Remodelling colour contrast: implications for visual processing and colour representation

Nonlinear cortical encoding of color predicts enhanced McCollough effects in anomalous trichromats

Nonlinear encoding of chromatic contrast by the early visual cortex predicts that anomalous trichromats will show a larger McCollough effect than normal trichromats. In Experiment 1 we employed the McCollough effect to probe the cortical representation of saturation in normal trichromats, and used the results to predict enhanced McCollough effects for anomalous trichromats, which we measured in Experiment 2. In Experiment 1 three participants adapted to red and green orthogonal gratings of four different saturations. Using nulling to measure aftereffect strength, we found that halving the saturation of the inducing gratings decreased aftereffect strength only slightly, consistent with a compressive coding of saturation in early visual cortex. In anomalous trichromats, cone contrasts between red and green are greatly decreased from those of normal trichromats, but induced aftereffects are only slightly decreased, because of the non-linearity in the cortical encoding of saturation. To null the aftereffect, however, the retinal color deficiency must be overcome by adding more color to the null than required by normal trichromats. We confirmed this prediction in Experiment 2 where four anomalous trichromats required nulling stimuli approximately four times more saturated than did normal trichromats. We consider two competing models to explain our results: in a 'pigment swap' model anomalous trichromats have an altered photopigment but process color postreceptorally in the same way as normal trichromats; in a 'postreceptoral compensation' model the cortical representation of red-green contrasts is amplified to compensate for reduced cone contrasts. The latter provided a better fit to our data.

A neural field model for color perception unifying assimilation and contrast

We address the question of color-space interactions in the brain, by proposing a neural field model of color perception with spatial context for the visual area V1 of the cortex. Our framework reconciles two opposing perceptual phenomena, known as simultaneous contrast and chromatic assimilation. They have been previously shown to act synergistically, so that at some point in an image, the color seems perceptually more similar to that of adjacent neighbors, while being more dissimilar from that of remote ones. Thus, their combined effects are enhanced in the presence of a spatial pattern, and can be measured as larger shifts in color matching experiments. Our model supposes a hypercolumnar structure coding for colors in V1, and relies on the notion of color opponency introduced by Hering. The connectivity kernel of the neural field exploits the balance between attraction and repulsion in color and physical spaces, so as to reproduce the sign reversal in the influence of neighboring points. The color sensation at a point, defined from a steady state of the neural activities, is then extracted as a nonlinear percept conveyed by an assembly of neurons. It connects the cortical and perceptual levels, because we describe the search for a color match in asymmetric matching experiments as a mathematical projection on color sensations. We validate our color neural field alongside this color matching framework, by performing a multi-parameter regression to data produced by psychophysicists and ourselves. All the results show that we are able to explain the nonlinear behavior of shifts observed along one or two dimensions in color space, which cannot be done using a simple linear model.

A comparison of the effects of the colour and size of coloured overlays on young children's reading

This study compared the effects of the colour and size of overlays on reading time, reading errors and on the clarity of text with young primary school children. The sample comprised a non-clinical, typical, sample from an East London primary school. One hundred and six children aged between four and seven years were asked to read 11 short passages of text (60 words) either with full page overlays or smaller reading rulers (53 in each group). This sample included younger children than has often been tested before. The 11 short passages allowed an assessment of baseline reading performance (no reading aid) and performance while reading with each of a set of ten coloured reading aids. Two different, yet beneficial, colours were determined: the most effective and the clearest/most comfortable. Both of these measures are not usually recorded. All but four children had reduced reading times with one of the reading aids and all but one reported their aid improved the perceived visual clarity of the text: the size of the reading aid did not affect reading time or visual clarity significantly. The numbers of skipped words and errors/mis-read words also decreased when reading with the most effective and most comfortable reading aid. Near visual acuity was assessed with and without each child's most effective coloured aid. The most effective aid improved acuity in over a third of the children. Acuity has not been assessed in previous studies. As reported previously, different colours helped different children. In conclusion, coloured reading overlays reduced reading times on the reading test employed here and the size of the reading aid was not crucial to facilitate performance. The largest reductions occurred for the youngest readers, suggesting these aids may be particularly effective for early readers.

Links between global and local shape perception, coloured backgrounds, colour discrimination, and non-verbal IQ

This study explored associations between local and global shape perception on coloured backgrounds, colour discrimination, and non-verbal IQ (NVIQ). Five background colours were chosen for the local and global shape tasks that were tailored for the cone-opponent pathways early in the visual system (cardinal colour directions: L-M, loosely, reddish-greenish; and S-(L + M), or tritan colours, loosely, blueish-yellowish; where L, M and S refer to the long, middle and short wavelength sensitive cones). Participants also completed the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test (FM100) to determine whether performance on the local and global shape tasks correlated with colour discrimination overall, or with performance on the L-M and tritan subsets of the FM100 test. Overall performance on the local and global shape tasks did correlate with scores on the FM100 tests, despite the colour of the background being irrelevant to the shape tasks. There were also significantly larger associations between scores for the L-M subset of the FM100 test, compared to the tritan subset, and accuracy on some of the shape tasks on the reddish, greenish and neutral backgrounds. Participants also completed the non-verbal components of the WAIS and the SPM+ version of Raven's progressive matrices, to determine whether performance on the FM100 test, and on the local and global shape tasks, correlated with NVIQ. FM100 scores correlated significantly with both WAIS and SPM+ scores. These results extend previous work that has indicated FM100 performance is not purely a measure of colour discrimination, but also involves aspects of each participant's NVIQ, such as the ability to attend to local and global aspects of the test, part-whole relationships, perceptual organisation and good visuomotor skills. Overall performance on the local and global shape tasks correlated only with the WAIS scores, not the SPM+. These results indicate that those aspects of NVIQ that engage spatial comprehension of local-global relationships and manual manipulation (WAIS), rather than more abstract reasoning (SPM+), are related to performance on the local and global shape tasks. Links are presented between various measures of NVIQ and performance on visual tasks, but they are currently seldom addressed in studies of either shape or colour perception. Further studies to explore these issues are recommended.

