Abstract
The discovery of a new non-toxic metal complex with biological activity represents a very active area of research. Two Cu+2 complexes, [Cu4(L1)4(OH)4(DMF)2(H2O)] (C1) (HL1 = N-(5-ethyl-[1,3,4]-thiadiazole-2-yl)-benzenesulfonamide) and [Cu(L2)2(phen)(H2O)] (C2) (HL2 = N-(5-(4-methylphenyl)-[1,3,4]-thiadiazole-2-yl)-naphtalenesulfonamide), with two new ligands were synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes were determined. In both complexes, Cu+2 is five-coordinated, forming a CuN2O3 and CuN4O chromophore, respectively. The ligands act as monodentate, coordinating the metal ion through a single Nthiadiazole atom; for the two complexes, the molecules from the reaction medium (phenantroline, dimethylformamide and water) are also involved in the coordination of Cu+2. The complexes have a distorted square pyramidal square-planar geometry. The compounds were characterized by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Using the microdilution method, the antibacterial activity of the complexes was determined against four Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria, with Gentamicin as the positive control. Cytotoxicity studies were carried out on two tumor cell lines (HeLa, DLD-1) and on a normal cell line (HFL1) using the MTT method and Cisplatin as a positive control. Flow cytometric assessment of apoptosis induced by the complexes on the three cell lines was also performed. Both complexes present in vitro biological activities but complex C2 is more active.

Abstract
Heteroleptic copper complexes of an asymmetrical pincer ligand containing a central anionic sulfonamide donor (pyridine-2-yl-sulfonyl)(quinolin-8-yl)-amide (psq), which contains a central anionic sulfonamido donor have been prepared. Meridional κ3-N,N″,N‴ binding with the co-ligands acetate, chloride, or acetonitrile (MeCN), trans to the central sulfonamido N-donor, is revealed by the X-ray crystal structures of [Cu(OAc)(psq)(H2O)], [CuCl(psq)]2, and [Cu(psq)(MeCN)](PF6). Either overall distorted square pyramidal or octahedral geometries of the copper atom are satisfied by coordinated water in the case of the acetate complex or interactions with periphery sulfonamido oxygen atoms on adjacent molecules in the dimeric chloride and 1D polymeric acetonitrile complexes. The cyclic voltammogram (CV) of [Cu(OAc)(psq)(H2O)] shows a quasi-reversible CuII/CuI reduction at -0.930 V (vs Fc+/Fc0, MeCN), and an irreversible CuII/CuI reduction for [Cu(psq)(MeCN)](PF6) is seen at -0.838 V. This signal is split into two quasi-reversible redox processes on the addition of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE). This suggests that TFE pushes a solution equilibrium toward a dimeric acetate complex analogous to [CuCl(psq)]2, which shows two quasi-reversible waves at -0.666 V and -0.904 V vs Fc+/Fc0 consistent with its dimeric solid-state structure. A comparison of the CVs of [Cu(OAc)(psq)(H2O)] under either a N2 or an O2 atmosphere revealed that this complex catalyzes turnover electro-reduction of O2 to H2O2 and H2O. The rate of reaction increases on addition of a weak organic acid, and a coulombic efficiency of 48% for H2O2 was determined by iodometric titration. We propose that a CuI complex formed on electroreduction binds O2 to yield an intermediate superoxide complex. On electron and proton transfer to this species, a bifurcated route back to the O2-activating CuI complex is feasible with either release of H2O2 or O-O cleavage resulting in the liberation of H2O. The CuI complex is regenerated by subsequent reduction and protonation to close the cycle.

Abstract
Reported herein the binding affinity between Human Serum Albumin and the DNA binding and cleavage activity of three copper(II) complexes, [Cu(phen)(o-van)ClO4] (1), [Cu(phen)(gly)]ClO4 (2) and [Cu(L1)2(H2O)2] (3) wherein 1 and 2 are synthesized with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and co-ligands (o-van: o-vanillin; gly: glycine) and 3 with a ligand 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine (H1L1). Complex 2 crystallizes in monoclinic (P21/n) space group shows square pyramidal geometry. The complex 3 crystallizes in monoclinic (P21/a) space group. All the three complexes exhibit binding affinity towards the transport protein Human Serum albumin (HSA). Quantitative evaluation of the thermodynamics of interaction and the results obtained from fluorescence spectroscopy suggest that metal coordinated glycynate, o-vanillin and perchlorate groups have a major role to play in the binding process, the latter two being stronger in the binding of complex 1. The coordinated water in complex 3 also plays an important role in the binding, which makes binding of complex 3 with HSA stronger than that of complex 2. Experimental results indicate that the binding affinity of the complexes towards CT-DNA is in the order 1>3>2 implying that complex 1 binds stronger than complex 3 and 2.The DNA cleaving activity of all the three complexes was explored in the presence of reactive oxygen compound, H2O2. All the three complexes have primarily shown the DNA cleaving activity.

