Abstract
Dairy fat has a unique lipid profile; it is rich in short- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids that induce ketone production and has a balanced ω6/ω3 ratio that promotes cognitive development in early life. Moreover, the high consumption of vegetable oils in pregnant and lactating women raises concerns regarding the quality of lipids provided to offspring. Here, we investigate maternal dairy fat intake during gestation and lactation in a highly valuable primate model for infant nutritional studies, the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus). Two experimental diets are provided to gestant mouse lemurs: a dairy fat-based (DF) or vegetable fat-based diet (VF). The psychomotor performance of neonates is tested during their first 30 days. Across all tasks, we observe more successful neonates born to mothers fed a DF diet. A greater rate of falls is observed in 8-day-old VF neonates, which is associated with delayed psychomotor development. Our findings suggest the potential benefits of lipids originating from a lactovegetarian diet compared with those originating from a vegan diet for the psychomotor development of neonates.

Abstract
In litter-bearing mammals, conditions experienced early in life can have long-lasting consequences on adult behavioral and physiological phenotypes, including reproductive fitness and survival. Using data from a large database, we focused our analysis on the consequences of litter composition on the reproductive performance of 131 mouse lemur males during their first breeding season. For male offspring, body mass at birth and at weaning only depended on the litter size (from one to 3), with the lowest values in triplets. Early growth had no relationship with the future reproductive success when males entered their first breeding season. When mouse lemurs were kept in groups with 2 or 3 competitors, males entered sexual competition for priority access to females in estrus, leading to a hierarchy with the dominant male ensuring the successful mating of the females. Genetic paternity tests showed that males born in same-sex litters (M, MM, MMM) were more competitive and fathered more offspring than males born in mixed-sex litters (MF, MMF, MFF), indicating the negative impact of a sister on male reproductive success. However, testosterone levels were unrelated to early growth or litter sex composition but were dependent on social interactions during sexual competition, with higher values in successful males. The effects of litter composition on the mating success of male mouse lemurs might mainly occur through social interactions between male offspring born in same-sex litters. Play fighting between juvenile males could play a major role in their acquisition of the skills required to succeed in sexual competition.

Abstract
Sensory gene families are of special interest for both what they can tell us about molecular evolution and what they imply as mediators of social communication. The vomeronasal type-1 receptors (V1Rs) have often been hypothesized as playing a fundamental role in driving or maintaining species boundaries given their likely function as mediators of intraspecific mate choice, particularly in nocturnal mammals. Here, we employ a comparative genomic approach for revealing patterns of V1R evolution within primates, with a special focus on the small-bodied nocturnal mouse and dwarf lemurs of Madagascar (genera Microcebus and Cheirogaleus, respectively). By doubling the existing genomic resources for strepsirrhine primates (i.e. the lemurs and lorises), we find that the highly speciose and morphologically cryptic mouse lemurs have experienced an elaborate proliferation of V1Rs that we argue is functionally related to their capacity for rapid lineage diversification. Contrary to a previous study that found equivalent degrees of V1R diversity in diurnal and nocturnal lemurs, our study finds a strong correlation between nocturnality and V1R elaboration, with nocturnal lemurs showing elaborate V1R repertoires and diurnal lemurs showing less diverse repertoires. Recognized subfamilies among V1Rs show unique signatures of diversifying positive selection, as might be expected if they have each evolved to respond to specific stimuli. Furthermore, a detailed syntenic comparison of mouse lemurs with mouse (genus Mus) and other mammalian outgroups shows that orthologous mammalian subfamilies, predicted to be of ancient origin, tend to cluster in a densely populated region across syntenic chromosomes that we refer to as a V1R "hotspot."

Abstract
The massive energetic costs entailed by reproduction in most mammalian females may increase the vulnerability of reproductive success to food shortage. Unexpected events of unfavorable climatic conditions are expected to rise in frequency and intensity as climate changes. The extent to which physiological flexibility allows organisms to maintain reproductive output constant despite energetic bottlenecks has been poorly investigated. In mammals, reproductive resilience is predicted to be maximal during early stages of reproduction, due to the moderate energetic costs of ovulation and gestation relative to lactation. We experimentally tested the consequences of chronic-moderate and short-acute food shortages on the reproductive output of a small seasonally breeding primate, the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) under thermo-neutral conditions. These two food treatments were respectively designed to simulate the energetic constraints imposed by a lean year (40% caloric restriction over eight months) or by a sudden, severe climatic event occurring shortly before reproduction (80% caloric restriction over a month). Grey mouse lemurs evolved under the harsh, unpredictable climate of the dry forest of Madagascar and should thus display great potential for physiological adjustments to energetic bottlenecks. We assessed the resilience of the early stages of reproduction (mating success, fertility, and gestation) to these contrasted food treatments, and on the later stages (lactation and offspring growth) in response to the chronic food shortage only. Food deprived mouse lemurs managed to maintain constant most reproductive parameters, including oestrus timing, estrogenization level at oestrus, mating success, litter size, and litter mass as well as their overall number of surviving offspring at weaning. However, offspring growth was delayed in food restricted mothers. These results suggest that heterothermic, fattening-prone mammals display important reproductive resilience to energetic bottlenecks. More generally, species living in variable and unpredictable habitats may have evolved a flexible reproductive physiology that helps buffer environmental fluctuations.

Abstract
In strepsirrhine primates, the accessory olfactory system plays an important role in intrasexual competition. However, it does not play the same role in most haplorhines. In these primates, the main olfactory system and neocortex may have evolved to serve similar functions as the accessory olfactory system in strepsirrhines. To test these hypotheses, the relative size of the main olfactory bulb and neocortex were analyzed for associations with male and female competition frequency and intensity (categorized as low or high). Because neocortex size and competition intensity are associated with diet, only frugivorous species were analyzed (catarrhines, n = 7; platyrrhines, n = 8). Neither the size of the main olfactory bulb nor the neocortex was significantly associated with intrasexual competition among males. However, neocortex size was related to the frequency of female competition. Because the main olfactory system and neocortex both serve multiple purposes, there may not be a single behavioral variable that has selected for their size. Furthermore, categorization of male and female competition intensity reflects physically aggressive behavior. Use of the neocortex for social manipulation may allow males to obtain copulations and females to obtain food resources despite poor physical fighting abilities and low dominance rank.
