Record of microplastic deposition revealed by ornithogenic soil and sediment profiles from Ross Island, Antarctica

Microplastics (MPs) are a global concern as an emerging pollutant, and the investigation on MPs in Antarctic aids in informing their global pollution assessments. Therefore, there are urgent scientific concerns regarding the environmental behavior, origins, influencing factors, and potential hazards of MPs in Antarctica. This study presents the characteristics of MPs from one ornithogenic sediment profile (coded CC) and two ornithogenic soil profiles (coded MR1 and MR2) from ice-free areas on Ross Island, Antarctica. We explored the potential sources of MPs and the main influencing factors for deposition based on their distribution with depth in the profiles. Through laser-infrared imaging spectroscopy (LDIR), a total of 30 polymer types were identified in all samples, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the dominant types, accounting for more than 70% of the total. The abundance of MPs in the CC sediment profile ranged from 2.83 to 394.18 items/g, while in MR1 and MR2 soil profiles, the abundance ranged from 2.25 to 1690.11 and 8.24 to 168.27 items/g, respectively. The size of MPs was mainly concentrated in the range of 20-50 μm, and possible downward movement of certain polymer types was revealed. From the perspective of temporal variation, we suggest that MPs were heavily influenced by local human activities including scientific research, fishing, and tourism, balanced by protective regulations, while no solid evidence was obtained to support strong influence from biological transport through penguins. This research enhances our understanding on the environmental behavior of MPs in the terrestrial systems of remote polar regions.

Rational Design of Highly Comprehensive Liquid-Like Coatings with Enhanced Transparency, Concerted Multi-Function, and Excellent Durability: A Ternary Cooperative Strategy

Durable repellent surfaces of high transparency find key applications in daily life and industry. Nevertheless, developing anti-reflective coatings with omni-repellency, concerted multi-function, and desirable durability remains a daunting challenge. Here, a highly comprehensive coating is designed based on the combination of structural design and molecular design. The resulting silica hybrid coating not only manifests enhanced transparency and exceptional omniphobicity, but also achieves integration of multi-function (e.g., anti-smudge, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion). The unprecedented durability of the coating is evidenced by maintaining slipperiness after rigorous treatments, such as 2.5 × 105-cycle mechanical abrasion with a high loading pressure of 100 kPa, 1000-cycle adhesion/peeling and soaking in extreme pH solutions, etc. This work provides a design blueprint for manufacturing versatile and durable coatings for wide-ranging applications.

Dual Photoredox/Nickel-Catalyzed Dehydrative Difluoroalkylation of Benzyl Alcohols for the Synthesis of Allylic gem-Difluorides

A photoredox/Lewis acid cooperative catalytic system has been developed for the construction of Cvinyl-CRf bonds through the dehydrative difluoroalkylation of benzyl alcohols. A variety of allylic gem-difluorides could be obtained in moderate yields with good to excellent E/Z selectivity. In addition, several control experiments have been explored, and a possible mechanism was proposed for this process.

Intrinsically elastic polymer ferroelectric by precise slight cross-linking

Ferroelectrics are an integral component of the modern world and are of importance in electrics, electronics, and biomedicine. However, their usage in emerging wearable electronics is limited by inelastic deformation. We developed intrinsically elastic ferroelectrics by combining ferroelectric response and elastic resilience into one material by slight cross-linking of plastic ferroelectric polymers. The precise slight cross-linking can realize the complex balance between crystallinity and resilience. Thus, we obtained an elastic ferroelectric with a stable ferroelectric response under mechanical deformation up to 70% strain. This elastic ferroelectric exerts potentials in applications related to wearable electronics, such as elastic ferroelectric sensors, information storage, and energy transduction.

Are (Co)Polymers of 1,1,3,3,3-Pentafluoropropene Possible?

