Explainable Prediction of Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Property of Polymer Brush Surfaces by Chemical Modeling and Machine Learning

Polymer informatics has attracted increasing attention as a specialized branch of material informatics. Hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity is one of the most important properties of interfaces involved in antifouling, self-cleaning, antifogging, oil/water separation, protein adsorption, and bioseparation. Establishing a quantitative structure-property relationship for the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of polymeric interfaces could significantly benefit from machine learning modeling. In this study, we aimed to construct machine learning models that could predict the static water contact angle (CA) as an indicator of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity based on a data set of polymer brushes. The features of the polymer brush surfaces were numerically described using their grafted structures (thickness) and molecular descriptors derived from their chemical structures. We achieved accurate prediction and understanding of important parameters by employing appropriate molecular descriptors considering the Pearson correlation and machine learning models trained with nested cross-validation. The model interpretation by Shapley additive extension analysis indicated that the amount of partial polar/nonpolar structure in the molecule as well as the averaged hydrophobicity represented by MolLogP plays an important role in determining the CA. Moreover, the model can predict the CAs of polymer brushes composed of chemical structures that are not present in existing databases. The CA values of the hypothetical polymer brushes are predicted.

Antimicrobial Polymer Surfaces Containing Quaternary Ammonium Centers (QACs): Synthesis and Mechanism of Action

Synthetic polymer surfaces provide an excellent opportunity for developing materials with inherent antimicrobial and/or biocidal activity, therefore representing an answer to the increasing demand for antimicrobial active medical devices. So far, biologists and material scientists have identified a few features of bacterial cells that can be strategically exploited to make polymers inherently antimicrobial. One of these is represented by the introduction of cationic charges that act by killing or deactivating bacteria by interaction with the negatively charged parts of their cell envelope (lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycan, and membrane lipids). Among the possible cationic functionalities, the antimicrobial activity of polymers with quaternary ammonium centers (QACs) has been widely used for both soluble macromolecules and non-soluble materials. Unfortunately, most information is still unknown on the biological mechanism of action of QACs, a fundamental requirement for designing polymers with higher antimicrobial efficiency and possibly very low toxicity. This mini-review focuses on surfaces based on synthetic polymers with inherently antimicrobial activity due to QACs. It will discuss their synthesis, their antimicrobial activity, and studies carried out so far on their mechanism of action.

Thickness of Nanoscale Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Layers Determines the Motion of Sliding Water Drops

Layers of nanometer thick polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are applied as hydrophobic coatings because of their environmentally friendly and chemically inert properties. In applications such as heat exchangers or fog harvesting, low water drop friction on surfaces is required. While the onset of motion (static friction) has been studied, the knowledge of dynamic friction needs to be improved. To minimize drop friction, it is essential to understand which processes lead to energy dissipation and cause dynamic friction? Here, the dynamic friction of drops on PDMS brushes of different thicknesses is measured, covering the whole available velocity regime. The brush thickness L turns out to be a predictor for drop friction. 4-5 nm thick PDMS brush shows the lowest dynamic friction. A certain minimal thickness is necessary to form homogeneous surfaces and reduce the attractive van der Waals interaction between water and the substrate. The increase in dynamic friction above L = 5 nm is also attributed to the increasing viscoelastic dissipation of the capillary ridge formed at the contact line. The height of the ridge is related to the brush thickness. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and atomic force measurements support this interpretation. Sum-frequency generation further indicates a maximum order at the PDMS-water interface at intermediate thickness.

Synthesis of Polymer Brushes on Tannic Acid-Coated Copper Particles and Surface Co-Assembly

The synthesis of polymer brushes on inorganic particles is an effective approach to surface modification. The polymer brushes on the surface endow the substrates with new surface properties. However, the lack of functional groups and the difficulty of surface modification have made it difficult to develop an effective method for the synthesis of polymer brushes on metal surfaces. Herein, a simple and versatile strategy for synthesizing polymer brushes on copper particles is reported. Tannic acid (TA) molecules are adsorbed onto the surfaces of copper particles, forming TA coatings. Quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (qPDMAEMA-b-PS) block copolymer (BCP) chains are grafted on the TA coatings through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, and PS brushes are grafted on the copper particles. The effects of TA concentration on the adsorption of TA and PS brush synthesis are discussed. The PS brushes are able to form surface nanostructures on the copper particles through co-assembly with PDMAEMA-b-PS BCP chains. The effect of BCP concentration on the surface nanostructures is investigated. It is reasonable to expect that polymer brushes and surface nanostructures can be synthesized on different metal surfaces by using the TA-coating approach reported in this paper.

Preparation and Performance Study of HTPB-g-(PNIPAM/PEG) Thermoresponsive Polymer Brush

In recent years, a great deal of work has been devoted to the development of thermoresponsive polymers that can be made into new types of smart materials. In this paper, a branched polymer, HTPB-g-(PNIPAM/PEG), with polyolefin chain segments as the backbone and having polyethylene glycol (PEG) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as side chains was synthesized by ATRP and click reactions using N3-HTPB-Br as the macroinitiator. This initiator was designed and synthesized using hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) as the substrate. The temperature-responsive behavior of the branched polymer was investigated. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the branched polymer was determined by ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis) and was found to be 35.2 °C. The relationship between the diameter size of micelles and temperature was determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). It was found that the diameter size changed at 36 °C, which was nearly consistent with the result obtained by UV-vis. The results of the study indicate that HTPB-g-(PNIPAM/PEG) is a temperature-responsive polymer. At room temperature, the polymer can self-assemble into composite micelles, with the main chain as the core and the branched chain as the shell. When the temperature was increased beyond LCST, the polyolefin main chain along with the PNIPAM branched chain assembled to form the nucleus, and the PEG branched chain constituted the shell.

