Abstract
In dairy cattle, ovarian cysts (COFs) represent a major cause of infertility. They can be divided morphologically into follicular and luteal cysts based on their wall thickness, which can be examined by ultrasound, and progesterone secretion, which can be analyzed in serum or milk. The aim of our study was to evaluate cyst recovery using a modified ovsynch protocol with no need to differentiate COFs. Additionally, the beta-hydroxybutyric acid level (BHB), progesterone values, and trace elements in the serum were measured when therapy started. Fourteen days after treatment, COF recovery was confirmed in 88% of the cases. The median calving-to-conception interval, number of artificial inseminations until pregnancy, and median number of days from treatment to pregnancy were not different between the modified ovsynch protocol group and all other COF treatments. The logistic regression for COF included the parameters group, the cyst type, breed, the number of artificial inseminations (AIs), calving to conception cut at 200 d p.p., the cyst size, and therapy. The backward (and also forward) variable selection of the logistic regression yielded only the cyst size as a significant negative impact factor for recovery. In conclusion, the modified ovsynch protocol is a useful, practical option for COF treatment with the advantage of not needing to differentiate between the two cyst types.

Abstract
Ovarian cysts are one of the most common ovarian dysfunctions in dairy cattle, which can
lead to a considerable economic loss through its high incidence and can reduce the
reproductive performance. Anestrus is the most significant clinical sign observed in dairy
cattle suffering from this condition. For diagnosis, most of the veterinarians use a
combination of methods, from ultrasonography as an additional approach to trans-rectal
palpation and symptomatology when assessing ovarian cysts. Although the Ovsynch treatment
seems to be preferred, the pregnancy rate after this treatment is relatively low. Despite
such reports on dairy cattle ovarian cysts, the data is insufficient to validate all the
characteristics of this condition. This review summarizes what the literature has so far
provided from definition to treatment of ovarian cysts in dairy cattle.

Abstract
The efficacy of five ovulation-synchronization protocols with FTAI in treatment of cows diagnosed with follicular cysts was investigated in a nonrandomized study in a single herd. Cows identified with follicular structures >25 mm on two subsequent ultrasonographic (USG) examinations 7-10 days apart (n = 552) were assigned to one of the five treatment regimens on the day of the second USG examination. Treatment regimens were Ovsynch (GnRH-7d-PGF2α-56 h-GnRH-16 h-FTAI), New-CIDR (as Ovsynch with a new CIDR insert being fitted between days 0 and 7), Reused-CIDR (as New-CIDR but the CIDR insert was previously used for 7 days in another cow), G-New CIDR (Pre-GnRH on day 0 with the New-CIDR regimen being initiated 7 days later), and RG-Ovsynch (Pre-GnRH on day 0 and then every 7 days until detection of a luteal structure upon USG examination; at that point the Ovsynch was initiated). A subset of cows was subjected to ovarian USG examination at the time of PGF2α administration, at insemination, and 8-10 days post-insemination. Progesterone-releasing ability of new and reused CIDR inserts were evaluated in cows diagnosed with severe ovarian inactivity (n = 16). The data were analyzed using logistic regression with pregnancy per AI on days 30 (P/Al 30) and 70 (P/AI 70) post-insemination were included as outcome measures. Compared with Ovsynch, RG-Ovsynch improved the P/AI 30 (OR = 2.6, P = 0.03) and the P/AI 70 (OR = 2.5, P = 0.05). New-CIDR and G-New CIDR were associated with non-significant increase in P/AI 30 (OR = 2.1, P = 0.09 and OR = 2.3, P = 0.07, respectively) and P/AI 70 (OR = 2.01, P = 0.09 and OR = 2.2, P = 0.09, respectively). Reused-CIDR was not associated with improvement in P/AI (P = 0.93 and 0.79 for P/AI 30 and P/AI 70, respectively). RG-Ovsynch had a longer diagnosis-to-FTAI interval (median 24, IQR 17,31). The dominant ovarian structures and the presence of a cyst or a luteal structure at PGF2α administration or at insemination were not associated with P/AI. The new and re-used CIDR inserts produced comparable concentrations of serum progesterone 3 h, 3 days and 7 days post CIDR insertion. In conclusion, the RG-Ovsynch improved the P/AI whereas the New-CIDR and the G-New CIDR regimens tended to increase the P/AI compared with Ovsynch. Marginal differences in P/AI between RG-Ovsynch, New-CIDR, and G-New-CIDR together with prolonged diagnosis-to-FTAI in RG-Ovsynch should be considered if to evaluate the economic value of these regimens.

Abstract
Current knowledge about the function of the reproductive tract and appropriate use of hormonal drugs affords control of the oestrus cycle of cows. One of the hormonal protocols is OvSynch, which enables artificial insemination (AI) to be performed at the precise optimum time without control of the ovaries and uterus. Use of such protocols in reproductive management allows oestrus cycles to be synchronised and cows to be effectively inseminated without oestrous detection, which is time-consuming and difficult in farms with numerous cows. Therefore, OvSynch has become the first management tool for AI and is an alternative method to heat detection. Over the 20 years since its first implementation, OvSynch has been modified many times to improve its reproduction outcomes and widen its use. Besides its original use for heat synchronisation, it is also used in many ovarian disorders as a therapeutic method. This review article describes the possibilities which OvSynch provides, its current modifications, various applications, and the advantages and disadvantages of its use in practice.

Abstract
A study was conducted during hot season to determine the effect of synchronization of ovulation with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on fertility of lactating dairy cows with ovarian cysts. Non cyclic Holstein dairy cows (n = 80) were stratified by parity and diagnosed as having an ovarian cyst. The cows were further identified as follicular or luteal cysts according to the plasma progesterone (P4) concentration and the cystic image of ultrasonography. Cystic cows were randomly assigned to receive treatments (Ovsynch as the control or Ovsynch plus 3000 IU hCG). All cows were artificially inseminated at 16-18 h after the second gonadotropin releasing hormone injection. Cows supplemented with hCG had a greater number of corpus luteum (1.8 ± 0.2 and 0.8 ± 0.3; P < 0.05) and had greater P4 concentration on day 12 than those control cows (6.3 ± 0.3 and 3.9 ± 0.4 ng/ml; P < 0.05). Concentration of cortisol did not differ between groups of cystic cows. No significant differences were found in overall conception rates between the treatments; however, significantly greater conception rate (P = 0.03) was observed in cows with luteal cysts receiving Ovsynch plus hCG. This study highlights that administration of hCG following the Ovsynch-based timed artificial insemination (AI) is more effective than the control Ovsynch by which the hCG affects corpus luteum (CL) development, P4 concentration, and thus improves conception rate in dairy cows with luteal cysts.