The copolymerization and terpolymerization of 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene (PFP) with various combinations of fluorinated and hydrogenated comonomers were investigated. The chosen fluoromonomers were vinylidene fluoride (VDF), 3,3,3-trifluoropropene (TFP), hexafluoropropene (HFP), perfluoromethylvinyl ether (PMVE), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and tert-butyl-2-trifluoromethacrylate (MAF-TBE), while the hydrocarbon comonomers were vinylene carbonate (VCA), ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) and 3-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (m-TMI). Copolymers of PFP with non-homopolymerizable monomers (HFP, PMVE and MAF-TBE) led to quite low yields, while the introduction of VDF enabled the synthesis of poly(PFP-ter-VDF-ter-M₃) terpolymers with improved yields. PFP does not homopolymerize and delays the copolymerizations. All polymers were either amorphous fluoroelastomers or fluorothermoplastics with glass transition temperatures ranging from -56 °C to +59 °C, and they exhibited good thermal stability in air.

Synthesis and Properties of the Novel High-Performance Hydroxyl-Terminated Liquid Fluoroelastomer

Functional liquid fluoroelastomers are in high demand in new energy fields. And these materials have potential applications in high-performance sealing materials and as electrode materials. In this study, a novel high-performance hydroxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer (t-HTLF) with a high fluorine content, temperature resistance, and curing efficiency was synthesised from a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), and hexafluoropylene (HFP). A carboxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer (t-CTLF) with controllable molar mass and end-group content was first prepared from a poly(VDF-ter-TFE-ter-HFP) terpolymer using a unique oxidative degradation method. Subsequently, an efficient "one-step" reduction of the carboxyl groups (COOH) in t-CTLF into hydroxyl groups (OH) was achieved via the functional-group conversion method using lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH₄) as the reductant. Thus, t-HTLF with a controllable molar mass and end-group content and highly active end groups was synthesised. Owing to the efficient curing reaction between OH and isocyanate groups (NCO), the cured t-HTLF exhibits good surface properties, thermal properties, and chemical stability. The thermal decomposition temperature (T_d) of the cured t-HTLF reaches 334 °C, and it exhibits hydrophobicity. The oxidative degradation, reduction, and curing reaction mechanisms were also determined. The effects of solvent dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time, and ratio of the reductant to the COOH content on the carboxyl conversion were also systematically investigated. An efficient reduction system comprising LiAlH₄ can not only achieve an efficient conversion of the COOH groups in t-CTLF to OH groups but also the in situ hydrogenation and addition reactions of residual double bonds (C=C) groups in the chain, such that the thermal stability and terminal activity of the product are improved while maintaining a high fluorine content.

Analysis of Thermal Degradation Kinetics of POM under Inert and Oxidizing Atmospheres and Combustion Characteristics with Flame Retardant Effects

Degradation behavior of combustible fuel is the core factor in determining combustion characteristics. To investigate the effect of ambient atmosphere on the pyrolysis process of polyoxymethylene (POM), the pyrolysis mechanism of POM was studied with thermogravimetric analyzer tests and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy tests. The activation energy, reaction model, and estimated lifetime of POM pyrolysis under different kinds of ambient gases have been estimated in this paper based on different results of the kinetics. The activation energy values, obtained with different methods, were 151.0-156.6 kJ mol^-1 in nitrogen and 80.9-127.3 kJ mol^-1 in air. Then, based on the Criado analysis, the pyrolysis reaction models of POM in nitrogen were found to be mastered by the "n + m = 2; n = 1.5" model, and by the "A3" model in air. The optimum processing temperature for POM was estimated, with a range from 250 to 300 °C in nitrogen and from 200 to 250 °C in air. IR analysis revealed that the significant difference in POM decomposition between N₂ and O₂ atmospheres is the formation of isocyanate group or carbon dioxide. Combustion parameters of two POMs (with and without flame retardants) obtained using cone calorimetry revealed that flame retardants can effectively improve the ignition time, smoke release rate, and other parameters of POM. The outcomes of this study will contribute to the design, storage, and transportation of polyoxymethylene.