Gamma radiation-induced grafting of poly(butyl acrylate) onto ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer for improved crude oil flowability

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers are widely employed as pour point depressants to enhance the flow properties of crude oil. However, EVA copolymers have limitations that necessitate their development. This work investigated the modification of EVA via gamma radiation-induced grafting of butyl acrylate (BuA) monomers and the evaluation of grafted EVA as a pour point depressant for crude oil. The successful grafting of poly(butyl acrylate) p(BuA) onto EVA was verified through grafting parameters, FTIR spectroscopy, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Treating crude oil with 3000 ppm of (EVA)0kGy, (EVA)50kGy, and (1EVA:3BuA)50kGy yielded substantial reductions in pour point of 24, 21, and 21 °C, respectively. Also, rheological characterization demonstrated improving evidenced by a viscosity reduction of 76.20%, 67.70%, and 71.94% at 25 °C, and 83.16%, 74.98%, and 81.53% at 12 °C. At low dosages of 1000 ppm, the EVA-g-p(BuA) exhibited superior pour point reductions compared to unmodified EVA, highlighting the benefit of incorporating p(BuA) side chains. The grafted EVA copolymers with p(BuA) side chains showed excellent potential as crude oil flow improvers by promoting more effective adsorption and co-crystallization with paraffin wax molecules.

Study of Hydration Repulsion of Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes Resistant to Protein Adhesion through Molecular Simulations

The fabrication of antifouling zwitterionic polymer brushes represents a leading approach to mitigate nonspecific adhesion on the surfaces of medical devices. This investigation seeks to elucidate the correlation between the material composition and structural attributes of these polymer brushes in preventing protein adhesion. To achieve this goal, we modeled three different zwitterionic brushes, namely, carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA), sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), and (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl)-phosphorylcholine (MPC). The simulations revealed that elevating the grafting density enhances the structural stability, hydration strength, and resistance to protein adhesion exhibited by the polymer brushes. PCBMA manifests a more robust hydration layer, while PMPC demonstrates the slightest interaction with proteins. In a comprehensive evaluation, PSBMA polymer brushes emerged as the best choice with superior stability, enhanced protein repulsion, and minimally induced protein deformation, resulting in effective resistance to nonspecific adhesion. The high-density SBMA polymer brushes significantly reduce the level of protein adhesion in AFM testing. In addition, we have pioneered the quantitative characterization of hydration repulsion in polymer brushes by analyzing the hydration repulsion characteristics at different materials and graft densities. In summary, our study provides a nuanced understanding of the material and structural determinants influencing the capacity of zwitterionic polymer brushes to thwart protein adhesion. Additionally, it presents a quantitative elucidation of hydration repulsion, contributing to the advancement and application of antifouling polymer brushes.

Bioinspired Interfacial Friction Control: From Chemistry to Structures to Mechanics

Organisms in nature have evolved a variety of surfaces with different tribological properties to adapt to the environment. By studying, understanding, and summarizing the friction and lubrication regulation phenomena of typical surfaces in nature, researchers have proposed various biomimetic friction regulation theories and methods to guide the development of new lubrication materials and lubrication systems. The design strategies for biomimetic friction/lubrication materials and systems mainly include the chemistry, surface structure, and mechanics. With the deepening understanding of the mechanism of biomimetic lubrication and the increasing application requirements, the design strategy of multi-strategy coupling has gradually become the center of attention for researchers. This paper focuses on the interfacial chemistry, surface structure, and surface mechanics of a single regulatory strategy and multi-strategy coupling approach. Based on the common biological friction regulation mechanism in nature, this paper reviews the research progress on biomimetic friction/lubrication materials in recent years, discusses and analyzes the single and coupled design strategies as well as their advantages and disadvantages, and describes the design concepts, working mechanisms, application prospects, and current problems of such materials. Finally, the development direction of biomimetic friction lubrication materials is prospected.

Nanopatterned Monolayers of Bioinspired, Sequence-Defined Polypeptoid Brushes for Semiconductor/Bio Interfaces

The ability to control and manipulate semiconductor/bio interfaces is essential to enable biological nanofabrication pathways and bioelectronic devices. Traditional surface functionalization methods, such as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), provide limited customization for these interfaces. Polymer brushes offer a wider range of chemistries, but choices that maintain compatibility with both lithographic patterning and biological systems are scarce. Here, we developed a class of bioinspired, sequence-defined polymers, i.e., polypeptoids, as tailored polymer brushes for surface modification of semiconductor substrates. Polypeptoids featuring a terminal hydroxyl (-OH) group are designed and synthesized for efficient melt grafting onto the native oxide layer of Si substrates, forming ultrathin (∼1 nm) monolayers. By programming monomer chemistry, our polypeptoid brush platform offers versatile surface modification, including adjustments to surface energy, passivation, preferential biomolecule attachment, and specific biomolecule binding. Importantly, the polypeptoid brush monolayers remain compatible with electron-beam lithographic patterning and retain their chemical characteristics even under harsh lithographic conditions. Electron-beam lithography is used over polypeptoid brushes to generate highly precise, binary nanoscale patterns with localized functionality for the selective immobilization (or passivation) of biomacromolecules, such as DNA origami or streptavidin, onto addressable arrays. This surface modification strategy with bioinspired, sequence-defined polypeptoid brushes enables monomer-level control over surface properties with a large parameter space of monomer chemistry and sequence and therefore is a highly versatile platform to precisely engineer semiconductor/bio interfaces for bioelectronics applications.

Efficient Approach for Direct Robust Surface Grafting of Polyethyleneimine onto a Polyester Surface during Moulding

This paper uses a very effective way for surface modification of thermoplastic polymers during moulding. It is based on a grafting reaction between a thin layer of a functional polymer, deposited on a substrate in advance, and a polymer melt. In this paper, a glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) that was brought in contact with a polyethyleneimine layer during fused filament fabrication is investigated. The focus of this paper is the investigation of the reaction product. Grafting was realised by the formation of stable amide bonds by amidation of ester groups in the main chain of a PETG. XPS investigations revealed that the conversion of amino groups was very high, the distribution was even, and the quantity of amino groups per polyester surface area was still very high. The surface properties of the produced polyester part were mainly characterised by polyethyleneimine. The grafting was able to resist several cycles of extraction in alkaline solutions. The stability was only limited by saponification of the polyester. The degree of surface modification was dependent on the molar mass of polyethyleneimine. This could be rationalised, because grafting only occurred with the one polyethyleneimine molecule that is in close vicinity to the polyester surface when both components come in contact. Fused deposition modelling was chosen as the model process with control over each processing step. However, any other moulding process may be applied, particularly injection moulding for mass production.

