Abstract
Dandruff is a common scalp disorder with multiple microbial and host-related factors contributing to its aetiology, including alterations in scalp sebum. Despite existing evidence that the yeast Malassezia restricta plays a key role in the onset of dandruff, the interplay of these factors is poorly understood. Recently, squalene monohydroperoxide and malondialdehyde were established as biomarkers of dandruff-afflicted scalp, highlighting the role of sebum lipoperoxidation in the triggering and maintenance of dandruff, although its mechanism of action is unknown. The current study provides evidence that M. restricta mediates sebum peroxidation, leading to production of squalene monohydroperoxide and malondialdehyde. Furthermore, in vitro data show that these lipoperoxidation products act on epidermal cells and alter the skin barrier. These results support the role of Malassezia restricta-induced lipoperoxides as triggers of dandruff, which suggests that blocking their production could be a novel anti-dandruff treatment approach.

Abstract
A dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method (DLLME) combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the extraction and determination of some aldehydes, such as benzaldehyde (BzA), butyraldehyde (BuA) and furfural (Fur) in mainstream cigarette smoke as well as BzA in injectable formulations. After trapping of combustion smoke into sulfuric acid with a laboratory-made smoking machine, aldehydes were converted into their hydrazone derivatives by the reaction with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH), and then rapidly extracted by DLLME. The effects of various experimental parameters on the derivatization and extraction were studied and optimized. Under the optimum extraction conditions, linear calibration curves in the range 0.025 to 1.0 μg/mL with correlation coefficients of 0.9980-0.9996 were obtained for studied aldehydes. Limit of detections (LODs) for BzA, BuA and Fur were found to be 14.2, 21.3 and 7.92 μg/L, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for inter-and intra-day assays were lower than 8.50%. Average recoveries for spiked samples were in the range 88.0-109%. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of aldehydes in different real samples.

Abstract
A new microwave-accelerated derivatization method was developed for rapid determination of 13 natural sex hormones in feeds. Sex hormones were isolated from the sample matrix by ultrasonic extraction, followed by solid-phase extraction, derivatized under microwave irradiation, and then analyzed directly by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The key parameters affecting derivatization efficiency, including microwave irradiation time, microwave power, and reaction solvent were studied. Under microwave power of 360 W and microwave irradiation for 3 min, 13 natural sex hormones were simultaneously derivatized using heptafluorobutyric acid anhydride (HFBA) as derivatization reagent. This method was applied to the determination of 13 natural sex hormones in different feed samples, and the obtained results were compared with those obtained by the traditional thermal derivatization. The recoveries from 58.1 to 111% were obtained at sex hormone concentrations of 10-300 μg/kg with RSDs ≤12.0%. The results showed that the proposed method was fast, simple, efficient and can be applied to the determination of 13 natural sex hormones in different feed samples.

Abstract
Gas chromatography/electron capture negative ion chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (GC/ECNICI-MS) combined with pentafluorobenzoyl derivatization (PFBoyl) is frequently used for the sensitive detection of fatty alcohols (FOH). However, this derivatization technique suffers from a lack of established reaction protocols, time-consuming reactions, and the presence of reagent artifacts or unwanted derivatization by-products which can hinder analyte detection. Here, strategies are presented to reduce the problems associated with PFBoyl-derivatization, including (1) the optimization of reaction conditions (derivatization time and temperature) for a variety of PFBoyl-derivatized FOH, (2) an investigation of microwave-accelerated derivatization (MAD) as a rapid alternative heating mechanism for the PFBoyl-derivatization of FOH, and (3) an analysis of an alternative strategy employing a solvent extraction procedure post-derivatization to reduce the detrimental effects commonly associated with PFBoyl derivatization reagents. The optimal reaction conditions for the PFBoyl-derivatization of FOH were determined to be 60°C for 45 min. The investigation in MAD demonstrated the potential of obtaining comparable PFBoyl-derivatizations to those obtained using traditional heating methods, albeit in a reaction time of 3 min. An examination of several solvents for post-derivatization extraction revealed improved relative response factors in comparison to those obtained without solvent extraction. The best solvents for the PFBoyl-FOH extraction, dichloromethane and tert-butyl methyl ether, were also compared to the no solvent extraction samples with standard response curves and PFBoyl-derivatized FOH in Bligh-Dyer extracted rat plasma.

Abstract
In this review, published applications of microwave-assisted derivatization procedures for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) are summarized. Among the broad range of analytical techniques available, GC/MS is still the method of choice for most high-throughput screening procedures in forensic/clinical toxicology, doping control and food and environmental analysis. Despite the many advantages of the GC/MS method, time-consuming derivatization steps are often required in order to obtain desirable chromatographic characteristics or to improve the stability and detectability of the target analytes. These derivatization processes typically require reaction times from 30 min up to several hours at elevated temperature. In contrast, microwave protocols have demonstrated to be able to reduce the time required for derivatization to a few minutes, and can thus very effectively shorten the overall analysis time, in particular when carried out in a high-throughput format. Herein, the literature in this field is summarized and recent experimental techniques for performing parallel GC/MS derivatization protocols are discussed.

Abstract
Ergosterol is one of the important precursors of tumorigenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. To the best of our knowledge, a large amount of ergosterol is present in moldy cigarettes, which derives from fungal contaminations. Thus, the development of a simple, fast, and efficient method for the analysis of ergosterol is in great demand. In this paper, GC/MS following microwave-assisted silylation (MAS) was developed for the rapid quantitative analysis of ergosterol in cigarettes for the first time. In our work, total ergosterol in cigarettes after NaOH saponification was extracted with hexane, and then was fast derivatized with bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) under microwave irradiation. Finally, the ergosterol trimethylsilyl derivative was analyzed by GC/MS. Derivatization conditions including microwave reaction solvent, irradiation time, and power were investigated. Method validations (linear range, LOD, precision, and recovery) were also studied. The results showed that the proposed method provided a fast, simple, and sensitive approach for the determination of ergosterol in cigarettes. Finally it was successfully applied to the analysis of ergosterol in normal and mildewy cigarettes.

