of Wiberg bond indices along the reaction path is proposed as a quantitative criterion for the classification of the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
New benzyliminoether derivatives [PtCl2{N(H)=C(OMe)CH2Ph}2] of cis (1a, 1b) and trans (2a, 2b) geometry were prepared and characterized by means of elemental analysis, multinuclear NMR and FT-IR techniques, and X-ray crystallography; this latter was carried out for 1b. The cytotoxic properties of these new platinum(II) complexes were evaluated in terms of cell growth inhibition against a panel of different types of human cancer cell lines. cis-[PtCl2{E-N(H)=C(OMe)CH2Ph}2] (1a) was significantly more potent than cisplatin against all tumor cell lines tested, showing IC50 values from about 2- to 17-fold lower than the reference compound. Chemosensitivity tests performed on cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant cell lines have demonstrated that complex 1a is able to overcome cisplatin resistance. Analyzing the mechanism by which complex 1a led to cell death, we have found that it induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner, accompanied by the activation of caspase-3. The in vivo studies carried out using two transplantable tumor models (L1210 leukemia and Lewis lung carcinoma) showed that derivative 1a induced a remarkable antitumor activity in both tumor models, as measured by prolonged survival and reduced tumor mass compared to control groups.

Abstract
The coupling between tetramethylguanidine, HN=C(NMe2)2, and coordinated organonitriles in the platinum(II) complexes cis/trans-[PtCl2(RCN)2] (R = Me, Et, Ph) proceeds rapidly under mild conditions to afford the diimino compounds containing two N-bound monodentate 1,3-diaza-1,3-diene ligands [PtCl2{NH=C(R)N=C(NMe2)2}2] (R = Et, trans-1; R = Ph, trans-2; R = Me, cis-3; R = Et, cis-4), and this reaction is the first observation of metal-mediated nucleophilic addition of a guanidine to ligated nitrile. Complexes 1-4 were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), X-ray diffraction, FAB mass spectrometry, IR, and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopies; assignment of signals from E/Z-forms of 1,3-diaza-1,3-diene ligands and verification of routes for their Z right harpoon over left harpoon E isomerization in solution were performed using 2D 1H,1H-COSY, 1H,13C-HETCOR, and 1D NOE NMR experiments. The newly formed and previously unknown 1,3-diaza-1,3-dienes NH=C(R)N=C(NMe2)2 were liberated from the platinum(II) complexes [PtCl2{NH=C(R)N=C(NMe2)2}2] (1-3) by substitution with 2 equiv of 1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) to give the uncomplexed HN=C(R)N=C(NMe2)2 species (5-7) in solution and the solid [Pt(dppe)2](Cl)2. The former were utilized in situ, after filtration of the latter, in the reaction with 1,3-di-p-tolylcarbodiimide, (p-tol)N=C=N(tol-p), in CDCl3 to generate (6E)-N,N-dimethyl-1-(4-methylphenyl)-6-[(4-methylphenyl)imino]-1,6-dihydro-1,3,5-triazin-2-amines) (8-10) due to the [4 + 2]-cycloaddition accompanying elimination of HNMe2. The formulation of 8-10 is based on ESI-MS, 1H, 13C{1H} NMR, and X-ray crystal structures determined for 9 and 10. The reaction of 1,3-diaza-1,3-dienes with 1,3-di-p-tolylcarbodiimide, described in this article, constitutes a novel synthetic approach to a useful class of heterocyclic species like 1,6-dihydro-1,3,5-triazines.

