Abstract
Vanadium is a transition metal with important industrial, technological, biological, and biomedical applications widespread in the environment and in living beings. The different reactions that vanadium compounds (VCs) undergo in the presence of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and metabolites under mild physiological conditions are reviewed. In the environment vanadium is present naturally or through anthropogenic sources, the latter having an environmental impact caused by the dispersion of VCs in the atmosphere and aquifers. Vanadium has a versatile chemistry with interconvertible oxidation states, variable coordination number and geometry, and ability to form polyoxidovanadates with various nuclearity and structures. If a VC is added to a water-containing environment it can undergo hydrolysis, ligand-exchange, redox, and other types of changes, determined by the conditions and speciation chemistry of vanadium. Importantly, the solution is likely to differ from the VC introduced into the system and varies with concentration. Here, vanadium redox, hydrolytic and ligand-exchange chemical reactions, the influence of pH, concentration, salt, specific solutes, biomolecules, and VCs on the speciation are described. One of our goals with this work is highlight the need for assessment of the VC speciation, so that beneficial or toxic species might be identified and mechanisms of action be elucidated.

Abstract
Rare-earth (RE, Ln) carboxylates are widely studied as precursors of RE oxide-based nanomaterials; however, no systematic studies of RE L-lactates (HLact = 2-hydroxypropanoic acid) have been reported to date. In the present work, a profound structural investigation of RE L-lactates is carried out. A family of RE lactate complexes of the general formula LnLact3∙nH2O (Ln = La, Ce-Nd, Sm-Lu, Y; n = 2-3) are synthesized and characterized by CHN, TGA, and FTIR as well as by powder and single-crystal XRD methods. The existence of four novel structural types (1-Ln-4-Ln) is revealed. Compounds of the 1-Ln type (Ln = La, Ce, Pr) exhibit a chain polymeric structure, whereas 2-Ln-4-Ln compounds are molecular crystals consisting of dimeric (2-Ln; Ln = La, Ce-Nd) or monomeric (3-Ln-Ln = Sm-Lu, Y; 4-Ln-Ln = Sm-Gd, Y) species. The crystal structures of 1-Ln-4-Ln compounds are discussed in terms of their coordination geometry and supramolecular arrangement. Solutions of yttrium and lanthanum lactates with diethylenetriamine are applied for the chemical deposition of Y2O3 and La2O3 thin films.

Abstract
Vanadium-dependent haloperoxidases are a class of enzymes that catalyze oxidation reactions with halides to form halogenated organic products and water. These enzymes include chloroperoxidase and bromoperoxidase, which have very different protein sequences and sizes, but regardless the coordination environment of the active sites is surprisingly constant. In this manuscript, the comparison of the coordination chemistry of V-containing-haloperoxidases of the trigonal bipyramidal geometry was done by data mining. The catalytic cycle imposes changes in the coordination geometry of the vanadium to accommodate the peroxidovanadium(V) intermediate in an environment we describe as a distorted square pyramidal geometry. During the catalytic cycle, this intermediate converts to a trigonal bipyramidal intermediate before losing the halogen and forming a tetrahedral vanadium-protein intermediate. Importantly, the catalysis is facilitated by a proton-relay system supplied by the second sphere coordination environment and the changes in the coordination environment of the vanadium(V) making this process unique among protein catalyzed processes. The analysis of the coordination chemistry shows that the active site is very tightly regulated with only minor changes in the coordination geometry. The coordination geometry in the protein structures deviates from that found for both small molecules crystalized in the absence of protein and the reported functional small molecule model compounds. At this time there are no examples reported of a structurally similar small molecule with the geometry observed for the peroxidovanadium(V) in the active site of the vanadium-containing haloperoxidases.