Abstract
A robust capillary electrophoretic method has been established to separate aminosaccharides including glucosamine, galactosamine, N-methyl-glucamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine and amino glucuronic acid. All the aminosaccharides were dansylated fast under microwave irradiation at 385 W for 6 min (about 50-fold faster than common methods) and detected via on-line UV adsorption at 214 nm. Baseline separation of the dansylatied products was achieved in 20 min using a running buffer of 320 mM borate at pH 9.50. Quantitation of glucosamine in osteoarthritis tablets was then conducted. A linear working range was found in between 2.00 microg/mL and 1.80 mg/mL with linear regression coefficient of 0.9964. The limit of detection reached 1.00 microg/mL glucosamine (signal-to-noise, S/N=3). Recoveries were determined by spiking a known amount of glucosamine in tablet-extracted solutions, giving a range of 88.0-99.7%. The run-to-run relative standard deviation was 0.24% (n=5) for migration time and 2.72% for peak area.

Abstract
This work presents a thorough study of some aspects critical to the quantitative performance of methods for the determination of volatile aldehydes previously derivatized to pentafluorobenzyl hydroxylamine oximes. The conclusions of the study are further applied to the validation of an optimized procedure for the determination of oxidation-related aldehydes from wine. Aspects studied include the chromatographic injection, the analytical performance of electron-capture detection (ECD) or MS detection, and the way in which the derivatization is carried out. Different injection techniques have been optimized and compared (classical splitless-hot injection; cold splitless; and large volume solvent split injection). All of them were carried out in a programmed temperature vaporization (PTV) injector, with a 350 microL internal volume liner (3.4 mm internal diameter). Classical splitless injection of hexane extracts is troublesome and requires large carrier gas flows (>10 mL min(-1)). Cold splitless injection was clearly superior. Large volume solvent split injection has been also optimized. ECD has been found to lack the necessary selectivity for the determination of unsaturated aldehydes in wine, although the quantitation of several minor aldehydes is possible. MS detection has proven to be superior for the determination of these compounds in wine. The way in which the reagent is applied is also critical and for the case of wine is important to ensure that the reagent is applied after some of the major wine aldehydes have been eliminated. The finally proposed method is extremely sensitive. Method detection limits ranged from 0.002 microg L(-1) (for unsaturated aldehydes) to 0.73 microg L(-1) (for phenylacetaldehyde) and precision (measured as relative standard deviation) is < or =6% in all cases. The method makes it possible to determine quantitatively in a single run the wine aldehydes with sensory significance (isobutyraldehyde, 2-methylbutanal, isovaleraldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-heptenal, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, methional and phenylacetaldehyde).

Abstract
Analysis of amino acids in blood samples is an important tool for the diagnosis of neonatal amino acid metabolism disorders. In the work, a novel, rapid and sensitive method was developed for the determination of amino acids in neonatal blood samples, which was based on microwave-assisted silylation followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The amino acids were derivatized with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) under microwave irradiation. The controlled reaction was carried out employing BSTFA under conventional heating at 120 degrees C for 30 min. Experimental results show that microwave irradiation can accelerate the derivatization reaction of amino acids with BSFTA, and much shorten analysis time. The method validations (linear range, detection limit, precision and recovery) were studied. Finally, the method was tested by determination of amino acids in neonatal blood by the measurement of their trimethylsilyl derivatives by GC/MS in electron impact (EI) mode. Two biomarkers of L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine in phenylketonuria (PKU)-positive blood and control blood were quantitatively analyzed by the proposed method. The results demonstrated that microwave-assisted silylation followed by GC/MS is a rapid, simple and sensitive method for amino acid analysis and is also a potential tool for fast screening of neonatal aminoacidurias.

Abstract
17alpha-Hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) is considered to be the biomarker of congential adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Screening for CAH in newborns by measuring levels of the biomarker of 17OHP has become routine. In the work, a rapid, simple and sensitive technique was developed for the diagnosis of neonatal CAH by the quantitative analysis of 17OHP in neonatal blood spots. The technique was based on microwave-assisted silylation (MAS) followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In the method, fast derivatization of 17OHP with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide was performed by using microwave irradiation, and the trimethylsilyl derivative thus formed was analyzed by GC/MS. The results of the experiment indicate that MAS followed by GC/MS analysis is a rapid, simple and sensitive method for the determination of 17OHP in blood samples. The proposed technique has been shown to have potential as a powerful tool for the rapid diagnosis of neonatal CAH.

Abstract
A method was developed for the determination of C1-C6 carbonyl compounds in alcoholic solutions using pentafluorobenzoxymation followed by headspace sampling solid-phase microextraction and subsequent analysis by GC with electron-capture detection. Experimental conditions-alcohol content, exposure time, temperature and sample agitation were optimised. In this method, a spirit or distilled alcoholic beverage is first adjusted to 20% (v/v) alcohol. Detection limits for particular aldehydes and ketone varied from 0.05 to 0.5 microg/l and relative standard deviation was between 2.3 and 20%. Generally, the method showed good linearity for the tested concentration range 8 microg/l-0.32 mg/l with regression coefficients ranging between 0.9434 and 0.9983. The method was applied to the analysis of real alcoholic beverages (vodkas).
