Abstract
4,4′-Diaminobiphenyl reacts with 2,4-pentanedione in absolute ethanol in a molar ratio 1 : 2 to form mainly the product of [1 + 2] condensation, 4,4′-(biphenyl-4,4′-diyldinitrilo)dipentan-2-one (H2L). The Schiff base was used as tetradentate chelating ligand to coordinate CoII and NiII chlorides leading to complexes where the ratio of metal ligand was found to be 2 : 1 or 2 : 2. All the synthesized products were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, electronic, and mass spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and DSC. The electrochemical behaviour of the ligand and its complexes in DMF is also investigated.

Abstract
The synthesis of a thiourea substituted derivative of tris(pyridyl-2-methyl)amine (TPA) is reported. Two of the three pyridine rings are substituted in the 6-position with benzoylthiourea groups. These thiourea groups undergo intramolecular hydrogen bonding to form six-membered rings which leaves one N-H group available to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. This reports details how the complexation of this new ligand with transition metal ions yields complexes with differing geometries. Seven co-ordinate Mn(II) and Cd(II), six co-ordinate Ni(II) and five co-ordinate Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been isolated.

Abstract
Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes of the general type [M(N2O2)] are described. The N2O2 ligands used are [N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzylidene)propane-1,3-diamine] (HOMeSalpn) and [N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzylidene)propane-1,2-diamine (HOMeSalpr). These complexes have been characterized by IR, UV-vis, CV, TG-DTA and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of these complexes at a glassy carbon electrode in acetonitrile solution indicates that the first reduction process corresponding to Cu(II)-Cu(I) and Ni(II)-Ni(I) is electrochemically irreversible. The new copper complexes have been applied for the preparation of copper nanoparticles using non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) by thermal reduction. The copper nanoparticles with average size of 48nm were formed by thermal reduction of [N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzylidene)propane-1,3-diamine]copper(II) in the presence of triphenylphosphine thus releasing the reduced copper and affording the high-purity copper nanoparticles.

Abstract
Salicylaldehyde, 2-hydroxyacetophenone, and 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde react with 1,2-diaminoethane to give three symmetrical Schiff bases H2L1, H2L2, and H2L3, respectively. With Ru(III) ions, these ligands lead to three complexes: Ru(III)ClL1 (1), Ru(III)ClL2 (2), and Ru(III)ClL3 (3). The purity of these compounds was estimated by TLC technique and microanalysis while their structures were supported by the usual spectroscopic methods such as NMR, infrared, and electronic spectra. The cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile showed irreversible waves for all three ligands. Under the same experimental conditions, it was proved that the ruthenium is coordinated in the three complexes 1, 2, and 3 showing quasireversible redox systems. The behavior of these complexes and their comparison with cytochrome P450 are investigated using them as catalysts in the presence of molecular oxygen with an apical nitrogen base: 1- or 2-methylimidazole.

Abstract
A series of copper(II) complexes (CuL2x) with new N-di-methylphenyl-3,5-Bu2t-salicylaldimines (L(x)H) were prepared and characterized by IR, UV/vis, 1H NMR, ESR, cyclic voltammetry techniques and chemical oxidation. L(x)H ligands have been found selectively bind to a Cu(II), rather than to Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), VO(IV), Zn(II) and Cd(II). ESR examinations of the CuL2x complexes demonstrate that they exist in magnetically diluted mononuclear or coupled triplet-state structures in the solid. The temperature dependent (113-283 K) intensity of the powder ESR spectra for some CuL2x is characteristic of ferromagnetic coupling (J > 0). The reduction potentials of CuL2x in DMSO are sensitive to aniline moieties. Chemical oxidation of CuL2x with (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] in CHCl3 and MeCN solutions at 300 K affords gradually disappearance of their ESR signals and dramatic changes in the electronic spectra as well as the appearance of new maximum bands at 530-672 (CHCl3) and 670-700 nm (MeCN), suggesting generation of Cu(II)-phenoxyl radical species.

Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) and the electron-transfer characteristics between Cu(II) and 2,3-DHBA were studied in aqueous solutions using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The overall electrochemical oxidation process of 2,3-DHBA by Cu(II) may be classified as a chemical reaction involving one-electron oxidation of 2,3-DHBA to its semiquinone radical in solution, followed by an electron-transfer reaction involving the oxidation of the semiquinone radical to a quinone at the electrode surface. In the presence of H2O2, oxidation of 2,3-DHBA by Cu(II) is enhanced due to the regeneration of Cu(II) by H2O2 oxidizing Cu(I). The redox cycling between Cu(I)/Cu(II) and H2O2 also produces hydroxyl radicals (OH). Even though the presence of OH may not be detected at the surface of a glassy carbon electrode, production of electroactive dissolved oxygen (O2) suggests the presence of OH. The production of O2 is dependent on Cu(II):H2O2 concentration ratio. At the electrode surface and when the initial Cu(II):H2O2 is less than 1, O2 is produced, suggesting that H2O2 may act as a scavenger for OH; at initial Cu(II):H2O2 > 1, the production of O2 is not favored, and OH will be involved in the oxidation of Cu(I) and the organic ligand. The reaction mechanisms proposed in this study indicate that OH production by chelator-mediated Fenton reactions is favorable under conditions found in the wood cell wall.
