Redox Speciation of Vanadium in Estuarine Waters Using Improved Methodology Based on Anion Exchange Chromatography Coupled to HR ICP-MS System. Molecules 2021; 26:molecules26092436. Abstract
An improved methodology was developed for V redox speciation in estuarine waters using a hyphenated technique consisting of ion chromatograph (IC) with an anion exchange column and a high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR ICP-MS). This approach enables the direct determination of V(V), whereas reduced species (mainly V(IV)) are calculated by subtracting V(V) concentrations from the measured total V concentration. Based on the “on-column” V(V) chelation mechanism by EDTA, with the eluent composed of 40 mmol L−1 ammonium bicarbonate, 40 mmol L−1 ammonium sulphate, 8 mmol L−1 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and 3% acetonitrile, the method was successfully used for analyses of V redox speciation in samples taken in the vertical salinity gradient of the highly stratified Krka River estuary. Due to the matrix effects causing different sensitivities, a standard addition method was used for V(V) quantification purposes. The limit of detection (LOD) was also found to be matrix related: 101.68 ng L−1 in the seawater and 30.56 µg L−1 in the freshwater. Performed stability tests showed that V redox speciation is preserved at least 7 days in un-treated samples, possibly due to the stabilization of V-reduced species with natural organic matter (NOM). The dominant V form in the analysed samples was V(V) with the reduced V(IV) accounting for up to 26% of the total dissolved pool. The concentration of V(IV) was found to correlate negatively with the oxygen concentration. Significant removal of dissolved V was detected in oxygen depleted zones possibly related to the particle scavenging.

Abstract
A mixture of rhodium(iii) hydroxocomplexes formed during the polycondensation process in alkaline media has been fully characterized by the hyphenated high performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS). The baseline separation was achieved using reverse phase ion-pair chromatography (RP-IP-HPLC) in gradient elution mode. When using SDS as the ion pair, the formation of all types of its associates with the molecules of acetonitrile, as well as oligomers of rhodium aquahydroxocomplexes, etc. was taken into consideration. As a result, it was shown that the test mixture is presented by [Rh(H2O)6]3+, [Rh2(μ-OH)2(H2O)8]4+, [Rh3(μ-OH)4(H2O)10]5+, [Rh4(μ-OH)6(H2O)12]6+.

Abstract
The paper presents the new HPLC-ICP-MS method used for conducting speciation analysis of aluminum as free Al(3+) and aluminum fluoride complexes during one analysis. In the study, 5% HNO3 was used as a derivative reagent in order to minimize the possibility of clogging the torch in ICP-MS. Using the new HPLC-ICP-MS method, speciation analysis of aluminum and aluminum fluoride complexes was conducted on the basis of model solutions and real samples (soil-water extracts and groundwater samples). The analysis in the presented analytical system lasts only 4 min.

Abstract
An argon-stabilized U-shaped DC arc with a system for aerosol introduction was used for determination of As in poplar (Populus alba L.) tree-rings. After optimization of the operating parameters and selection of the most appropriate signal integration time (30 s), the limit of detection for As was reduced to 15.0 ng/mL. This detection limit obtained with the optimal integration time was compared with those for other methods: inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), direct coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (DCP-AES), microwave induced plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (MIP-AES) and improved thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (TS-FF-AAS). Arsenic is toxic trace element which can adversely affect plant, animal and human health. As an indicator of environment pollution we collected poplar tree-rings from two locations. The first area was close to the "Nikola Tesla" (TENT-A) power plant, Obrenovac, while the other was in the urban area of Novi Sad. In all cases elevated average concentrations of As were registered in poplar tree-rings from the Obrenovac location.

Abstract
A method based on the coupling microHPLC-microneb-ICPMS has been developed for Hg(II), MeHg+, EtHg+ and PhHg+ species. Gradient elution using methanol and l-cysteine at pH 3.0 allowed the chromatographic separation of all species in less than 13 min (total analysis time 15 min). The direct coupling of microLC to ICPMS through a Micromist nebulizer permits the analysis of environmental water without sample pretreatment and derivatization steps. Nebulizer type, organic modifier and column length were the main parameters tested. The methanol content and pH of the mobile phase greatly affected the retention time and sensitivity of the method. Key factors to obtain high signal to noise ratio, at concentrations below 1 microg L(-1), were found to be the nebulization step and traces of Hg present in the complexing agent. A detailed optimization of carrier and make up gas flow rates have enabled the nebulization of the methanol gradient elution with good mass transport efficiency, low organic solvent loading into the plasma and excellent precision. The performance of the microHPLC-microneb-ICPMS method developed was evaluated on a surface water sample filtered (0.22 microm) and spiked with 0.5 microg L(-1) (as Hg) of each species. Precision (R.S.D., n=6) for all species of Hg varied from 0.5 to 2.1%. Detection limit, defined as three times the standard deviation (n=6), ranged from 8 ng L(-1) for EtHg+ to 32 ng L(-1) for PhHg+ and was noticeably lower than those reported in previous LC-based methods. Accuracy was suitable with recoveries ranging from 85 to 100% when tested at two levels (0.5 and 10 microg L(-1)) in groundwater samples. Recovery was matrix affected when water samples of high salinity (depurated wastewater and seawater) were used.

