Abstract
A line of simian virus 40-transformed hamster kidney cells was exposed to ultraviolet radiation at eleven different wavelengths in the region 238-302 nm. An action spectrum derived from the resulting exposure-response curves for the induction of simian virus 40 from these cells exhibits a broad peak in the region 260-270 nm suggesting DNA as the major chromophore for this response. This conclusion is consistent with results obtained by other investigators who have noted viral induction by a number of DNA-damaging agents.

Abstract
The reactivation of UV-irradiated herpes simplex virus (HSV) was investigated in irradiated and unirradiated transformed hamster cells in which infectious simian virus 40 (SV40) can be induced. Reactivation was enhanced when the cells were treated with UV light or mitomycin C prior to infection with HSV. The IV dose-response curve of this enhanced reactivation was strikingly similar to that found for induction of SV40 virus synthesis in cells treated under identical condictions. This is the first time that two SOS functions described in bacteria have been demonstrated in a single mammalian cell line.

Abstract
NZB mice injected intramuscularly throughout a 6-month period with the immunosuppressant azathioprine (Imuran) developed lymphocytic lymphomas 6--7 months after treatment was initiated. These malignancies were quite distinct from the reticulum-cell neoplasia which occurs spontaneously in the strain, and were readily transplantable to NZB or histocompatible BALB/c recipients. Xenotropic, but not ecotropic murine leukaemia virus (MuLV) was detected in leukaemic tissues of some donor and recipient NZBs when tested in vitro by co-cultivation with permissive cell lines, genome rescue, XC and viral polymerase assays. Virus filtrates prepared from donor leukaemic tissues were non-pathogenic when injected into newborn C3H mice. These results are evidence against a mandatory ecotropic MuLV genome in lymphocytic neoplasia.

Abstract
Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses against antigens associated with primate C-type oncoviruses were evaluated in humans by microcytotoxicity and radioimmunoprecipitation assays. Five of six women tested sequentially during pregnancy developed selective cell-mediated reactivity against baboon endogenous virus (BEV)--infected human fibroblasts. Responsiveness peaked during the second and third trimesters and corresponded temporally with elevated antibody levels to BEV antigens. Similar cell-mediated reactivity was not observed in nonpregnant individuals. Selective cell-mediated reactivity directed against cells infected with the simian sarcoma virus-simian sarcoma associated virus complex (SSV--SSAV) was observed in four of 20 healthy adults (three of 14 nonpregnant, one of six pregnant). These observations suggest that cell-mediated reactivity against primate C-type oncoviruses is occasionally detected in healthy nonpregnant adults, but that during pregnancy both cell-mediated and humoral reactivity against BEV may become selectively expressed.

Abstract
Six oncogenic cell lines were established from primary sarcomas that had been induced in thymectomized, aged, BALB/cSt mice by the injection of 3-methylcholanthrene. Of these lines, three produced B-tropic murine leukemia virus (MuLV), i.e. MuLV that would patently infect fibroblasts of BALB/c origin but not those from NIH Swiss mice. One of these lines, M-138, produced large quantities of virus, permitting the isolation of milligram quantities of B-tropic MuLV. Neonatal BALB/c mice injected with the M-138 MuLV developed high plasma levels of the species-specific virion antigen p30, but during 9 months of observation failed to manifest clinical signs of leukemia. Plasma p30 levels of NIH Swiss mice (non-permissive host) that were inoculated also as neonates with the same virus preparation, remained undetectable by radioimmunoassay. Xenotropic MuLV, i.e. that which infects cells of species other than the species of origin, was released by one of the three remaining cell lines. Two of the six original lines have remained free of detectable oncornavirus production. Our results suggest that cell lines that are stable sources of large quantities of B-tropic MuLV may be easily obtainable by the described manipulations. Equally important, however, is the fact that these data re-emphasize the danger that is inherent in assuming that a cell line is virus-free simply because it was isolated from a chemical carcinogen-induced neoplasm

Abstract
The cytotoxic cells from the spleens of normal rats, which lyse Gross-virus-induced lymphoma target cells in a short-term 51Cr release test, are predominantly small to medium-sized cells sedimenting at 4-5 mm/h as shown by velocity sedimentation analysis. Their cytotoxic activity is relatively resistant to gamma-radiation, 50% surviving 1,000 rads and 30% remaining after 5,000 rads, and to heat, since 20 min incubation at 48-51 degrees C is required for its abolition. In these properties the natural killer (NK) cells are very similar to the cytotoxic T cells from tumour-immune rats, and they share in addition a requirement for Ca++ ions for cytolysis. They differ in that they are non-T cells as defined by their resistance to anti-T-cell antiserum and complement, and by their presence in T-cell-deprived rats. They lack detectable surface Ig, Fc receptors and phagocytic or adherence properties and belong therefore to that small proportion of lymphoid cells lacking the surface markers of T or B lymphocytes, as do the comparable NK cells of mice. Cytotoxicity appears to involve an autonomous, papain-sensitive recognition structure on the surface of NK cells, rather than acquired cytophilic antibody operating through an antibody-dependent mechanism.