Polymer Brushes and Surface Nanostructures: Molecular Design, Precise Synthesis, and Self-Assembly

For over two decades, polymer brushes have found wide applications in industry and scientific research. Now, polymer brush research has been a significant research focus in the community of polymer science. In this review paper, we give an introduction to the synthesis, self-assembly, and applications of one-dimensional (1D) polymer brushes on polymer backbones, two-dimensional (2D) polymer brushes on flat surfaces, and three-dimensional (3D) polymer brushes on spherical particles. Examples of the synthesis of polymer brushes on different substrates are provided. Studies on the formation of the surface nanostructures on solid surfaces are also reviewed in this article. Multicomponent polymer brushes on solid surfaces are able to self-assemble into surface micelles (s-micelles). If the s-micelles are linked to the substrates through cleavable linkages, the s-micelles can be cleaved from the substrates, and the cleaved s-micelles are able to self-assemble into hierarchical structures. The formation of the surface nanostructures by coassembly of polymer brushes and "free" polymer chains (coassembly approach) or polymerization-induced surface self-assembly approach, is discussed. The applications of the polymer brushes in colloid and biomedical science are summarized. Finally, perspectives on the development of polymer brushes are offered in this article.

Colloidal adsorption in planar polymeric brushes

The design of nano-functionalised membranes or channels, able to effectively adsorb pollutants in aqueous solutions, is a topic that is gaining a great deal of attention in the materials science community. With this work we explore, through a combination of scaling theories and molecular dynamics simulations, the adsorption of spherical non-deformable colloidal nanoparticles within planar polymeric brushes. Our strategy is twofold: first, we generalise the Alexander-de Gennes theory for planar homopolymeric brushes to the case of diblock copolymer brushes, then we map the adsorbing homopolymeric brushes onto a diblock copolymer system, where the adsorbed colloids and all interacting monomers are considered monomers in bad solvent and we apply the generalised scaling theory to this effective diblock copolymer. This allows the prediction of the average conformation of the grafted substrate, i.e. its average height, as a function of the amount of loaded particles, as well as the introduction of a continuous mapping between a homopolymeric brush, the fraction of loaded particles and the average height of the adsorbing substrate.

Threshold of Surface Initiator Concentration for Polymer Brush Growth by Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

The surface modification of various materials by grafting functional molecules has attracted much attention from fundamental research to practical applications because of its ability to impart various physical and chemical properties to the surfaces. One promising approach is the use of polymer brushes synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from surface-tethered initiators (SIs). In this study, for the purpose of controlling the grafting amounts/densities of polymer brushes, we developed a facile method to precisely regulate SI concentrations of SI layers (SILs) by serial dilution based on a sol-gel method. By simply mixing organosilanes terminated with and without an initiator group ((p-chloromethyl) phenyltrimethoxysilane (CMPTMS) and phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS), respectively) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), SI concentrations of SILs could be arbitrarily tuned precisely by varying dilution factors of (CMPTMS + PTMS)/CMPTMS (DFs, 1-107). The resulting SILs prepared at different DFs were highly smooth and transparent. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also confirmed that the SIs were homogeneously distributed at the topmost surface of the SILs and their concentrations were proven to be accurately and precisely controlled from high to extremely low, comparable to theoretical values. Subsequent SI-ATRP in air ("paint-on" SI-ATRP) of two different types of monomers (hydrophobic/nonionic (2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) and hydrophilic/ionic (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) demonstrated that polymer brushes with different grafting amounts/densities were successfully grafted only from SILs with DFs of 1-104 (theoretical SI concentrations: 3.9 × 10-4 ∼ 3.5 units/nm2), while at DFs of 105 and above (theoretical SI concentrations: <3.9 × 10-5 units/nm2), no sign of polymer brush growth was confirmed by thickness, XPS, and water contact angle data. Therefore, we are the first to gather evidence that the approximate threshold of SI concentration required for "paint-on" SI-ATRP might be on the order of 10-4 ∼ 10-5 units/nm2.

Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes as Flocculants and Retention Aids in Wet-End Papermaking

As the criteria of energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection become more important, and with the development of wet-end papermaking, developing excellent retention aids is of great significance. Spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) bearing polyelectrolyte chains grafted densely to the surface of core particle have the potential to be novel retention aids in wet-end papermaking not only because of their spherical structure, but also due to controllable grafting density and molecular weight. Such characteristics are crucial in order to design multi-functional retention aids in sophisticated papermaking systems. This review presents some important recent advances with respect to retention aids, including single-component system and dual-component systems. Then, basic theory in papermaking is also briefly reviewed. Based on these advances, it emphatically describes spherical polyelectrolyte brushes, focused on their preparation methods, characterization, conformation, and applications in papermaking. This work is expected to contribute to improve a comprehensive understanding on the composition, properties, and function mechanisms of retention aids, which helps in the further investigation on the design of novel retention aids with excellent performance.

The interplay of nuclear pores and lipids

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) mediate the bidirectional transport of cargo across the nuclear envelope (NE). NPCs are also membrane remodeling machines with a capacity to curve and fuse the membranes of the NE. However, little is known about the interplay of NPCs and lipids at a mechanistic level. A full understanding of NPC structure and function needs to encompass how the NPC shapes membranes and is itself shaped by lipids. Here we attempt to connect recent findings in NPC research with the broader field of membrane biochemistry to illustrate how an interplay between NPCs and lipids may facilitate the conformational plasticity of NPCs and the generation of a unique pore membrane topology. We highlight the need to better understand the NPC's lipid environment and outline experimental avenues towards that goal.