Abstract
A series of platinum(II) amidine complexes were previously prepared with the aim of obtaining a new class of platinum-based antitumour drugs. This series includes compounds of the type cis--[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Me}2] and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Me}2] (1, 2), cis-[PtCl2{E-HN=C(NMe2)Me}2] and trans-[PtCl2{E-HN=C(NMe2)Me}2] (3, 4), cis-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Ph}2] and trans-[PtCl2{Z-HN=C(NHMe)Ph}2] (5, 6), and cis-[PtCl2{HN=C(NMe2)Ph}2] and trans-[PtCl2{HN=C(NMe2)Ph}2] (7, 8). The reactions with dimethyl sulfoxide were studied for complexes 5-8; the formation of cationic species containing coordinated dimethyl sulfoxide was demonstrated by NMR experiments and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. In this work, the amidine platinum(II) complexes were tested for their in vitro cytotoxicity on a panel of various human cancer cell lines. The results indicate that the benzamidine complex 8 was the most effective derivative also circumventing acquired cisplatin resistance as demonstrated by chemosensitivity tests performed on cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant cell lines. The studies concerning the cellular DNA damage on both parental chemosensitive and resistant sublines suggest for the new trans-amidine complex a different mechanism of action compared with that exhibited by cisplatin.

Abstract
The aim of this perspective is to highlight the continued development and application of amidines and guanidines as neutral, N-based donor ligands in coordination chemistry. From a sporadic interest dating back to the 1980s, work on these two closely related classes of compounds has steadily grown, with examples of evermore sophisticated substitution about the common ligand framework being developed to address specific problems in a number of fields of chemistry. These compounds have shown varied coordination modes at metals from across the periodic table, and examples of their application in a number of catalytic processes are emerging as the field matures.

Abstract
Treatment of trans-[PtCl(4)(RCN)(2)] (R = Me, Et) with ethanol allowed the isolation of trans-[PtCl(4)[E-NH[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)]. The latter were reduced selectively, by the ylide Ph(3)P[double bond]CHCO(2)Me, to trans-[PtCl(2)[E-NH[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)]. The complexed imino esters NH[double bond]C(R)OEt were liberated from the platinum(II) complexes by reaction with 2 equiv of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) in chloroform; the cationic complex [Pt(dppe)(2)]Cl(2) precipitates almost quantitatively from the reaction mixture and can be easily separated by filtration to give a solution of NH[double bond]C(R)OEt with a known concentration of the imino ester. The imino esters efficiently couple with the coordinated nitriles in trans-[PtCl(4)(EtCN)(2)] to give, as the dominant product, [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] containing a previously unknown linkage, i.e., ligated N-(1-imino-propyl)-alkylimidic acid ethyl esters. In addition to [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt](2)], another compound was generated as the minor product, i.e., [PtCl(4)(EtCN)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt]], which was reduced to [PtCl(2)(EtCN)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt]], and this complex was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] are unstable toward hydrolysis and give EtOH and the acylamidine complexes trans-[PtCl(4)[Z-NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)], where the coordination to the Pt center results in the predominant stabilization of the imino tautomer NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O over the other form, i.e., NH(2)C(Et)[double bond]NC(R)[double bond]O, which is the major one for free acylamidines. The structures of trans-[PtCl(4)[Z-NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)] (R = Me, Et) were determined by X-ray studies. The complexes [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] were reduced to the appropriate platinum(II) compounds [PtCl(2)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)], which, similarly to the appropriate Pt(IV) compounds, rapidly hydrolyze to yield the acylamidine complexes [PtCl(2)[NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)] and EtOH. The latter acylamidine compounds were also prepared by an alternative route upon reduction of the corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. Besides the first observation of the platinum(IV)-mediated nitrile-imine ester integration, this work demonstrates that the application of metal complexes gives new opportunities for the generation of a great variety of imines (sometimes unreachable in pure organic chemistry) in metal-mediated conversions of organonitriles, the "storage" of imino species in the complexed form, and their synthetic utilization after liberation.