Abstract
The interactions between aberrant immune responses and C-type oncornaviruses in mice are complex. These viruses may be activated during certain immune responses, e.g., histocompatibility reactions, in the face of chronic immunosuppression. Oncornaviruses, themselves, may induce autoaggressive cell-mediated responses in certain lymphoid subpopulations, and these autoimmune reactions may be important in subsequent lymphomagenesis. Parallel events may occur in other animal models, e.g., the NZB mouse, and in certain human disorders, e.g., Sjögren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and myasthenia gravis.

Abstract
H-2 alloantisera have been previously reported to contain antibodies against murine leukemia viral antigens, but the nature of the viral antigens on mouse cells which interact with these antibodies has not been established. We have found that H-2 alloantisera recognize components of molecular weight 70 000-80 000 mouse lymphocytes and leukemia cells. These components were also detected by a goat antiserum against the murine leukemia virus (MuLV) glycoprotein (gp 70) and are therefore closely related to or identical with that viral protein. Although most H-2 alloantisera detected gp 70-like molecules on lymphocytes and leukemia cells from a great variety of mouse strains, only one H-2 alloantiserum was found to interact with a gp 70 component on cells from C57BL/10 and C57BL/6 mice. Animals such as C57BL/10 mice that lacked the component reacting with most H-2 alloantisera showed increased serum levels of anti-MuLV antibodies after injection of B10.A spleen cells having a gp 70 component detectable by other H-2 alloantisera. In contrast, strains with cells reactive to antiviral antibodies in the H-2 alloantisera had low responses to MuLV antigens after a similar immunization procedure. Serum levels of anti-MuLV antibodies in both groups of mice, however, were increased after injection of Freund's adjuvant. These observations suggest that anti-MuLV antibodies in mouse alloantisera may arise from a response to viral antigens on the immunizing cells and general stimulation of the immune system.

Abstract
The carcinogenic effects of limited and repeated skin applications of propane sultone were investigated in three strains of mice, CF1, C3H and CBah (a hairless strain). Propane sultone was shown to be carcinogenic when given as a single application of a 25% w/v solution in toluene and also following twice weekly application of a 2.5% w/v solution for up to 58 weeks. More limited exposure to 2.5% w/v solutions of propane sultone resulted in a few skin tumours, although the incidences were not statistically significant. Most neoplasms were papillomas or carcinomas, although a small number of mesenchymal tumours of dermal origin also developed. No skin neoplasms were found in any control mice. The skin application of propane sultone was associated with a statistically significant increase in the incidence of systematic neoplasia in CFl and C3H mice. The exposed CFl mice had a higher incidence of neoplasms of lymphoreticular and lung origin, while female C3H mice showed a higher incidence of mammary gland and uterine tumours. In mice exposed to beta-propiolactone as a positive control, neoplasms developed at the site of application but, there was no evidence of increased systemic neoplasis in contrast to the findings with ptopane sultone.

Abstract
Immunotherapy of human tumors is a promising new modality that remains highly investigational and poses unforeseen risks. It should preferably be conducted in patients brought into remission by conventional antitumor therapy and against the background of a complex, reliable monitoring system capable of quantitatively measuring the patient's antitumor immune reactions.

Abstract
Both mouse-tropic and zenotropic C-type RNA viruses were activated in BALB/c mice during rejection reactions against skin grafts from mice differing at the major histocompatibility locus (A/J) or sharing this locus (DBA/2). Animals that maintained their skin grafts following immunosuppression with antilymphocyte serum (ALS) or cyclophosphamide had a much higher incidence of virus-positivity than animals that did not receive ALS or cyclophosphamide, or that rejected their skin grafts despite immunosuppressive therapy. ALS itself activated type-C viruses from a small proportion of BALB/c mice whereas cyclophoshamide alone did not. Type C viruses were detected in spleens and regional nodes draining skin-graft sites between 1 and 2 weeks following transplantation; thereafter they reached maximum titers in spleens. Viruses were not detected at skin-graft sites, in tails or in thymuses of grafted animals. Virus activation was associated with splenic histological changes consisting of germinal center formation, diffuse hyperplasia of reticulum cells, depletion of periarteriolar lymphocytes and hyperplasia of red pulp hematopoietic elements.

Abstract
Splenic lymphocytes from (BALB/c times A/J) F 1 mice are cytotoxic for BALB/c fibroblasts infected with an endogenous C-type leukemia virus, but are not cytotoxic for uninfected BALB/c fibroblasts. These results indicate that mice do not exhibit cell-mediated immune tolerance to antigens associated with endogenous C-type viruses.