Abstract
The significant decrease in fertility observed in dairy cattle during the last few decades and increasing requirements by the farmers have made a regular control of reproduction indispensable to urgently identify and solve potential problems affecting reproductive efficiency. Traditionally, the main diagnostic methods used for reproductive control in cattle included rectal palpation, inspection of vaginal discharge and vaginoscopy. Since the 1990 s, the use of ultrasound (US) has become a common diagnostic method as a result of the new advances made in the development of US scans: smaller size, high level of autonomy, high image quality and accessible prices. Ultrasound improves accuracy in the diagnoses of stages of the oestrous cycle, ovarian and uterine pathologies, and pregnancy diagnosis. In addition, it facilitates the diagnosis of alterations during pregnancy (embryo mortality, foetal malformations, etc.) and helps determining foetal sex from day 55 of pregnancy.

Abstract
Despite the variety of hormonal treating regimes used, a proportion of cows with cystic ovarian disease (COD) fail to be cured. The hypothesis of this study was that cyst aspiration would improve the curing rate and/or accelerate the resumption of ovarian activity in affected cows. In four groups of cows the following treatments were administered: Group A (n = 18) only cyst aspiration, Group AGP (n = 19) cyst aspiration and a combination of GnRH and PGF 2alpha , Group GP (n = 25) only GnRH and PGF 2alpha , and Group C (n = 15) untreated control. Cysts were aspirated without ultrasonographic guidance, using a new device. All cows from Group AGP responded to treatment, while 5.5% from Group A and 16% from Group GP remained anoestrous (P < 0.05). These refractory cases were re-treated with the AGP protocol and exhibited oestrus within 12.4 +/- 1.1 days. The interval from PGF 2alpha injection to oestrus was significantly reduced in cows treated with cyst aspiration. Until day 80 post partum (pp), 11 of the 15 untreated cows (73.3%) retained the initial cyst and remained anoestrous. It is concluded that persisting cases of COD can be treated by combining aspiration with a hormonal regime. The technique presented here has no complication for the cow, is efficient, easy, safe for the operator, and requires low-cost equipment.

Abstract
Fertility of the postpartum period is negatively influenced by the incidence of anestrus. The latter condition is characterized by the absence of estrous behavior, which may be an indication of suboptimal conditions (e.g., inadequate peripartum nutrition) or pathologic conditions (e.g., chronic debilitating diseases or uterine and ovarian diseases). Although initiation of ovarian follicular growth in the postpartum period is generally not affected, subsequent development (deviation) and the fate of the dominant follicle are the primary factors that affect reestablishment of ovarian cyclicity. Anestrus can be classified based on the three functional states of follicular development; that is, follicle emergence, deviation, and ovulation. Prevention of anestrus is preferable to treatment and can be achieved in part by maintaining a healthy periparturient period. To better understand the etiology of anestrus and its prevention, research is urgently needed in the following three areas: the role of peripartum disease conditions that influence reproduction, genes involved in ovulation, and the influence of proteins (e.g., leptin) that appear to be important links between metabolic signals and the neuroendocrine axis.

Abstract
It was the aim of this field study to evaluate two different protocols of ovulation synchronization for the treatment of ovarian cysts and their effect on reproductive performance in dairy cows. In addition, factors with a possible influence on treatment success and pregnancy outcome as well as costs per pregnancy were analysed. The study was performed with 130 German Holsteins with ovarian cysts diagnosed on days 55 to 60 postpartum. Cows belonging to group 1 (n = 65) received a modified ovsynch protocol [day 0: 0.15 mg cloprostenol (PGF) + 0.02 mg buserelin acetate (GnRH); day 14: PGF; day 16: GnRH]. Group 2 (n = 65) was treated with the conventional ovsynch protocol (day 0: GnRH; day 7: PGF; day 9: GnRH). Timed artificial insemination was performed 20 to 24 h later. Cows without ovarian cysts served as controls. Treatment success (disappearance of the ovarian cyst) after the first ovsynch cycle was higher in group 1 (66.2%) than in group 2 (23.1%, p < 0.05). Reproductive measures in group 1 were comparable with those of the control group and, compared with group 2, were conspicuously better (66.2%, 76.9%, 83.1%, 59.5% vs. 40.0%, 50.7%, 60.0%, 27.5% for cumulative pregnancy rate after treatment cycle 1 to 3 and second service conception rate, respectively, p < 0.05). Overconditioned cows and cows with larger ovarian cysts showed a diminished treatment and pregnancy success. In group 1, costs per pregnancy were only slightly higher than in the control group (group 1: €352.44, group 2: €484.59, control group: €333.77). In conclusion, our results suggest that ovsynch protocols can be used in the treatment of ovarian cysts. The modified ovsynch protocol led to a better cure rate as well as a better reproductive performance, and was economically beneficial compared with a conventional ovsynch protocol.

Abstract
Development of follicular cysts is a frequent ovarian dysfunction in cattle. Functional changes that precede cyst formation are unknown, but a role for anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in the development of follicular cysts has been suggested in humans. This study aimed to characterize intrafollicular steroids and AMH during follicular growth in a strain of beef cows exhibiting a high incidence of occurrence of follicular cysts. Normal follicular growth and cyst development were assessed by ovarian ultrasonography scanning during the 8 days before slaughtering. Experimental regression of cysts was followed by rapid growth of follicles that reached the size of cysts within 3-5 days. These young cysts exhibited higher intrafollicular concentrations of testosterone, estradiol-17beta, and progesterone than large early dominant follicles did in normal ovaries, but they exhibited similar concentrations of AMH. Later-stage cysts were characterized by hypertrophy of theca interna cells, high intrafollicular progesterone concentration, and high steroidogenic acute regulatory protein mRNA expression in granulosa cells. Progesterone and AMH concentrations in the largest follicles (> or =10 mm) and cysts were negatively correlated (r = -0.45, P < 0.01). Smaller follicles (<10 mm) exhibited higher intrafollicular testosterone and estradiol-17beta concentrations in ovaries with cysts compared to normal ovaries. During follicular growth, AMH concentration dropped in follicles larger than 5 mm in diameter and in a similar way in ovaries with and without cysts. In conclusion, enhanced growth and steroidogenesis in antral follicles <10 mm preceded cyst formation in cow ovaries. Intrafollicular AMH was not a marker of cystic development in the cow, but low AMH concentrations in cysts were associated with luteinization.

