Spacer-bridged ladder compounds—syntheses, structures and synthetic applications

Molecular Cage Assembly by Sn-O-Sn Bridging of Di-, Tri- and Tetranuclear Organotin Tectons: Extending the Spacing in Double Ladder Structures

Hydrolysis reactions of di- and trinuclear organotin halides yielded large novel cage compounds containing Sn-O-Sn bridges. The molecular structures of two octanuclear tetraorganodistannoxanes showing double-ladder motifs, viz., [{Me3 SiCH2 (Cl)SnCH2 YCH2 Sn(OH)CH2 SiMe3 }2 (μ-O)2 ]2 [1, Y=p-(Me)2 SiC6 H4 -C6 H4 Si(Me)2 ] and [{Me3 SiCH2 (I)SnCH2 YCH2 Sn(OH)CH2 SiMe3 }2 (μ-O)2 ]2 ⋅0.48 I2 [2⋅0.48 I2 , Y=p-(Me)2 SiC6 H4 -C6 H4 Si(Me)2 ], and the hexanuclear cage-compound 1,3,6-C6 H3 (p-C6 H4 Si(Me)2 CH2 Sn(R)2 OSn(R)2 CH2 Si(Me)2 C6 H4 -p)3 C6 H3 -1,3,6 (3, R=CH2 SiMe3 ) are reported. Of these, the co-crystal 2⋅0.48 I2 exhibits the largest spacing of 16.7 Å reported to date for distannoxane-based double ladders. DFT calculations for the hexanuclear cage and a related octanuclear congener accompany the experimental work.

MeSi(CH2 SnRO)3 (R=Ph, Me3 SiCH2 ): Building Blocks for Triangular-Shaped Diorganotin Oxide Macrocycles

The syntheses of the novel silicon-bridged tris(tetraorganotin) compounds MeSi(CH2 SnPh2 R)3 (2, R=Ph; 5, R=Me3 SiCH2 ) and their halogen-substituted derivatives MeSi(CH2 SnPh(3-n) In )3 (3, n=1; 4, n=2) and MeSi(CH2 SnI2 R)3 (6, R=Me3 SiCH2 ) are reported. The reaction of compound 4 with di-t-butyltin oxide (t-Bu2 SnO)3 gives the oktokaideka-nuclear (18-nuclear) molecular diorganotin oxide [MeSi(CH2 SnPhO)3 ]6 (7) while the reaction of 6 with sodium hydroxide, NaOH, provides the trikonta-nuclear (30-nuclear) molecular diorganotin oxide [MeSi(CH2 SnRO)3 ]10 (8, R=Me3 SiCH2 ). Both 7 and 8 show belt-like ladder-type macrocyclic structures and are by far the biggest molecular diorganotin oxides reported to date. The compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), NMR spectroscopy, 1 H DOSY NMR spectroscopy (7), IR spectroscopy (7, 8), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (2, 7, 8).

Difunctional distannoxanes, XR2SnOSnR2X

The difunctional distannoxanes, XR2SnOSnR2X, can be prepared by a number of different routes, and frequently turn up unexpectedly in reactions involving organotin compounds. They show a variety of (usually dimeric) structures, and are mild but effective catalysts for a variety of polar organic reactions. This article gives an overview of their chemistry.

Organotin-oxido cluster-based multiferrocenyl complexes obtained by hydrolysis of ferrocenyl-functionalized organotin chlorides

Three organotin-oxido clusters were formed by hydrolysis of ferrocenyl-functionalized organotin chloride precursors in the presence of NaEPh (E=S, Se). [R(Fc) SnCl3 ⋅HCl] (C; R(Fc) = CMe2 CH2 C(Me)=N-N=C(Me)Fc) and [SnCl6 ](2-) formed {(R(Fc) SnCl2 )3 [Sn(OH)6 ]}[SnCl3 ] (3 a) and {(R(Fc) SnCl2 )3 [Sn(OH)6 ]}[PhSeO3 ] (3 b), bearing an unprecedented [Sn4 O6 ] unit, in a one-pot synthesis or stepwise through [(R(Fc) SnCl2 )2 Se] (1) plus [(R(Fc) SnCl2 )SePh] (2). A one-pot reaction starting out from FcSnCl3 gave [(FcSn)9 (OH)6 O8 Cl5 ] (4), which represents the largest Fc-decorated Sn/O cluster reported to date.

Self-assembly of dialkyltin(IV) moieties and aromatic dicarboxylates to complexes with a polymeric or a discrete trinuclear macrocyclic structure in the solid state and a mixture of fast interchanging cyclooligomeric structures in solution

It is well-known that the structures of trialkyltin(IV) carboxylates can be either monomeric, polymeric, or cyclooligomeric in the solid state. In contrast, all dialkyltin(IV) dicarboxylates characterized so far in the solid state have monomeric or polymeric structures, however, for some cases it has been proposed that their solution-state structure is cyclooligomeric. In order to generate more information on this subject, dimethyl- and di-n-butyltin(IV) complexes with phthalic and isophthalic acid have been prepared and analyzed both in solution and in the solid state. The solid-state structures of the two dialkyltin(IV) phthalates examined herein contain polymeric molecular chains, however, with supramolecular Sn.O' interactions, which result in the generation of cyclooligomeric units. This provides evidence for the presence of discrete cyclooligomeric structures in solution, which are involved in fast dynamic exchange equilibria as evidenced by (1)H, (13)C, and (119)Sn NMR spectroscopy. In the case of the two dialkyltin(IV) isophthalate complexes studied herein (R = Me, n-Bu), only the di-n-butyltin derivative is soluble and NMR spectroscopy as well as FAB(+) spectrometry indicates the formation of cyclic dinuclear, trinuclear, and/or tetranuclear species in solution, which may be involved also in fast dynamic exchange equilibria. In the solid state, however, discrete cyclotrinuclear units can be identified, in which the 24-membered macrocyclic cavity is almost completely planar, having six oxygen atoms directed into its interior and six Sn-n-butyl groups approximately perpendicular to the molecular plane. The diameter of the cyclic cavity can be described by the transannular O.O distances that vary from 7.68 to 7.84 A, being large enough for the introduction of linear alkyl groups. This can be demonstrated by the supramolecular structure of this compound, which contains a new type of bis[2]pseudorotaxane formed between two molecules through mutual threading via two of the Sn-butyl groups. Such a supramolecular entity has been unknown so far, since the usual composition of bis[2]pseudorotaxanes is the trimolecular combination of a macrocyclic ring system with two threads.