Recent advances on waste tires: bibliometric analysis, processes, and waste management approaches

End of life tires (ELTs) are a pressing environmental concern due to their non-biodegradable nature and potential release of toxic chemicals, as confirmed by human health exposure studies. The expanding transport sector, driven by the automotive industry, has led to inadequate attention to safe tire disposal. This review extracted papers using keywords such as "waste tire rubber," "waste tire pollution," and "waste tire applications" from 2012 to 2023. Recycling publications have surged by 80% in the past decade, with China and the USA leading the research. Pyrolysis and devulcanization methods have emerged as key circular economy (CE) advancements, producing fuel and reusable rubber. Globally, 1.5 billion waste tires accumulate yearly, projected to increase by 70% in the next 30 years if unaddressed. Around 26 million tonnes of used tires are generated annually worldwide, while civil engineering and backfilling use 17 million tonnes of recycled rubber particles. These tires are complex polymer composites, primarily composed of natural and synthetic rubber. The amorphous nature of rubber results in a 50% loss of mechanical properties when exposed to chemicals and microbes, shortening its lifespan. This paper explores the applicability of waste tire rubber and polymer fabrication to offer eco-friendly and cost-effective solutions for proper disposal, mitigating environmental accumulation.

Swelling and Orientation Behavior of End-Grafted Polymer Chains by In Situ Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Complementing In Situ Ellipsometry

The literature lacks established concrete parameters for assigning grafted chain regimes. In this context, dichroic in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and in situ ellipsometry were used complementarily, offering new opportunities for conformational analysis of end-grafted polymer chains. Especially polymer chain orientation was studied as a new parameter, among others, for proper chain regime assignment in this report. Alkyne-functionalized poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) with a molecular weight of 49.8 kg/mol and a contour length of around 80 nm was grafted to self-assembled monolayers bearing triazole end groups as reported. Different chain regimes were generated by using three different grafting densities. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy based on the ν(C═O) stretching vibration at around 1728 cm-1 provided a new direct approach to determine the GD of polymer chains. Significant shifts in the position of the ν(C═O) band comparing dry and wet states were observed, caused by increased hydrogen bonding interactions between PDMAEMA and water. Finally, the averaged orientation of PDMAEMA chains along the z-axis was determined using dichroic ATR-FTIR spectroscopy based on the dichroic ratios of the ν(C═O) band and molecular order parameters SZ,MOL calculated thereof. High SZ,MOL values were found for the wet state compared to the dry state, confirming that all GD PDMAEMA samples are in the brush regime in the swollen state.

Fluorine-Free Extinguishing of a Hydrocarbon Pool Fire with a Suspension of Glass Bubbles Grafted with Nanoscale Polymer Layers

The current most efficient solution to extinguish liquid hydrocarbon (class B) pool fires involves fire-fighting foams containing fluorinated surfactants. However, fluorocarbon surfactants are unsafe due to their environmental persistence and negative toxicological/bioaccumulative impact. To this end, we show that fluorine-free aqueous suspensions of Glass Bubbles (GB) modified with hydrophilic polymer grafted layers can efficiently extinguish hydrocarbon pool fires. Namely, GB grafted with poly(oligo (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA), GB-G was fabricated employing "grafting-through" and "grafting-from" methods and used to obtain the suspensions. It was found that the GB suspension, with a grafted layer of higher molecular weight and lower grafting density (GB-GL), proved superior to the more densely grafted GB-GH and nongrafted GB-0 system. The GB-GL suspensions displayed less negative spreading coefficients and viscosities lower than those of GB-GH/GB-0 compositions. When siloxane-polyoxyethylene surfactant was added to all GB suspensions, the interfacial properties were dominated by the surfactant, with all suspensions having the same positive spreading coefficient. However, the GB-GL-surfactant composition had the lowest viscosity among the suspensions studied in this work. Specifically, the viscosity of GB-GH and GB-0 suspensions at a shear rate of 77 s-1 was ∼110% and 70% higher than that of GB-GL. Due to the lower viscosity, the GB-GL suspension demonstrated the most efficient spreading over model hydrocarbon solid (polyethylene) and liquid (hexadecane) surfaces when the surfactant was added. The suspension also showed the best performance in the retardation of hexane evaporation when placed over the heated hexane pool. After 50 min, the amount of hexane that evaporated through GB-GH and GB-0 suspensions was ∼8 and 11 times higher, respectively, compared to the GB-GL suspension. We found that the GB-GL-surfactant system was the most efficient GB suspension in extinguishing the fire due to its superior spreading and sealing ability. It was within 10% of fluorine-containing foam's fire extinguishment performance. The GB suspensions are much safer in terms of burnback resistance as a torch applied directly to the suspension after extinguishment could not reignite the fire. The GB material is recyclable, since it can be collected and reused after application to a fire.

Wetting Behavior of A-block-(B-random-C) Copolymers with Equal Block Surface Energies on Surfaces Functionalized with B-random-C Copolymers

To form nanopatterns with self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs), it is desirable to have through-film domains that are oriented perpendicular to the substrate. The domain orientation is determined by the interfacial interactions of the BCP domains with the substrate and with the free surface. Here, we use thin films of two different sets of BCPs with A-block-(B-random-C) architecture matched with a corresponding B-random-C copolymer nanocoating on the substrate to demonstrate two distinct wetting behaviors. The two sets of A-b-(B-r-C) BCPs are made by using thiol-epoxy click chemistry to functionalize polystyrene-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with trifluoroethanethiol (TFET) and either 2-mercaptopyridine (2MP) or methyl thioglycolate (MTG). For each set of BCPs, the composition ratio of the two thiols in the BCP (φ1) is found that results in the two blocks of the modified BCP having equal surface energies (Δγair = 0). The corresponding B-r-C random copolymers were synthesized and used to modify the substrate, and the composition ratio (φ2) values that resulted in the two blocks of the BCP having equal interfacial energy with the substrate (Δγsub = 0) were determined with scanning electron microscopy. The correlation between each block's γsub value and the interaction parameter, χ, is employed to explain the different wetting behaviors of the two sets of BCPs. For the thiol pair 2MP and TFET, the values of φ1 and φ2 that lead to Δγair = 0 and Δγsub = 0, respectively, are significantly different. A similar difference was observed between the φ1 and φ2 values that lead to Δγair = 0 and Δγsub = 0 for the BCPs made with the thiol pair MTG and TFET. In the latter case, for Δγsub = 0 two windows of φ2 are identified, which can be explained by the thermodynamic interactions of the specific thiol pair and the A-b-(B-r-C) architecture.