Abstract
This study compared two types of controlled internal drug release (CIDR)-based timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol for treatment of repeat breeder dairy cows. In the first trial of the experiment, 55 repeat breeder cows were randomly assigned to the following two treatments. (1) In the EB group, a CIDR device was inserted into the cows, and then the cows were administered an injection of 1 mg estradiol benzoate (EB) plus 50 mg progesterone (P4; Day 0). On Day 7, they were given an injection of PGF(2alpha) and the CIDR device was removed. The cows were given an injection of 1 mg EB on Day 8 and were subjected to TAI 30 h later (n=27). (2) In the gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) group, a CIDR device was inserted into the cows, and then the cows were administered an injection of 250 microg gonadorelin (GnRH; Day 0). On Day 7, they were given an injection of PGF(2alpha) and the CIDR device was removed. The cows were given an injection of 250 microg GnRH on Day 9 and were subjected to TAI 17 h later (n=28). In the second trial, 41 repeat breeder cows that were confirmed as not pregnant in the first trial were randomly assigned to the same two treatments used in the first trial (an EB group of 20 cows and a GnRH group of 21 cows). The ovaries of 15 cows from each group were examined by transrectal ultrasonography in order to observe the changes in ovarian structures, and blood samples were collected for analysis of serum P4 concentrations. The pregnancy rates following TAI in the first (18.5 vs. 32.1%) and second (40.0 vs. 38.1%) trials and the combined rates (27.7 vs. 34.7%) did not differ between the EB and GnRH groups. The proportions of cows with follicular wave emergence within 7 days did not differ between the EB (12/15) and GnRH groups (13/15). The interval to wave emergence was shorter (P<0.01) in the GnRH group than in the EB group, but there was no difference in the mean diameters of dominant follicles on Day 7 between the groups. Moreover, the proportions of cows with synchronized ovulation following a second EB or GnRH treatment did not differ between the groups. In conclusion, treatment with either EB or GnRH in a CIDR-based TAI protocol results in synchronous follicular wave emergence, follicular development, synchronous ovulation, and similar pregnancy rates for TAI in repeat breeder cows.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between the level of milk production on the day of diagnosis of ovarian cysts and treatment response using the Ovsynch protocol. On the day of cyst diagnosis (Day 0), 260 lactating dairy cows with ovarian cysts were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), PGF2alpha on Day 7, GnRH on Day 9, and timed inseminated 16-20 h later (Ovsynch protocol). Pregnancy was determined (by transrectal palpation) between 42 and 49 days after insemination. On Day 0, data for milk production (kg/day), parity, days in milk (DIM), and body condition score (BCS) were recorded. Using the median value for milk production on the day of diagnosis, cows were classified as high producers (>28.5 kg) and low producers (<or=28.5 kg). Cows were classified as primiparous (first lactation) or multiparous (second or more lactations). Data for conception rate (CR) were analyzed using logistic regression accounting for milk production on the day of diagnosis, parity, DIM, and BCS. The CR for low and high producers was 6 and 16%, respectively. There was no association between DIM and BCS with the other variables (P>or=0.05). Primiparous cows were more likely (adjusted odds ratio: AOR=3.63; 95% CI: 95% confidence intervals=1.28-10.30; P<or=0.01) to become pregnant than multiparous cows, and low producers were less likely (AOR=0.31; 95% CI=0.11-0.85; P<or=0.02) to become pregnant than high producers. It was concluded that cows with high milk production on the day of cyst diagnosis were more likely to become pregnant following treatment than cows with low milk production. It appears paradoxical that high milk production predisposes to the occurrence of ovarian cysts, but that high-producing cows respond better to treatment compared to low-producing cows. It is hypothesized that the level of milk production on the day of cyst diagnosis could be an additional potential predictor of success to treatment of lactating cows with ovarian cysts using the Ovsynch protocol.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the economic benefits of timed artificial insemination (AI) and a progesterone insert as therapeutic treatments for cows diagnosed with cystic ovarian disease (COD). A secondary objective was to illustrate the use of a stochastic dynamic simulation model to fully account for all changes in revenues and costs affected by differences in treatments. First, 4 herds of 1,000 cows each were simulated until steady state. These cows were free from COD and inseminated based on estrus only. Herds differed by probability of estrus detection (46 or 70%) and days in milk (DIM) when nonpregnant cows were culled (330 or 400 d). Second, 3 herds were created with 1,000 nonpregnant cows at 90, 170, or 250 DIM. These cows were considered diagnosed with COD at the start of the simulation (d 0); no new cases of COD developed after d 0. Cows spontaneously recovered or were treated. Treatments were either timed AI or intravaginal device containing progesterone followed by PGF(2alpha) and then AI if estrus was detected. Effects of treatments were evaluated in 48 scenarios based on compliance of timed AI (82 or 100%), probability of estrus detection (46 or 70%), and DIM when nonpregnant cows were culled (330 or 400 d). As cows became pregnant or were replaced, the herd evolved into the associated steady-state herd. Seven scenarios resulted in less than 50% of cows conceiving before they were culled. The percentage of cows diagnosed with COD that calved again ranged from 14.0 to 74.4% and was significantly reduced when COD was diagnosed later in lactation. Treatments in all cases were more valuable than waiting for spontaneous recovery. The average values of timed AI (82 or 100% compliance) and the progesterone insert were 83.29 dollars, 86.83 dollars, and 71.89 dollars, respectively, compared with waiting for spontaneous recovery. Treatments were least beneficial at 90 DIM. The benefits of timed AI (82 or 100% compliance) compared with the progesterone insert, adjusted for DIM and days to culling, were 14.98 dollars and 21.53 dollars when the probability of estrus detection was 46%. At 70% probability of estrus detection, the benefits were 7.81 dollars and 8.34 dollars, respectively. Overall benefit of treatment by timed AI was 11.39 dollars greater than by progesterone insert.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the Ovsynch and controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR) protocols under commercial conditions for the treatment of cystic ovarian disease in dairy cattle. A total of 401 lactating dairy cows with ovarian cysts were alternatively allocated to two treatment groups on the day of diagnosis. Cows in the Ovsynch group were treated with GnRH on Day 0, PGF2alpha on Day 7, GnRH on Day 9, with timed insemination 16-20 h later. Cows in the CIDR group were treated with a CIDR insert on Day 0 for 7 days; on Day 7, the CIDR was removed, and cows were treated with PGF2alpha. All cows in the CIDR group were observed for estrus and cows exhibiting estrus within 7 days following removal of the CIDR and PGF2alpha administration were inseminated. The outcomes of interest for this experiment were the likelihood to be inseminated, return to cyclicity (determined by a CL on Day 21), conception and pregnancy rates. Data for these variables were analyzed using logistic regression. The percentage of cows inseminated in the Ovsynch and CIDR groups were 82 and 44%, respectively. Cows in the Ovsynch group were 5.8 times more likely to be inseminated than cows in the CIDR group. Cows with a low BCS were 0.48 times less likely to be inseminated than cows with a high BCS. The percentage of cows with a CL on Day 21 for the Ovsynch and CIDR groups was 83 and 79%, respectively (P > 0.05). Cows with a low BCS were 0.49 times less likely to have CL on Day 21 than cows with a high BCS. Conception and pregnancy rates for cows in the Ovsynch group were 18.3 and 14.4%, respectively. Conception and pregnancy rates for cows in the CIDR group were 23.1 and 9.5%, respectively. There was no significant differences between conception or pregnancy rates in cows in both groups. Primiparous cows were 2.6 times more likely to conceive than multiparous cows. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that fertility was not different between cows with ovarian cysts treated with either the Ovsynch or the CIDR protocols in this dairy herd. In addition, primiparous cows had an increased likelihood for conception compared to multiparous cows, and cows with a low BCS were less likely to be inseminated or have a CL on Day 21, regardless of treatment.