Compatibility and Interaction Mechanism between the C4F7N/CO2/O2 Gas Mixture and FKM and NBR

The C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ gas mixture received a great deal of attention for its potential use in eco-friendly gas-insulated equipment (GIE). The evaluation of the compatibility between C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ and sealing rubber is necessary and significant considering the high working pressure (0.14-0.6 MPa) of GIE. Herein, we explored the compatibility between C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ and fluororubber (FKM) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) for the first time by analyzing the gas components, rubber morphology, elemental composition, and mechanical properties. The interaction mechanism of the gas-rubber interface was further investigated based on the density functional theory. We found that C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ is compatible with FKM and NBR at 85 °C, while the surface morphology changed at 100 °C, with white granular and agglomerated lumps appearing on FKM and multi-layer flakes being generated on NBR. The accumulation of the fluorine element occurred, and the compressive mechanical properties of NBR deteriorated after the gas-solid rubber interaction. Overall, the compatibility between FKM and C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ is superior, which could be employed as the sealing material for C₄F₇N-based GIE.

A critical review of the application of polymer of low concern regulatory criteria to fluoropolymers II: Fluoroplastics and fluoroelastomers

Fluoropolymers are a distinct class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), high molecular weight (MW) polymers with fluorine attached to their carbon-only backbone. Fluoropolymers possess a unique combination of properties and unmatched functional performance critical to the products and manufacturing processes they enable and are irreplaceable in many uses. Fluoropolymers have documented safety profiles; are thermally, biologically, and chemically stable, negligibly soluble in water, nonmobile, nonbioavailable, nonbioaccumulative, and nontoxic. Although fluoropolymers fit the PFAS structural definition, they have very different physical, chemical, environmental, and toxicological properties when compared with other PFAS. This study describes the composition, uses, performance properties, and functionalities of 14 fluoropolymers, including fluoroplastics and fluoroelastomers, and presents data to demonstrate that they satisfy the widely accepted polymer hazard assessment criteria to be considered polymers of low concern (PLC). The PLC criteria include physicochemical properties, such as molecular weight, which determine bioavailability and warn of potential hazard. Fluoropolymers are insoluble (e.g., water, octanol) solids too large to migrate into the cell membrane making them nonbioavailable, and therefore, of low concern from a human and environmental health standpoint. Further, the study results demonstrate that fluoropolymers are a distinct and different group of PFAS and should not be grouped with other PFAS for hazard assessment or regulatory purposes. When combined with an earlier publication by Henry et al., this study demonstrates that commercial fluoropolymers are available from the seven participating companies that meet the criteria to be considered PLC, which represent approximately 96% of the global commercial fluoropolymer market. A Comparative Study of Gamma-Ray Irradiation-Induced Oxidation: Polyethylene, Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride), and Polytetrafluoroethylene

Radiation techniques are used to modify the physical, chemical and biological properties of polymers. This induces crosslinking and degradation reactions of polymers by utilizing radicals generated through ionizing radiation. However, oxidation products (such as carbonyl) can be formed because oxidation occurs by chain scission in the presence of oxygen. Herein, we demonstrate the gamma-ray irradiation-induced oxidation with and without fluorine using polyethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene under the same conditions. In this study, changes in element-content and chemical-bond structures were analyzed before and after gamma-ray irradiation under air atmosphere. As a result, polytetrafluo-roethylene showed less oxidation and excellent thermal properties after the absorbed dose of 500 kGy. This can be attributed to the generation of stable perfluoroalkylperoxy radicals after gamma ray irradiation in the PTFE structure containing only CF2 groups, thereby hindering the oxidation reaction.