Reentrant DNA shells tune polyphosphate condensate size

The ancient, inorganic biopolymer polyphosphate (polyP) occurs in all three domains of life and affects myriad cellular processes. An intriguing feature of polyP is its frequent proximity to chromatin, and in the case of many bacteria, its occurrence in the form of magnesium-enriched condensates embedded in the nucleoid, particularly in response to stress. The physical basis of the interaction between polyP and DNA, two fundamental anionic biopolymers, and the resulting effects on the organization of both the nucleoid and polyP condensates remain poorly understood. Given the essential role of magnesium ions in the coordination of polymeric phosphate species, we hypothesized that a minimal system of polyP, magnesium ions, and DNA (polyP-Mg2+-DNA) would capture key features of the interplay between the condensates and bacterial chromatin. We find that DNA can profoundly affect polyP-Mg2+ coacervation even at concentrations several orders of magnitude lower than found in the cell. The DNA forms shells around polyP-Mg2+ condensates and these shells show reentrant behavior, primarily forming in the concentration range close to polyP-Mg2+ charge neutralization. This surface association tunes both condensate size and DNA morphology in a manner dependent on DNA properties, including length and concentration. Our work identifies three components that could form the basis of a central and tunable interaction hub that interfaces with cellular interactors. These studies will inform future efforts to understand the basis of polyP granule composition and consolidation, as well as the potential capacity of these mesoscale assemblies to remodel chromatin in response to diverse stressors at different length and time scales.

Scalable Air-Tolerant μL-Volume Synthesis of Thick Poly(SPMA) Brushes Using SI-ARGET-ATRP

We present a facile procedure for preparing thick (up to 300 nm) poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) brushes using SI-ARGET-ATRP by conducting the reaction in a fluid film between the substrate and a coverslip. This method is advantageous in a number of ways: it does not require deoxygenation of the reaction solution, and the monomer conversion is much higher than usual since only a minimal amount of solution (microliters) is used, resulting in a tremendous reduction (∼50×) of wasted reagents. Moreover, this method is particularly suitable for grafting brushes to large substrates.

Supramolecular Polymer Brushes Grown by Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization from Cucurbit[7]uril-based Non-Covalent Initiators

Polymer brushes are densely grafted, chain end-tethered assemblies of polymers that can be produced via surface-initiated polymerization. Typically, this is accomplished using initiators or chain transfer agents that are covalently attached to the substrate. This manuscript reports an alternative route towards polymer brushes, which involves the use of non-covalent cucurbit[7]uril-adamantane host-guest interactions to surface-immobilize initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization. These non-covalent initiators can be used for the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of a variety of water-soluble methacrylate monomers to generate supramolecular polymer brushes with film thicknesses of more than 100 nm. The non-covalent nature of the initiator also allows facile access to patterned polymer brushes, which can be produced in straightforward fashion by drop-casting a solution of the initiator-modified guest molecules onto a substrate that presents the cucurbit[7]uril host.

Synthesis of Stable Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Coated with Phosphonic Acid-Based Functional Polymers

Functional polymers, such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), terminated with a single phosphonic acid, hereafter PEG_ik-Ph are often applied to coat metal oxide surfaces during post-synthesis steps but are not sufficient to stabilize sub-10 nm particles in protein-rich biofluids. The instability is attributed to the weak binding affinity of post-grafted phosphonic acid groups, resulting in a gradual detachment of the polymers from the surface. Here, we assess these polymers as coating agents using an alternative route, namely, the one-step wet-chemical synthesis, where PEG_ik-Ph is introduced with cerium precursors during the synthesis. Characterization of the coated cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) indicates a core-shell structure, where the cores are 3 nm cerium oxide and the shell consists of functionalized PEG polymers in a brush configuration. Results show that CNPs coated with PEG_1k-Ph and PEG_2k-Ph are of potential interest for applications as nanomedicines due to their high Ce(III) content and increased colloidal stability in cell culture media. We further demonstrate that the CNPs in the presence of hydrogen peroxide show an additional absorbance band in the UV-vis spectrum, which is attributed to Ce-O₂^2- peroxo-complexes and could be used in the evaluation of their catalytic activity for scavenging reactive oxygen species.

Globular Proteins and Where to Find Them within a Polymer Brush-A Case Study

Protein adsorption by polymerized surfaces is an interdisciplinary topic that has been approached in many ways, leading to a plethora of theoretical, numerical and experimental insight. There is a wide variety of models trying to accurately capture the essence of adsorption and its effect on the conformations of proteins and polymers. However, atomistic simulations are case-specific and computationally demanding. Here, we explore universal aspects of the dynamics of protein adsorption through a coarse-grained (CG) model, that allows us to explore the effects of various design parameters. To this end, we adopt the hydrophobic-polar (HP) model for proteins, place them uniformly at the upper bound of a CG polymer brush whose multibead-spring chains are tethered to a solid implicit wall. We find that the most crucial factor affecting the adsorption efficiency appears to be the polymer grafting density, while the size of the protein and its hydrophobicity ratio come also into play. We discuss the roles of ligands and attractive tethering surfaces to the primary adsorption as well as secondary and ternary adsorption in the presence of attractive (towards the hydrophilic part of the protein) beads along varying spots of the backbone of the polymer chains. The percentage and rate of adsorption, density profiles and the shapes of the proteins, alongside with the respective potential of mean force are recorded to compare the various scenarios during protein adsorption.

Dynamic wetting properties of PDMS pseudo-brushes: Four-phase contact point dynamics case

We investigate the wetting properties of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) pseudo-brush anchored on glass substrates. These PDMS pseudo-brushes exhibit a significantly lower contact angle hysteresis compared to hydrophobic silanized substrates. The effect of different molar masses of the used PDMS on the wetting properties seems negligible. The surface roughness and thickness of the PDMS pseudo-brush are measured by atomic force microscopy and x-ray reflectivity. The outcome shows that these surfaces are extremely smooth (topologically and chemically), which explains the reduction in contact angle hysteresis. These special features make this kind of surfaces very useful for wetting experiments. Here, the dynamics of the four-phase contact point are studied on these surfaces. The four-phase contact point dynamics on PDMS pseudo-brushes deviate substantially from its dynamics on other substrates. These changes depend only a little on the molar mass of the used PDMS. In general, PDMS pseudo-brushes increase the traveling speed of four-phase contact point on the surface and change the associated power law of position vs time.

