Abstract
This study investigated changes in the interfacial properties of epoxy-coated concrete exposed to various conditions, regarding the epoxy type, coating equipment, and exposure environment and period. The measured coating thickness and pull-off bond strength exhibited diverse trends, depending on the exposure period and conditions. In the real sea (RS) environment, the average bond strengths for bisphenol A (BPA) (E1), BPA with zinc powder (E2), and BPA with cresyl glycidyl ether (E3) were 1.26, 1.93, and 1.92 MPa, respectively. The coating method did not significantly affect the measured coating thickness and strength values. The conventional roller (D1) exhibited the highest thickness variation, with a value of 214.45 μm. The RS condition significantly increased the coating thickness (34% to 158%) compared to the tap water (TW) condition. The exposure conditions had little impact on bond strength except for E3, which showed an increased strength (2.71 MPa) over 7-91 days, especially under RS conditions, while E2 remained constant at approximately 1.82 MPa. This study offers insights into factors influencing marine concrete coating performance and discusses limitations and future work.

Abstract
New inorganic nanostructured matrices for fiber-reinforced composites with enhanced high-temperature stability were developed from alkali aluminosilicate polymers doped with different ultra-high-temperature ceramic (UHTC) particles. The alkali aluminosilicate matrices were synthesized at room temperature with a high SiO2:Al2O3 ratio and then further functionalized by doping with 4-5 wt % of micrometric SiC, ZrB2, ZrC, and HfC powders and finally thermally stabilized as glass-ceramics at 750 °C. The different UHTC-doped matrices were characterized according to their dimensional and microstructural changes after thermal cycling in air flux at 1000 °C. The first results showed that carbide-based UHTC powders improved the thermal stability of the matrices, preventing the excessive swelling of the material and the formation of detrimental voids that might result in the lack of adhesion with reinforcing fibers. Contrarily, the addition of ZrB2 resulted in an excessive matrix swelling at high temperature, thus proving no efficacy compared to the undoped matrix. Impregnation tests carried out on C-fiber fabrics showed good processability, adhesion to the fibers, and fracture pull-out, especially for carbide-based matrices.

Abstract
As an important thermosetting material, flame-retardant epoxy resin has various applications in the aerospace, chemical, and electronics industry, and other fields. However, the flame retardancy of epoxy resins is often improved at the expense of mechanical performance. The contradiction between flame retardancy and mechanical properties seriously impedes the practical applications of epoxy resin (EP). Herein, iron-loaded polydopamine functionalized montmorillonite (D-Mt-Fe3+), which was prepared by dopamine, iron chloride and montmorillonite in an aqueous solution, was introduced to prepare iron-loaded polydopamine functionalized montmorillonite/epoxy resin composites (D-Mt-Fe3+/EP). As expected, D-Mt-Fe3+/EP-10 with 10 phr of D-Mt-Fe3+ passed the UL-94 V-0 rating, achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31.0% and reduced the smoke production rate (SPR) and total smoke production (TSP), indicating that the introduction of D-Mt-Fe3+ could endow EP with satisfactory flame retardancy through the radical scavenging function of dopamine in the gas phase and the catalytic charring effect of iron ions, respectively. Encouragingly, the mechanical property was also enhanced with the flexural strength increased by 25.5%. This work provided an attractive strategy for improving both the mechanical properties and fire resistance of EP, which greatly broadened their applications in the chemical industry and electronics field, etc.

Abstract
Corn straw/epoxy resin composites (CS/ECs) and maleic anhydride acetylated CS/ECs (MA-CS/ECs) were prepared through dry mixing and high-temperature curing. Corn straw is a kind of abundant, eco-friendly, and low-cost biomass material. Unmodified and modified corn straws were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interfacial affinity of the composite was testified by the contact angle. The results of XPS and SEM demonstrated that maleic anhydride had been successfully bonded onto the structure of corn straw. Corn straw particle-reinforced epoxy resin composites were prepared using a casting and molding process. Results showed that the MA-CS/EC had better impact and flexural resistance than the unmodified corn straw/epoxy resin composites when the corn straw addition was 15 wt %. The result of the contact angle showed that the interfacial compatibility between composites is also stronger than that of CS/EC.

