Ecological treatment of El Kriymat boiler ash for recovering vanadium, nickel and zinc from sulfate leach liquor

The primary goal of this work is to develop a technology that allows for the recovery of metal values from waste products, thereby promoting the wise and efficient use of our nation's resources. To achieve this goal, an industrial waste of El Kriymat boiler fly Ash was used for recovering its content of vanadium, nickel and zinc. About 97, 95 and 99% respectively of these economic elements were first dissolved from boiler fly ash magnetic concentrate (after physical concentration). Leaching experiments using optimum conditions include: 180 g/L sulfuric acid concentration and 4% solid/solid proportion manganese dioxide acts as an oxidant at 80 °C. The recovery of vanadium (V) metal ions was carried out using 3% Alamine 336 in kerosene at an equilibrium pH value of 0.9. Subsequently, 15% sodium sulfide solution was used for co-precipitation of nickel and zinc metal ions in the raffinate solution at pH value of 3.5.

Toxic Effects of Inhaled Vanadium Attached to Particulate Matter: A Literature Review

Environmental pollution is a worldwide problem recognized by the World Health Organization as a major health risk factor that affects low-, middle- and high-income countries. Suspended particulate matter is among the most dangerous pollutants, since it contains toxicologically relevant agents, such as metals, including vanadium. Vanadium is a transition metal that is emitted into the atmosphere especially by the burning of fossil fuels to which dwellers are exposed. The objective of this literature review is to describe the toxic effects of vanadium and its compounds when they enter the body by inhalation, based especially on the results of a murine experimental model that elucidates the systemic effects that vanadium has on living organisms. To achieve this goal, we reviewed 85 articles on the relevance of vanadium as a component of particulate matter and its toxic effects. Throughout several years of research with the murine experimental model, we have shown that this element generates adverse effects in all the systems evaluated, because it causes immunotoxicity, hematotoxicity, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and reprotoxicity, among other noxious effects. The results with this experimental model add evidence of the effects generated by environmental pollutants and increase the body of evidence that can lead us to make more intelligent environmental decisions for the welfare of all living beings.

Carbon species in PM10 particle fraction at different monitoring sites

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the levels of elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mass concentrations in PM10 particles (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) between seasons (winter and summer) and at different monitoring sites (urban background and rural industrial). Daily samples of airborne particles were collected on pre-fired quartz fibre filters. PM10 mass concentrations were determined gravimetrically. Samples were analysed for OC and EC with the thermal/optical transmittance method (TOT) and for PAHs by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fluorescence detector. Measurements showed seasonal and spatial variations of mass concentrations for carbon species and for all of the measured PAHs (Flu, Pyr, Chry, BaA, BbF, BaP, BkF, BghiP and IP) in PM10 at the urban site and rural monitoring site described here. Diagnostic PAH ratios (Flu/(Flu + Pyr), BaA/(BaA + Cry), IP/(IP + BghiP), BaP/BghiP, IP/BghiP and BaP/(BaP + Chry)) make it possible to assess the sources of pollution, and these showed that diesel vehicles accounted for most pollution at the rural-industrial (RI) site in the summer, whereas coal and wood combustion were the causes of winter pollution. This difference between winter and summer PAH ratios were more expressed at the RI site than at the UB site because at the UB site the predominant heating fuel was gas. The OC/EC ratio yielded the same conclusion. Factor analysis showed that EC and OC originated from traffic at both sites, PAHs with 5 or more benzene rings originated from wood pellets industry or biomass burning, while Pyr and Flu originated from diesel combustion or as a consequence of different atmospheric behaviour - evaporation and participation in oxidation and photo oxidation processes.