Synthesis of fluoroolefin derivatives by nickel(II)-catalyzed trifluorovinylation and 1,2,2-trifluoroethylation of cinnamyl alcohols

Nickel(II)-catalyzed regioselective trifluorovinylation and 1,2,2-trifluoroethylation of allyl alcohols with trifluorovinyl reagents were performed. The reaction of (E)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-ol and trifluorovinylzinc bromide (TFVZ) afforded 1,2,2-trifluorovinyl diene in moderate to high yields. The reaction of (E)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-ol and trifluorovinyl trimethylsilane (TFVTMS) resulted in the novel nucleophilic addition product 1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy aryl olefin.

Superior, Environmentally Tolerant, Flexible, and Adhesive Poly(ionic liquid) Gel as a Multifaceted Underwater Sensor

In recent years, gel-based sensors have been widely considered and fully developed. However, it is of vital importance, yet rather challenging to achieve a multifaceted gel, which can unify the advantages of favorable conductivity, high adhesion, excellent environmental resistance, and so forth and be applied in various harsh conditions. Herein, an ideal, extremely stable, adhesive, conductive poly(ionic liquid) gel (PILG) was designed via a one-step photoinitiated radical polymerization based on 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (VBIm-NTf₂) cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) in methyltributylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (N₁₄₄₄-NTf₂) medium. There are abundant hydrophobic butyl chains and fluorinated groups in VBIm-NTf₂ and N₁₄₄₄-NTf₂, which can impart the PILG with stable conductivity, excellent environmental tolerance, and adhesion even in water due to the ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions. The resulting PILG can be assembled as a soft and smart sensor that can be applied in specific conditions such as underwater or undersea and even in dynamic water, achieving a stable signal transmission. Meanwhile, the PILG can be utilized as a flexible electrode to convey ECG signals in air or water whether it is in the static or dynamic state. Therefore, it is envisioned that this novel PILG will serve as a hopeful electrical device for signal detection and healthy management in specific environments.

From passive to emerging smart silicones

Amassing remarkable properties, silicones are practically indispensable in our everyday life. In most classic applications, they play a passive role in that they cover, seal, insulate, lubricate, water-proof, weather-proof etc. However, silicone science and engineering are highly innovative, seeking to develop new compounds and materials that meet market demands. Thus, the unusual properties of silicones, coupled with chemical group functionalization, has allowed silicones to gradually evolve from passive materials to active ones, meeting the concept of “smart materials”, which are able to respond to external stimuli. In such cases, the intrinsic properties of polysiloxanes are augmented by various chemical modifications aiming to attach reactive or functional groups, and/or by engineering through proper cross-linking pattern or loading with suitable fillers (ceramic, magnetic, highly dielectric or electrically conductive materials, biologically active, etc.), to add new capabilities and develop high value materials. The literature and own data reflecting the state-of-the art in the field of smart silicones, such as thermoplasticity, self-healing ability, surface activity, electromechanical activity and magnetostriction, thermo-, photo-, and piezoresponsivity are reviewed.

Structure, preparation and properties of liquid fluoroelastomers with different end groups

In order to design and prepare liquid fluoroelastomers with different end groups, and reveal the relationship between the molecular chain structure and properties, we studied on the oxidation degradation method and functional group conversion method to prepare carboxyl-terminated and hydroxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomers, respectively. The reaction mechanisms were also deduced. Furthermore, the curing system was created for liquid fluoroelastomers, and systematically analyzed their properties. The sequence type and content of the -C[double bond, length as m-dash]C- and oxygen-containing groups in the samples were measured and characterized by attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), 19F-NMR spectroscopy and chemical titration, the molecular weights of liquid fluoroelastomers were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to examine the thermal properties, while a viscometer was used to measure the dynamic viscosity of the liquid fluoroelastomers. Then the mechanical and surface properties of the cured samples were examined by universal testing machine and contact angle measurement instrument, respectively. The results show that carboxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer with 2.71 wt% carboxyl terminal groups can be prepared by oxidation degradation method. When lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH4) was used as the reducing agent, it can efficiently convert carboxyl group to hydroxyl group with a conversion rate of more than 95%. In addition, it can be seen that the dynamic viscosity of the liquid fluoroelastomers were all decreased with the increase of temperature, and it is similar to about 10 Pa s at 70 °C. Compared with carboxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomers, hydroxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomers has higher curing reactivity, higher glass transition temperature (T g) and thermal decomposition temperature (T d), and better mechanical properties of cured samples. The two types of liquid fluoroelastomers with distinct end groups presented distinct hydrophilicity.

