Study of monoprotic acid-base equilibria in aqueous micellar solutions of nonionic surfactants using spectrophotometry and chemometrics

Many studies have shown the distribution of solutes between aqueous phase and micellar pseudo-phase in aqueous micellar solutions. However, spectrophotometric studies of acid-base equilibria in these media do not confirm such distribution because of the collinearity between concentrations of chemical species in the two phases. The collinearity causes the number of detected species to be equal to the number of species in a homogenous solution that automatically misinterpreted as homogeneity of micellar solutions, therefore the collinearity is often neglected. This interpretation is in contradiction to the distribution theory in micellar media that must be avoided. Acid-base equilibrium of an indicator was studied in aqueous micellar solutions of a nonionic surfactant to address the collinearity using UV/Visible spectrophotometry. Simultaneous analysis (matrix augmentation) of the equilibrium and solvation data was applied to eliminate the collinearity from the equilibrium data. A model was then suggested for the equilibrium that was fitted to the augmented data to estimate distribution coefficients of the species between the two phases. Moreover, complete resolution of concentration and spectral profiles of species in each phase was achieved.

Model-based analysis of coupled equilibrium-kinetic processes: indirect kinetic studies of thermodynamic parameters using the dynamic data

Thermodynamic studies of equilibrium chemical reactions linked with kinetic procedures are mostly impossible by traditional approaches. In this work, the new concept of generalized kinetic study of thermodynamic parameters is introduced for dynamic data. The examples of equilibria intertwined with kinetic chemical mechanisms include molecular charge transfer complex formation reactions, pH-dependent degradation of chemical compounds and tautomerization kinetics in micellar solutions. Model-based global analysis with the possibility of calculating and embedding the equilibrium and kinetic parameters into the fitting algorithm has allowed the complete analysis of the complex reaction mechanisms. After the fitting process, the optimal equilibrium and kinetic parameters together with an estimate of their standard deviations have been obtained. This work opens up a promising new avenue for obtaining equilibrium constants through the kinetic data analysis for the kinetic reactions that involve equilibrium processes.

Soil humic acids may favour the persistence of hexavalent chromium in soil

The interaction between hexavalent chromium Cr(VI), as K(2)CrO(4), and standard humic acids (HAs) in bulk solution was studied using three complementary analytical methods: UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and differential pulse stripping voltammetry. The observed UV-Vis and X-ray absorption spectra showed that, under our experimental conditions, HAs did not induce reduction of Cr(VI) to its trivalent chemical form. The interaction between Cr(VI) and HAs has rather led to the formation of Cr(VI)-HAs micelles via supramolecular chemical processes. The reported results could contribute towards explaining the relative persistence of ecotoxic hexavalent chromium in soils.

Tautomerization equilibria in aqueous micellar solutions: a spectrophotometric and factor-analytical study

The keto-enol equilibria of benzoylacetone (BZA) as a model for 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds are studied in aqueous acid and cationic micellar solution. Evolving factor analysis (EFA), multivariate curve resolution-alternating least-squares (MCR-ALS), and rank annihilation factor analysis (RAFA) are used for complete resolving of measured spectrophotometric data. The acidity constants of the enolic, KaE, and ketonic, KaK, forms of BZA and also the tautomerization constant, Kt, and its related thermodynamic parameters have been determined by using EFA and MCR-ALS methods and spectral variation of BZA solutions in various pHs and temperatures. The concentration and spectral profiles of all species were calculated without any assumption about chemical models. The spectral variation of BZA solutions as a function of cationic micelle concentration sufficiently beyond its critical micelle concentration is analyzed according to the partition model for distribution between water and micellar pseudo-phase and RAFA. The outputs of using RAFA on measured rank deficient data are the spectrum of enolic form in the micellar pseudo-phase, free from contribution of the enolic form in the aqueous phase, the partition coefficient of enolic form, KdE, between the micelle and water phases, and the tautomerization constant in the micellar pseudo-phase, Ktm.

A Facile Spectrophotometric Method for Cobalt Determination Using .ALPHA.-Benzilmonoxime in Sodium Dodecylsulfate Micellar Solutions

Alpha-benzilmonoxime in sodium dodecylsulfate micellar media has been used for the spectrophotometric determination of cobalt at pH 9.0. The linear range of calibration is 0.05-1.50 microg cm(-3) of cobalt at 380 nm with molar absorptivity of 3.72 x 10(4) dm3 mol(-1) cm(-1), which is about 1.5-times greater than that of the alpha-benzilmonoxime extraction based method. The relative standard deviations, recoveries, detection limit and effects of diverse ions on the determination of cobalt were studied. These analytical results were satisfactory. The method was successfully applied to the determination of cobalt in the various samples.