Characterization of Urban Atmospheres during Inhalation Exposure Studies in Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan

An inhalation exposure study for particulate matter (PM) investigates links between exposure and observed changes in respiratory function by evaluating the interactions of chemical and physical properties of the PM with physiological mechanisms. Laboratory studies are useful in this regard, but provide limited information because of the difficulty in reproducing real atmospheric PM compositions and processes. To better understand the types of particles to which people are actually exposed in their daily lives, and the human health risks for source-specific PM, a real world assessment of the source-to-receptor pathways for ambient PM is vital. This was accomplished using a unique mobile air research laboratory (AirCARE1) which enables inhalation exposure studies in real-world settings. The overall goal of this study was to determine the effects of concentrated air particulates (CAPs) from 2 different urban atmospheres in Michigan on the lungs of ovalbumin-sensitized rats concurrently challenged with the allergen. Our work demonstrated that short-term (8 hours) exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm; PM2.5) concentrated from 2 different urban atmospheres in Michigan induced distinct allergic responses in the lungs of rats. This paper presents detailed characterization of CAPs and their sources in an effort to define possible associations between the observed health effects and source-specific ambient PM2.5.

Incomplete lung recovery following sub-acute inhalation of combustion-derived ultrafine particles in mice

Background

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the six criteria pollutant classes for which National Ambient Air Quality Standards have been set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Exposures to PM have been correlated with increased cardio-pulmonary morbidity and mortality. Butadiene soot (BDS), generated from the incomplete combustion of 1,3-butadiene (BD), is both a model PM mixture and a real-life example of a petrochemical product of incomplete combustion. There are numerous events, including wildfires, accidents at refineries and tank car explosions that result in sub-acute exposure to high levels of airborne particles, with the people exposed facing serious health problems. These real-life events highlight the need to investigate the health effects induced by short-term exposure to elevated levels of PM, as well as to assess whether, and if so, how well these adverse effects are resolved over time. In the present study, we investigated the extent of recovery of mouse lungs 10 days after inhalation exposures to environmentally-relevant levels of BDS aerosols had ended.

Methods

Female BALB/c mice exposed to either HEPA-filtered air or to BDS (5 mg/m³ in HEPA filtered air, 4 h/day, 21 consecutive days) were sacrificed immediately, or 10 days after the final BDS exposure. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected for cytology and cytokine analysis. Lung proteins and RNA were extracted for protein and gene expression analysis. Lung histopathology evaluation also was performed.

Results

Sub-acute exposures of mice to hydrocarbon-rich ultrafine particles induced: (1) BALF neutrophil elevation; (2) lung mucosal inflammation, and (3) increased BALF IL-1β concentration; with all three outcomes returning to baseline levels 10 days post-exposure. In contrast, (4) lung connective tissue inflammation persisted 10 days post-exposure; (5) we detected time-dependent up-regulation of biotransformation and oxidative stress genes, with incomplete return to baseline levels; and (6) we observed persistent particle alveolar load following 10 days of recovery.

Conclusion

These data show that 10 days after a 21-day exposure to 5 mg/m³ of BDS has ended, incomplete lung recovery promotes a pro-biotransformation, pro-oxidant, and pro-inflammatory milieu, which may be a starting point for potential long-term cardio-pulmonary effects.

An evaluation of the toxicological aspects and potential doses from the inhalation of coal combustion products

This paper reviews toxicological literature pertaining to coal combustion products (CCPs) inhalation and presents case studies on the inhalation of CCPs from the Kingston Fossil Plant area and from the Colbert Fossil Plant CCP landfill site. While most research regarding coal plant emissions focuses on fly ash, this article takes a holistic approach to examining not only emitted particulate matter such as fly ash, but also the theoretical calculated doses of landfilled CCPs. Furthermore, these doses are compared to in vitro and in vivo studies in order to highlight differences between laboratory-based studies and to emphasize the difficulty in extrapolating effects from inhalation exposures. In both case studies, fugitive emissions from the Kingston ash spill or the Colbert CCP-handling operations did not exceed any national ambient air quality standards or reference concentrations for individual components. Adverse effects such as mild pulmonary inflammation noted in the reviewed literature were in response to doses much higher than would be likely to occur in humans exposed to landfilled CCPs. We conclude that the doses for fugitive emissions calculated herein do not appear to be high enough to elicit a measurable adverse response in humans.

Carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses coupled with palynological data of PM10 in Wrocław city (SW Poland)--assessment of anthropogenic impact

We have applied both palynological and carbon and nitrogen isotopic analyses of PM10 (particulate matter with a diameter of 10 μm or less) to trace its origin and to assess the anthropogenic impact for the area under study. The PM10 samples were collected in Wrocław (SW Poland) by the Regional Inspectorate for Environment Protection during the year 2007. The usefulness of the palynological observations in the case of PM10 is much lower than that for total suspended particles due to the resolution of absorbed particles, but is still helpful for distinguishing C(3)/C(4) plants that indicate long-distance transport of pollutants. The δ(13)C(PM10) values varied seasonally from-26.9 to-25.1‰. The δ(15)N(PM10) values showed chaotic fluctuations and varied from 5.0 to 13.7‰. Our results indicated that during the heating period, the PM10 particles in Wrocław are derived mainly from local home heaters, whereas in the growing period, PM10 particles are derived from local transport and are partially generated by the industrial application of coal combustion outside the city of Wrocław.

Toxic elements content in PM10 samples from a coastal area of the Northern Adriatic Sea

PM10 samples were collected during winter and summer seasons at two different sites in the area of Trieste (Italy). The content of As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and V in the PM10 samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, with the purpose of evaluating the relevance of PM10 inhalation as a route of human exposure to these elements. The results showed that the ambient air concentration of the aforementioned elements were below the limits or target values for both sites and season. Site and season-specific correlation analysis was conducted for the identification of metals with similar origin: very good correlation for the couple Ni-V was found in both sites and seasons, showing the influence of combustion of heavy oils in PM10 composition. The inter-site and seasonal variability of both PM10 and metal concentrations were examined. A stronger impact by the vehicular traffic on the PM10 and metal concentrations was found for the urban site in both seasons. Because of the great importance of the “Bora” wind on the local climate, variability of PM10 and toxic elements concentration with wind were analysed, allowing determination of the effect of wind on dilution of the pollutants for the urban site during both seasons.

Evaluation of respiratory functions of residents around the Orhaneli thermal power plant in Turkey

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the health and respiratory function of residents around the Orhaneli thermal power plant in Turkey. The study was conducted using face-to-face interviews, and respiratory functions were measured with a spirometer. The respiratory functions of 2350 residents, 15 years and older, living in communities near the coal-fired Orhaneli thermal power plant in Turkey were measured. The control group consisted of 469 persons from similar communities without a nearby power plant. The FEV1 (forced expiratory volume after 1 s) and FVC (forced vital capacity) values of the study participants were significantly lower than those of the control group, and residents directly downwind of the plant's smokestack showed greater impairment of respiratory functions compared with residents upwind.

Wastes as co-fuels: the policy framework for solid recovered fuel (SRF) in Europe, with UK implications

European Union (EU) member states are adopting the mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) of municipal solid waste (MSW) to comply with EU Landfill Directive (LD) targets on landfill diversion. We review the policy framework for MSW-derived solid recovered fuel (SRF), composed of paper, plastic, and textiles, in the energy-intensive industries. A comparatively high calorific value (15-18 MJ/ kg) fuel, SRF has the potential to partially replace fossil fuel in energy-intensive industries, alongside MSW in dedicated combustion facilities. Attempts by the European standards organization (CEN) to classify fuel properties consider net calorific value (CV) and chlorine and mercury content. However, the particle size, moisture content, and fuel composition also require attention and future studies must address these parameters. We critically review the implications of using SRF as a co-fuel in thermal processes. A thermodynamic analysis provides insight into the technical and environmental feasibility of co-combusting SRF in coal-fired power plants and cement kilns. Results indicate the use of SRF as co-fuel can reduce global warming and acidification potential significantly. This policy analysis is of value to waste managers, policy specialists, regulators, and the waste management research community.