Abstract
Recently, reproductive management has become more difficult as a result of increased herd size. Problems with missing estrous signs and decrease in conception rate by artificial insemination (AI) performed at wrong timing have caused low AI conception rates. In 1995, ovulation synchronization and fixed-time AI (Ovsynch/TAI) was developed in the USA as a new reproductive technology, which was accepted as an useful reproductive management tool in many countries. However, no information on the use of Ovsynch/TAI was available in Japan. It was, therefore, warranted to show the ovulation rate and conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI using gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRH-A, fertirelin acetate) and prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha)-THAM, both were commercially available in this country. The conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI has been known to vary among different herds and individuals. Investigation and analysis of factors affecting the conception rate was also warranted to improve the conception rate. A series of experiments were carried out to establish Ovsynch/TAI using domestically produced GnRH-A and PGF2alpha and to study factors affecting conception rate after Ovsynch protocol. Ovsynch using 100 microg GnRH-A and 25 mg PGF2alpha were observed using ultrasonography. As a result, a high synchronization rate of ovulation at 16 to 20 h after the second GnRH injection was confirmed. The conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI was compared in 87 cows with the conception rate after AI at estrus induced by PGF2alpha (139 cows). Conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI was higher than the figure after AI at induced estrus (59.1% vs 20.9%, P<0.05). The dose of GnRH-A was also studied and a practical dose of GnRH-A was found to be 50 microg per cow. To clarify some factors affecting the conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI, 1,558 cows were investigated for the state of their ovaries, days after calving, parity, season, ovarian cyclicity postpartum and nutritional state at the day of Ovsynch. The overall conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI was 51.5%. Fifty-six cows (3.6%) showed estrus at 6 to 7 d after the first injection of GnRH-A. The conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI was low in cows that were 40 to 60 d postpartum, those in their 5th lactation or more, those bred in July to August, and those recovering ovarian cyclicity later than 56 d postpartum. The conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI was high in cows in which body condition score (BCS) was 3.75 at dry period and 3.0 at the day of Ovsynch. In conclusion, Ovsynch/TAI is an effective tool for the reproductive management of dairy cows. A steady and sufficient conception rate after Ovsynch/TAI could be expected by taking the factors affecting the conception rate into the consideration.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors for development of postpartum ovarian cysts by evaluating several reproductive factors in individual cows, and to determine the economic impact of ovarian cysts on subsequent reproductive performance in dairy herds in Korea. The data, including cow parity, abnormal puerperium, endometritis, body condition score (BCS), and breeding status were collected from 634 cows in 9 dairy herds. We used logistic regression to evaluate the effects of these factors on ovarian cysts. A stepwise procedure, used to obtain the appropriate model with alpha=0.05, revealed that cow parity was the most important risk factor for ovarian cyst development within 8 weeks postpartum, while development of endometritis and BCS loss>or=1 from the dry period to 8 weeks postpartum were the most important risk factors for ovarian cyst development beyond 8 weeks postpartum. The occurrence of ovarian cysts beyond 8 weeks postpartum prolonged (P<0.01) the mean intervals from calving to first service (27 days) and conception (77 days), and increased (P<0.05) the culling rate (7.8%), while ovarian cyst development within 8 weeks postpartum did not affect (P>0.05) the mean intervals from calving to first service and conception or the culling rate. The economic loss resulting from the occurrence of ovarian cysts was estimated at approximately 823,996 won ($687) due to effects on the cost of nutrition, average growth of calves, labor and medical costs, and culling. These results suggest that cow parity is correlated with the development of ovarian cysts within 8 weeks postpartum, and endometritis and BCS loss>or=1 from the dry period to 8 weeks postpartum are correlated with the development of ovarian cysts after 8 weeks postpartum, which decreases reproductive performance and results in economic loss in dairy herds in Korea.