Abstract
The crystal structure of a new coordination compound tri(2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline) Co(II) complex ([Co(dcpip)3]Cl2) was measured with X-ray diffraction measurements. The compound is crystallizes triclinic, Pī space group. The ligand, 2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline(dcpip), binds to Co(II) ions with a bis-dentate mode, and each Co(II) ion with a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The calculated interaction energies of Co(II) with coordination atoms N are between 101.7-206.5 kJ/mol and 115.3-230.9 kJ/mol for B3LYP/6-31+G(∗) and PBE1PBE/6-31+G(∗) theoretical methods, respectively. The experimental Fourier transform infrared spectrum was assigned. The calculated IR based on B3LYP/6-31+G(∗) and PBE1PBE/6-31+G(∗) methods were performed and compared with experimental results. The UV-Vis experimental spectrum of [Co(dcpip)3]Cl2 was measured in methanol solution. The calculated electronic spectrum was performed with TD/B3LYP and TD/PBE1PBE methods with 6-31+G(∗) basis set. The first and second order hyperpolarizability for the compound was calculated. The calculated values of γtot are -1.5551344 × 10(-33) esu for B3LYP method and -1.3323259 × 10(-33) esu for PBE1PBE method. The nature bond orbital analysis and temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties were calculated with the same methods.

Abstract
New copper(II) complexes with sulfonamide ligands have been prepared and characterized. Sulfonamide ligands were prepared through a reaction between 8-aminoquinoline and either 2-mesitylene (Hqmesa), 4-tert-butylbenzene (Hqtbsa), or alpha-toluene (Halphaqtsa) sulfonyl chlorides. The structural analysis carried out for complex [Cu(alphaqtsa)(2)] indicated that the local environment of the Cu(II) cation is between a square planar and a tetrahedral geometry, with stacking of the benzene rings of the sulfonyl ligands between neighbor molecules. Powder EPR spectra at room temperature gave rhombic spectra for the [Cu(alphaqtsa)(2)] and [Cu(qmesa)(2)] complexes and an axial spectrum for the [Cu(qtbsa)(2)] complex, probably due to the steric hindrance of the methyl groups. Complexes [Cu(alphaqtsa)(2)] and [Cu(qmesa)(2)] are artificial chemical nucleases that degrade DNA in the presence of sodium ascorbate. A study of the radical scavengers revealed that the ROS (reactive oxygen species) involved in the DNA damage were hydroxyl, singlet oxygen-like species, and superoxide anion.

Abstract
DNA-binding properties of novel copper(II) complex [Cu(l-Phe)(TATP)(H(2)O)](+), where L-Phe=L-phenylalaninate and TATP=1,4,8,9-tetra-aza-triphenylene are investigated using electronic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, voltammetry and viscosity measurement. It is found that the presence of calf thymus DNA results in a hypochromism and red shift in the electronic absorption, a quenching effect on fluorescence nature of ethidium bromide-DNA system, an enhanced response on voltammograms of [Co(phen)(3)](3+/2+)-DNA system, and an obvious change in viscosity of DNA. From absorption titration, fluorescence analysis and voltammetric measurement, the binding constant of the complex with DNA is calculated. The latter two methods reveal the stronger binding of [Cu(l-Phe)(TATP)(H(2)O)](+) complex to double strand DNA by the moderate intercalation than [Co(phen)(3)](3+). Such a binding induces the cleavage of plasmid pBR322 DNA in the presence of H(2)O(2).

Abstract
Reaction between benzoguanamine (2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine) and 2-mesitylenesulfonyl chloride leads to formation of a sulfonamide able to form two mononuclear Cu(II) complexes with a CuL(2) stoichiometry. The local environment of the metal cation is a distorted octahedron, with two ligands and two solvent molecules; both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic structure, space group P2(1), with Z=2. In the presence of ascorbate/H(2)O(2,) the two complexes significantly cleavage double-strand pUC18 DNA plasmid. Both complexes exhibit more nuclease efficiency that the copper phenantroline complex. From scavenging reactive oxygen studies we conclude that the hydroxyl radical and a singlet oxygen-like entity, such a peroxide copper complex, are the radical species involved in the DNA damage.