Dynamic molecular mechanism of the nuclear pore complex permeability barrier

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) mediate nucleocytoplasmic transport of specific macromolecules while impeding the exchange of unsolicited material. However, key aspects of this gating mechanism remain controversial. To address this issue, we determined the nanoscopic behavior of the permeability barrier directly within yeast S. cerevisiae NPCs at transport-relevant timescales. We show that the large intrinsically disordered domains of phenylalanine-glycine repeat nucleoporins (FG Nups) exhibit highly dynamic fluctuations to create transient voids in the permeability barrier that continuously shape-shift and reseal, resembling a radial polymer brush. Together with cargo-carrying transport factors the FG domains form a feature called the central plug, which is also highly dynamic. Remarkably, NPC mutants with longer FG domains show interweaving meshwork-like behavior that attenuates nucleocytoplasmic transport in vivo. Importantly, the bona fide nanoscale NPC behaviors and morphologies are not recapitulated by in vitro FG domain hydrogels. NPCs also exclude self-assembling FG domain condensates in vivo, thereby indicating that the permeability barrier is not generated by a self-assembling phase condensate, but rather is largely a polymer brush, organized by the NPC scaffold, whose dynamic gating selectivity is strongly enhanced by the presence of transport factors.

Thermal and Bulk Properties of Triblock Terpolymers and Modified Derivatives towards Novel Polymer Brushes

We report the synthesis of three (3) linear triblock terpolymers, two (2) of the ABC type and one (1) of the BAC type, where A, B and C correspond to three chemically incompatible blocks such as polystyrene (PS), poly(butadiene) of exclusively (~100% vinyl-type) -1,2 microstructure (PB_1,2) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) respectively. Living anionic polymerization enabled the synthesis of narrowly dispersed terpolymers with low average molecular weights and different composition ratios, as verified by multiple molecular characterization techniques. To evaluate their self-assembly behavior, transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments were conducted, indicating the effect of asymmetric compositions and interactions as well as inversed segment sequence on the adopted morphologies. Furthermore, post-polymerization chemical modification reactions such as hydroboration and oxidation were carried out on the extremely low molecular weight PB_1,2 in all three terpolymer samples. To justify the successful incorporation of -OH groups in the polydiene segments and the preparation of polymeric brushes, various molecular, thermal, and surface analysis measurements were carried out. The synthesis and chemical modification reactions on such triblock terpolymers are performed for the first time to the best of our knowledge and constitute a promising route to design polymers for nanotechnology applications.

Swelling and shrinking of two opposing polyelectrolyte brushes

Salt concentration and confinement effects affect the configuration of polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes due to electrostatic interactions. In this work, we develop a new theoretical model to analyze the electrostatics and swelling-shrinking behavior of two opposing PE brushes. By comparing three length scales, i.e., equilibrium brush height, separation distance, and Debye length, we obtain distinct scaling laws for brush height in different regimes. We provide explanations for the anomalous shrinkage of the PE brush with added salt reported in experiments and simulations, the applicability of the homogeneous brush assumption, and the confinement effect on the brush height. Our model can be used to shed light on the configuration and functionalities of PE-grafted interfaces, which play important roles in ion selective membranes and organism lubrication. We also anticipate that our method will be useful to understand the functionalities of other charged soft matter systems, such as hydrogel swelling and colloidal stability.

The Influence of Constraints on Gelation in a Controlling/Living Copolymerization Process

We developed a simple model of the copolymerization process in the formation of crosslinked macromolecular systems. A living copolymerization was carried out for free chains, in bulk and in a slit, as well as for grafted chains in a slit. In addition, polymer 2D brushes were placed in a slit with initiator molecules attached to one of the confining walls. Coarse-grained chains were embedded in the vertices of a face-centered cubic lattice with the excluded volume interactions. The simulations of the copolymerization processes were performed using the Dynamic Lattice Liquid algorithm, a version of the Monte Carlo method. The influence of the initial initiator to cross-linker ratio, slit width and grafting on the polymerization and on the gelation was examined. It was also shown that the influence of a confining slit was rather small, while the grafting of chains affected the location of the gel pint significantly.

Polymer Grafting and its chemical reactions

Shear-Stable Polymer Brush Surfaces

Research on polymer brushes (PBs) has aroused great interest due to their wide range of applications in lubrication, antifogging, antifouling, self-cleaning, antiadhesion, antibacterial effects, and so forth. However, the weak mechanical strength, especially the low bond strength between the PBs and the substrate surface, is a long-standing challenge for its practical applications, which is directly related to the service life of the PB surface. Fortunately, the imperfection of the PB surface was gradually solved by researchers by combining the action of the chemical and physical anchoring strength, and many shear-stable PB surfaces were developed. In this Perspective, we present recent developments in the studies of shear-stable PBs. Conventional strategies that altered the structure of PB chain methods, including increasing grafted density, cross-linking of PBs, cyclic PBs, and so forth, are introduced briefly. The systematic subsurface grafting of the polymer brush (SSPB) strategy was introduced emphatically. The SSPB method grafted PB into the subsurface with considerable depth and gave a robust and reusable PB layer, which provided an approach for tackling the shear-resistance issue. Besides, the robust hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) brush surface that lubricated itself in air was also introduced. Finally, we provide a synopsis and discuss the outlook of the shear-stable PB surface.