Abstract
The objective was to compare pregnancy rates to resynchronization and timed AI (TAI) protocols in lactating dairy cows that received GnRH at 23 d and were diagnosed not pregnant at 30 d after the pre-enrollment AI. Nonpregnant cows (624) at ultrasonography on day 30 (study day 0) were classified as diestrus (74.8%), metestrus (5.6%) and without a CL (19.5%). Cows in diestrus were assigned either to the GnRH group (PGF2alpha on day 0, GnRH on day 2 and TAI 16 h later, n = 238) or the estradiol cypionate (ECP) group (PGF2alpha on day 0, ECP on day 1, and TAI 36 h later, n = 229). Cows in metestrus were assigned to the Modified Heatsynch Group (GnRH on day 0, PGF(2alpha) on day 7, ECP on day 8 and TAI on day 9, n = 35). Cows without a CL (n = 122) were classified either as proestrus (10.6%), ovarian cysts (7.5%) or anestrus (1.4%), and assigned to factorial treatments (i.e., use of GnRH versus CIDR) to either the GnRH group (GnRH on day 0, PGF2alpha on day 7, GnRH on day 9 and TAI 16 h later, n = 28), the CIDR group (CIDR insert from days 0 to 7, PGF2alpha on day 7, GnRH on day 9 and TAI 16 h later, n = 34), the GnRH + CIDR group (GnRH on day 0, CIDR insert from days 0 to 7, PGF2alpha on day 7, GnRH on day 9 and TAI 16h later, n = 32), and the control group (PGF2alpha on day 7, GnRH on day 9 and TAI 16 h later, n = 28). For cows without a CL, plasma P4 concentrations were determined on days 0, 7, 10 and 17 and ovarian structures determined on days 0, 7 and 17. Pregnancy rates were evaluated at 30, 55 and 90 d after the resynchronized AI. For cows in diestrus, there were no differences in pregnancy rates on days 30, 55 and 90 for cows in the GnRH (27.5, 26.5 and 24.2%) or ECP (29.1, 25.5 and 24.1%) groups. In addition, there were no differences in pregnancy losses between days 30 and 55 and 55 and 90 between the GnRH (7.0 and 8.6%) and ECP (9.8 and 5.4%) groups. For cows without a CL, GnRH on day 0 increased the proportion of cows with a CL on days 7 and 17 and plasma P4 concentration on day 17 in cows with ovarian cysts but not for cows in proestrus. The CIDR insert increased pregnancy rate in cows with ovarian cysts but reduced pregnancy rate for cows in proestrus.

Abstract
The objective was to compare pregnancy rates and pregnancy losses in lactating dairy cows that were diagnosed not pregnant and re-inseminated following either the Ovsynch or Heatsynch protocols. Also evaluated were the effects of stages of the estrous cycle, ovarian cysts and anestrus on pregnancy rates for both treatments. Non-pregnant cows (n = 332) as determined by ultrasonography on day 27 post-AI (study day 0) were divided into two groups. Cows in the Ovsynch group (n = 166) received GnRH on day 0, PGF2alpha on day 7, GnRH on day 9, and timed AI (TAI) 16 h later (day 10). Cows in the Heatsynch group (n = 166) received GnRH on day 0, PGF2alpha on day 7, estradiol cypionate (ECP) on day 8, and TAI 48 h later (day 10). Cows detected in estrus on days 8 and 9 were inseminated and included in the study. On day 0, cows were classified according to different stages of the estrous cycle, or presence of ovarian cysts or anestrus. Pregnancy rates were evaluated 27, 45 and 90 days after resynchronized AI. Overall, there was no difference in pregnancy rates on days 27, 45 and 90 between cows in the Ovsynch (25.2, 17.5, and 13.9%) and Heatsynch (25.8, 19.9, and 16.1%) groups. There was no difference in pregnancy losses from days 27 to 45 and days 45 to 90 for cows in the Ovsynch (25.0 and 17.9%) and Heatsynch (14.7 and 10.3%) groups. However, pregnancy rates were increased when cows in metestrus were subjected to the Heatsynch protocol and cows with ovarian cysts were subjected to the Ovsynch protocol.

Abstract
Pregnancy rates were compared in lactating dairy cows (n = 1083) assigned to protocols for resynchronization of ovulation based on stages of the estrous cycle, or presence of ovarian cysts or anestrus. Cows were detected not pregnant by ultrasonography 30 d after a previous AI (study day 0) and classified as diestrus, metestrus, proestrus, with ovarian cysts or anestrus. Cows in diestrus (January-May) were assigned to either Ovsynch (GnRH day 0, PGF2alpha day 7, GnRH day 9, and timed-AI [TAI] 16 h later; n = 96), or Quicksynch (PGF2alpha day 0, estradiol cypionate [ECP] day 1, AI at detected estrus [AIDE] on day 2, or TAI on day 3; n = 96). Cows in diestrus (June-December) were assigned to either Ovsynch (n = 156) or Modified Quicksynch (PGF2alpha day 0, ECP day 1, AIDE days 2 and 3, and to Ovsynch on day 4 if not detected in estrus; n = 142). Cows in metestrus were assigned either to Ovsynch (n = 68), Heatsynch (GnRH day 0, PGF2alpha day 7, ECP day 8, AIDE day 9, or TAI day 10; n = 62), or GnRH + Ovsynch (GnRH on day 0, followed by Ovsynch on day 8; n = 64). Cows in proestrus, with ovarian cysts, or anestrus were assigned to either Ovsynch (proestrus n = 89, ovarian cysts n = 97, anestrus n = 8) or GnRH + Ovsynch (proestrus n = 87, ovarian cysts n = 109, anestrus n = 9). Pregnancy rate was evaluated 30, 55 and 90 d after resynchronized AI. For cows in diestrus (January-May), pregnancy rates were higher for Ovsynch (35.9, 29.2 and 26.0%) than for Quicksynch (21.7, 16.7 and 15.6%). For cows in diestrus (June-December), pregnancy rates were similar for Ovsynch (34.4, 24.0 and 23.6%) and Modified Quicksynch (27.1, 26.2 and 21.6%). For cows in metestrus, pregnancy rates were higher for GnRH + Ovsynch (33.3, 24.5 and 20.3%) than for Heatsynch (20.3, 12.9 and 9.8%). For cows with ovarian cysts, pregnancy rates were higher for GnRH + Ovsynch (30.3, 26.6 and 22.9%) than for Ovsynch (20.2, 18.5 and 14.7%). Assignment to resynchronization protocols based on the stages of the estrous cycle, or presence of ovarian cysts improved pregnancy rates.

Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the effect of 2 doses of PGF(2alpha) injected early postpartum on uterine involution, serum concentration of acute phase proteins at 12 d postpartum, and fertility in Holstein cows with acute puerperal metritis. Only cows diagnosed with retained fetal membranes and metritis and treated with ceftiofur hydrochloride for 5 d were used in the study. Two hundred cows were assigned randomly to be treated (n = 100) or to serve as controls (n = 100). Treatment consisted of 2 i.m. injections of PGF(2alpha) 8 h apart on d 8 postpartum. A subsample of 90 cows was selected randomly (45 treated cows; 45 controls) to evaluate uterine diameter using ultrasonography, uterine score, and serum concentrations of acute phase proteins at 12 d postpartum. The outcome variable for all cows was conception rate at first service. Postpartum, primiparous, treated cows had smaller uterine diameters and lower uterine scores than controls. Cows with a uterine diameter <5.1 cm at 12 d postpartum were 5.5 times more likely to conceive at first service than cows with larger uterine horn diameter. Treatment significantly reduced the concentrations of serum alpha1-acid glycoprotein. Within primiparous cows, treatment also increased conception at first service by 17%. It was concluded that 2 doses of PGF(2alpha) 8 h apart at 8 d postpartum in primiparous cows with acute puerperal metritis decreased the diameter of uterine horns and serum concentration of alpha1-acid glycoprotein at 12 d postpartum and increased the conception rate at first service.

Abstract
This report reviews the most recent developments in prostaglandin-based oestrous synchronization programmes for postpartum dairy cows and addresses the efficiency of controlled breeding protocols based on such developments for cows with abnormal ovarian conditions. A double prostaglandin protocol applied 11-14 days apart seems to be capable of bringing most cows to oestrus. Because of varying oestrus onset times, improved conception rates are obtained following artificial insemination (AI) at detected oestrus rather than fixed-time AI in prostaglandin-treated cows. The administration of oestradiol or human chorionic gonadotrophin, or both these hormones, after prostaglandin treatment, improves the synchrony of oestrus yet does not enhance the conception rate. Progesterone-based treatments for oestrous synchronization are considered the most appropriate for non-cyclic or anoestrous postpartum dairy cows; prostaglandin alone being ineffective because of the absence of a mature corpus luteum in these cows. Improved oestrus synchrony and fertility rate have been reported using short-term progesterone treatment regimes (7-9 days) with or without oestradiol benzoate combined with the use of a luteolytic agent given 1 day before, or at the time of, progesterone withdrawal. The ovulation synchronization (Ovsynch) protocol, based on the use of gonadotrophin releasing hormone and prostaglandin, was developed to coordinate follicular recruitment, CL regression and the time of ovulation. This protocol allows fixed time insemination and has proved effective in improving reproductive management in postpartum dairy cows. However, timed AI following Ovsynch seems to have no beneficial effects in heifers, because of an inconsistent follicle wave pattern, and in anoestrous cows, given their lack of prostaglandin responsive CL. To date, there are several prostaglandin based, fixed-time insemination oestrous synchronization protocols for use in early postpartum dairy cows with ovarian disorders such as ovarian cysts and acyclicity.

Abstract
Cystic ovarian degeneration (COD) is considered to be one of the most important causes of reproductive failure in cattle. There is a severe economic loss to dairy industry because COD increases days-open in the postpartum period and the culling rates. The disease process is a consequence of a mature follicle that fails to ovulate at the appointed time of ovulation in the oestrous cycle. This anovulatory follicular structure either regresses or persists as a follicular or luteal cyst depending upon its structural/functional characteristics. The cells lining the follicular cyst synthesize oestrogen that, in certain instances, forces the animal to exhibit clinical signs of nymphomania. Besides oestrogen production, as per recent findings, they are also capable of secreting varying amount of progesterone which may dictate their fate. The animals that carry a luteal cyst may tend to be in anoestrus as the higher amount of progesterone secreted by this luteinized structure may change the pattern of gonadotrophins' secretion. Present findings suggest that perturbation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-ovarian (HHO) axis, due to many exogenous and endogenous factors, as the cause for anovulation. For example, it has been suggested that lack of hypothalamic or hypophyseal response to the positive feedback effect of oestrogens that are secreted by the dominant follicle as one of the many causes. The non-physiological changes that occur in the receptor expression of the HHO axis for the hormones involved in maturation, deviation, dominance and ovulation of the follicle may be yet another cause. The changes that occur at the cellular and molecular level in the ovary (in response to the factors mentioned above) that contribute to anovulation remain to be documented. This approach would allow us to completely understand the disease process. Hitherto, hormonal preparations that release luteinizing hormone from the anterior pituitary or have luteinizing hormone-like action are used to treat follicular cysts. GnRH belongs to the former group and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) hormone forms the latter group. Treatment with a luteolytic agent, prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha), is successful if a luteal cyst is diagnosed properly. Many agents may be developed in the future if the cellular and molecular pathways of the disease process are delineated. This article will review recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of COD and suggest direction for future studies to completely understand the disease mechanism. This review will also discuss the existing method of treatments for cysts and methods proposed for treatment of cysts that tend to be refractory in nature.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) containing an estradiol benzoate capsule on ovarian dysfunction, including ovarian quiescence, follicular cyst (FC) and luteal cyst or cystic corpus luteum (LC/CCL), in postpartum dairy cows. These ovarian dysfunctions were examined by palpation per rectum relative to plasma progesterone status. The results of clinical examination and hormone assay determined ovarian quiescence in 13 cows, FC in 15 cows and LC/CCL in 7 cows. These cows were treated with PRID for 12 d and then clinical examination was performed. After PRID removal, the proportion of cows exhibiting estrous signs within 7 d and confirmed formation of CL within 7-14 d (markedly effective) were 69.2 % (n=9) for ovarian quiescence, 46.7 % (n=7) for FC, and 28.6 % (2 cows) for LC/CCL. Two cows (15.4 %) in ovarian quiescence, 5 cows (33.3%) with FC and 4 cows (57.1 %) with LC/CCL did not exhibit estrous signs but were recognized as having formed CL within 12-16 d after removal of PRID (effective). These results suggest that treatments of PRID with estradiol benzoate for 12 d have therapeutic efficacy on ovarian dysfunction including ovarian quiescence, FC and LC/CCL in postpartum dairy cows.