Abstract
Polyepoxyphenylsilsesquioxane (PEPSQ) and diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl) aminomethylphosphonate (DBAMP) can improve the flame retardancy of epoxy resin (EP). In this paper, the results of the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL94 tests exhibited that PEPSQ and DBAMP had good synergistic flame retardancy. The non-isothermal degradation kinetics of EP containing PEPSQ and DBAMP was investigated by the Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The results of the Kissinger method displayed that the addition of two flame retardants, PEPSQ and DBAMP, can slightly enhance the activation energy of EP, indicating that the additives delayed the thermal degradation of EP. The Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method further confirmed that the activation energy of EP during the whole thermal degradation process can be significantly increased by addition of the two flame retardants PEPSQ and DBAMP. When the degree of conversion exceeded 80%, the increase was more significant. This illustrated that the flame retardants finally achieved the purpose of improving the flame retardancy of EP by stabilizing the char layer.

Abstract
Epoxy resin (EPs) has been widely used in many fields in recent years, such as electronics, adhesives, coatings, and so on, which mainly benefiting from its excellent mechanical and chemical properties, low price and easy preparation. However, conventional EPs tend to be flammable, which significantly prevents their applications especially in high flame-resistance required areas. In this work, we introduce nitrile groups and the benzoxazine ring into the flame-retardant, followed by a simple heat treatment for a multiple cross-linking reaction in EPs. The resultant halogen/phosphorus-free and environmentally friendly network not only suppress the migration of the functional flame retardants from the substrate, but also shows much enhanced flame-retardant property, including the UL-94 rate, total heat release and reduced peak heat release rate. As a result, the thermosets can pass the UL-94 V-0 rate and reach a LOI value at 32.7% at a very low addition amount (10 wt%) of this cross-linked flame retardant.

Abstract
By increasing the environmental concerns and depletion of petroleum resources, bio-based resins have gained interest. Recently, lignin, vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), and divanillin (6,6'-dihydroxy-5,5'-dimethoxybiphenyl-3,3'-dicarbaldehyde)-based resins have attracted attention due to the low cost, environmental benefits, good thermal stability, excellent mechanical properties, and suitability for high-performance natural fiber composite applications. This review highlights the recent use of lignin, vanillin, and divanillin-based resins with natural fiber composites and their synthesized processes. Finally, discussions are made on the curing kinetics, mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and bio-based resins' adhesion property.

Abstract
Herein, we meticulously investigated the optical shielding performances and mechanisms of green flame-retardant two-component waterborne polyurethane matte films based on a previous study. The relevant performances were evaluated by changing various environmental factors including nanoparticle content, pH, temperature and storage-time. Specifically, upon combination with TiO2, the ultraviolet-light transmittance was reduced to 1.9% and the 60° glossiness decreased by 63%. When the pH was 8.0, the shielding efficiency and transmittance of ultraviolet light were 100% and 0%, respectively. The 60° glossiness of spin-films increased with an increase in storage time. Besides, TiO2 nanoparticles were beneficial for delaying the thermal decomposition via synergistic flame retardance. Herein, we meticulously investigated the optical shielding performances and mechanisms of green flame-retardant two-component waterborne polyurethane matte films based on a previous study.![]()

Abstract
In this study, a flame retardant agent, 2,4,8,10-tetraoxo-3,9-diphosphospiro[5.5]undecane spirophosphate-4,4-diaminopair benzene disulfone-1,3,5-himetriazine (SPDSCD), is synthesized through a direct polycondensation reaction. SPDSCD is a chemically expanded phosphorus-containing flame retardant in epoxy resins (EP). The molecular structure of SPDSCD and thermal stability are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and EP/SPDSCD composites were investigated in detail. These properties are associated with the phosphorus-containing spiro structure on the main molecular chain which can promote condensation polymerization into carbon during pyrolysis, the new nitrogen-containing carbon source, and the triazine structure. SPDSCD shows good thermal stability and low flammability, the weight loss from 500 to 800 °C was only 6.1 wt%, and the residual mass at 800 °C was 48.9 wt%. With the addition of SPDSCD, the flame retardant quality of the composites was gradually enhanced, the carbon residue becomes denser, which isolates heat transfer and inhibits the volatilization of flue gas. The addition of 20 wt% SPDSCD in the EP sample was associated with a limited oxygen index (LOI) value of 26% and a vertical burning V-0 rating. Cone calorimeter test shows that the peak heat release rate is reduced by 75%; the heat release rate curve enters the heat release platform area with a value lower than the first peak, TSP is reduced by 24%, the ac-CO2Y value reduced by 25.6%, indicating that SPDSCD/EP produced less CO2, which obviously prevented the combustion of volatile gas. SPDSCD exerted a charring and barrier effect in the condensation phase. Using basic characterization and flame retardancy testing, this work determined that SPDSCD has good flame retardancy when added to EP. In this study, a flame retardant agent, 2,4,8,10-tetraoxo-3,9-diphosphospiro[5.5]undecane spirophosphate-4,4-diaminopair benzene disulfone-1,3,5-himetriazine (SPDSCD), is synthesized through a direct polycondensation reaction.![]()