Phase separation in polymer-based biomimetic structures containing planar membranes

Phase separation in biological membranes is crucial for proper cellular functions, such as signaling and trafficking, as it mediates the interactions of condensates on membrane-bound organelles and transmembrane transport to targeted destination compartments. The separation of a lipid bilayer into phases and the formation of lipid rafts involve the restructuring of molecular localization, their immobilization, and local accumulation. By understanding the processes underlying the formation of lipid rafts in a cellular membrane, it is possible to reconstitute this phenomenon in synthetic biomimetic membranes, such as hybrids of lipids and polymers or membranes composed solely of polymers, which offer an increased physicochemical stability and unlimited possibilities of chemical modification and functionalization. In this article, we relate the main lipid bilayer phase transition phenomenon with respect to hybrid biomimetic membranes, composed of lipids mixed with polymers, and fully synthetic membranes. Following, we review the occurrence of phase separation in biomimetic hybrid membranes based on lipids and/or direct lipid analogs, amphiphilic block copolymers. We further exemplify the phase separation and the resulting properties and applications in planar membranes, free-standing and solid-supported. We briefly list methods leading to the formation of such biomimetic membranes and reflect on their improved overall stability and influence on the separation into different phases within the membranes. Due to the importance of phase separation and compartmentalization in cellular membranes, we are convinced that this compiled overview of this phenomenon will be helpful for any researcher in the biomimicry area.

Cell-Derived Vesicles with Increased Stability and On-Demand Functionality by Equipping Their Membrane with a Cross-Linkable Copolymer

Cell-derived vesicles retain the cytoplasm and much of the native cell membrane composition. Therefore, they are attractive for investigations of membrane biophysics, drug delivery systems, and complex molecular factories. However, their fragility and aggregation limit their applications. Here, the mechanical properties and stability of giant plasma membrane vesicles (GPMVs) are enhanced by decorating them with a specifically designed diblock copolymer, cholesteryl-poly[2-aminoethyl methacrylate-b-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate]. When cross-linked, this polymer brush enhances the stability of the GPMVs. Furthermore, the pH-responsiveness of the copolymer layer allows for a controlled cargo loading/release, which may enable various bioapplications. Importantly, the cross-linked-copolymer GPMVs are not cytotoxic and preserve in vitro membrane integrity and functionality. This effective strategy to equip the cell-derived vesicles with stimuli-responsive cross-linkable copolymers is expected to open a new route to the stabilization of natural membrane systems and overcome barriers to biomedical applications.

Surface antimicrobial functionalization with polymers: fabrication, mechanisms and applications

Undesirable adhesion of microbes such as bacteria, fungi and viruses onto surfaces affects many industries such as marine, food, textile, and healthcare. In particular in healthcare and food packaging, the effects of unwanted microbial contamination can be life-threatening. With the current global COVID-19 pandemic, interest in the development of surfaces with superior anti-viral and anti-bacterial activities has multiplied. Polymers carrying anti-microbial properties are extensively used to functionalize material surfaces to inactivate infection-causing and biocide-resistant microbes including COVID-19. This review aims to introduce the fabrication of polymer-based antimicrobial surfaces through physical and chemical modifications, followed by the discussion of the inactivation mechanisms of conventional biocidal agents and new-generation antimicrobial macromolecules in polymer-modified antimicrobial surfaces. The advanced applications of polymer-based antimicrobial surfaces on personal protective equipment against COVID-19, food packaging materials, biomedical devices, marine vessels and textiles are also summarized to express the research trend in academia and industry.

Nanoarchitectonics beyond perfect order - not quite perfect but quite useful

Nanoarchitectonics, like architectonics, allows the design and building of structures, but at the nanoscale. Unlike those in architectonics, and even macro-, micro-, and atomic-scale architectonics, the assembled structures at the nanoscale do not always follow the projected design. In fact, they do follow the projected design but only for self-assembly processes producing structures with perfect order. Here, we look at nanoarchitectonics allowing the building of nanostructures without a perfect arrangement of building blocks. Here, fabrication of structures from molecules, polymers, nanoparticles, and nanosheets to polymer brushes, layer-by-layer assembly structures, and hydrogels through self-assembly processes is discussed, where perfect order is not necessarily the aim to be achieved. Both planar substrate and spherical template-based assemblies are discussed, showing the challenging nature of research in this field and the usefulness of such structures for numerous applications, which are also discussed here.

Advances in design of polymer brush functionalized inorganic nanomaterials and their applications in biomedical arena

Grafting of polymer brush (assembly of polymer chains tethered to the substrate by one end) is emerging as one of the most viable approach to alter the surface of inorganic nanomaterials. Inorganic nanomaterials despite their intrinsic functional superiority, their applications remain restricted due to their incompatibility with organic or biological moieties vis-à-vis agglomeration issues. To overcome such a shortcoming, polymer brush modified surfaces of inorganic nanomaterials have lately proved to be of immense potential. For example, polymer brush-modified inorganic nanomaterials can act as efficient substrates/platforms in biomedical applications, ranging from drug-delivery to protein-array due to their integrated advantages such as amphiphilicity, stimuli responsiveness, enhanced biocompatibility, and so on. In this review, the current state of the art related to polymer brush-modified inorganic nanomaterials focusing, not only, on their synthetic strategies and applications in biomedical field but also the architectural influence of polymer brushes on the responsiveness properties of modified nanomaterials have comprehensively been discussed and its associated future perspective is also presented. “Clickable” Polymer Brush Interfaces: Tailoring Monovalent to Multivalent Ligand Display for Protein Immobilization and Sensing

Facile and effective functionalization of the interface of polymer-coated surfaces allows one to dictate the interaction of the underlying material with the chemical and biological analytes in its environment. Herein, we outline a modular approach that would enable installing a variety of “clickable” handles onto the surface of polymer brushes, enabling facile conjugation of various ligands to obtain functional interfaces. To this end, hydrophilic anti-biofouling poly(ethylene glycol)-based polymer brushes are fabricated on glass-like silicon oxide surfaces using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The dithioester group at the chain-end of the polymer brushes enabled the installation of azide, maleimide, and terminal alkene functional groups, using a post-polymerization radical exchange reaction with appropriately functionalized azo-containing molecules. Thus, modified polymer brushes underwent facile conjugation of alkyne or thiol-containing dyes and ligands using alkyne–azide cycloaddition, Michael addition, and radical thiol–ene conjugation, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the radical exchange approach also enables the installation of multivalent motifs using dendritic azo-containing molecules. Terminal alkene groups containing dendrons amenable to functionalization with thiol-containing molecules using the radical thiol–ene reaction were installed at the interface and subsequently functionalized with mannose ligands to enable sensing of the Concanavalin A lectin.