Abstract
In a commercial dairy herd, 316 lactating Holsteins were studied to determine the percentage of anovular cows, to examine follicular sizes in anovular cows, and to compare synchronized ovulation (Ovsynch) versus detection of estrus on fertility of ovular and anovular cows. Ultrasonography examinations at 47 to 53 d and at 54 to 60 d postpartum were used to measure follicles and to classify cows as ovular or anovular. Anovular cows were identified as those with no detectable luteal tissue by ultrasonography and by low progesterone in blood samples collected weekly. Anovular cows included 28% of 122 primiparous cows and 15% of 194 multiparous cows. Of 64 anovular cows, 20% had follicles > or = 25 mm that might be considered cystic (4% of total cows), 58% had 15- to 24-mm follicles, and 22% had 9- to 14-mm follicles. Cows identified as ovular and anovular were randomly assigned within cyclic status to one of two artificial insemination (AI) strategies: 1) AI after detected estrus during 21 d, or 2) timed AI after a 10-d Ovsynch protocol. Weekly ultrasonography continued for 21 d to detect ovulations. For the Ovsynch sub-groups, 97% of ovular and 94% of anovular cows ovulated after the second GnRH injection. Within 21 d, spontaneous ovulations for the detection of estrus sub-groups were 42% of anovular cows vs. 89% of ovular cows. Conception rates were greater for ovular cows regardless of treatment, but conception rates between respective Ovsynch and estrus detection groups for ovular (32%, 35%) or anovular (9%, 11%) cows were similar. Although 20% of lactating cows were not cyclic by about 60 d postpartum, nearly all ovulated following Ovsynch. However, anovular cows had lower conception than ovular cows whether inseminated after detected estrous or after Ovsynch.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pretreatment with bovine somatotropin (bST) and/or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) 7 days prior to initiation of a protocol for synchronization of ovulation and timed insemination (Ovsynch) on conception rate (CR) of cows with ovarian cysts. A total of 254 lactating dairy cows with ovarian cysts was divided into four groups (Day 0). On Day 0, cows in Group 1 (n = 61) were pretreated with 500 mg bST, s.q., and 100 microg GnRH, i.m.; cows in Group 2 (n = 73) were pretreated with 100 microg GnRH, i.m.; cows in Group 3 (n = 59) were pretreated with 500 mg bST, s.q.; and cows in Group 4 (n = 61) received no pretreatment. All cows were subjected to the Ovsynch protocol 7 days later. All cows previously received routine bST treatment every 14 days until milk production decreased to a minimum level established by the management of the herd. CR was assessed using logistic regression after adjusting for timing of concurrent bST treatment relative to Day 0, parity, season at time of insemination, and days in milk (DIM) on Day 0. CR for cows in Group 3 (12%) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that for cows in Group 4 (27%), and CR for cows in Group 1 (18%) and Group 2 (15%) tended to be lower (P < 0.10) than that for cows in Group 4 (27%). From the results of this study, it was concluded that bST pretreatment decreased CR, and pretreatment with GnRH, and GnRH with bST tended to decrease CR in lactating dairy cows with ovarian cysts concurrently treated with bST and subjected to the Ovsynch protocol.

Abstract
The objective of this observational study was to evaluate the association between lameness, ovarian cysts, and fertility in lactating dairy cows. Data analysis of historical records from a 3000 Holstein farm was conducted. Sixty-five cows that became lame within 30 days postpartum were used as cases, and 130 nonlame cows served as controls. The outcome variables were incidence of ovarian cysts (OC, %), conception rate at first service (CRFS, %), overall pregnancy rate (PR, %), and calving to first service interval (CFSI, day), Incidence of OC and CRFS were analyzed by logistic regression, PR by survival analysis and CFSI by ANOVA. Lame cows had a lower CRFS (17.5% versus 42.6%) and higher incidence of OC (25.0% versus 11.1%) than controls (P<or=0.05). Calving to first service interval was not different between lame and control cows (P>0.05). There was a multicollinearity relationship between lameness and ovarian cysts. The results show that cows that became lame within the first 30 days postpartum were associated with a higher incidence of ovarian cysts, a lower likelihood of pregnancy, and lower fertility than control cows. Because this is an observational study it is not possible to conclude a cause-effect relationship.

Abstract
We investigated the therapeutic effects of a progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) on cystic ovarian disease (COD) and reproduction performance of cows. The possible influence of PRID on metabolic and/or health status was also examined. A total of 40 Holstein-Friesian cattle, with ovarian cystic structures, > or =2.5 cm in diameter, persisting for more than 7-14 days, without a corpus luteum (CL) were used for the study. PRID or placebos were inserted into the vagina for 12 days. Five animals lost the intravaginal device before removal and one was culled. Based on plasma progesterone concentration on the day of treatment, 20 (17 PRID and 3 placebos) of the remaining 34 cows had follicular cysts (progesterone < or =1 ng/ml) and 14 (10 PRID and 4 placebos) had luteal cysts (progesterone >1 ng/m l). Fourteen (82%) of the PRID-treated follicular cystic cows responded with formation of a CL within 14 days after treatment, and an overall conception rate of 53.8%. Likewise, 70% of the treated luteal cystic cows responded with CL formation and 71.4% conception rate. No significant differences were observed in hematocrit (Ht), white blood cell count and serum levels of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase, between the day of PRID insertion and removal, in animals with follicular and luteal cysts. PRID treatment resulted in ovulation 2-4 days later and formation of a CL in cows that recovered.