Abstract
The reaction between the platinum(IV) complex trans-[PtCl(4)(EtCN)(2)] and the amino alcohols NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH, NH(2)CH(2)CH(Me)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Ph)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Et)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-), NH(2)CH(Et)CH(2)OH-(S)-(+), and NH(2)CH(Pr(n)())CH(2)OH proceeds rapidly at room temperature in CH(2)Cl(2) to furnish the amidine complexes [PtCl(4)(HN=C(Et)NH(arcraise;)OH)(2)] (1-6) in good yield (70-80%). The related reaction between the platinum(II) complex trans-[PtCl(2)(EtCN)(2)] and monoethanolamine in a molar ratio of 1:2 in CH(2)Cl(2) results in the addition of 4 equiv of NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH per mole of complex to give [Pt(HN=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)(NH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)](2+) (7). Formulation of 1-6 is based upon satisfactory C, H, N elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and (1)H, (13)C((1)H), (15)N, and (195)Pt NMR spectroscopies, while the structures of trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)] (1), trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(2)CH(Me)OH-(R)-(-))(2)] (2), and trans-[PtCl(4)((Z)-NH=C(Et)NHCH(Et)CH(2)OH-(R)-(-))(2)] (4) were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The Z-amidine configuration of the ligands is preserved in CDCl(3) solutions as confirmed by gradient-enhanced (15)N,(1)H-HMQC spectroscopy and NOE experiments. The amidines, formed upon Pt(IV)-mediated nitrile-amino alcohol coupling, were liberated from their platinum(IV) complexes 1, 3, and 4 by reaction with Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2) (dppe) giving free NH=C(Et)NHCHRCH(2)OH (R = H 8, Et 9, Ph 10), with the substituents R of different types, and dppe oxides; the P-containing species were identified by (31)P((1)H) NMR spectroscopy. NOESY spectroscopy indicates that the liberated amidines retained the same configuration relative to the C=N double bond, i.e., syn-(H,Et)-NH=C(Et)NHCHRCH(2)OH. The liberated hydroxo-functionalized amidines 8-10 were converted into oxazolines (11-13) in the presence of a catalytic amount of ZnCl(2). A similar catalytic effect has also been reached using anhydrous MSO(4) (M = Cu, Co, Cd), CdCl(2), and AlCl(3).

Abstract
Pt(IV)-mediated addition of the sulfimide Ph2S = NH and the mixed sulfide/sulfimides o- and p-[PhS(=NH)](PhS)-C6H4 by the S=NH group to the metal-bound nitriles in the platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl4(RCN)2] proceeds smoothly at room temperature in CH2Cl2 and results in the formation of the heterodiazadiene compounds [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SR'Ph]2] (R' = Ph, R = Me, Et, CH2Ph, Ph; R' = o- and p-(PhS)C6H4; R = Et). While trans-[PtCl4(RCN)2] (R = Et, CH2Ph, Ph) reacting with Ph2S=NH leads exclusively to trans-[PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2], cis/trans-[PtCl4(MeCN)2] leads to cis/trans mixtures of [PtCl4[NH=C(Me)N=SPh2]2] and the latter have been separated by column chromatography. Theoretical calculations at both HF/HF and MP2//HF levels for the cis and trans isomers of [PtCl4[NH=C(Me)N=SMe2]2] indicate a higher stability for the latter. Compounds trans-[PtCl4[E-NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2] (R = Me, Et) and cis-[PtCl4[E-NH=C(Me)N=SPh2][Z-NH=C(Me)N=SPh2]] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complexes [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2] undergo hydrolysis when treated with HCl in nondried CH2Cl2 to achieve the amidines [PtCl4[NH=C(NH2)R]2] the compound with R = Et has been structurally characterized) and Ph2SO. The heterodiazadiene ligands, formed upon Pt(IV)-mediated RCN/sulfimide coupling, can be liberated from their platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SR'Ph]2] by reaction with Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2 (dppe) giving free NH=C(R)=SR'Ph and the dppe oxides, which constitutes a novel route for such rare types of heterodiazadienes whose number has also been extended. The hybrid sulfide/sulfimide species o- and p-[PhS(=NH)](PhS)C6H4 also react with the Pt(II) nitrile complex [PtCl2(MeCN)2] but the coupling--in contrast to the Pt(IV) species--gives the chelates [PtCl2[M-I=C(Me)N=S(Ph)C6H4SPh]]. The X-ray crystal structure of [PtCl2[M-I=C(Me)N=S(Ph)C6H4SPh-o]] reveals the bond parameters within the metallacycle and shows an unusual close interaction of the sulfide sulfur atom with the platinum.