Abstract
A review is presented detailing the development of ion chromatography (IC) as a selective analytical tool for the determination of toxic metals and their organic species in many environmental sample matrices. A brief outline of ion chromatographic principles, together with an overview of the stationary phases used to separate metals, namely ion exchangers, modified ion pair sorbents and chelating ion exchangers, and the methods for detecting metal ions including hyphenation with spectroscopy and sample preparation schemes are also given, prior to a critical examination of developed methods for various metals including arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, mercury, beryllium, aluminium and uranium since 1990.

Abstract
Column-switching liquid chromatography followed by low-resolution ICPMS was evaluated as a tool for speciation analysis of metal-containing biomolecules. The strategy was applied on siderophores, strong iron chelators of low molecular weight (M(w) < 1500). Prior to the LC-ICPMS analysis, reductive displacement of iron by gallium was performed using ascorbate as the reducing agent to increase the sensitivity. Different experimental conditions during the exchange reaction were tested using ferrichrysin and ferrichrome for evaluation. A reaction time of 30 min and a pH of 3.9 gave an exchange yield of 27 and 83% for ferrichrysin and ferrichrome, respectively. A gradient elution profile was also developed to separate gallium-chelated siderophores on a PGC column. Detection limits for standard solutions of ferrichrysin and ferrichrome in the low-nanomolar range were obtained by monitoring the gallium-69 isotope. The combined use of LC-ICPMS and LC-ESI-MS/MS was also evaluated as a tool to identify unknown metal complexes, here siderophores, in field soil solution samples.

Abstract
The necessity of using coupled techniques to analyze samples from boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) patients prior to element-specific detection has been demonstrated. BNCT patients were infused with p-boronophenylalanine (BPA)-fructose complex before the therapy started. Urine and blood plasma samples were collected at different times after the start of the BPA administration and were run on a porous graphitic carbon column coupled on-line to an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) and an ICP time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). In addition to BPA, a possible metabolite to BPA and some minor boron-containing compounds, eluting close to the front, were also found in the urine and plasma samples. Because only the total concentration of boron has been measured so far in earlier studies, the suspected metabolite could not be detected, and this is the first report indicating its presence in urine and plasma of BNCT patients. The abundance of 10B in urine was about the same for BPA and its possible metabolite (98-99%). The ratio between the possible metabolite and BPA was found to differ in the urine from different patients. Most of the patients had a metabolite concentration of approximately 10 mol % of the BPA content in their urine 5-11 h after the start of the BPA administration. This ratio increased to between 30 and 80% when 24 h had passed. The ratio of metabolite to BPA was found to be lower in the plasma than in the urine samples at comparable time after the start of BPA infusion. Preliminary results from micro-LC-electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS/MS measurements on four urine samples indicate that the metabolite has a higher mass than BPA.

Abstract
A review is presented on recent applications of mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques for the analysis of compounds of food concern. Substances discussed are naturally occurring compounds in food products such as lipids, oligosaccharides, proteins, vitamins, flavonoids and related substances, phenolic compounds and aroma compounds. Among xenobiotics, applications of MS techniques for the analysis of pesticides, drug residues, toxins, amines and migrants from packaging are overviewed. Advances in the analysis of trace metals of nutritional and toxicological interest by MS with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source are presented. The main features of mass spectrometry combined with separation instruments are discussed in food-related analysis. Examples of mass spectrometry and tandem MS (MS-MS) are provided. The development and application of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and electrospray (ESI) to the analysis of peptides and proteins in food is discussed. This survey will attempt to cover the state-of-the-art up from 1999 to 2001.

Abstract
Most important properties of an ion chromatographic resin are influenced by the resin matrix, the type of functional group and the ion-exchange capacity. Highly crosslinked PS-DVB resins of 5 microm diameter have been functionalized by sulfoacylation, by sulfonation and by dynamic coating over a wide range of exchange capacities. These materials allow a study of the influence of different ion-exchange sites and capacities. The influence of the degree of functionalization on resin performance is completely reverse for sulfoacylated and sulfonated resins. The HETP values for all observed analytes (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cd, Mn, Ca, Mg) in a tartaric acid elution system decrease for sulfoacylated resins with increasing capacity, for sulfonated resins with decreasing capacity. The performance of sulfoacylated exchangers is better than for dynamically coated ones and far better than for sulfonated resins. The performance of silica gel based cation-exchangers such as BioSil CAT is in most cases better than observed for sulfoacylated resins.