Abstract
Cystic ovarian disease is an important cause of reproductive failure and economic loss for the dairy industry. This report describes two consecutive studies. The objective of the first was to evaluate the response of cows with ovarian cysts to two therapeutic treatments. In the second study, we compared the effectiveness of the best treatment established in Study 1 with that of the Ovsynch protocol. For Study 1, cows were considered to have an ovarian cyst if it was possible to observe a single follicular structure with a follicular antrum diameter > 25 min in the absence of a corpus luteum in three ultrasonographic examinations performed at 7 days intervals. At diagnosis (Day 0), cows were assigned to one of two treatment groups. Cows in Group GnRH/CLP (n = 31) were treated with 100 microg GnRH i.m. and 500 microg cloprostenol (CLP) i.m. on Day 14. Cows in Group GnRH-CLP/CLP(n = 32) were treated with 100 microg GnRH i.m. plus 500 microg CLP i.m. on Day 0, and 500 microg CLP i.m. on Day 14. The animals were inseminated at observed estrus and monitored weekly by ultrasonography for 4 weeks or until Al. Cows in the GnRH-CLP/CLP group showed a lower cystic persistence rate (15.6% < 45.2%; P = 0.01); a higher estrus detection rate (84.4% > 41.9%; P < 0.0001); a higher ovulation rate (75% versus 32.3%; P < 0.0001) and a higher early response rate (31% > 3%; P = 0.02) than those in the GnRH/CLP group. For the second study, 128 cows with ovarian cysts were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: cows in Group Ovsynch (n = 64) were treated with 100 microg GnRH i.m. on Day 0, 500 microg CLP on Day 7, and 100 microm GnRH i.m. 36 h later. Cows in this group were inseminated 24 h after the second GnRH dose (Ovsynch protocol). Cows in Group GnRH-CLP/CLP/GnRH (n = 64)were treated as those in the GnRH-CLP/CLP group of Study 1 but received GnRH 32 h after the second CLP treatment and were inseminated 24 h after this. A further group of cows without ovarian cysts inseminated at natural estrus served as the Group Control (n = 64). Cows in the GnRH-CLP/CLP/ GnRH group showed a lower cystic persistence rate (10.9% < 46.9%; P < 0.0001); higher ovulation rate (79.7% > 17.2%; P < 0.0001); higher return to estrus rate (34.3% > 12.5%; P < 0.01) and higher pregnancy rate (28.1% > 3.1%; P < 0.01) than those in Ovsynch; and a similar pregnancy rate (28.1% versus 35.9%) to Control cows. These findings indicate that lactating cows with ovarian cysts can be successfully synchronized and time inseminated using a protocol that combines GnRH and CLP, starting treatment by simultaneously administering both products. This protocol also allows the insemination of cows showing estrus within the first week of treatment. Ovarian cysts were less responsive when treatment was started with GnRH alone.

Abstract
Lactating dairy cows (n = 228) in a semiseasonal, grazing-based dairy were subjected to artificial insemination (AI) to start the 23-d breeding season (d 0 to 22) followed by natural service (d 23 to 120). Cows were randomly assigned to: 1) Ovsynch (GnRH, d -10; PGF2,, d -3; GnRH, d -1; timed AI, d 0) followed by AI at estrus (tail paint removal) on d 1 to 22 (Ovsynch; n = 114); or 2) AI at estrus (tail paint removal) throughout 23 d of AI breeding (tail paint; n = 114). Days to first AI service were greater and the 23-d AI service rate was less for tail paint vs. Ovsynch cows (12.0 +/- 0.6 d vs. 0 d; and 84.2 vs. 100%, respectively). However, conception to first AI was greater for tail paint vs. Ovsynch cows (47.3 vs. 27.3%, respectively). Cows in the tail paint group received only one AI, during 23 d of AI, but 46.4% of Ovsynch cows received a second AI, with similar conception (43.1%) to that of tail paint cows at first AI (47.3%). Based on serum progesterone, incomplete luteal regression after PGF2alpha, and poor ovulatory responses to GnRH contributed to lower conception to timed AI in the Ovsynch group. Cumulative pregnancy rates for tail paint and Ovsynch cows did not differ after 23 d of AI breeding (47.3 vs. 46.3%, respectively) nor after 120 d of AI/ natural service breeding (80.5 vs. 83.3%, respectively). Lactating cows in this grazing-based dairy synchronized poorly to Ovsynch resulting in reduced conception to timed AI compared with AI after tail paint removal.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the interval from the day of administration of bovine somatotropin (bST) to the day of initiation of synchronization of ovulation (Day 0 and 7) and timed-insemination (TAI) on conception rate (CR) of dairy cows with and without ovarian cysts, respectively. Lactating dairy cows (n = 359) were divided into two groups. Cows in Group 1 (n = 238, without ovarian cysts) were treated with 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 0; 25 mg, i.m. PGF2a on Day 8. 100 mirog. i.m. GnRH on Day 10; and inseminated 16 h later without detection of estrus. Cows in Group 2 (n = 121, with ovarian cysts) were treated with 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 0; 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 7; 25 mg, i.m. PGF2alpha on Day 14, 100 ug, i.m. GnRH on Day 16; and inseminated 16 h later without detection of estrus. Between 60 and 63 days postpartum, all cows in the herd were given bST every 14 days for the duration of the study. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of nonpregnancy associated with interval from bST treatment to Day 0 for cows without ovarian cysts. and both Day 0 and 7 for cows with ovarian cysts adjusting for parity and days in milk. The CR for cows in Group 1 was significantly higher when the interval from last treatment with bST to Day 0 was between 1 and 3 days (28%) compared to 4-6 days (14%). In addition, the risk of nonpregnancy was 2.19 times greater in cows 4-6 days after bST treatment compared to 1-3 days after adjusting for parity and days in milk. The CR for cows in Group 2 was not significantly different when the interval from last treatment with bST to both Day 0 and 7 was between 1 and 3, 4 and 6, and 7 and 14 days. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested bST treatment closer to Day 0 had a positive effect on CR of cows without ovarian cysts, but bST treatment closer to both Day 0 and 7 had no effect on CR of cows with ovarian cysts. This was interpreted to mean that bST had a beneficial effect on either, or both, the preovulatory follicle and the oocyte in dairy cows without ovarian cysts, but not in dairy cows with ovarian cysts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between lameness and the duration of the interval from calving to subsequent conception in lactating dairy cows. DESIGN Cohort study. ANIMALS 837 dairy cows. PROCEDURE Cows affected with lameness were classified into 1 of 4 groups on the basis of types of disease or lesions observed, including foot rot, papillomatous digital dermatitis, claw lesions, or multiple lesions. Cows not affected with lameness were classified as healthy. Time from calving to conception was compared between lame cows and healthy cows. RESULTS 254 (30%) cows were affected with lameness during lactation. Most lame cows (59%) had claw lesions. Lame cows with claw lesions were 0.52 times as likely to conceive as healthy cows. Median time to conception was 40 days longer in lame cows with claw lesions, compared with healthy cows. Number of breedings per conception for lame cows with claw lesions was significantly higher than that for healthy cows. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Claw lesions were the most important cause of lameness, impairing reproductive performance in dairy cows, as indicated by a higher incidence of affected cows and a greater time from calving to conception and a higher number of breedings required per conception, compared with healthy cows.
