Abstract
The use of organized supramolecular systems-including micellar media and cyclodextrin inclusion complexes-combined with luminescence techniques in the study and determination of compounds and elements of environmental interest from 1990 to 2005 is reviewed. Analyses of environmental samples performed using fluorescence, photochemically induced fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy as well as liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and flow injection with luminescence detection in the presence of these organized media are described in detail.

Abstract
This work reports the analysis of selected aldehydes in air samples using capillary electrophoresis (CE). The method is based on the reaction of aldehydes with 4-hydrazinobenzoic acid (HBA) to give the corresponding hydrazones with maximum absorbance at 290 nm. Under optimized CE conditions, the HBA derivatives of four carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and acrolein) were completely separated from one another, in less than 6 min, using a pH 9.3 tetraborate buffer at 0.040 mol L(-1) concentration as background electrolyte. A few method validation parameters were determined revealing good migration time repeatability (< 1.5% CV) and area repeatability (< 2% CV), excellent linearity (50-300 microg/L, r > 0.996) and adequate sensitivity for environmental applications. The limits of detection with respect to each single aldehyde were in the range of 2.7-8.8 ng L(-1). The methodology was applied to the determination of aldehydes indoors. Samples were collected in HBA impregnated octadecylsilica cartridges, at different times during the day. The most abundant carbonyls in the samples were acetaldehyde followed by formaldehyde, with estimated peak concentrations of 4.3 and 2.9 ppbv, respectively.

Abstract
A preconcentration study based on the cloud point phenomenon was carried out for a set of triazine herbicides, three of them chloro-substituted and three of them methylthio-substituted. Concentration factors and recoveries were calculated as function of the percentage of the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114 employed. From these values, obtained from a cloud point extraction (CPE) procedure, the distribution coefficient between the Triton X-114 micelles and water, Kc, prior to CPE was calculated for each triazine and related to the corresponding octanol-water partition coefficient, Kow. In order to confirm the results obtained with the triazine herbicides, two sets of data from chemically different organic pollutants--organophosporous and chlorophenols--obtained from the literature were assessed, concluding that they display a similar behaviour to that of the triazine herbicides. This can be used to predict the CPE behaviour of other organic pollutants from their octanol-water partition coefficients. The Kc values were compared with the analyte concentration ratio in the surfactant-rich phase and aqueous phase (Ksa) with a view to obtaining a link between the analyte behaviour prior to and after cloud point extraction procedures.

Abstract
The growing awareness of the strong development of the toxicity of heavy metals upon their chemical forms has led to an increasing interest in the qualitative and quantitative determination of specific metal species. Speciation has therefore become an important topic of present-day analytical research. The development in the elemental speciation analysis by capillary electrophoresis (CE) is reviewed. Various CE separation modes and detection techniques applied are discussed. A comprehensive description of reported methods to date in CE speciation analysis including metals, metalloids and nonmetallic elements is demonstrated. Some examples are presented to demonstrate CE's ability to solve real-world speciation analysis with emphasis on the applications in biological and environmental samples. Further, some issues concerning the limitations and the future of CE with regard to speciation studies are also discussed.

Abstract
Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was investigated as a technique for the separation and analysis of the following related glycopeptide antibiotics: alpha-avoparcin, beta-avoparcin, ristocetin A, ristocetin B and vancomycin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles were employed as the pseudostationary phase in conjunction with borate or CHES buffers at pH 9.2. A complete separation of the glycopeptides was achieved only when two separation mechanisms were employed simultaneously: (i) differential partitioning of the glycopeptides into SDS micelles; and (ii) differential complexation of the glycopeptides with the borate anion from the borate buffer. Quantitatively, linearity was confirmed for each antibiotic from 0.5 to 40 ppm, with correlation coefficients (r(2)) ranging from 0.9996 (vancomycin and beta-avoparcin) to 0.9986 (alpha-avoparcin). Detection limits ranging from 0.01 ppm (vancomycin) to 0.2 ppm (avoparcin) were achieved, and the mean recovery of avoparcin at the 10 ppm level was 99.2%.

Abstract
This article reviews the status of solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE). It focuses on some of the organic pollutants which have captured the interest of analytical chemists--phenols, surfactants, dyes, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic and aliphatic amines, aromatic acids and aromatic sulfonic acids--and, in particular, on monitoring pesticides from different sources. It shows that the coupling of SPE to CE has considerable potential in the analysis of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
A comprehensive review is presented of the state-of-the-art of capillary electrophoresis for application to the analysis of inorganic species, mainly ions, in environmental samples. This brief review covers the developments principally in sensitivity and matrix interference for the determination of inorganic ions in the following samples: drinking, mineral, surface, and ground waters, rainwater, snow, seawater, brine and waste waters, aerosol, and others. References published mainly from 1995 to 1997 were summarized in this review.

Abstract
The use of capillary electrophoresis for the determination of inorganic species in environmental samples is reviewed. Topics covered include the separation of inorganic anions, inorganic cations, transition metal cations and organometals in different environmental matrices, such as atmospheric deposition, atmospheric aerosols, gases, natural waters, waste waters, soil, sediment and marine biological samples. Cited literature is gathered according to the type of matrix, so that the focus is on the discussion of matrix effects rather than on the method development for a single class of compounds. For each matrix, surveyed methods are tabulated in order to assist the method selection. Innovative applications of capillary electrophoresis to advanced environmental research are also emphasised.
