Abstract
A range of ester pheromone analogues for carposinid moths were synthesized and evaluated for biological activity. The analogues aimed to take advantage of the structural commonality of (7Z)-alken-11-ones found in this family. Analogues were tested on two pest species: Heterocrossa rubophaga and Coscinoptycha improbana. Two of the analogues, (2Z)-nonenyl nonanoate and (4Z)-heptyl undecenoate, elicited significant electroantennogram responses. Only (4Z)-heptyl undecenoate gave consistent responses with both moth species in single sensillum recording. Field trapping trials were conducted with these two analogues both individually and in combination with the pheromone of each of the two moth species. No attraction was observed to either of the analogues alone, by either moth species. However, when (4Z)-heptyl undecenoate was coupled with the pheromone, it produced a strong inhibitory effect in H. rubophaga, reducing male moth trap catch by over 95%. No inhibitory effect on male moth trap catch was observed in C. improbana.

Ni-catalyzed homoallylation of polyhydroxy n,o-acetals with conjugated dienes promoted by triethylborane. Molecules 2014; 19:9288-306. Abstract
In the presence of Ni-catalyst and triethylborane, N,O-acetals prepared from glycolaldehyde and glyceraldehyde with primary amines in situ underwent homoallylation with conjugated dienes to provide 2-amino-5-hexenols in high regio- and stereoselectivity. Under similar reaction conditions, N,O-acetals from carbohydrates with primary amines provided the corresponding polyhydroxy-bishomoallylamines in good to reasonable yields.

Improved synthesis of (3E,6Z,9Z)-1,3,6,9-nonadecatetraene, attraction inhibitor of bruce spanworm, Operophtera bruceata, to pheromone traps for monitoring winter moth, Operophtera brumata. Abstract
The winter moth, Operophtera brumata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), is an early-season defoliator that attacks a wide variety of hardwoods and, in some cases, conifers. The insect is native to Europe but has become established in at least three areas of North America including southeastern New England. The female-produced sex attractant pheromone of the winter moth was identified as (3Z,6Z,9Z)-1,3,6,9-nonadecatetraene (1), which also attracts a native congener, the Bruce spanworm, Operophtera bruceata . Dissection, or (for certainty) DNA molecular testing, is required to differentiate between males of the two species. Thus, a trapping method that is selective for winter moth would be desirable. A geometric isomer of the pheromone, (3E,6Z,9Z)-1,3,6,9-nonadecatetraene (2), can reportedly inhibit attraction of Bruce spanworm to traps without affecting winter moth catch, but use of the pheromone and inhibitor together has not been optimized, nor has the synthesis of the inhibitor. This paper presents two new syntheses of the inhibitor (3E,6Z,9Z)-1,3,6,9-nonadecatetraene based on the intermediate (3Z,6Z)-3,6-hexadecadien-1-ol (4), which has also been utilized in the synthesis of the pheromone. The syntheses combine traditional acetylenic chemistry and Wittig olefination reactions. In one approach, 2 was synthesized in 80% purity (20% being pheromone 1), and in the second, tetraene 2 of 96% purity (and free of 1) was produced in 25% overall yield from dienol 4. The last method benefitted from a refined TEMPO-mediated PhI(OAc)(2) oxidation of 4 and a two-carbon homologation of the corresponding aldehyde 7.

Abstract
The Henry reaction with the easily available alpha-d-xylo-pentodialdose afforded a diastereomeric mixture of nitroaldoses with the alpha-d-gluco- and beta-l-ido-configuration, respectively, in good yield. When n-BuLi was used as the base, the reaction afforded the alpha-d-gluco-nitroaldose as the only product. The reduction of the nitro group in the alpha-d-gluco- and beta-l-ido-nitroaldoses, removal of the protecting groups and intramolecular reductive cyclo-amination afforded the corresponding (2S,3R,4R,5R) and (2S,3R,4R,5S) tetrahydroxyazepanes.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] An intramolecular Henry cyclization provides a promising new strategy for the transformation of nitroheptofuranoses into deoxyhydroxymethylinositols. This method has allowed a stereospecific transformation of d-glucose into 1D-3-deoxy-3-hydroxymethyl-myo-inositol.

Abstract
Synthetic study of biologically important nitrogen-containing natural products and development of new methodologies and design of leading compounds for new pharmaceuticals are described. The first total synthesis of eudistomines, manzamine C, martefragin A, cerebroside B1b, and symbioramide was accomplished and the absolute configurations of the stereogenic centers were determined. A novel methodology useful for the synthesis of alkaloids that have perhydroisoquinoline ring system such as manzamine A and B, and related alkaloids, nakadomarin A and dynemicin A, is presented. Sphingolipids, 4-stereoisomers of 1-phenyl-2-palmitoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol, were synthesized and antimalaria activity was investigated. Inhibition of DNA primase by sphingosine and its analogues is described. A new synthetic methodology for alkylation and reduction of imines has been developed, and the first example of a reagent-controlled enantioselective Pictet-Spengler reaction is described. Also novel and convenient methods using transition metal and rare earth metals including alkene metathesis, asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction, imino ene reaction, selective allylic halogenation, enantioselective Pictet-Spengler reaction, and enantioselective physostigmine synthesis are described.

Abstract
The delta 5,9 fatty acids (5Z,9Z)-5,9-hexadecadienoic acid, (5Z,9Z)-5,9-nonadecadienoic acid, and (5Z,9Z)-5,9-eicosadienoic acid were synthesized for the first time in four steps (9-12% overall yield) starting from commercially available 2-(2-bromoethyl)-1,3-dioxolane. The synthetic approach provided enough material to corroborate the structure and stereochemistry of (5Z,9Z)-5,9-nonadecadienoic acid which was recently identified in the flowers of Malvaviscus arboreus (Malvaceae). The novel phospholipids 1-hexadecanoyl-2-[(5Z,9Z)-5,9-eicosadienoyl]-sn-glycer o-3-phosphocholine and 1-octadecanoyl-2-[(5Z,9Z)-5,9-eicosadienoyl]-sn- glycero-3-phosphocholine were also synthesized from commercially available L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (egg yolk) and characterized by positive ion electrospray mass spectrometry. These are the first examples of unsymmetrical phospholipids with saturated fatty acids at the sn-1 position and delta 5,9 fatty acids at the sn-2 position.