Piezoelectric Materials for Energy Harvesting and Sensing Applications: Roadmap for Future Smart Materials

Piezoelectric materials are widely referred to as "smart" materials because they can transduce mechanical pressure acting on them to electrical signals and vice versa. They are extensively utilized in harvesting mechanical energy from vibrations, human motion, mechanical loads, etc., and converting them into electrical energy for low power devices. Piezoelectric transduction offers high scalability, simple device designs, and high-power densities compared to electro-magnetic/static and triboelectric transducers. This review aims to give a holistic overview of recent developments in piezoelectric nanostructured materials, polymers, polymer nanocomposites, and piezoelectric films for implementation in energy harvesting. The progress in fabrication techniques, morphology, piezoelectric properties, energy harvesting performance, and underpinning fundamental mechanisms for each class of materials, including polymer nanocomposites using conducting, non-conducting, and hybrid fillers are discussed. The emergent application horizon of piezoelectric energy harvesters particularly for wireless devices and self-powered sensors is highlighted, and the current challenges and future prospects are critically discussed.

A highly transparent ionogel with strength enhancement ability for robust bonding in an aquatic environment

An underwater adhesive with strong, fast and stable adhesion ability has become an urgent requirement for various industrial applications. Herein, a highly transparent ionogel based on a fluorine-rich poly(ionic liquid) and the corresponding ionic liquid monomer has been developed and used as an underwater adhesive. Strong and stable underwater adhesion can be realized by taking advantage of the excellent interface adaptability and high mechanical strength of this ionogel. The underwater adhesion strength could reach as high as 5.18 ± 0.27 MPa. In addition, it can also realize robust bonding over a wide pH range (0-14). A waterproof transparent tape based on the ionogel has also been developed and it can carry out repair work in wet and aquatic environments.

Preparation and Characterization of Carborane Modified Liquid Fluoroelastomers and the investigation of their properties

The preparation of liquid fluoroelastomers that are liquid with excellent mechanical properties remains a challenge. Here, we show a very straightforward method to produce liquid fluoroelastomers by introducing carborane. Carborane-terminated liquid fluoropolymer was synthesized by Steglich reaction of carboxyl-terminated liquid fluoropolymer and 1,7-bis (hydroxy)-carborane. The product is brown, viscous at room temperature and in the semi-solid state. On this basis, HDI Trimer was used as a curing agent to cure liquid fluoroelastomer. Thermogravimetric analysis of the cured products was carried out. The carbon residue rate of the cured product increased from 35% to 58% of the cured product. The results show that the addition of carborane structure can effectively improve the carbon residue rate of liquid fluoroelastomer. The tensile strength, elongation and shore hardness of the cured product were also examined, and the results show that the tensile strength of carborane modified liquid fluorine increased by 463% compared with that before modification, but the elongation at break was reduced by 42%, which was mainly due to the introduction of rigid structure of carborane. At the same time, the solvent resistance test results show that the introduction of carborane structure has little effect on the aviation kerosene resistance and organic solvent resistance of fluororubber, but it can improve its alkali resistance.