Abstract
A mononuclear peroxovanadium(V) complex with histamine-N,N-diacetate (histada), K[VO(O(2))(histada)], and a dinuclear peroxovanadium(V) complex with 2-oxo-1,3-diaminopropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate (dpot), Cs(3)[(VO)(2)(O(2))(2)(dpot)], were prepared and characterized. The self-decomposition reaction was examined for these peroxovanadium(V) complexes as well as for K[VO(O(2))(cmhist)] (cmhist = N-carboxymethylhistidinate). The reaction profiles depicted by the absorbance change in the UV-vis spectrum show a sigmoid shape with an induction period. The induction period is reduced by the addition of acid, fluoride, thiocyanate, VO(2+), VO(2)(+), and trolox compared to the solution containing perchlorate. On the other hand, the induction period was elongated by the addition of chloride, bromide, and 2-tert-butyl-p-cresol. These behaviors are discussed on the basis of a radical chain mechanism. The self-decomposition reactions have also been followed by the (1)H and (51)V NMR and EPR spectra. These spectral studies as well as the UV-vis spectral study indicate that vanadium(V) is partly reduced to vanadium(IV) in the self-decomposition process. The histada complex yields a mixed-valence dinuclear complex in a concentrated solution, and the dpot complex yields a mixed-valence tetranuclear complex. The reduction of vanadium ion suggests that the peroxo ligand may act as a reducing agent. In order to know the fate of the peroxo ligand, we tried to detect superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical, which were anticipated to be produced in the self-decomposition process. The formation of superoxide anion was spectrophotometrically confirmed using two independent methods, including the reduction of cytochrome c and the reduction of sodium 4-[3-(iodophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-2H-5-tetrazolio]-1,3-benzene disulfonate (WST-1). The formation of hydroxyl radical was confirmed by an EPR spin trapping technique. The oxidizing abilities of the peroxovanadium(V) complexes toward bovine serum albumin (BSA) were also evaluated. In the protein carbonyl assay, it was found that the total amount of protein carbonyl in BSA was increased by the reaction with the peroxovanadium complexes in the concentration-dependent manner. In addition, the oxidation of sulfhydryl group in BSA induced by the peroxovanadium complexes was confirmed.

Abstract
The complexes, [VO(O(2))(pa)(2)]ClO(4).3H(2)O (1), [VO(O(2))(pa)(2)][VO(O(2))(2)(pa)].3H(2)O (2), [VO(O(2))(pa)(2)][VO(O(2))(ada)].2H(2)O (3) and [VO(O(2))(pa)(pca)].H(2)O (4)[pa = picolinamide, ada = carbamoylmethyliminodiacetate(2-) and pca = 2-pyrazinecarboxylate(1-)], were synthesized. 2 and 3 are new types of peroxovanadium complexes: monoperoxovanadium diperoxovanadate (2) and monoperoxovanadium monoperoxovanadate (3). The complexes were characterized by chemical analysis and IR spectroscopy, and 1, 3 and 4 also by X-ray analysis. The structure of 1 is disordered, with alternating positions of the oxo and peroxo ligands. The peroxo oxygen atoms, O(p), in 1 are involved in weak hydrogen bonds with water molecules and close intramolecular C-HO...(p) bonds [d(HO(p)) approximately 2.0 A]. The supramolecular structure of 1 is formed by a network of hydrogen bonds and strong attractive intermolecular pi-pi interactions between the pyridine rings. The supramolecular architecture in 4 is constructed by (N,O)-H...O hydrogen bonds between the neutral complex molecules and water of crystallization. The peroxo oxygen atoms in 4 form intramolecular C-H...O(p) bonds [d(H...O(p))= 2.303 A]. The pa and pca ligands are ON coordinated via the oxygen atoms of the C(NH(2))=O and COO(-) groups, respectively, and nitrogen atoms of the heterocyclic rings, and ada as a tetradentate O(3)N ligand. The thermal analysis of 4 showed that the loss of water of crystallization and the active oxygen release (T(min)/ degrees C 82, T(max)/degrees C 165) are, under given conditions, individual processes separated by the temperature interval 90-132 degrees C. The solution structures and stability were studied by UV-VIS and (51)V NMR spectroscopies.

Abstract
Reaction of sodium or potassium molybdate and excess malic acid in a wide range of pH values (pH 4.0-7.0) resulted in the isolation of two cis-dioxo-bis(malato)-Mo(VI) complexes, viz. Na(3)[MoO(2)H(S-mal)(2)] and K(3)[MoO(2)H(S-mal)(2)].H(2)O (H(3)mal=malic acid). The sodium complex is also characterized by an X-ray structure analysis, showing that the mononuclear Mo units are linked together via very strong symmetric CO(2)...H... O(2)C-hydrogen bond [2.432(5) A], forming a polymeric chain. The molybdenum atoms are quasi-octahedrally coordinated by two cis-oxo groups and two bidentate malate ligands via its alkoxy and alpha-carboxyl groups, while the beta-carboxylic and carboxylate groups remain uncomplexed, as the coordination of vicinal carboxylate and alkoxide of homocitrate in FeMo cofactor of nitrogenase. The absolute configuration of the metal center in this S-malato complex is assigned as Lambda and the homochirality within the chain is established as a homochiral form ...Lambda(S)-Lambda(S)-Lambda(S)-Lambda(S)... . It is proposed that the chiral configuration of the metal center in wild-type FeMo-co biosynthesis might be induced by the early coordination of the chiral R-homocitric acid, while a mixture of raceme might be obtained in the biosynthesis of NifV(-) FeMo-cofactor. The absolute configuration of wild-type FeMo-cofactor is assigned as Delta(R).
