Abstract
AbstractThis review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of condensation-based methods for the C–H bond functionalization of amines that feature azomethine ylides as key intermediates. These transformations are typically redox-neutral and share common attributes with classic name reactions such as the Strecker, Mannich, Friedel–Crafts, Pictet–Spengler, and Kabachnik–Fields reactions, while incorporating a redox-isomerization step. This approach provides an ideal platform to rapidly transform simple starting materials into complex amines.1 Introduction1.1 General Remarks1.2 Overview1.3 Scope of This Review2 Aromatization of Cyclic Amines2.1 Pyridines from Piperidine2.2 Isoquinolines from Tetrahydroisoquinolines and Quinolines from Tetrahydroquinolines2.3 Pyrroles from 3-Pyrroline or Pyrrolidine2.4 Indoles from Indolines3 Pericyclic Reactions3.1 (3+2)-Dipolar Cycloadditions3.2 6π-Electrocyclizations3.3 1,5-Proton Shifts4 Redox-Variants of Classic Transformations Incorporating a C–H Bond Functionalization Step4.1 α-Cyanation4.2 α-Alkynylation4.3 α-Phosphonation4.4 α-Arylation4.5 α-Alkylation with Ketones4.6 Redox-Ugi Reaction4.7 Miscellaneous Intermolecular Reactions5 Redox-Annulations6 Reactions Involving β-C–H Bond Functionalization7 Outlook

Abstract
A convenient and efficient method for the regioselective macrocyclization of triazole bridged spiropyrrolidine-oxindole, and bis-spiropyrrolizidine-oxindole derivatives was accomplished through intra and self-intermolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition of azomethine ylides. The chalcone isatin precursors 9a-i required for the click reaction were obtained from the reaction of N-alkylazidoisatin 4 and propargyloxy chalcone 8a-i which in turn were obtained by the aldol condensation of propargyloxy salicylaldehyde 6 and substituted methyl ketones 7a-i. The regio- and stereochemical outcome of the cycloadducts were assigned based on 2D NMR and confirmed by single crystal XRD analysis. High efficiency, mild reaction conditions, high regio- and stereoselectivity, atom economy and operational simplicity are the exemplary advantages of the employed macrocyclization procedure.

Abstract
Amines such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline undergo redox-neutral annulations with 2-(2-oxoethyl)malonates in the presence of catalytic amounts of benzoic acid. These reactions install a fully saturated five-membered ring and provide access to structures closely related to the natural products crispine A and harmicine.

Abstract
α-Ketoamides undergo redox-annulations with cyclic secondary amines, such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, pyrrolidine, piperidine, and morpholine. Catalytic amounts of benzoic acid significantly accelerate these transformations. This approach provides polycyclic imidazolidinone derivatives in typically good yields.

Abstract
A spiroindolinone, (1S,3R,3aR,6aS)-1-benzyl-6'-chloro-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-7'-methylspiro[1,2,3a,6a-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-3,3'-1H-indole]-2',4,6-trione, was previously reported to enhance the antifungal effect of fluconazole against Candida albicans. A diastereomer of this compound was synthesized, along with various analogues. Many of the compounds were shown to enhance the antifungal effect of fluconazole against C. albicans, some with exquisite potency. One spirocyclic piperazine derivative, which we have named synazo-1, was found to enhance the effect of fluconazole with an EC50 value of 300 pM against a susceptible strain of C. albicans and going as low as 2 nM against some resistant strains. Synazo-1 exhibits true synergy with fluconazole, with an FIC index below 0.5 in the strains tested. Synazo-1 exhibited low toxicity in mammalian cells relative to the concentrations required for antifungal synergy.

Abstract
Azomethine ylides are accessed under mild conditions via benzoic acid catalyzed condensations of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines or tryptolines with aldehydes bearing a pendent dipolarophile. These intermediates undergo intramolecular [3 + 2]-cycloadditions in a highly diastereoselective fashion to form polycyclic amines with four new stereogenic centers. Challenging substrates such as piperidine, morpholine, and thiomorpholine undergo the corresponding reactions at elevated temperatures.

Abstract
A highly regio- and stereoselective synthesis of bispirooxindoles by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of in situ generated azomethine ylides from isatin and proline to different electron-deficient alkenes has been developed. The synthesis affords the desired bispiro scaffold compounds in excellent yields with high regioselectivity under mild conditions. The stereochemistry was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract
A series of novel dispirooxindoles have been synthesized through three-component 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides generated in situ by the decarboxylative condensation of isatin and an α-amino acid with the dipolarophile 5-benzylidene-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-trione. This method has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, high atom economy, excellent yields, and high regio- and stereo-selectivity.

Abstract
Following its discovery by Siegfried Ruhemann in 1910, ninhydrin rapidly became a practical analytical tool. In 1954 it was found to be an important reagent to develop fingerprints on porous surfaces. Since its use in forensic chemistry, many efforts have focused on improving the reagent. Many of the shortcomings of ninhydrin have been met by the synthesis of a variety of ninhydrin analogues. This tutorial review provides a short introduction to ninhydrin and highlights the different synthetic approaches used in the development of analogues for the detection of latent fingerprints.