Underwater Communication and Optical Camouflage Ionogels

Marine animals, such as leptocephalus and jellyfish, can sense external stimuli and achieve optical camouflage in the aquatic environment. Fabricating an intelligent soft sensor that can mimic the capabilities of transparent marine animals and function underwater can enable transformative applications in various novel fields. However, previously reported soft sensors struggle to meet the requirements of adhesion, self-healing ability, optical transparency, and stable conductivity in the aquatic environment. Herein, high-performance ionogels by virtue of ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions between fluorine-rich poly(ionic liquid) and ionic liquid are designed. The hydrophobic dynamic viscoelastic networks provide excellent properties for ionogels, including optical transparency, adjustable mechanical properties, underwater self-healing ability, underwater adhesiveness, conductivity, and 3D printability. A mechanically compliant and visually invisible underwater soft sensor based on ionogel is developed. This sensor can achieve optical camouflage, human-body-motion detection, and barrier-free communication in the aquatic environment. A novel contactless sensing mechanism based on changing the electron transfer pathway is proposed. Several interesting functions, such as detection of water environment changes, recognition of objects, delivery of information, and even identification of human standing posture can be realized. Importantly, the ionogel sensor can avoid fatigue and physical damage in the sensing process.

Activation of different C–F bonds in fluoropolymers for Cu(0)-mediated single electron transfer radical polymerization

The graft polymerization of MMA initiated from PVDF-based fluoropolymers via single electron transfer controlled radical polymerization (SET-CRP) is reported.

Gamma Radiation-Induced Unsaturated P(VDF-CTFE) Membranes with Improved Mechanical Properties

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) membranes were prepared by drop-casting with tetrahydrofuran (THF), and were then radiated by a low dose of gamma radiation without any other reagents. The apparent colour of the freshly prepared film was a semi-transparent white, which gradually darkened and finally turned black after 10.2kGy gamma radiation. Meanwhile, the yield and breaking strength of the membrane both improved. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed that the structure of the microcrystal of the irradiated P(VDF-CTFE)-THF membrane was not changed. FT-IR analysis showed that the structure of the newly formed double bonds was dominated by –CF2–CF=CH–CF2–, which was formed by both dehydrofluorination and dehydrochlorination. This structure was further confirmed by 1H NMR spectra. The intermediates, such a radical-containing double bonds (–(CF=CH)n–C•F–) formed in this process were traced by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The thermal and mechanical properties were studied by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), stress–strain and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and all the changes of microstructure and optimization of apparent properties were not found in the corresponding membrane prepared by a solution-cast method with ethyl acetate (EtOAc). Therefore, this paper briefly analyses the probable mechanism of using low dose of gamma radiation to improve the mechanical properties of the P(VDF-CTFE) film prepared with THF.

Facile Preparation of BaClxFy for the Catalytic Dehydrochlorination of 1-Chloro-1,1-Difluoroethane to Vinylidene Fluoride

BaClxFy as well as BaF2 and BaClF catalysts were prepared by solid-state reaction at room temperature with Ba(OH)2 as the precursor and NH4F/NH4Cl as the F and Cl sources. The catalysts were applied for the dehydrochlorination of 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane to vinylidene fluoride at 350 °C. The industrial manufacture of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) is carried out at 600–700 °C, whereas the BaClxFy catalysts provided a promising pathway to produce VDF at much lower temperatures. Unfortunately, the selectivity of VDF over BaF2 decreased from 94% to 84% along with the deactivation of the BaF2 catalyst monotonically. In the presence of small amounts of Cl in BaF2, stabilized selectivity was achieved. Over BaCl0.05F0.95, BaCl0.1F0.9 and BaCl0.25F0.75, no decrease in VDF selectivity was observed. Clearly, the presence of small amounts Cl during solid-state preparation inhibited the growth of BaF2 crystalline significantly. Far smaller particles were achieved. The particle size, or more precisely, the crystal size of the barium catalyst played a major role in the catalytic performance. In addition to the crystal growth, the presence of small amounts of Cl during catalyst preparation changed the chemical state of Ba, and therefore the adsorption and activation of the C–Cl bond for HCFC-142b were altered.
