The CO2 Compensation Point of C3 Plants - A Re-Examination I. Interspecific Variability

A meta-analysis of responses of C3 plants to atmospheric CO2 : dose-response curves for 85 traits ranging from the molecular to the whole-plant level

Generalised dose-response curves are essential to understand how plants acclimate to atmospheric CO₂ . We carried out a meta-analysis of 630 experiments in which C₃ plants were experimentally grown at different [CO₂ ] under relatively benign conditions, and derived dose-response curves for 85 phenotypic traits. These curves were characterised by form, plasticity, consistency and reliability. Considered over a range of 200-1200 µmol mol^-1 CO₂ , some traits more than doubled (e.g. area-based photosynthesis; intrinsic water-use efficiency), whereas others more than halved (area-based transpiration). At current atmospheric [CO₂ ], 64% of the total stimulation in biomass over the 200-1200 µmol mol^-1 range has already been realised. We also mapped the trait responses of plants to [CO₂ ] against those we have quantified before for light intensity. For most traits, CO₂ and light responses were of similar direction. However, some traits (such as reproductive effort) only responded to light, others (such as plant height) only to [CO₂ ], and some traits (such as area-based transpiration) responded in opposite directions. This synthesis provides a comprehensive picture of plant responses to [CO₂ ] at different integration levels and offers the quantitative dose-response curves that can be used to improve global change simulation models.

External α-carbonic anhydrase and solute carrier 4 are required for bicarbonate uptake in a freshwater angiosperm

The freshwater monocot Ottelia alismoides is the only known species to operate three CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs): constitutive bicarbonate (HCO3-) use, C4 photosynthesis, and facultative Crassulacean acid metabolism, but the mechanism of HCO3- use is unknown. We found that the inhibitor of an anion exchange protein, 4,4'-diisothio-cyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonate (DIDS), prevented HCO3- use but also had a small effect on CO2 uptake. An inhibitor of external carbonic anhydrase (CA), acetazolamide (AZ), reduced the affinity for CO2 uptake but also prevented HCO3- use via an effect on the anion exchange protein. Analysis of mRNA transcripts identified a homologue of solute carrier 4 (SLC4) responsible for HCO3- transport, likely to be the target of DIDS, and a periplasmic α-carbonic anhydrase 1 (α-CA1). A model to quantify the contribution of the three different pathways involved in inorganic carbon uptake showed that passive CO2 diffusion dominates inorganic carbon uptake at high CO2 concentrations. However, as CO2 concentrations fall, two other pathways become predominant: conversion of HCO3- to CO2 at the plasmalemma by α-CA1 and transport of HCO3- across the plasmalemma by SLC4. These mechanisms allow access to a much larger proportion of the inorganic carbon pool and continued photosynthesis during periods of strong carbon depletion in productive ecosystems.

Habitability: A Review

Habitability is a widely used word in the geoscience, planetary science, and astrobiology literature, but what does it mean? In this review on habitability, we define it as the ability of an environment to support the activity of at least one known organism. We adopt a binary definition of "habitability" and a "habitable environment." An environment either can or cannot sustain a given organism. However, environments such as entire planets might be capable of supporting more or less species diversity or biomass compared with that of Earth. A clarity in understanding habitability can be obtained by defining instantaneous habitability as the conditions at any given time in a given environment required to sustain the activity of at least one known organism, and continuous planetary habitability as the capacity of a planetary body to sustain habitable conditions on some areas of its surface or within its interior over geological timescales. We also distinguish between surface liquid water worlds (such as Earth) that can sustain liquid water on their surfaces and interior liquid water worlds, such as icy moons and terrestrial-type rocky planets with liquid water only in their interiors. This distinction is important since, while the former can potentially sustain habitable conditions for oxygenic photosynthesis that leads to the rise of atmospheric oxygen and potentially complex multicellularity and intelligence over geological timescales, the latter are unlikely to. Habitable environments do not need to contain life. Although the decoupling of habitability and the presence of life may be rare on Earth, it may be important for understanding the habitability of other planetary bodies.

INORGANIC CARBON ACQUISITION BY CHRYSOPHYTES(1)

Twelve species, representing 12 families of the chrysophytes sensu lato, were tested for their ability to take up inorganic carbon. Using the pH-drift technique, CO2 compensation points generally varied between 1 and 20 μmol · L(-1) with a mean concentration of 5 μmol · L(-1) . Neither pH nor alkalinity affected the CO2 compensation point. The concentration of oxygen had a relatively minor effect on CO2 -uptake kinetics, and the mean CO2 compensation point calculated from the kinetic curves was 3.6 μmol · L(-1) at 10-15 kPa starting oxygen partial pressure and 3.8 μmol · L(-1) at atmospheric starting oxygen partial pressure (21 kPa). Similarly, uptake kinetics were not affected by alkalinity, and hence concentration of bicarbonate. Membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) in the presence and absence of acetazolamide suggested that external carbonic anhydrase in Dinobryon sertularia Ehrenb. and Synura petersenii Korschikov was either very low or absent. Rates of net HCO3 (-) uptake were very low (∼5% of oxygen evolution) using MIMS and decreased rather than increased with increasing HCO3 (-) concentration, suggesting that it was not a real uptake. The CO2 compensation points determined by MIMS for CO2 uptake and oxygen evolution were similar to those determined in pH-drift and were >1 μmol · L(-1) . Overall, the results suggest that chrysophytes as a group lack a carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM), or an ability to make use of bicarbonate as an alternative source of inorganic carbon. The possible evolutionary and ecological consequences of this are briefly discussed.

Making Mars habitable

Mars is believed to be lifeless, but it may be possible to transform it into a planet suitable for habitation by plants, and conceivably humans. The success of such an enterprise would depend on the abundance, distribution and form of materials on the planet that could provide carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen.

Effects of temperature at constant air dew point on leaf carboxylation efficiency and CO2 compensation point of different leaf types

The effect of temperature on photosynthesis at constant water-vapor pressure in the air was investigated using two sclerophyll species, Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber, and one mesophytic species, Spinacia oleracea. Photosynthesis and transpiration were measured over a range of temperatures, 20-39° C. The external concentration of CO2 was varied from 340 μbar to near CO2 compensation. The initial slope (carboxylation efficiency, CE) of the photosynthetic response to intercellular CO2 concentration, the CO2 compensation point (Γ), and the extrapolated rate of CO2 released into CO2-free air (R i) were calculated. At an external CO2 concentration of 320-340 μbar CO2, photosynthesis decreased with temperature in all species. The effect of temperature on Γ was similar in all species. While CE in S. oleracea changed little with temperature, CE decreased by 50% in Q. suber as temperature increased from 25 to 34° C. Arbutus unedo also exhibited a decrease in CE at higher temperatures but not as marked as Q. suber. The absolut value of R i increased with temperature in S. oleracea, while changing little or decreasing in the sclerophylls. Variations in Γ and R i of the sclerophyll species are not consistent with greater increase of respiration with temperature in the light in these species compared with S. oleracea.