Karyotype engineering reveals spatio-temporal control of replication firing and gene contacts

Eukaryotic genomes vary in terms of size, chromosome number, and genetic complexity. Their temporal organization is complex, reflecting coordination between DNA folding and function. Here, we used fused karyotypes of budding yeast to characterize the effects of chromosome length on nuclear architecture. We found that size-matched megachromosomes expand to occupy a larger fraction of the enlarged nucleus. Hi-C maps reveal changes in the three-dimensional structure corresponding to inactivated centromeres and telomeres. De-clustering of inactive centromeres results in their loss of early replication, highlighting a functional correlation between genome organization and replication timing. Repositioning of former telomere-proximal regions on chromosome arms exposed a subset of contacts between flocculin genes. Chromatin reorganization of megachromosomes during cell division remained unperturbed, and it revealed that centromere-rDNA contacts in anaphase, extending over 0.3 Mb on wild-type chromosome, cannot exceed ∼1.7 Mb. Our results highlight the relevance of engineered karyotypes to unveiling relationships between genome organization and function.

Polymer brush-based nanostructures: from surface self-assembly to surface co-assembly

Surface structures play an important role in the practical applications of materials. The synthesis of polymer brushes on a solid surface has emerged as an effective tool for tuning surface properties. The fabrication of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures has greatly facilitated the development of materials with unique surface properties. In this review article, synthetic methods used in the synthesis of polymer brushes, and self-assembly approaches applied in the fabrication of surface nanostructures including self-assembly of polymer brushes, co-assembly of polymer brushes and "free" block copolymer chains, and polymerization induced surface self-assembly, are reviewed. It is demonstrated that polymer brush-based surface nanostructures, including spherical surface micelles, wormlike surface structures, layered structures and surface vesicles, can be fabricated. Meanwhile, the challenges in the synthesis and applications of the surface nanostructures are discussed. This review is expected to be helpful for understanding the principles, methods and applications of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures.

Multicomponent Copolymer Planar Membranes with Nanoscale Domain Separation

Domain separation is crucial for proper cellular function and numerous biomedical technologies, especially artificial cells. While phase separation in hybrid membranes containing lipids and copolymers is well-known, the membranes' overall stability, limited by the lipid part, is hindering the technological applications. Here, we introduce a fully synthetic planar membrane undergoing phase separation into domains embedded within a continuous phase. The mono- and bilayer membranes are composed of two amphiphilic diblock copolymers (PEO₄₅-b-PEHOx₂₀ and PMOXA₁₀-b-PDMS₂₅) with distinct properties and mixed at various concentrations. The molar ratio of the copolymers in the mixture and the nature of the solid support were the key parameters inducing nanoscale phase separation of the planar membranes. The size of the domains and resulting morphology of the nanopatterned surfaces were tailored by adjusting the molar ratios of the copolymers and transfer conditions. Our approach opens new avenues for the development of biomimetic planar membranes with a nanoscale texture.

Chemistry and engineering of brush type polymers: Perspective towards tissue engineering

In tissue engineering, it is imperative to control the behaviour of cells/stem cells, such as adhesion, proliferation, propagation, motility, and differentiation for tissue regeneration. Surfaces that allow cells to behave in this way are critical as support materials in tissue engineering. Among these surfaces, brush-type polymers have an important potential for tissue engineering and biomedical applications. Brush structure and length, end groups, bonding densities, hydrophilicity, surface energy, structural flexibility, thermal stability, surface chemical reactivity, rheological and tribological properties, electron and energy transfer ability, cell binding and absorption abilities for various biological molecules of brush-type polymers were increased its importance in tissue engineering applications. In addition, thanks to these functional properties and adjustable surface properties, brush type polymers are used in different high-tech applications such as electronics, sensors, anti-fouling, catalysis, purification and energy etc. This review comprehensively highlights the use of brush-type polymers in tissue engineering applications. Considering the superior properties of brush-type polymer structures, it is believed that in the future, it will be an effective tool in structure designs containing many different biomolecules (enzymes, proteins, etc.) in the field of tissue engineering.

Fundamentals and Applications of Polymer Brushes in Air

For several decades, high-density, end-tethered polymers, forming so-called polymer brushes, have inspired scientists to understand their properties and to translate them to applications. While earlier research focused on polymer brushes in liquids, it was recently recognized that these brushes can find application in air as well. In this review, we report on recent progress in unraveling fundamental concepts of brushes in air, such as their vapor-swelling and solvent partitioning. Moreover, we provide an overview of the plethora of applications in air (e.g., in sensing, separations or smart adhesives) where brushes can be key components. To conclude, we provide an outlook by identifying open questions and issues that, when solved, will pave the way for the large scale application of brushes in air.

Versatile Coating Platform for Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Applications to Materials and Biological Science

In this feature article, we provide an overview of our research on statistical copolymers as a coating material for metal oxide nanoparticles and surfaces. These copolymers contain functional groups enabling noncovalent binding to oxide surfaces and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers for colloidal stability and stealthiness. The functional groups are organic derivatives of phosphorous acid compounds R-H₂PO₃, also known as phosphonic acids that have been screened for their strong affinity to metals and for their multidentate binding ability. Herein we develop a polymer-based coating platform that shares features with the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and layer-by-layer (L-b-L) deposition techniques. The milestones of this endeavor are the synthesis of PEG-based copolymers containing multiple phosphonic acid groups, the implementation of simple protocols combining versatility with high particle production yields, and the experimental evidence of the colloidal stability of the coated particles. As a demonstration, coating studies are conducted on cerium (CeO₂), iron (γ-Fe₂O₃), aluminum (Al₂O₃), and titanium (TiO₂) oxides of different sizes and morphologies. We finally discuss applications in the domain of nanomaterials and nanomedicine. We evaluate the beneficial effects of coatings on redispersible nanopowders, contrast agents for in vitro/vivo assays, and stimuli-responsive particles.