Abstract
Herein, we have successfully synthesized phosphorus/nitrogen/silicon tri-elements compound phosphazene derivative hexa-[4-( N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)acetamide)phenoxy]cyclotriphosphazene (HNTPC) from hexachlorotriphosphazenitrile, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, and 3-triethoxysilylpropylamine, and it was used as an additive flame retardant in epoxy resin (EP). Then, the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the composite (HNTPC/EP) were tested. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the presence of HNTPC made EP matrix decompose at a relatively low temperature, thus promoted the formation of a stable coke layer and protected the matrix from fire. Therefore, the amount of carbon residue was markedly increased at 800°C, indicating an outstanding condensed phase flame-retardant effect. Furthermore, various combustion test data manifested that the addition of HNTPC could significantly improve the flame-retardant performance of EP. In addition, the sample could pass the vertical burning tests (UL-94) V-1 grade when the addition amount was 10% and the limiting oxygen index value was 32.6%, the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate decreased by 40.0% and 21.5%, respectively. Besides, the results of scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also showed that HNTPC can promote the formation of carbon layer and improved the flame-retardant property of EP. Finally, the condensed phase and gas phase synergistic flame-retardant mechanism of HNTPC was proposed.

Abstract
From a set of around 100 phosphorus-containing polymers tested in pyrolysis–combustion flow calorimetry, the contributions to flammability of two phosphorus-containing pendant groups (called 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and PO3) were calculated using an advanced method previously proposed and validated. The flammability properties include total heat release (THR) and heat release capacity (HRC) measured in standard conditions, i.e., anaerobic pyrolysis and complete combustion. The calculated contributions are in good agreement with the main modes of action of both phosphorus groups, i.e., flame inhibition for DOPO and char promotion for PO3. Moreover, the results provide first conclusions about the cooperative interaction between phosphorus and nitrogen, as well as the influence of the architecture of tested co-polymers.

Abstract
Introducing fire-retardant additives or building blocks into resins is a widely adopted method used for improving the fire retardancy of epoxy composites. However, the increase in viscosity and the presence of insoluble additives accompanied by resin modification remain challenges for resin transfer molding (RTM) processing. We developed a robust approach for fabricating self-extinguishing RTM composites using unmodified and flammable resins. To avoid the effects on resin fluidity and processing, we loaded the flame retardant into tackifiers instead of resins. We found that the halogen-free flame retardant, a microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) additive, was enriched on fabric surfaces, which endowed the composites with excellent fire retardancy. The composites showed a 79.2% increase in the limiting oxygen index, a 29.2% reduction in heat release during combustion, and could self-extinguish within two seconds after ignition. Almost no effect on the mechanical properties was observed. This approach is simple, inexpensive, and basically applicable to all resins for fabricating RTM composites. This approach adapts insoluble flame retardants to RTM processing. We envision that this approach could be extended to load other functions (radar absorbing, conductivity, etc.) into RTM composites, broadening the application of RTM processing in the field of advanced functional materials.

Abstract
The phosphorus/silicon-modified epoxy resin (ED231) was prepared via a two-step reaction process. Firstly, the 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-modified epoxy was synthesized by ring-opening reaction between DOPO and epoxy resin of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (E51). Afterward, the organic silicone intermediate (SY231) was grafted onto the DOPO-modified epoxy to obtain the ED231 product. The thermal stability and thermal–mechanical properties of ED231 systems were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, respectively. TGA results indicated that the phosphorus/silicon-modified epoxy resin (ED231) exhibited high char yields. For example, the solid residue for ED231-40 (5 phr DOPO and 40 phr SY231) at 800°C increased from 16.77% for the pure epoxy resin to 36.25% under nitrogen atmosphere and from 0% to 14.29% under air atmosphere, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy observations suggested that the ED231 systems could form an intact and continuous char layer which could significantly improve the thermal properties.