Vanadium recovery from oil fly ash by leaching, precipitation and solvent extraction processes

In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of oil fly ash from power plants and to valorize this waste material, the removal of vanadium was investigated using leaching processes (acidic and alkaline treatments), followed by a second step of metal recovery from leachates involving either solvent extraction or selective precipitation. Despite a lower leaching efficiency (compared to sulfuric acid), sodium hydroxide was selected for vanadium leaching since it is more selective for vanadium (versus other transition metals). Precipitation was preferred to solvent extraction for the second step in the treatment since: (a) it is more selective; enabling complete recovery of vanadate from the leachate in the form of pure ammonium vanadate; and (b) stripping of the loaded organic phase (in the solvent extraction process) was not efficient. Precipitation was performed in a two-step procedure: (a) aluminum was first precipitated at pH 8; (b) then ammonium chloride was added at pH 5 to bring about vanadium precipitation.

Characterization of complex mixtures in urban atmospheres for inhalation exposure studies

A real-world assessment of the source-to-receptor pathways for ambient particulate matter (PM), as opposed to in a laboratory environment, was crucial for gaining a better understanding of the types of particles to which people are actually exposed in their daily lives, and of the human-health risks for source-specific PM. However, obtaining scientific evidence linking specific source emissions to health responses was not an easy task; ambient PM possesses diverse chemical, physical and thermodynamic properties, and is subjected to numerous complex atmospheric processes in which source type, source strength, sinks, and meteorology interact continuously. Our collaborative PM health research studies utilized an integrated approach that employs detailed characterization of ambient PM concurrent with inhalation toxicology studies using animal models and concentrated fine air particulates (CAPs). Ambient PM2.5 (PM less than 2.5 microm in mean aerodynamic diameter) was concentrated with a Harvard fine particle concentrator housed in AirCARE1, a unique mobile air research laboratory which enables inhalation exposure studies in real-world settings. This paper discusses the importance of comprehensive characterization of ambient PM2.5, CAPs and their sources, and the associated challenges. In a southwest Detroit community where the pediatric asthma rate is about three times the national average, a detailed assessment was performed including: characterization of ambient PM2.5 and CAPs; identification of major emission sources of PM2.5; and quantification of trace elements in lung tissues of laboratory rats that were exposed to CAPs, all in an effort to define source-receptor pathways for ambient PM2.5. Our findings to date constitute evidence of the retention of ambient urban particulates from local combustion sources within animal tissues from short-term exposures, and possible associations between the observed health effects and source-specific PM2.5. However, a complete understanding of the effects of complex mixtures of air pollutants and their toxicological impacts still faces many challenges.

Pulmonary retention of particulate matter is associated with airway inflammation in allergic rats exposed to air pollution in urban Detroit

A collaborative research study was conducted in order to improve our understanding of the source-to-receptor pathway for ambient fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter < or = 2.5 mu m; PM2.5) and subsequently to investigate the identity and sources of toxic components in PM2.5 responsible for adverse health effects in allergic humans. This research used a Harvard fine particle concentrator to expose Brown Norway rats, with and without ovalbumin-induced allergic airway disease, to concentrated air particles (CAPs) generated from ambient air in an urban Detroit community where the pediatric asthma rate was three times higher than the national average. Rats were exposed to CAPs during the exposure periods in July (mean = 676 microg/m3) and September (313 microg/m3) of 2000. Twenty-four hours after exposures lung lobes were either lavaged with saline to determine cellularity and protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), or removed for analysis by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect ambient PM2.5-derived trace element retention. PM2.5 trace elements of anthropogenic origin, lanthanum (La), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), and sulfur (S), were recovered from the lung tissues of CAPs-exposed rats. Recovery of those pulmonary anthropogenic particles was further increased in rats with allergic airways. In addition, eosinophils and protein in BALF were increased only in allergic animals exposed to CAPs. These results demonstrate preferential retention in allergic airways of air particulates derived from identified local combustion sources after a short-term exposure. Our findings suggest that the enhancement of allergic airway responses by exposure to PM2.5 is mediated in part by increased pulmonary deposition and localization of potentially toxic elements in urban air.