What predicts the strength of simultaneous color contrast?

The perceived color of a uniform image patch depends not only on the spectral content of the light that reaches the eye but also on its context. One of the most extensively studied forms of context dependence is a simultaneous contrast display: a center-surround display containing a homogeneous target embedded in a homogenous surround. A number of models have been proposed to account for the chromatic transformations of targets induced by such surrounds, but they were typically derived in the restricted context of experiments using achromatic targets with surrounds that varied along the cardinal axes of color space. There is currently no theoretical consensus that predicts the target color that produces the largest perceived color difference for two arbitrarily chosen surround colors, or what surround would give the largest color induction for an arbitrarily chosen target. Here, we present a method for assessing simultaneous contrast that avoids some of the methodological issues that arise with nulling and matching experiments and diminishes the contribution of temporal adaption. Observers were presented with pairs of center-surround patterns and ordered them from largest to smallest in perceived dissimilarity. We find that the perceived difference for two arbitrarily chosen surrounds is largest when the target falls on the line connecting the two surrounds in color space. We also find that the magnitude of induction is larger for larger differences between chromatic targets and surrounds of the same hue. Our results are consistent with the direction law (Ekroll & Faul, 2012b), and with a generalization of Kirschmann's fourth law, even for viewing conditions that do not favor temporal adaptation.

Changes in induced hues at low luminance and following dark adaptation suggest rod-cone interactions may differ for luminance increments and decrements

Color contrast describes the influence of one color on the perception of colors in neighboring areas. This study addressed two issues: (1) the accurate representation of the color changes; (ii) the underlying visual mechanisms. Observers matched the hue that was induced in a neutral square when it was set in one of four standard colored surrounds: "red" (+L(-M) relative to neutral), "green" (-L(+M)), "purple" (+S), and "yellow" (-S). The standard and matching displays were viewed haploscopically. The standard neutral square was either a luminance increment, or decrement, both of which appeared the complementary color to the surrounds in which they were inset. In Experiment 1, the surround luminance in each eye's display was either equal, at 18 cd x m(-2), or the match surround luminance was reduced to 2.5 cd x m(-2). The matches with equal surround luminances could be represented as vector shifts in a logarithmic MacLeod-Boynton (r, b) chromaticity diagram, as described previously (Shepherd, 1997, 1999). The low luminance matches were, however, displaced further from neutral, as if larger chromatic differences were needed. The precise direction of the displacements differed for luminance increments and decrements: the red, green and yellow decrement matches were also displaced vertically downwards in the MacLeod-Boynton diagram. In Experiment 2, dark-adapting before setting repeat color matches displaced the decrement matches vertically, but did not affect the increment matches. Thus, rod intrusion in S-cone pathways may have boosted the S-cone signal for the lowest luminance decrement matches in Experiment 1 and account for the vertical shift in MacLeod-Boynton co-ordinates. The distinct pattern of displacements for low luminance increments and decrements may be explained if the match is set at a cone-opponent, rather than a cone contrast, site and if rod signals have an input only to S-cone decrement, perhaps S-OFF, pathways.

Chromatic induction from S-cone patterns

Chromatic induction from patterned backgrounds depends on the spatial as well as the chromatic aspects of the background light. Color appearance with patterned and uniform backgrounds was compared using chromaticities distinguished by only the S cones; all backgrounds were equivalent to equal-energy white in terms of L-cone and M-cone stimulation. The measurements showed larger shifts in color appearance with a patterned chromatic background than with a uniform background at any chromaticity within the pattern. The measurements also showed that inducing light within different spatial regions could cause opposite shifts in color appearance: inducing light near a test field shifted appearance toward the inducing chromaticity (assimilation), while the same light some distance from the test shifted appearance away from the inducing chromaticity (simultaneous contrast). The shifts in color appearance were accounted for by a neural receptive field with S-cone spatial antagonism.

The peculiar nature of simultaneous colour contrast in uniform surrounds

We present evidence from asymmetric colour matching experiments which strongly suggests that uniform surrounds evoke induction effects of a very peculiar nature, not representative of colour induction effects in variegated surrounds. Given the widespread use of uniform surrounds in studies of colour vision, this finding is of interest in relation to a number of current research issues, such as contrast coding of colour, functionally equivalent surrounds and colour constancy. A framework that systematises the seemingly complex colour appearance changes induced by uniform surrounds is presented and its implications are discussed.

Simultaneous S-cone contrast

Chromatic induction is the change in appearance of one light caused by a second, nearby light. We measured chromatic induction in a central test viewed within an inducing field that was varied in only short-wavelength-sensitive (S) cone stimulation. The observer matched the appearance of the central test by adjusting the chromaticity of a haploscopically presented comparison field, seen by the other eye on a dark background. When the central test weakly stimulated S cones, the S-cone level in the surround caused little change in the color appearance of the test. When the central test substantially stimulated S cones, on the other hand, the appearance of the center showed S-cone contrast: raising the level of S in the surround reduced the level of S set to match the central test. Further, a surround that weakly stimulated S cones raised the matching S-cone level above that required without a surround (dark-adapted condition). These results cannot be explained by S-cone sensitivity loss or by a two-process model of adaptation. A cortical mechanism is proposed to mediate S-cone antagonism.