Abstract
Organic modification of MoSe2 sheets is firstly achieved by Atherton-Todd reaction, aiming at the acquisition of multifunctional MoSe2 hybrid. Simultaneous enhancements in fire safety and mechanical property of thermalplastic polyurethane (TPU) are obtained with the presence of this hybrid. Strong interfacial interactions between the functionalized MoSe2 sheets and TPU can be obtained, making more efficient load transfer from the weak polymer chains to the robust sheets. Besides, more coherent barrier network may be formed in polymer matrix, restraining the diffusion of decomposed fragments and reducing the supply for combustion fuel. Consequently, the decreases in heat release are observed for polymer composites. Notably, the releases of toxic gases, such as HCN and CO, are also suppressed by this barrier network, resulting in the reductions in fire toxicity. This work may open a new door for the functionalization of MoSe2 sheets and evoke significant developments in its promising applications.

Abstract
Co-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) nanosheets were successfully synthesized by the organic ligands with Schiff base structure. The laminated structure gives Co-MOF nanosheets a great advantage in the application in the flame retardant field. Meanwhile, -C═N- from Schiff base potentially provides active sites for further modification. In this work, 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) was used to modify Co-MOF (DOPO@Co-MOF) to further enhance its flame retardant efficiency. It is attractive that DOPO has a synergistic effect with Co-MOF on improving fire safety of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The obvious decrease in the values of peak heat release (27%), peak smoke production (56%), and total CO yield (20%) confirmed the enhanced fire safety of PLA composites. The possible flame retardant mechanism was proposed based on characterization results. Moreover, the addition of DOPO@Co-MOF had a positive influence on the mechanical performance, including tensile properties and impact resistance. This work designed and synthesized two-dimensional MOFs with active groups. As-prepared Co-MOF with expected structure shows a novel direction of preparing MOFs for flame retardant application.

Abstract
Epoxy resin (EP) composites with improved thermal resistance were fabricated. To solve the problem of low thermal resistance derived from phosphazene flame-retardant additives, we designed a system based on flame-retardant microcapsules P(H), with hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene as the core and polymethyl methacrylate as the shell. The core–shell structure was characterized and confirmed. The thermal resistance of the cured EP composites containing 1 wt% P(H) microcapsules was improved because of the increased glass transition temperatures. The P(2.75H)/EP composites can reach a limited oxygen index of 30.5% and V-1 rating in UL-94 tests. Heat and gas release rates were reduced during combustion tests. Residual images implied that the P(H) microcapsules may promote the formation of a flame-retardant char layer. Pyrolysis analysis demonstrated that the P(H) microcapsules can decompose in two procedures to produce flame-retardant gas components. Therefore, the flame-retardant mechanism involved the flame inhibition effect in the gas phase, and the charring effect in the condensed phase. Epoxy resin composites with improved thermal resistance and flame retardancy were fabricated based on P(H) microcapsules.![]()

Abstract
It is difficult to realize flame retardancy of epoxy without suffering much detriment in thermal stability. To solve the problem, a super-efficient phosphorus-nitrogen-containing reactive-type flame retardant, 10-(hydroxy(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl)-5,10-dihydrophenophosphazinine-10-oxide (HB-DPPA) is synthesized and characterized. When it is used as a co-curing agent of 4,4'-methylenedianiline (DDM) for curing diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), the cured epoxy achieves UL-94 V-0 rating with the limiting oxygen index of 29.3%. In this case, the phosphorus content in the system is exceptionally low (0.18 wt %). To the best of our knowledge, it currently has the highest efficiency among similar epoxy systems. Such excellent flame retardancy originates from the exclusive chemical structure of the phenophosphazine moiety, in which the phosphorus element is stabilized by the two adjacent aromatic rings. The action in the condensed phase is enhanced and followed by pressurization of the pyrolytic gases that induces the blowing-out effect during combustion. The cone calorimeter result reveals the formation of a unique intumescent char structure with five discernible layers. Owing to the super-efficient flame retardancy and the rigid molecular structure of HB-DPPA, the flame-retardant epoxy acquires high thermal stability and its initial decomposition temperature only decreases by 4.6 °C as compared with the unmodified one.
